Interview: King of the Devil´s Island The Nisimazine boat at this year´s edition of the Kaunas International Film Festival is on full speed. Navigating through this eclectic and diverse program, our sailors have been working hard to find the most original and groundbreaking films on display in this little corner of the world. And we think we´ve found them, as few works fit this category as perfectly as Denis Cótê eye opening journey through the animal world in Bestiary; French low budget experiment through modern day human relationships in Donoma; and to top it all up, we also caught up with Marius Holst, director of King of the Devil´s Island.
Bestiary

“Ask the beast and it will teach thee, and the birds of heaven and they will tell thee” (Job 12:7). Bestiaries used to contain entries on various animals, accompanied with moral or religious lessons inspired by the author’s understanding of the creature’s habits. Bestiaire by Denis Côté is a modern bestiary, but like its predecessors, animals shown in it have symbolical meaning for the viewer to decrypt and gain more understanding of the world. READ MORE

King of Devil’s Island (2010) goes back to a true story from 1915. Nevertheless, it explores themes that are still relevant today. The young Erling (Benjamin Helstad) is send to Bastøy, an island on which young criminals are detained. As the injustices grow, the boys get more and more upset with their position. I had the opportunity to met with the director of King of Devil’s Island to speak about his most recent work. READ MORE
Review Donoma

Djinn Carrénard‘s debut feature, Donoma, tells us three stories of young women, challenging concepts of love, social roles, identity and faith. With an eclectic plot, this dynamic film takes place in Paris; a Spanish teacher falls into ambiguous relationship with her student, a photographer starts an experimental mute romance with a stranger and an agnostic girl seeks for signs and relieving answers to her troubles.
