NASHVILLE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER 1

The Nashville Community Arts Center was designed to continue the efforts to create an arts district in Nashville. The concept for the space came from the process of creating art including the following:

INSPIRATION

CREATE

DISPLAY

IDEA

PROCESS

SHARE

The center was designed to represent all three parts. Circulation spaces create an important zone for experiencing all three parts simultaneously. Visitors can see and appreciate how art is made while getting inspiration from being in the space. Adjacencies of spaces were significant, for example, gallery and studio spaces, so that people in each space can see what is going on in the other and learn about each part of the process. ** This project was done while at the University of Tennessee

individual rooms could be versatile. The entire space can also be used as a venue space when not in use. Custom display walls were designed to accommodate for this. Wheels allow them to be moved into storage spaces, and sliding vertical and horizontal panels allow for different kinds of art work to be displayed while also letting some light through the middle layer of translucent plastic.

The program for the space includes exhibition space, open studios, private studios, classrooms, a wood shop, a print making studio, dance studios and an area designated for children’s art programs.

Flexibility

of the space was very important. A large open area (pictured right) was intended for flexible gallery space that could shift depending on the work on display. Exhibits could range from a children’s art class, a professional artist’s private showing or for a temporary pin up space for a class in session. For community events the space could be cleared and used as a venue. All the furniture and walls in the space can easily move and be put away in storage rooms. A cafe with a small library (pictured far right) and areas for study and social gatherings is adjacent to the gallery space. Extra seating is also built into the central stair on the way to the studios. People using these spaces are encouraged to collaborate on their work and ideas and learn from each other. People from the community using this area just as a coffeehouse, will have an opportunity to be exposed to artists and hear about works in progress.

Section detail

Footprint of custom gallery wall

Custom gallery walls were designed to aid in the flexibility and mobility of spaces.

The piece has caster wheels so it can be easily moved and each side of the wall has fabric wrapped pin up board. One is vertical and the other is horizontal and can slide right to left or up and down. This movement and variance in size helps accommodate for different sized art pieces as well as considering the size of the artist. A child could proudly pin her own piece of art work up on the wall within her reach. The middle layer is translucent acrylic so that natural light can still pass through the space.

design was a group project, which began with research about time and movement. It was conducted by observing everyday activities and nature, then recording it and creating videos and animations. The series of movies and images collected inspired the conceptual idea for the project. The shell of the building was provided to the group and the responsibilities were divided among group members in addition to extensive collaborative work on the entire plan. The concept was to create a CHANNEL in the hotel that would direct users pace, experience and destination; In essence regulate the time and movement of the guests. The channel changed from having energy like a hub of a city, to the pace of suburban areas and then rural areas.

Floor plan

The three meal restaurant was inspired by a fast pace urban environment. The channel goes through the restaurant and encouraages movement through the space. It moves from the interior to the exterior balconies creating interesting spaces where people can stand or sit interes and look in or look out of the restaurant. People watching op opportunities are created which adds to the experience and the energy of the pathway.

was built in 1898 and is a significant piece of architecture in Tennessee history. In it’s prime, it served as an overall factory, now it sits in ruin and suffers from extreme neglect. The building has been classified by Knox Heritage, a local historic preservation group, as one of Knoxville’s top ten fragile buildings. This project was a proposal for revamping the three story building with different businesses to bring it back to life. The proposed tenants of the space were Petsafe, a dog grooming and day care facility, Knox Heritage, the preservation group, and Glowing Body, a yoga studio. The concept of the interior of the space is based on the contrast of the buildings current state of negligence to the nurturing nature of each of the proposed tenants. Each business’s space is designed so the tenants can best nurture the specific area they specialized in-- pets, local history and health.

The new Petsafe location was proposed to be on the first floor of the Cal Johnson building in Knoxville. A local historic preservation office and yoga studio were also designed for the other floors of this building. The concept of the this space was inspired by the contrast of the proposed tenants to the current state of the building. The focus therefore was taking care of pets as well as the employees working with the pets. The space created was both a safe and playful environment for both human and canine. Custom dog grooming stations were designed for more comfort and a less stressful environment for the dogs while simultaneously easing the groomers work and keeping the facility more organized as they do their job.

cial interaction to promote comfortable spaces to relax and meet with people in addition to the actual studio spaces where exercise and relaxation was to take place. In creating spaces for socializing, drinking tea and serving healthy snacks, there is a place and a time for relationships with teachers and other students to grow. Rushing to a yoga class to just to leave as soon as it is over is not the point. Focusing on the time before and after is just as important as the class itself. Because of that, special attention was also given to the locker rooms so there was enough room to comfortably get ready as well as have a safe place for one’s belongings.

