In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
M
y music magazine “MFY” adheres to and challenges the forms and conventions of real media products. When creating my magazine, I realised that the “indie” genre was far too broad for me to adhere to the codes and conventions without making it look like a mixture of two genres. One thing that adhered to the “indie” style magazine was my models and type of shots I planned to use with in my magazine as they gave off the “indie” vibe. However I think that in general my magazine followed the key codes and conventions of real media products with mine being similar to the music magazine NME. The front cover of my magazine for example sticks to the codes and conventions of music magazines with my image choice, font and overall layout. To begin with I ensured that before creating my magazine that I had a house style that I was determined to follow and would be used
throughout my whole magazine. To determine that I stuck to one house style, I had some initial ideas of a colour scheme (black, red, grey), the colour scheme included uni sex colours so that my magazine could appeal to both genders, whilst also creating a cool, fresh, modern connotation that reflects the genres, style and types of artist that I intended to feature within my magazine, as red is a fierce colour that reflects the strength and confidence of my artists. My colour scheme is similar to NME’s, I wouldn’t say I copied the colour scheme just took it for inspiration as my magazine is of a similar genre to NME and I would like my magazine to give of the same vibe. In addition before creating my magazine I was set on using the colour black, as black is a universal colour that doesn’t appeal to a particular sex, it also has connotations of power, elegance and mystery, which are all traits that the artists within my magazine have. Moreover, to adhere to the codes and conventions of a front cover I used my feature artist Emma Dokic as the full bleed image, the image was a full body shot of Emma which showed her outfit and her prestige positioning, this image was similar to how artists are styled and shot in other music magazines such as NME and Q. I believe that my image adheres to the codes and conventions of real media products as the style of the shot, the makeup and the established artists appearing on the front cover are similar to other successful music magazines. Moreover
I chose to have Emma Dokic as my feature artist as she is returning to the music industry after a recent split with her girl group which caused her to have a break from her music career; this is a typical story that a music magazine would feature. Moving on from this, by having Emma Dokic as my feature artist and appearing on my front, I ensured that my main sell line was based on her and that my feature article was only focused on her. I did this my making the information about her the largest on the front cover, and placing all other sell lines around the full bleed image. By having my front cover laid out like I decided conforms to the conventions of existing music magazines, as well as magazines in general as they all have their main sell line revolving around their feature artist that features of the front cover. Similarly on my front cover I made sure that my other sell lines revolved around the most interesting articles/assets mentioned on the contents page especially thoughts that were under the “feature” section on my contents page , I also made sure that the more important sell lines were bigger and bolder to attract people’s attention. By having the four sell lines on my magazine front cover gives the audience and clear understanding of what will feature in my magazine alongside the feature article, it will also help to increase sales as people who are interested in what they see on the front cover are more likely to purchase the magazine. By having sell lines it allows my magazine to conform to the typical music magazine. In addition the mast head I chose for my magazine was “MFY” I chose this as the name of my magazine as it stands for “Music For You” and I wanted my magazine to be aimed at all kind of individuals and for them to feel like they had a personal connection with my magazine. I believe that “MFY” is the perfect name for my magazine as it includes
all different kinds of genres, which allows my magazine to have something for everyone, this relates to the name as there really is “music for you” in every issue or available on the online magazine. The purpose of choosing this name was so that it would appeal to a variety of audiences, I wanted my magazine to be able to cater for any type of person so that I would receive greater profit, and also my music magazine is one that doesn’t yet exist. Similarly I styled my masthead in a large bold font that I found online, I used house style colours red, white and black as this would help my magazine stand out to others when placed on a shelf. My masthead is also the magazine logo with it just being the three letters “MFY”, by having it like this will allow my magazine name to become recognisable which will help boost profit. I also had the bar code placed in the bottom corner of my front cover, the
images have a square shape and placed these where the text wasn’t needed to keep a simple structure. I titled my contents page in the top right corner so that it was clear what the page was, the title will be in the same place for every issue so that my magazine has continuity. I also include a small social media section as I believe this is a key way to market my magazine as my audience would all be typical users of social media sites themselves. This also adheres to the codes and conventions of music magazines as they all generally have a social media section, so that they can advertise using apps such as twitter, facebook and instagram. I also included the date and issue number in the top right corner of my magazine, these are important aspects of a magazine contents page as they allow collectors of the magazine to know what issue it is so there collection is organized.
