The Pride Center is celebrating in the month of November the creative works of local artists, who are veterans. This celebration is to honor their service to the United States as well as to appreciate the artistic talents of Local GLBT veterans. This year is the one year anniversary of the repeal of the military’s discriminatory policy of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT). The title of the exhibition is “Stand at, EASE” which is a universal military term across all of the service branches. The repeal of DADT allows gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals to serve openly regardless of sexual orientation. “Stand at, EASE” is an invitation to never forget the time when gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals in the military were unable to serve openly. And, to remember just to relax.

Presents: The Closing Reception The Polka Dot Poetry Peacock Artist’s Statement: The Polka Dot Poetry Peacock is the first collaged art for public places work of its kind, combining an anthology of contemporary poetry in a collage with painting. I dreamed of implementing this idea for many years and when I heard of the peacock competition for art for the public , I knew it was the perfect palette. As a poet, I work concurrently on several poems and art as ideas come to me. My ideas come from all sources and I jot them down in a notebook to be harmonized at a later date. I now combine poetry and painting in a series of art pieces. My mission statement as a writer and artist is “to enhance the enjoyment of poetry through art and the written word, reaching as many people as possible on significant issues both serious and frivolous." I feel my art is furthering that effort. I imagined people enjoying the reading of the poems affixed to the peacock and telling others, perhaps going to the library and checking out books by the poets, finding it on their ipad, or phone or buying a book of poetry. This art taps in to poetry, making it touchable. Viewing the work is essential to achieving my goal, my purpose, that is, provoking people’s involvement in poetry.
