1.1 ABOUT THE PROJECT

MNEMODRONE is a transmedia memory-collecting project based on drone technology that investigates the social and philosophical issues of coexistence between human and artificial intelligences.

1.2 CONTEXT

In 2011 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that in less than 20 years, there will be 30,000 drones flying over the American soil, watching the entire country. Now we’re at the beginning of that process, and the FAA still has little knowledge of what kinds of drones are going to take over the sky. What is even more difficult to foresee, are the kinds of relationships that will develop between humans and drones.

1.3 ABOUT CHAPTER TWO

REFEST Festival, November 2123rd 2014, 47 Great Jones Street, New York, NY For MNEMODRONE - CHAPTER TWO we continued to gather memories as we did in CHAPTER ONE, but this time the setting was different. We were inside a gallery and not in a public space. We also exhibited a photographic and multimedia installation which presented documentation of CHAPTER ONE. Additionally, people had the possibility to share their memories by calling from (A) their own phones or (B) using a new iPhone docking station which allowed them to call without using their personal devices.

1.4 ABOUT CULTURE HUB REFEST

MNEMODRONE was exhibited as part of the thematic exhibition Interplay. The works exhibited in Interplay were selected from an open call seeking art exploring the themes of participation and play.

Viewers were compelled to engage with the artworks, whether telling their secrets to a drone, resisting a dystopian surveillance, or exploring housing projects in Singapore. Interplay exploits game mechanics and interactive media to direct attention to social and political ideas and produce a dialogical narrative.

1.5 SOME ANSWERS

We concluded CHAPTER ONE with two series of questions, the first of which was regarding the long-term goals of the project, which we still can't answer and will accompany the development of all future chapters.

The second was about our methodology, which we tried to answer through a different methodology. We found answers to all five questions we had posed.

1. How different would the messages be if we don't explain the project personally? 2. If we are not inviting the public, will people engage with the project?

During CHAPTER TWO we presented MNEMODRONE in the context of an art installation so that the project could be self-explanatory. The public had the possibility to read a written publication about the project, watch a video of CHAPTER ONE's public presentations, and see a heterogeneous collection of materials. Despite all of this, during the opening night we still directly explained the project to some members of the public, and we 6

therefore can't be sure if those people left a message and if our actions influenced the content of the messages. We decided to do so in part because we were asked to by the public, and in part because it would have been a missed opportunity not to engage directly with the public.

However, during the following two days we didn't explain the project to anybody - looking for a different result - and we noticed a larger percentage of messages with no sound. More precisely, the second day we received three empty messages out of a total of four. The first day, in contrast, when we explained the project in person, we received four empty messages, but this was out of a total of twenty-four recorded messages. This significant difference could be interpreted as the result of an inferior degree of interaction between the public and our project. All of this led us to believe that people are more willing to share memories and take part in the project after they are encouraged to do so by us. In conclusion, the main difference between explaining or not explaining the project wasn't found in the content of the messages, but in the number of messages gathered.

3. Will not presenting the project personally affect the ratio of men and women? And the content of the messages?

Three messages out of a total of three messages with clear sound gathered during the two days in which we didn't personally present the project were left by women. This preliminary finding means that our presentation "in person" didn't impact the ratio at all. In fact for CHAPTER TWO the ratio was very close to 50/50, and more females left messages when we didn't present the project personally. Although we can't compare this with the ratio of men and women present each day, there is no data suggesting any direct relationship between our presence and the gender of the members of the public who engage with MNEMODRONE. Instead, we found a significant difference in the content of the messages gathered when we didn't present the project personally: in those cases (three) the memories were particularly intimate. So, if we can draw a conclusion from this limited set of data, we would deduct that when we don't encourage people to share memories, they do so much 8

less, but if they do it out of their own will, they share more private memories (compared to funnier, more light-hearted memories shared after talking with the artists).

4. Can we separate the performative side of the project from the act of gathering memories?

How will that influence the content of the memories? 5. What happens if we don't perform in a public space but we present the project indoors?

While we separated the performative side, we didn't collect enough data to establish whether this decision impacted the collected messages. We did register a major change in the content of the messages: during CHAPTER TWO none of the collected messages were sexual in nature. During CHAPTER ONE, instead, we collected a very high percentage of memories related to sexual activities. We think that this is the result of the fact that during CHAPTER TWO, the public talked on the phone while surrounded by strangers in a crowded gallery space. During CHAPTER ONE, in contrast, almost everyone left a message from their own phone with no strangers around.