“MY MAGAZINE HAS
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE” bar code is a key magazine code and convention so by having it on the front cover allows people to buy the magazine easily / find out the price. Furthermore, for my contents page I tried to adhere to the normal codes and conventions that you see in music magazines, such as a similar layout, photo choice and type of font I used. Firstly I continued my house style onto the contents page as it will run through the whole magazine issue. I then used my house style to design the layout of the double page spread. Similar to music magazines like “Q” and “NME” I made sure my contents page had a clear layout that was easy to navigate round and read. I made sure it was clear by aligning my text into columns and having column gutters; I also made all my
Following on from this I labelled the headings of contents page using the same font used on the front cover sell lines; this allowed them to be bold and readable whilst keeping continuity. I titled my headings with the typical content such as regulars, on tour, features and on the cover. I also included a band index on the
right hand side of the page, this was placed inside a bold red box to make it stand out in contrast to everything else on my contents page, by having a band index it allows my audience to look quickly for a particular artist/ band to see if they feature within the issue. Within these headings of magazine content, I had subheadings of the contents of my magazine. The artists and the features that I included reflect that my magazine includes only established artists. I then wrote small summaries of the articles underneath the subheading to give the audience a small amount of information on what the articles include to see if it interests them. This follows the codes and conventions of a typical music magazine. To show the readers where to find the articles shown on the contents page I included page numbers from 12 to 84 which is just a little less than a normal music magazine. This adheres to the codes and conventions of any form of magazine, as page numbers act as a navigation tool for the audience and allows them to find the information quickly. I also included page numbers on the images of the artists/bands; this gives the reader the chance to see the artists that are included within my magazine. The largest image on my contents page is of my main feature artists she is the centre
of visual interest, this reveals that she is the focal point of my magazine and emphasises her importance, this relates to the typical codes and conventions of music magazines. Final aspect of my music magazine is that I included subscription information, this adheres to the codes and conventions of a music magazine as they always include this information on the contents page. I decided to have subscription information as it provides the reader with an opportunity to subscribe to the magazine yearly and save them
by introducing Emma with a large image of Emma spread across one side and a small amount of text that summarises the article. I began my first double page spread for the article with a large image of Emma on one of the pages and a large heading at the start of the article on the page opposite. This conforms to the typical codes and conventions as Emma is already an established artist so it makes sense why she is the feature artists. One of my double page spreads was just a large image of Emma spread
“MY MAIN FEATURE ARTIST AS SHE IS THE CENTER OF VISUAL INTEREST” money. Next is my double page spread, for these I mostly stuck to the conventions of music magazines. Firstly I adhered to the conventions of having an introductory page
across both pages with a pull quote on the left hand side, this double page spread can be removed and used as a poster for Emma’s fans. The overall layout of my double page spreads conform to the codes
and conventions as they include the article, images and pull quotes. I chose not to set out my article in a question answer format as I thought this wasn’t very professional and looked quite basic, instead I wrote a documentation of the time a reported spent with her as by doing it this way it looked professional and modern. Final aspect of my double page spreads was that I produced a tour poster for Emma tour dates so the audience who read the article could decide if they would like to see her on tour. I also included her social media sites, using some of her recent instagram posts and one of her tweets. By including her social media it allows those who read the article to go give her a follow so they can be kept updated with her life. Social media allows there to be a viral hype which will also allows Emma’s fan base to grow. This differs from the typical codes and conventions but I thought it was important to include as now days social media plays such a huge role within society.
how does your media product represent a particular social group?
