INTERVIEW

WORLD’S FIRST INTERVIEW WITH

EMMA DOKIC

T

world class journalist Emily Allen talks exclusively to the new rnb sensation

EMMA DOKIC

he first thing I notic about Emma Dokic – aside from her individual diva style: thick black long hair, crimson velvetblack dress, white stiletto high heels, flawless makeup and her designer jet black two piece – is that she is shining. She looks captivated and confident. The last time we spoke to Emma was in 2012 in Croydon alongside her other group members, but 3 years on she’s alone releasing her verbally explicit material and about to go on a worldwide tour.

on the eve of her world conquering tour about her album, her favourite photo frame and life being single

This time we’re in New York City, a city known for its high end stores, amazing night life and of course the home to celebrities. A couple of blocks down from Emma’s hotel, you can find the famous night club Mahiki, known for its a-list celebrities and its scandalous drunks from night to morning. Head in the opposite direction and you can find Times Square, you can expect to be shoved along the streets by tourists and New Yorkers trying to grab the latest apple deal or the new fashion range in Prada. First glance of Emma’s suite resembles a young girl’s bedroom; clothes covering every inch of the four post bed, wine stains on the supposable cream carpet, and a pile of empty water bottles in every corner (literally a hundred of them). “Oh don’t mind the crap in my room the cleaners due to come this afternoon” she utters to me as she kicks the empty take away boxes under

the bed.

“This is one of my favourite places to come and stay, I love how the room never changes and how it always feels like home” she articulates, sat on her window ledge looking out at the skyline, I have to admit the orange glow of the city that never sleeps is calming, I could gaze out the window for ages, but there is no time for gazing when you’re in the presence of a hyper active Emma Dokic. Emma has come to New York to promote her new single, and this time she is doing it all alone. During the interview she doesn’t cry over the split of her band but yet laughs whilst spilling champagne down her Gucci attire, even when I mention her ex boyfriend she giggles and says “He was a right fucker, did me no favours, but he did make me stronger, I feel no pain now and I am ready to go and show New York City what they’ve been missing”. Throughout the rest of the 4 hour interview her new found confidence shines through, her hysterical laughter appears every now and then and her shocking explicit vocabulary remains throughout, she really is great company. What is different now then? Firstly she is a solo artist; her first single is finally being released and shows her new rnb explicit grime genre, secondly she is single again – she is also defiantly looking for a new man (if you’re 6ft, blonde and outgoing you’re defiantly in with a chance)

After re applying her personalised crystal covered Nars lipstick, she finally lets us have a listen to her new single which is released on 2nd January. Without revealing too much, the single is defiantly PG as it has a sexual undertone and probably uses every swear word available, you can hear the rnb through the backing track. “I’ve finally found a genre of music that is me, I feel like I can express my feelings finally, every word in the song relates to an experience I have gone through” she says this whilst digging through her hand bag trying to find her pack of trident limited edition raspberry flavoured gum. “This single is my feelings, it is my emotions and I don’t give a fuck if it sounds to sexual, or if it is nothing like the music I made whilst in a band, this finally is a piece of music I am happy with – if people have something bad to say about it,

hated wearing the pink and yellow skirts, I hated it all”. As were sat watching the music videos from her past in the girl band, I study Emma and realise that she was never the pop princess type. The videos are stopped as Emma then opens up a folder on her Apple Mac and enters a 35 character password “better safe than sorry” is yelled out as she laughs at the shocked expression upon my face. Luckily it is just her music video and not a sex scene filmed with her ex like she admitted to filming in the 2012 interview. Dokic’s music video does the single justice, her provocative dance moves make her look sexier than ever and the setting is amazing, makes the music video have a real story to it. “The dance moves and the setting choice were my only way of expressing my emotions and I chose my own outfits for each set, I didn’t want to look the same as every other artist, I didn’t want it to be boring either so I think I just made it as wild as I could” After watching the video we’re left feeling shocked, but in a good way of course. “I want my music to be a surprise to people, I want to break peoples stereotypes of me, I for once wanted to do something for myself” Dokic explains as she gets up to answer the door to room service (she just ordered another bottle of champagne)

I WAS SCARED OF WHAT THE PUBLIC WERE GOING TO SAY then don’t expect me to listen” With over 3 million followers on twitter and 7 million subscribers on YouTube, the break up with her girl band really did affect her confidence. “I didn’t want to leave my home back in London, I was scared of what the public were going to say” she explains whilst chewing her piece of gum. “I think the break up was needed, although it made me hit rock bottom, it really has made me stronger, I feel fucking fabulous now, I never wanted to be part of a girl group, I didn’t want to appeal to little girls, I