1.6 MORE QUESTIONS This is a collection of longterm questions that will help advance the project and questions related to CHAPTER THREE. Would it be different to present the work in a demonstrative way during CHAPTER THREE? For example instead of exhibiting collected memories, the focus could be on explaining how the project works.

If during CHAPTER THREE the work is presented in a very crowded space, will that mean that no intimate memories will be collected?

In that case, CHAPTER FOUR will have to try and present the project in a way that allows people to share memories in an intimate fashion. On the contrary, if we gather intimate memories, we can rule out the theory that gallery spaces aren't the best setting for having people share intimate memories.

If during CHAPTER THREE there are several interactive projects near MNEMODRONE and the public has a very limited amount of time to see them all, this could lead to a 10

superficial engagement with the project. At the end we will calculate the average length of the memories collected during CHAPTER THREE and compare it to the previous average length in order to determine this possibility.

Is it possible for a machine to act based on collective memories?

What kind of memories are people willing to share with a machine?

Are we ready to believe that a machine can develop a personality?

What’s the difference between memory, personality and consciousness?

Is it possible to develop a consciousness based on collective memories?

Can consciousness be artificially developed?

What’s the relationship between memory and consciousness?

What kind of relationship between humans and machines can emerge from the drone-collected data?

What makes people start or stop collaborating with machines?

Will people experience the project as a new invasion of their precarious privacy?

Will people think of it as a scientific experiment, an event, a game or all of these things in various combinations?

Will people refuse to take part in it?

And what can that tell us about humans?

Are we able to share memories with a machine in the same way we share memories with a real person?

Is the Bergsonian idea that memory contains a living dynamic automatism applicable to machines?

1.7 FOLLOWING CHAPTERS

FIRST POSSIBILITY: we decide to develop further collaborations and extend the timeline of the project.

MNEMODRONE keeps collecting human memories through public apparitions, while developing its “personality” based on the collected data. The way MNEMODRONE will react to those memories is an open question that we won’t answer alone. In order to develop an A.I. platform able to modify itself through data analysis, we would collaborate with one or more A.I. researchers.

SECOND POSSIBILITY: we decide to end MNEMODRONE's public appearances, without actually developing a specific A.I. but instead starting the FINAL CHAPTER.

1.8 FINAL CHAPTER

INTERDISCIPLINARY INTERPRETATIONS At the end, we will have access to the database of memories people have shared with MNEMODRONE. We intend to use that material to understand how people engaged with MNEMODRONE: what the limits, concerns, important points and ambiguities were in this process. We will draw from this material in order to create a complex body of artworks. Even if every appearance of MNEMODRONE is an event on its own, the project will only be complete after sifting through the collected memories.

For the FINAL CHAPTER, we will focus on the issues and questions raised by the project in an interdisciplinary way that goes beyond the limits of scientific and social analysis, and speculate on possible answers.

PART 2 OBSERVATIONS

MNEMODRONE – CHAPTER TWO

2.1 NUMBER OF MEMORIES

For CHAPTER TWO we gathered 31 memories over three days of a gallery-based exhibition, a talk, and an indoor performance. This also includes one memory recorded during the setup of the exhibition and 4 messages that contain no sound, because we suppose the person didn't know what to say or changed his\her mind about sharing a memory.

2.2 AVERAGE LENGTH

Just as for CHAPTER ONE, the messages were limited to 2 minutes, but the average length of the messages recorded was 38.27 seconds.

To calculate this average a few considerations were necessary: - Two recorded messages were only one second long, and we weren't sure whether to include them or not.

- First, we decided to calculate the average message length including those two one-second-long messages and we obtained: 37.03 seconds Then we recalculated the average without considering them, and we obtained 39.51 seconds.

- Finally, we calculated the average between these two results, obtaining 38.27 seconds, which is the final result.

CHAPTER ONE average: 38.23 CHAPTER TWO average: 38.27 For CHAPTER ONE, the average length was only 0.04 shorter. Since there isn't any substantial difference between the averages, we can hypothesize that the location and the type of presentation of the 17

project that we gave didn't significantly impact the length of the collected messages.

2.3 MOST COMMON TOPICS

For CHAPTER TWO, almost everyone talked about a memory or the act of remembering, whereas in CHAPTER ONE, only one person didn't and told a story instead. We had hypothesized that the story was a way of creating distance from the message itself, or of anonymizing it, since it was also the only sexually explicit message.