M
y media product represents social groups through the use of costumes, makeup, positioning, body language and the tone of my magazine content. I have adjusted my magazine in order to communicate and connect with the reader in a style that they will find interesting and keep them engaged. The social group I have chosen to represent in my magazine are individuals who have an interest in fashion, socialising and the
Emma a variation of representations, classy, rebellious and seductive as well as a casual portrayal. I did this through the use of mise en scene particularly through her positioning and her body language. I styled Emma in a selection of outfits/ looks to adhere to the typical music magazine feature article conventions. The most stand out style was when Emma wore her white body con dress which made her look sophisticated and classy, she also wore a full face makeup whilst sat in a chair which looked like a throne and stared directly into the camera, I used this style as my front cover image. I represented Emma like this as the style was seductive due to her eye contact with the audience and it represents her as powerful and prestige which is what the female audience of my magazine will look up to as an inspiration whilst the male audience will just look at her due to her seductive positioning and style.
“a passionate, classy, seductive individual persona”
music industry. There social class is ABC1 and I would expect the social group to all be working or in higher education with a part time job so that they have a high enough income that allows them to have a disposable income which they are able to spend on my monthly magazine issues as well as concerts and festivals. Therefore in order to represent this social group accurately, I enabled my magazine to adhere to these interests through the use of mise en scene, particularly in reference to the main artist and the props I used in the photo-shoots. Firstly, I represented the particular social group of my magazine mainly through the representation of the artists. I focused the main representation on my feature artist Emma Dokic. Her character was representing mainly the dance and R&B genre but in having her as an established artist already I was able to style her in a variety of ways which would allow my audience to look up to her as a fashion icon and connect with her outfit choices. Throughout the magazine I gave
Moreover, her body language in some of the images does adhere to Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theorem. This is shown in one of the images which is a close up of Emma touching her face whilst looking directly into the camera, this automatically adheres to the conventional sexualised woman portrayal as the hands are highly sexualised parts of the female body and the direct eye contact creates a sexual vibe whilst giving the audience a sense of her power and dominance making her look like a powerful individual female. Beside from the front cover, her powerful body language is continued throughout the magazine, particularly on the double page spreads where there are images of her lying on the ground looking directly into the camera, these type of images show her innocent
side, the dark background with the light focusing on her makes her look innocent and alone which also illustrates the backing story of her character as explained in the article. Also on the other double page spreads there are images where she is holding musical props such as a microphone and stood in a natural non sexual manner; this represents her to be passionate about her music whilst also making her an inspiration to the audience of my magazine. I also used props on her tour poster, I gave Emma a pair of head phones which allowed her to be represented as cool and down to earth, it also allowed her to be represented as an individual herself whilst relating the prop to the music industry showing her passionate side. This passionate, classy, individual, seductive persona continues throughout the tone of her article. I decided to set my article out in a fairly casual way as I didn’t want it too look too planned and boring as her character is far from boring. Therefore in setting out the article in her hotel room and describing her setting it enables my readers to have an insight into what her everyday life style is like and this representation allows her to be relatable to the audience. As well as this I represented her individual through the use of her taboo language within the article. Indeed I did not just represent her as a person but R&B / dance as a genre itself , as it is typical
what kind of institution might distribute your media prodcut and why?