Lounging around in Emma’s hotel room is so different to the last interview. This interview is more relaxed, I feel like a celebrity myself as she makes me feel comfortable in her hotel suite and talks to me as she would her best friend. Mid way through the interview Dokic abandons the room to go pick up Kendall Jenner from the hotel lobby. Whilst she is gone I sit there glazing

at her suite, the room is a mess, piles of clothes are on every inch of the floor. However I notice one thing, her bed side table is spotless. Sat on top is a glass lamp (which changes colours may I just add), a small makeup collection and an image of herself with her mother. “I see you’ve found the photo of me and my mother” she remarks as she walks in linking arms with Kendall (who is just as beautiful in real life as she is on instagram). “My mother died when I was 18, she was an artist herself, different kind to me though, she used to produce classical music, she played at the Royal Albert Hall once but I was too young to go to

the show” She explains this whilst applying a new layer of makeup. “My mother was the one who inspired me to become a musician, she always said to me she wanted me to become

artist, as long as my career included the word artist she said she would be happy. That’s why I own such a large makeup collection, being a makeup artist is my other talent” she smirks.

MY MOTHER WAS THE ONE WHO INSPIRED ME TO BECOME A MUSICIAN either a makeup artist or a music

THE 3 ALBUMS WHICH CHANGED DOKIC’S LIFE

1RNB,-IT REALLY loudHEKLPED BY rHIANNA , THIS ALBUM INSPIRED ME TO START WRITING ME DISCOVER WHO I REALLY WAS OR INFACT WHO

I REALLY WANTED TO BE. i LISTENED TO THIS AT LEAST 3 TIMES A DAY, I USE TO TRY FIGURE OUT WHAT SHE MEANT BY HER LYRICS AND THAT IS WHAT HELPED ME WRITE SUCH EMOTIONAL SONGS,

2THIS-ONE,19ADELE BY ADELE - THERE IS NO ALBUM THAT TOUCHED ME MORE THAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY INSPIRATION EVEN WHEN I WAS

YOUNGER, HER LYRICS AND HER VOICE ALWAYS WERE SO EMOTIONAL AND MADE ME TEAR UP, the fact that she wrote from her personal experiences also played a huge role in inspiring me to start writing from my own, without this album i do not think i could be the single artist i am today - EMINEM - TALK ABOUT SAVING THE BEST TILL LAST, THIS ALBUM WAS AND STILL IS WHAT I LIVE BY, HIS LYRICS ARE SOMETHING ELSE, I THINK ANYONE CAN RELATE TO THEM. Without this album i wouldnt be half as interested in music as i am now.

Looking into the mirror making the final adjustments to her freshly made up face and looking even better than she did before (which we didn’t think possible) Dokic wanders off to her gold plated mini fridge and offers us a spinach smoothie (we turn down the offer and stick to our can of coke), she returns back to her bed with a photo album in her hand, she flicks through it. It is full of photos of her on nights out and photos from being back stage at different tours, our favourite photo was the photo of Emma with Pia Mia, Chris Brown, Rhianna and Jay z all dressed up, I can’t say what they were dressed as due to Emma agreeing to keep it a secret (but lets just say the photo is PG). Still flicking through the photo album, I see a selection

of images of her foot, looking closer I see a tattoo on the back of her heel. “This is the only tattoo I have and the only one I will have, it hurt like a bitch” she then laughs at herself and continues to go on “It means faith in Greek, the word means a lot to me as my mum always had faith in me which taught me to always have faith in myself. I think the most important thing about being successful is being confident in everything you do, and this year I am confident and I’ve never felt better” stroking her fingers over the photo with a tear rolling down her face (showing her vulnerable side) she says “If I can get people to be confident in me and not just my music, I know I would have done not only myself proud but my my mum too and that is when I know i’ve become successful” wiping her tear away and beginning to show a smile she looks right at me and says “I am back and my music is better than ever” with a smirk across her face, she grabs her clutch bag, slips on a pair of Jimmy Choos and strides out of the hotel suite alongside Kendall slamming the door behind her, all we can hear is the echo of Emma and Kendall yelling the lyrics of her new single…it is clear that Emma is only just starting to live her dream.