We still can't rule out this hypothesis since no one told a story during CHAPTER TWO.

2.4 EXCEPTIONS

During CHAPTER TWO, one third of the thirty one collected messages were not memories but some other kind of message. Of all these exceptions, around half of them (six) can be considered as attempts to directly interact with MNEMODRONE (giving a compliment, asking a question, offering a tip). One message was a reflection on war and drones; one message was directed to the artists and not to MNEMODRONE; one message was about a personal worry related to the previous day but not a strictly a memory (from a conceptual perspective we could still consider it a memory, though); and, finally, one message was a generic thank-you to the festival.

With this last exception, still indirectly related to MNEMODRONE, all messages, even when not strictly memories, showed some kind of connection with MNEMODRONE.

2.5 GENDER

During CHAPTER ONE, we talked to an equal number of men and women, but the majority of messages gathered were created by females (10 out of 14). We hypothesized that there may have been a link between this finding and the fact that the project was presented by us (two males). We therefore tried to have the project present itself by limiting our interaction with the public (we would explain the project only when people directly asked us, while during CHAPTER ONE we would reach out to random people in a public space). As a result, this time the ratio was approximately 50/50. We recorded 13 messages by males, and 12 by females.

Additionally, in 5 messages it wasn't clear the sex of the person calling MNEMODRONE, making the exact ratio unclear. For CHAPTER THREE, we will decide whether to interact with people like in CHAPTER ONE or not, and we will then see if our current findings can be temporarily confirmed.

NOTE: Since we are still talking about a relatively small 21

number of messages, these findings must be considered purely provisory and as an introduction to further research.

2.6 HI\HELLO\BYE\THANK YOU

During CHAPTER ONE, only 2 people out of 14 said "hello\hi" to MNEMODRONE. People also interacted with it through their own mobile phones. During CHAPTER TWO, on the other hand, people were asked to use a special phone boot, which would make the experience less intrusive (for them). 11 people out of 25 (audible messages) said either "hi"; "hello"; "bye", as if they were talking with a being that was able to understand them. 7 people said "hi"; 4 people said "bye" and among them one message simply consisted in a "hi" that for obvious reason wasn't answered back. For the first time someone said "thank you" to MNEMODRONE. NEW HYPOTHESIS: we had hypothesized that the lack of "hi/hello"s during CHAPTER ONE was due to MNEMODRONE's lack of human\animal connotations. But since MNEMODRONE was basically identical in the context of CHAPTER TWO, we can develop a few hypotheses to explain why people interacted differently with it: 23

- the drone was nearby, and not flying too far from the public, creating a sense of proximity that encouraged people to interact more directly with it.

- the drone was presented together with an extensive documentation of the project, so that people would perceive it more as an advanced interactive experiment and less as a funny public divertissement.

- the context of the festival must always be considered as the frame of every recorded message.

This means that people were already part of a highly social situation, where formality such as "hi/hello" are almost instinctual. For CHAPTER ONE, in contrast, most of the messages were shared by people spending their leisure time on their own in a public space like a park.

NOTE: Based on the context of CHAPTER THREE, we may be able to confirm one or more of these hypotheses, however we are temporarily limited to our small sample of shared memories.

2.7 TAG SYSTEM

For CHAPTER ONE we had created a TAG SYSTEM. The TAGS used were as follows: − SEX − AGE − LOCATION − MEMORY − BOYFRIEND − NEW YORK − EXPLICIT SEX − SEXUAL INNUENDO − FRIENDSHIP − DEATH − FUNNY − CALL ME BACK − CHILDREN − BEING BORN − SECRET − NOSTALGIA − QUESTION − DRONE − GIRLFRIEND − MONEY While the first three are basic TAGS present in every message, the other TAGS were used when the 25

message referred to that specific subject. When the age, sex or location is not clear, it is still possible to use the TAG SYSTEM excluding that specific information.

For CHAPTER TWO we built on the previous system, adding more TAGS when we encountered new relevant topics. Some TAGS that already existed became more prominent (like "CHILDREN", for example, while other TAGS that were very common during CHAPTER ONE (like "EXPLICIT SEX") were never present during CHAPTER TWO. Since this may depend on the setting of our presentation (it would be difficult for people to share memories about sexual experiences in a crowded gallery and much easier while walking alone in a park, as it happened during CHAPTER ONE), we decided to keep all the TAGS created during CHAPTER ONE even when they weren't used. In fact, they may reappear in one of the next chapters.