T
he type of institution that would distribute my media product would be “Hearst magazines UK” this is one of the UK’s leading media companies, one of its most popular magazines is “cosmopolitan” which has a total circulation of 3,032,211 a month. I am hoping that Hearst magazines will be able to put my magazine MFY in a similar standard to NME who circulates 15,830 issues every 6 months. With Hearst magazines distributing 19 well known magazines in the UK it would be an ideal company to distribute my magazine with as they are already a popular brand. The brands that it distributes consists of are seventeen, car and drive, Marie Claire, woman’s day and Elle. Of the brands that they distribute they don’t have any music magazines, making Hearst an ideal distributor for my magazine as they currently do not distribute anything of a similar genre/style to MFY. For this exact reason I wouldn’t chose a distribution company such as Bauer media as they already distribute successful music magazines such as Q and Kerrang which are both similar styles to my magazine which would mean it would be difficult for them to distribute MFY and make it successful. Therefore, this further highlights that Hearst media is a suitable institution to distribute my magazine. Additionally with Hearst not already distributing a magazine similar to MFY, I believe that it would enable my magazine to achieve a large target demographic that I hope for. This is because Hearst magazines UK is a global company which reaches out to millions of users monthly on its website. Alongside this it has a partnership company Hearst Corporation which has offices in New York and LA. This therefore could potentially allow my magazine to be distributed globally allowing a variety of liked artists I include to be appreciated by a larger audience,
thus in having connections with a global distributor would allow me to achieve the goal for my magazine to reach a large demographic. As I have mentioned Hearst magazines operates on a variety media platforms, both print and digital. Therefore they would be ideal in allowing my magazine to be produced on a variety of print and digital spaces, as well as having the print copy placed on bus stations and billboards. I would also like MFY to have its own website as well as new media in the form of social networking. I have incorporated the idea of social media within my magazine already by providing the twitter page and website link on my contents page. Therefore with Hearst magazines already operating on all these platforms means that MFY social media should be accessible. I decided to incorporate social media as it is now a key convention of many magazines, particularly in music magazines, in order for audiences to keep up to date on the new information that they would usually have to wait to read in the next monthly issue of the magazine. Therefore in Hearst magazines operating on this global scale on both print and digital level makes it a great distributor for my magazine. Additionally I would also like my magazine to synergise with reading festival, the idea of synergising with this company would be that for part of the year they would sponsor my magazine and give away some festival tickets as a competition giveaway. In relation to reading there would also be a MFY stage at the festival that plays a selection of artists that have been included in my magazine over the
past year, this would also help the upcoming artists become better known within the music industry. Moreover as well as digital media I would also like MFY to be distributed and promoted on radio stations such as radio one and capital as these are radio stations that I expect my target audience to be listening to as they are radio stations which play a variety of artists as does my magazine feature a variety. Therefore with Hearst magazine being a large successful distribution company it means that this kind of promotion could be easily possible making Hearst magazines an appropriate distributor.
who would be the target audience for your media product?
M
y target audience for MFY is 17-29 year old ABC1 male and females. I chose this age as I think a majority will have a disposable income or pocket money (due to their ABC1 social class) that they will be able to spend on music related items or events such as festival tickets, albums and merchandise. Additionally at this age they will have a lot of spare time to spend reading and developing their interest in music. Also not only will they be able to afford my magazine but also use it as a conversation topic in their friendship circle. Due to my magazine featuring a variety of established artists from different genres means that my audience will consist of mainstreamers. The genre of my demographic will be split into a 55:45 female: male skew. This is due to females being able to find more interests and common grounds with the artists that feature within my magazine. However the split is fairly equal as I want my magazine to appeal to both genders of a variety of ages, this enables me to have a larger audience which will result in more profit. My audience will all have a passion for music and the industry itself, specifically the indie, rnb and house genre styles of music (artists such as Drake, Tinashe, 1975 and Justin Bieber). As well the audience will all be out
competitions to win nights out at upcoming gigs and concerts.
music content as well as keeping up to date with the industry.
My target audience will have a huge interest in social networking and digital media, especially sites such as twitter, instagram and YouTube. With them being sociable people that like to interact with one another,
As well as having a strong passion for music they will have strong interests in sport, films, shopping and going out. This therefore means that they would enjoy socialising with their friends by going on nights
they will enjoy using the social media connected to my magazine to express their views, make new friendships and share their experiences e.g. concerts, festival, signings. Also my audience will all most likely own new technology such as a smart phone, tablet or laptop, on these platforms they will most likely have apps such as Radio one, spotify, the weekly charts an iTunes so they can listen and download
out or staying in and watching films together or going to the cinema. As well as the interests stated they will also like reading, especially non fiction texts such as magazines. Lastly they will have a huge interest in fashion and most likely style themselves based on clothes they have seen artists wearing and clothes that are considered “indie” such as the brand American apparel or urban outfitters.

how did you attract/address your taregt AUDIENCE?
