E xam proj e c t Hans Bro ge s G ad e The translucent facade came from the ideas of the specific zones in the proposal. The private, the public, the semipublic and the buffer-zones. The importance of constructing a private area lies in the ability to remove the inhabitant from distractions, this has been done by placing the private areas towards the courtyard, thus alienating themselves from the street.
The idea of translucency as opposed to transparency as opposite concept have been delved into. Translucency illuminates the room in a white indirect light, thus letting in the light, but not the distractions of the busy street, constructng a membrane or a curtain that deals with the inhabitants as silhouttes, hereby rendering all the inhabitants as gender- and ageless.
Whereas the private area is placed towards the yard, the semipublic areas are placed in the part of the building facing the street. The term semi-public comes from the degree of social interaction found in the proposal. Semi-public areas are defined by being areas where the inhabitants would meet during daily tasks such as cooking, bathing and moving in, out and towards specific areas. This inbetween movement was important in the construction of the facade, as this translucent facade would reveal to the outer public a dynamic flow and internal movement inside the complex.
Taking inspiration from Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre, the translucent facade will show the internal movement in the dark hours of the night, and creating a plane during the day, where only light will be let in making the movement inside will be less visible

CONTEXT

The project takes it’s beginning on Hansbrogesgade 31, 8000 Aarhus C. The first thing the presentation will introduce is the site and the assignment at hand by showing where the current building is placed. The further the presentation goes along, the closer the details of the proposal will be delved into.
Exploded axonemetric view of the movement elements in the proposal of Hansbrogesgade 31.

The ”Production-stairs” are created in order to ensue a fast passageway from the bottom level to the rooftop terasse. It follows one of Le Corbusier’s main aspects of architecture as it allows the inhabitant, of the building of which the principle is used, to ascend to the light and find the Sun on the rooftop terasse.

A way to create two functions in this room is to introducing two levels, the arrival and the kitchen level. The small descending/ascending staircase between the levels announce the inbetween-movement, thus filling a void otherwise uninhabitated. This ”Descending-staircase” is our way of commiting to the ground of which it is placed. It goes directly in contact with the outside yard area, as it allows itself to lower itself just below the street level.

Gr adi ent
The way one moves from one level to another on the same storey of a building tells a lot of how the zones are connected. In the couple’s apartments the living quarters have been placed on two different levels. This constructs both a living- and a sleeping-level. The movement between these two levels became important to inhance, as one moves between the two levels on two very specific times in the day - day and night. The ”Gradient-staircase” was hereby constructed in order to soften the division between these two living spaces.

D iv id ing
In creating the communal bathing area, it was important to acknowledge a division between what is private and what could be considered a possibility of being semi-public. Inspired by 1940’s, WWII bath houses, the communal bath is a part of the social area. It creates a new meeting place, otherwise seen as being extremly private. By creating a new level below the meeting area, the single step constructs a membrane between the very private and the semi-public, as you are nude in one and clothed in the other.

The elevation element is not only permitted by the fire ensurence/security code, but also gives a direct and safe passage from the bottom level to the top level, hereby ensuring a connection across the entirety of the structure, as every storey is accessible by the elevator.
Post the research, the concepts have been dealt with, analysed and ultimately been applied to the proposal. Showing the elements in question

The rendering shows the pivotal evolution in the bathing facilities. Going from one extreme of placing it in the basement, it now sits in between the living quarters.