NOTE ON THE TAG "DRONE": After CHAPTER ONE we decided to use the tag "DRONE" not only when people were talking about drones, but also for memories where people were 26

Additionally, for CHAPTER TWO we used an automated "keywords recognition system" using the online service VoiceBase. The way the system works is by automatically recognizing words that are considered particularly important.

We used those automatically highlighted words as additional TAGS, but they are always preceded by the letter "A.K." which stands for "Automated Keyword." This way we can integrate the manual recognition of TAGS (based on our judgment) with an automated system, while enabling us to distinguish between the two.

But, in fact, the opposite is true.

While the TAG "MEMORY" is clearly the most common in both categories, this happened simply because the word "memory" works as an Automated Keyword just as the concept of "memory" works for our TAG SYSTEM. In other cases we have Automated Keywords like "remember" that we had also registered using the TAG "MEMORY". This means that A.K. TAGS are always literal, while TAGS are conceptual, and have to summarize more words and concepts in as few TAGS as possible. For example the TAG "FEMALE PARTNER" includes words such as "girlfriend" and "wife" that are also there as A.K. TAGS but not in the same form. In conclusion, our TAG SYSTEM at the moment is a helpful tool that allows us to analyze, summarize and deconstruct the memories in our archive.

As we could have foreseen, the most common words in MNEMODRONE's VOCABULARY are very common words in spoken English. For that which concerns the development of a drone language, it is important to highlight such words, especially if they are common. But in order to highlight more meaningful things for our analysis, we decided to apply the same procedure and recreate the statistics above without considering the most common words in English. In order to identify such words we used the list available at www.wordfrequency.info (considered to be the most accurate list of words in American English). The list is based on COCA (the 450 million word Corpus of Contemporary American English). From this list we selected the one hundred most common words and excluded those from our list. In this way we tried to highlight more meaningful data and possibly notice the presence of uncommon words that may be important in the collected memories.

In fact, once we excluded the most common words in English, what is left are words that talk about the same topics we identified without a strictly scientific methodology, following instead our discernment and judgment (TAGS). In this way we have a direct confirmation of the correctness of our system, which is currently analyzing the collected memories in two main ways: 1. using a system of TAGS based on the topics we recognize in every 52

3.2 EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS

Every spoken word necessarily implies noise emission. Such noise can be understood as an additional layer of meaning that goes beyond the literary meaning of a word.

MNEMODRONE's LANGUAGE will not only be based on a VOCABULARY composed of all recorded words, but also on EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS detected through sound analysis and a set od what we'll call EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS (E.P.). For example, the same word may have different meanings when associated with different sounds, and an understanding of sound variations means an increased ability to decipher the meaning of a message\memory. While we haven't yet built the necessary software to implement the EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS in MNEMODRONE's language, this chapter will present the set of E.P. on which the software will be based.

EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS: QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE The following section refers only to sound analysis for EMOTIONAL PARAMETERS and doesn't take into account any other methodology currently adopted for VOCABULARY, conceptual analysis, etc. Such methodologies are discussed in great detail in other chapters of this publication. Please keep this in mind since MNEMODRONE's successful development implies the adoption of different parallel methodologies.

Every memory shared with MNEMODRONE will be analyzed using the E.P. that are of two kinds: − −

QUANTITATIVE PARAMETERS (QT.E.P.) QUALITATIVE PARAMETERS (QL.E.P)

QUANTITATIVE PARAMETERS We’ll call QT.E.P. those which are altered by changing the amount of energy applied to a system. There are two basic quantitative parameters: 1.

Variations of STRENGTH and SPEED can occur by jumps or gradually. This means, for example, that a two-minute long memory will normally present a few variations and combinations of STRENGTH and SPEED. Although these could be averaged (for example in order to quantify the average strength of a group of memories compared to another one), the variations are particularly meaningful and will be taken into full consideration.

We recognize four basic variations of STRENGTH and SPEED: 1.

THE EIGHT SIMPLE QUALITATIVE PARAMETERS: Complex QL.E.P.1. PAUSE: a silence between a succession of sounds. Can indicate multiple things, such as temporary suspension, intensity, can generate dramatic or sexual tension or be connected to a confused state, and can indicate consent or disapproval.

Simple QL.E.P.2. ARTICULATION: this indicates the specific way words and sentences are interconnected.

