Drawing isn't just copying another picture. It's about ideas. It's about you. Trying things out. Drawing things out. Visualising ideas. Expressing emotions. There are lots of ways to get your thoughts, feelings, and stories on a page.

David Shrigley

There's a whole history of “pictorial story telling and language. Here's a segment of an Ancient Egyptian mural, dated 1555-1350 BC, depicting the process of farming. Despite this difference in language and time, the use of images makes it understandable.

WRIT ING

!!!

If written word is the easiest method of expression to you... then why not? There are plenty of zines dedicated to stories, articles / journalism, reviews, rants, diaries, experimental pieces, poems or even information pamphlets...

WHAT ELSE???

Chris Ware's Building Stories – Is a story about the relationships, interactions and histories of various inhabitants of a house. Rather then produce a standard book format, he spread the work over a range of media, all packaged in a box. (A copy was recently on display at the V&A )

Various Artists, Fluxkits, 1964

In the sixties, a group of artists called Fluxus made boxes of publications and objects as a way of escaping the need for the gallery. They wanted to open new possibilities for art experiences. They also wanted to create packages that would include the user in the creative act. As well as the visual, they explored taste, smell and touch.

As the resources (paper, card, scissors, pencils and glue) are already avaliable in your stock cupboard, there's no added / extra expenses to your normal budget!

SHAR E A ND SHOW OF F ! !!

Zines and Zine Fairs allow people to create their own products, create their own events, perhaps even create their own audience and meet people who do the same. They're often associated with subcultures and “underground” interests because they're a useful tool for giving a voice to what “popular” media or information channels might ignore.

Connect Collaborate Celebrate

Why not hold a zine fair in your schools hall? Give pupils stalls to share and then let them give out and exchange what they've made! Or perhaps put together an after school "self publishing" club? How about monthly competitions for zines made at home, the winner gets their item photocopied for their class?

Why not post them abroad?

or email / host the design to let others print it themselves!!!