Open ceilings in many of the spaces required close coordination with mechanical, electrical and plumbing consultants to ensure that ceiling heights and design intents were maintained. Standard and custom casework was required through out the space. Classrooms had custom cubbies for the different age groups in addition to the standard upper and base cabinets for storage and supplies.

(4

Glazing film patterns were used outside of the group fit classes on the gym level. Because a running track ran adjacent to these areas, a little bit of privacy was desired in addition to an engaging pattern for those running by.

The prefunction area outside of the gymnasium, tied the floors together that were for children specifically to the areas that were for the general public or the whole church body. Shapes and patterns were still used but more subdued colors replaced the vibrant accents on other floors.

Reception desk at entryway of church

Check-in desks and reception desks were designed to attract attention as well as function practically for those approaching both sides as a visitor and employee. On children’s levels, these desks have pops of color to go with the surrounding environment (pictured on the far right). On levels that are for the general public, more neutral and sophisticated colors were selected (pictured right).

Glazing films were also used outside of classrooms to reduce distraction from activity in the hallways. For safety reasons, however, visibility into the classrooms needed to be preserved. The whimsical interpretation of the trees is childlike while remaining sophisticated enough to be adjacent to the women’s wing of the facility. Color changing LEDs above the trees add to the energy of the space as well as making it an even more interesting space for the adults in addition to the children. The color changing tree canopies are in the waiting areas of the outpatient portion and the ER waiting room and are a great distraction for children who might be scared or need some entertainment while waiting.

BAPTIST MEMPHIS PEDIATRICS

Interior Design 472 Spring 2012

The canopy motif continues from the ceilings onto the walls of the corridors with more trees, grass, birds and butterflies. In addition to this motif through out hallways, donor art was contributed and needed to be coordinated at these locations so neither would interfere with the other. The bright accent colors combined with the vibrant donor photography makes the walk down the corridor feel more like a journey to a different place.

In the emergency room corridors, different colored sheet vinyl circles created a floor pattern that is playful and introduces bright pops of color to the emergency room floors as well as way finding toward specific rooms. The reception desk (pictured right) welcomes people immediately upon entrance into the ER and introduces one of the trees which continues through out the facility. 69 ) 69 '

This furniture piece was designed to create a multifunctional table to accommodate the many different ways people may interact with a simple coffee table: sitting on the floor or couch, resting feet on it, eating and drinking on it, working or storing things on it.

FURNITURE DESIGN

Sketches, physical models and digital models show the design ideas and first iterations while exploring material and color options.

21

Pushing the limits of standard height for seating and coffee tables, the end result has an almost 2’-0” high table surface that one can sit on the floor to use, or the bench that fits inside of the table or a standard seat height and more comfortable access the table surface. Because of the parallelogram shape, another surface can be used as a work surface when the table is turned on one end. This orientation allows a place to rest one’s feet and still store items in it.

This built-in furniture piece

STUDY ABROAD

was designed after visiting the Helsinki Helsinkki Seafarer’s centre designed by Ark House architects in Helsinki. The assignment was to design a piece o off built in furniture for an information center about the th he building and the architects. The design of the piece is derived from the plan of the structure and intended d to create a space for the people staying there to sit aand nd read or quickly browse for a brochure to read and d take it with them when they go back to sea. Because the center is a haven for those at sea, the kiosk creates an opportunity for the guests to learn more about the spaces and those that designed it to meet their needs needs.

26

Composition, proportion and balance were studied through drawing classes and model building in first year studio. Above is a scale model of a visitor’s center designed for and inspired by the Villa Rotunda in Vicenza, Italy. Pictured right is a composition done with pencil of the torchbearer statue on the University of Tennessee’s campus. In emphasizing only a portion of the statue a balance of positve and negative space was achieved and focused on the effects of light and shadow.