Simple QL.E.P.3. OUTLINE: this indicates the combination of highs and lows in speech.

This sequence directly affects the meaning of a memory, in fact a sudden change of sound can reverse the literary meaning of a sentence. [However, 59

it is not realistic to fully implement the OUTLINE during the initial stages of development of MNEMODRONE's A.I.] Simple QL.E.P.4. ACCENT: the sudden change of force (addition or subtraction) in a specific portion of speech. It could be called a "microparameter", differently from a "macro-parameter" like the OUTLINE. While the OUTLINE takes into account changes that happen in long sentences or in the entirety of a message\memory, the ACCENT is used to identify particular sonic changes in single words.

Simple QL.E.P.5. RHYTHM: the organization of sound through time.

Even when apparently irregular, it can be thought of as a way of organizing and 60

giving structure to speech.

Simple QL.E.P.6. INTENSITY: this parameter has to do with emotional intensity and not strength (for example a memory can be whispered - and this means reduced STRENGTH from a quantitative perspective - but be very intense from an emotional perspective).

Simple QL.E.P.7. BREATHING: this is not focused on the physiologic act of breathing, but on the more or less intentional act of accelerating or decelerating the breath to express different emotional states (for example to scream or to whisper in order to express a specific message).

Simple QL.E.P.8. REPETITION: it can be found in many forms. We will only 61

work with the "anaphora" (repetition of words at the beginning of consecutive sentences); "epizeuxe" (repetition of the same word); "epistrophe" (the repetition of the same word or words at the end of successive phrases); and "anadiplose" (repetition of the last term at the beginning of the next sentence). [We decided to exclude particular cases of REPETITION that weren't important to our goals, such as "assonance", "alliteration", "homophony", and "rhyme"].

I got really terrified, and I was crying, and then eventually my mother found me. And she brought me back to the job site. hmm I don't know why that memory struck me but I figured, you know, if I would I tell it to anybody, I should tell it to a drone.

But my earliest memory I hoped to - think - [maybe thanking someone nearby] a memory of my father in my mother's [inaudible] they were divorcing at that time and we were all wrestling, my father, me, my brother, my sister, were both much older than I. And I was probably around three years old, and we were wrestling in this room and trying to [inaudible] defeat my father, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very large, muscular man. He always sort of terrified me and I remember very distinctively being thrown across the mattress and landing on the other side the lawn. The wrestling match ended [inaudible] because they were worried that I was injured, but I wasn't.

I was fine, and just sort of, pretended to be hurt.

Until I realized he was just incredibly lonely and sad inside, as I was, but I manifested that differently. hmm And so now my message is to the world to go, understand how to be selfless...and I think that would help resolve inner conflicts and other conflicts.

Emilio Vavarella and Daniel Belquer

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Emilio Vavarella was born in Monfalcone (Italy) in 1989. His artistic practice focuses on political philosophy and contemporary technological power. He has studied in Sicily and Barcelona and completed a B.A. at the University of Bologna. In 2013 he completed an M.A. from Iuav University of Venice while also studying abroad at the Bezalel Academy of Tel Aviv and Bilgi University of Istanbul. Emilioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work has been recently shown at Eyebeam, Siggraph Conference, European Media Art Festival, Japan Media Arts Festival, CultureHub Media Art Festival, GLITCH Festival, Biennial of the Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean, Boston Cyberarts Gallery, Jarach Gallery, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina, and has been published in ARTFORUM, Flash Art, Leonardo and WIRED. He currently lives and works in New York.

A contemporary intermedia artist, Daniel Belquer works internationally to blur the temporal frontiers once bounding classic artistic genres from emerging technologies. Daniel has worked as an artist, a Max/MSP a programmer, a designer, a technician, a composer, a teacher, a project manager and as an experimental theater director.

Wearing several hats has kept him engaged with the technical as well as artistic aspects of his installations and theatrical works, incorporating the DIY spirit into his work ethos. Since 1999 he has collaborated and assisted over 2,000 students in music, performance art, acting and programming workshops. He lives and works in New York City, where he's the Head of the Creative Team at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center and founder of Harvestworks' International Art Collective(HIAC). He has recently presented his projects at Transfer Gallery, Hyphen Hub, SESC Copacabana, Agora Arts Center, Spectrum, Harvestworks, Firehouse Gallery, Emily Harvey Gallery, Parsons School of Design, Maker Faire, 3 Legged Dog and the Dark Circuits Festival 176