M
y original idea was that I would attract my audience with my front cover, the use of unisex colours (red, grey, black and white) and the large image of Emma sat on a chair staring directly into the camera would attract attention as the image makes the reader feel as if she is staring straight at them, additionally the image brings attention to what Emma is wearing which would immediately would attract my audience who have an interest in fashion. In conjunction with the image of Emma, my choice of sell lines on the front cover would entice the reader to pick up my magazine and purchase it so they could read its content, especially the access to this year’s reading line up because as I mentioned my target audience will also be huge lovers of festivals so this would interest them. Following my original idea to attract the audience I also wanted to attract them through my magazines layout, style and content, this leads on to why my audience would want to red my magazine. To begin with my audience would mainly want to red MFY for entertainment and informative reasons; they would be reading my magazine as a hobby or to improve their understanding and knowledge of the music industry. This being one of the reasons why I included a music update page so that my audience were able to have up to date knowledge of what is happening in the industry whilst also finding out gossip which they would be able to share with friends. The tone of my content would address mainly the female skew of my target audience as they would have an interest in celebrity gossip and finding out the latest news in the music industry. Additionally I attracted my target audience through the content of my magazine, I had subheadings such as “MTV feuds” and “gig guide”
as I believe these attract my audience as it makes them believe they are finding out new information about the music industry before anyone else. This appeals to my audience as it would make them feel as if they were up to date with the latest music information as well as allowing them to have something to share with their friends. Also the content for new music and chance to win tickets to festivals would attract my target demographic as they would want to read my magazine for the chance to win free tickets whilst also getting entertainment out of the articles which are trustworthy. Moreover the use of social media is a huge way that I intend to use to attract my target audience. In saying that my audience will have an understanding of social media, it was only obvious that I should include it within my magazine. This directly appeals to my audience as it means not only can they buy the magazine monthly but also keep up to date for free through the use of social media sites such as twitter. This would attract my target audience as they would appreciate this factor especially if they are a full time student or working adult. By including social media it also means that my audience can socially interact to create personal relationships. Being able to discuss the magazine online alongside other music lover’s means that my audience will be able to chat together and possibly build
friendships via the online sites. By incorporating social media into my magazine I have enhanced the users experience whilst also making me able to reach out to a larger demographic audience meaning more sales for my magazine. Furthermore I also decided to include a section of my magazine where readers could give their input, I created a readers review section which enables them to have direct input with my magazine if they tweet or email in their reviews. I believe that by doing this I have attracted my audience through the use of their direct input. For this exact reason it separates my magazine from other music magazines who usually only have reviews from professionals. This makes my magazine more trustworthy as readers won’t feel as if they are being lied to. To conclude the features I have included within my magazine deliberately address and attract my target audience as they would be interested in reading and sharing their input into my magazine whilst also creating personal relationships with other readers.
I
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THE PRODUCT?
n creating my final product I used a variety of hardware and software and in this process I learnt alot about them and how they worked. The main piece of software I used was Adobe InDesign as I used this to primarily design my magazine. Prior to making my magazine I had used this software to make a magazine at GCSE but it was not of the same standard as my A-level music magazine. Indeed I did already have a small understanding of the InDesign tools such as the paragraph styles so that I could change the text to the format of others, for example I could edit one sub heading then highlight that piece of text and change it to a paragraph style names “heading” and it would automatically format my other sub headings. However in using Adobe InDesign to create and develop my magazine, I followed new tutorials in order to make sure my magazine looked professional and had a strong attractive layout that adhered to the typical magazine conventions. I did this through using tools for aspects of my magazines such as making pull quotes look interesting, fitting my text around the images and having three columns for my article. Adobe InDesign was a programme that was fairly easy to use due to my previous experience with it and the help that I gained from the tutorials. Moreover InDesign is the software that most magazine companies use to create their magazine, this is one of the reasons I chose to use it myself as I believe it gave my magazine a professional stylish look that reflected my magazine style.
get a variety of high angle, low angle and interestingly positioned shots as I wanted my magazine to have a variety of images as that is what is typical for magazine shoots. I also used studio lights during my photo shoot, these allowed my photos to be lit well so that they were of the best quality.
