EXISTING CONDITIONS

The existing Edward Smith Elementary School has inadequate space, materials, and facilities. The school focuses on inclusion and should have a space that represents its values and allows it to help many more children.

NEW AND PROPOSED SECTION

First off, to help the school accomodate everyone and be truely inclusive, we chose to illimate many of the level changes. We also placed the communal 40’ spaces and K-3 to help separate the 30’ older 50’ and younger students.

LIVING MACHINE

“are a form of biological wastewater treatment designed to mimic the cleansing functions of wetlands.” We decided to incorporate a living machine to not only cleanse the wastewater on site but to be used as a teaching tool.

The living machine spans all three floors of the school in a central courtyard that acts as a gathering space, a teaching tool and a type of circulation. As the levels rise, the water becomes cleaner and cleaner.

The living machine becomes a sculptural expression of sustainablility that is linked to the Living Classroom by the water that is cleaned and then flows down the railings of the stairs, and through the floor.

LIVING CLASSROOM

The living classroom is an interior courtyard positioned in the existing cafeteria space. It utilizes the high celings and the natural sunlight to create a space for clases to gather outside of their traditional classrooms.

CLASSROOM AND GYM

The redesign incorporated spacious classrooms and additional break out spaces. Also, a new and larger gym was needed to accomodate all the students and allow them to have gym class more than once a week.
