Bosnalı yönetmen Aida Begić’in festivaldeki yarışma filmlerinden, ilk uzun metrajlı filmi Kar’ı bitirmesi dört yılını aldı. Aida Begić filminin yapım sürecini anlatıyor… It took almost four years for Bosnian Director Aida Begic to complete her first feature, Snow, in competition at the festival. She explains about the making of the film. Hikayenize kaynaklık eden fikre nasıl ulaştınız? Bosna’daki savaş sırasında pek çok kadın kocalarını ve babalarını kaybetti. Srebrenica’da sadece bir gün içerisinde onbin erkek öldürüldü. Hayatta kalan kadınlar bir anda kendi başlarının çaresine bakmak zorunda bırakıldılar. Onların yaşadığı bu trajedi önemli çünkü bu kadınlar halen daha yeteri kadar destek ve anlayışla karşılanmış değiller.
Film kendini gerçekliğe o kadar kaptırmış ki, ulaştığı başarı sonrasında, Spinal Tap gerçekten meşhur olmuş ve canlı performanslar yapmaya başlamış. Film, günümüz rock gruplarının sahne arkası hallerinin komik ve sinik bir portresi ve ‘sahte belgesel’lerin ciddiyet taşımadan ciddiye alınması konusunda bir mihenk taşı. 1984’te bu o kadar ilgi çekicidir ki insanların kişisel hayatlarını izleyiciye gösteren bu işgalci film yapımı açıkça eleştirilmiş, bu da günümüz ‘reality show’larına ve sansasyonel televizyon programlarına benzetilir.
This is the film that first gave birth to the term ‘mockumentary’. The first master stroke of cult director Rob Reiner (Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally…) is a sarcastic comedy about the backstage life of a fictional rock band called ‘Spinal Tap’. It was so well built as a true documentary that they had to find a new name in order to fit it into a genre. The situations and dialogues – stupid as they can get – seem authentic and spontaneous, and give you the impression of real improvisation throughout. The camera is there as a witness of the band’s day-today life, including shower talks, embarrassing conversations and self-indulgent interviews. The musicians maintain a perfect and fluid interaction between one another and never give in to the temptation of breaking into a farce. Even real anecdotes of rock legends were used to make it all more convincing. The film committed itself so well to realism that, after its success, the band actually got famous and started to perform live as Spinal Tap. It is altogether a very funny and cynical portrait of the behind the scenes of rock bands at the time and marks a turning point for understanding mockumentaries as a serious - being unserious – matter. And isn’t it curious that back in 1984, some people already had the clarity to criticize this style of invasive filming of personal lives to show to an audience, as we so often see nowadays with reality shows and sensationalist television?

How did you get the idea for the story? A lot of women lost their husbands and fathers during the war in Bosnia. There were 10 000 men killed during a single day in Srebrenica. The women who survived were suddenly left to take care of themselves. Their tragedy is important because they still haven’t met with the adequate support or understanding. Although male characters are mostly absent, the women manage quite well without them. Patriarchal society vanished with the male characters, but its spirit remained. The film itself deals with many issues, but I don’t think it propagates or criticises anything. Alma, the main character, promotes tradition but not in a regressive way. Her attitude asserts community as a value which shouldn’t be neglected and tends to break the illusion that somewhere else is always better. Alma has the courage and strength to believe in the potential of her country. What does the snow in the title represent? Snow is something that at the same time reveals and conceals. With its white beauty it conceals the dirt of the world, while at the same time it reveals the tracks of the beasts that walk through the woods. Mario Kozina

Bu film ‘sahte belgesel’ kavramını ilk kez ortaya koyan film... Kült yönetmen Rob Reiner’in (Stand by Me, When Harry Met Sally) ilk büyük vuruşu, kurgusal bir rock grubu olan ‘Spinal Tap’ hakkındaki iğneleyici bir komedi. Sahici bir belgesel gibi kusursuz tasarlanan filmde grup, yaptıkları müzik türüne uygun ismi bulmak zorunluluğunda. Durumlar ve diyaloglar – olabilecekleri kadar aptalca hakiki ve kendiliğinden görünmekle birlikte film boyu gerçek bir doğaçlama izlenimini veriyor. Kamera, duştaki konuşmalardan, utanç verici diyaloglara ve pervazsızca yapılan kişisel röportajlara kadar grubun gün gün hayatına tanıklık ediyor. Müzisyenler, ‘fars’a sapmadan birbirleriyle kusursuz ve akıcı bir ilişki kuruyorlar. Bunu daha inandırıcı kılmak için gerçek rock efsanelerinden anektotlar kullanılıyor.
Her ne kadar filmin erkek karakterleri çoğunlukla orada olmasalar da, Kar’ın kadın karakterleri hayatlarını onlarsız gayet iyi idare edebiliyorlar. Ataerkil toplum erkek karakterlerle birlikte ortadan kayboldu fakat onun ruhu geride kaldı. Bu film pek çok konu ile hesaplaşıyor ama birşeylerin propagandasını yapıyor ya da eleştiriyor zannetmeyin. Baş karakter Alma, geleneği gerici olmayan bir yolla destekler. Onun bu tavrı cemaatin kolay kolay göz ardı edilemeyecek, başka yerlerin her zaman daha iyi olacağına ilişkin oluşmuş yanılsamayı kırmaya yönelen bir değer olduğunu öne sürmektir. Alma’da ülkesinin sahip olduğu potansiyele inanma cesareti ve gücü var.
