MEDIA STUDIES

.EVALUATION.

What have you learned from your audience feedback? As the genre of my music video is predominantly mainstream indie, my target audience is broad but ideally within the age group of 16-24. Mainstream indie is a popular genre of music that many people enjoy so this means a large amount of people will listen to the single. Generally my target demographic would be a female skew, aged 16-24 as the video follows a female actress and her independent story line of her getting ready and then realising she isn’t good enough to go out so ends up staying in and this is a storyline that I feel many within this age group can relate to. My secondary demographic would be the male skew aged 18-30 as they may enjoy the fact that it is a mainstream music video and potentially watch it due to the “attractiveness” of my female performer as this is becoming a more common aspect to why people choose to watch certain music videos. The

gender demographic is a 70/30 split with my audience being primarily female. As my main target audience is within the age bracket of 16-24 they are all teenagers and young adults so the majority of them would be in education, part time jobs or apprenticeships so will be consuming my music video in their free time. A majority of my audience will be within the social class ABC1 and they would be able to watch my music video for pleasure in their spare time when they are not working. The psychographic for my audience would be “main stream” as the music video comes under the indie genre and ideally would be seen in the charts or on the “most watched” category on websites such as YouTube. So therefore my main demographic will be likely to stick to the trends and follow the charts or watch Youtube which are all places where my music video could be found.

In considering my target audience in detail I knew that I needed to get feedback directly from the audience I aimed to make my target demographic. By getting direct feedback during the process of making my music video meant that I knew my final product would appeal to them, as they were able to suggest improvements whilst also highlighting what I had done well in my music video. I gathered audience feedback in a couple of ways, one of the ways I did so was carrying out small individual interviews with my fellow students who were part of my target demographic, male / females aged 17-18. I found that by doing this enabled me to get constructive criticism that I wouldn’t find to harsh as I knew that it was all helping me to create the best music video for my chosen demographic. I found that by doing feedback interviews was a more honest and effective

way of gathering feedback compared to online surveys as I find that by using them for feedback is not detailed enough. The most beneficial audience feedback I received was from my media teachers as they knew and understood the criteria for music videos better than me and my peers did so they were able to give me in depth feedback on how to edit my footage and how to make it appealing to both the media expert and my target demographic. Although this was the most beneficial feedback, I think that the feedback from my audience played a main role in how my final product turned out because I valued their opinion the most as I knew they were the type of people who would be watching my video. Some of the feedback

I received during the production of my music video was that I need to change my original narrative as it didn’t work when all the footage was placed together. Therefore I responded to this feedback by filming more footage which helped the narrative flow and helped the storyline be more understandable. Therefore

as it allowed my music video to make more sense and appeal to my target demographic. When I had finished my music video, I got individual feedback from my peer, they said that I needed to colour grade my footage so that it was more visually pleasing as it was currently looking quite dull and unprofessional. I took this suggestion into consideration and colour graded my footage using the Premiere software so that it was more appealing to my target audience.

Overall I believe that the audience feedback was a crucial part of me creating a successful music video as it allowed me to be successful as a media student but also successful in adhering to my target audiences wants and needs to what they wanted my this piece of constructive criticism was extremely helpful final product to look like.