A large piece of technology which helped me construct my magazine and made sure it was of a high standard was photo shop; I used this to edit my photos as this feature wasn’t available on InDesign. I was familiar with the basics of photo shop as I used it when creating my GCSE magazine. I used photoshop to brighten my photos and blemish out some of the flaws that my models had as this is a convention that all
from friends as they were able to access my blog themselves. Similarly another online site I used was survey monkey, this was a useful source to get feedback on as it allowed me to make questionnaires that I could send out to my audience for them to answer; at the end the results were generated into a data format so the feedback could be understood easily. Finally a piece of technology I used which helped me with the design and planning of magazine was powerpoint, although this is a basic piece of technology, I had a large amount of knowledge on how to use this due to using it for various projects since I was young. I used this to make power points on my design ideas and model ideas, so that I could look through my choices and decide which ones would suit my magazine style and make it look professional. Power point was a great piece of technology that allowed me to remain organised and create a final product that was stylish and professional.
“I USed a cannon 5 50d
digital slr camera, it took fabulous shots”
In my photo shoot I used a Cannon 5 50D Digital SLR camera, this camera took fabulous shots for my magazine that were of high quality. I decided against using a tripod so that by holding the camera it allowed me to
magazines use not just in music. I decided to only edit my photos lightly as I was happy with what the photos looked like but by editing them and making a few adjustments made them look professional and adhere to the normal magazine conventions. Moreover another technology which played a role in the construction of my product was Word-press, this is an online blogging site and helped me construct my product as this is what I did a majority of my planning on, the use of the website allowed me to view my work weekly. This also allowed me to notice what needed to be changed about my magazine whilst getting feedback
Thus I believe this highlights that I have learnt a great deal about the different of technologies I used and how they work within my magazine and its creation.
Looking back aT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FINAL PRODUCT?
A
t the beginning of our AS media course the first practical task we were challenged with was to create a school magazine. This preliminary task consisted of creating the magazine through taking our own images, creating a layout and designing a front cover and contents page. Looking back at my preliminary task and comparing it to my final product there is significant difference in the quality of both products which highlights how my media skills have improved during the course. The first task we had to complete when making our preliminary task was to take some photos. The photos I took were taken within our lesson time and consisted of fairly basic shots which made my magazine look unplanned and spontaneous. I took around 40 photos of the school and the students without any use of props or lighting. This is greatly different to my music magazine photo shoot as for my feature artist shoot I asked a group of friends to
come in to the pre booked studio and made them wear different outfits and did their makeup semiprofessional. By including a variety of looks and props enabled me to take a lot more shots than I did for the school magazine. I took about 500 photos in the studio which gave me a lot of options for my final magazine and gave it more content making it look professional. I created both my school magazine and my final magazine on InDesign. As already mentioned I had already used InDesign at GCSE so I found
appearance of my magazine I took a lot of time considering the colour scheme, I made sure they stuck to the house style and conformed to my magazine genre. I then also downloaded specific fonts from online sources so that my magazine looked attractive and different to the usual music magazine. I manipulated the text wrap tool and the paragraph styles as it made creating my magazine a lot quicker and made it look consistent throughout, unlike in my preliminary task where I didn’t use any of these tools. In regard to the layout of my magazine, there is no set structure or clear layout to my school magazine, everything seems slightly disorganized and placed with no specific reason. For example the comparison between the two contents pages is clear one is a single page and the other a double page spread. By having a double page spread portrays the general feel and professionalism of my overall magazine, my music magazine contains and looks extremely more professional and realistic when compared to my school magazine which only has a front page and contents page making it very plain and boring.
“THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT
DIFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY OF BOTH PRODUCTS” it very easy to use when creating my school magazine as I stuck to the main basic functions and styles as I created the magazine in a very small amount of time. All of the text was in the same two fonts, I made some bold to add some style. Also the colours I used were basic and only primary colours so did not stand out against the background or attract the reader’s attention. However when creating my Music magazine I stretched my InDesign knowledge and used different tools and styles as well as following tutorials to give my magazine the professional look. In regard to the
In comparing the main features of both my school magazine and music magazine it is clear that I have learnt and progressed a large amount, I have extended my skills in using the software as well as enhancing my knowledge of the key code and conventions of magazines which has proved to make my music magazine professional and appealing to my audience.
