Join a community of young artists and designers for a one-month intensive where you can elevate your skills and expand your portfolio. Choose one of 10 studio disciplines for in-depth study as you explore contemporary art + design. Showcase your final work in a student-curated exhibition in a public gallery.
In our two-week Junior Art Intensive, creative youth aged 13-15 explore 2D and 3D art-making. Working with professional art instructors in a focused workshop environment, students will complete a variety of projects in drawing, painting, print media and soft sculpture. The program includes an exploration of the creative process and an exhibition of student work.

COMMUNICATION DESIGN CERTIFICATE Delivered by BCIT and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, the Communication Design Certicate is a one-year, full-time program that provides students with a solid foundation in communication design theory as well as graphic design skills in the Adobe Creative Cloud. This career-focused program prepares graduates for a variety of roles in graphic design, advertising and marketing.

INTERACTION DESIGN CERTIFICATE Our Interaction Design Certificate is a six-month, full-time program that brings together user experience and design principles. Students develop skills in areas from web design to coding to motion graphics as they produce both web and mobile-based applications. Graduates exit the program with a professional-level portfolio and a range of in-demand skills. This program focuses on specific skills required for a range of positions within interaction design.

URBAN CARTOGRAPHY
Learn to critically read and record the underlying geometry, overlapping histories and multiple agendas of the city through mapping, measuring and sketching. Using architectural and cartographic tools and techniques, you will examine the metrics behind what makes neighbourhoods different, how we move through the city and how the built environment has taken shape. This beginner course introduces urban inhabitants to ways of reading and understanding the city. This course focuses on studying the techniques used by Edgar Degas, Vincent Van Gogh, Käthe Kollwitz, Lucian Freud and others to make drawings using a variety of mediums including graphite pencil, pen and ink, charcoal and soft pastel. Students will be taught the drawing approaches used by these artists, focusing on line, tone and composition and apply these techniques to produce their own unique drawings. Through drawing from direct observation, students will make their own still life, portrait and landscape drawings. Class work includes drawing directly from the model. This course provides an in-depth study of the head for portraiture. THE MAGIC OF STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

Composition affects both the visual impact and message of an image or photograph. The spatial relationships within an image and what a photographer includes or omits from the frame influence how work is interpreted and received. In this course, students examine the various aspects of composition. Through lectures, assignments, self-directed projects and critiques, student explore line, shape, colour, texture, depth of field, and surface. Note: This course does not include darkroom or computer lab access.
The street has been a subject of interest since the birth of photography. From Eugene Atget and Henri CartierBresson to Robert Frank and Diane Arbus, the camera became the lens through which photographers began to observe and document everyday life. In this course, you will walk the streets to discover ever-changing inspiration, while learning important considerations for composition, lighting and subject matter through lectures and hands-on assignments. Adobe Lightroom is an industry-standard program that allows photographers to manage and edit their work. Learn how to make your workflow more efficient and discover how Lightroom can save you time editing and exporting individual and multiple images. Using Lightroom and Photoshop, students will upload, edit, process and export their digital photographs while learning about presets, outputs and other tools that are invaluable to professional photographers. Note: Students can work on their own laptops if they have Lightroom and Photoshop installed.

This course is designed for those beginning to explore photography using a digital camera or for those wanting to add digital techniques to their current photographic practice. While focusing on the specific nature of digital photography, you will also be exposed to larger considerations of composition, lighting and framing. Additionally, you will learn basic image editing and printing techniques. The course is organized around a series of projects, but also offers you the opportunity to work on your independent projects. CONTEMPORARY PORTRAITURE
The ability to create a compelling portrait is an important skill for any photographer. This practical and theoretical introduction to photographic portraiture is an opportunity for any student wanting to expand their photographic portrait style and techniques. Exploring the history and evolution of photographic portraiture and the practical techniques used for producing a contemporary portrait, this course will include the use of natural and studio lighting and working with live models, as well as photographing your own subjects. This course is for both analog and digital photographers. This course does not include darkroom access.

Building on CEPH 250 Introduction to Digital Photography, you will apply your technical skills towards creating contemporary artistic projects and developing your understanding of contemporary photographic practices and methods of display. THE ART OF ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY
In this course you will learn introductory techniques for architectural photography for both interior and exterior condition. From lighting and framing, to preparing and setting up for the shoot, this course will balance demonstrations with hand-on assignments and location shoots. This course is ideal for someone who may want to consider commercial photography options such as real-estate or interior design, or someone who wants to better expand their creative vocabulary towards their own independent work.

PRINT MEDIA INTRODUCTION TO SCREEN PRINTING
Screen-printing techniques provide artists with a simple method of applying their images and ideas to a wide variety of materials and surfaces. Expand your image-making options by learning the basics of screen-printing to print your hand-drawn and photographic images onto paper and alternative surfaces. Lessons in concept development, screen and surface preparation, registration and preservation culminate in learning how to establish a studio practice for continued art production and explorations.

TEXTILE PRINTING I
TEXTILE PRINTING II
Textile printing is the application of colour in definite patterns or designs to fabrics. You will practice a number of methods for printing on fabrics, including block printing and screenprinting. Lessons in concepts and creative approaches, as well as technical practices such as basic dyeing and fabric painting, will lead towards establishing a home practice set-up for fabric printing. You will learn about various types of dyes and fabric pigments. Paint techniques and cloth types appropriate to each method used will be demonstrated.

Painterly printmaking without a press is possible with some forms of monotype printmaking. Explore the possibilities of the lift print, and water-based ink monotypes. SCULPTURE SMALL-SCALE MODELING
Explore the fundamental techniques of modeling in this hands-on studio course. Using Plastalina and clay, you will be introduced to the additive process of modeling, where the basic shape is blocked out and the surface form is built up gradually over the entire sculpture. Through demonstrations, exercises and projects, you will learn how to create small-scale sculpture and relief sculpture using the basic sculptural elements of mass, space, plane, line, scale, movement and texture. Techniques and skills learned will appeal to animators, sculptors, potters, product designers and many others. Where are the courses held?
All Continuing Studies courses in Summer 2017 will be held on our Granville Island campus. Our new campus on Great Northern Way will open in Fall 2017.
Where can I buy supplies, and how much will they cost?
Most Continuing Studies courses require that students purchase supplies. A list of required and recommended items is provided with your confirmation of registration in each course. Some supplies are available at a discounted rate for Continuing Studies students from Opus Framing & Art Supplies on Granville Island and Petrov Arts & Crafts in North Vancouver. You must present your course registration confirmation/receipt to receive your discount. In general, students should expect to spend between $50-$200 on supplies for each course.
Am I eligible for a discount on courses?
Do Continuing Studies courses count toward university degrees at Emily Carr? Continuing Studies general program courses do not ladder into the University’s credit programs. Communication Design Certificate graduates can now receive transfer credits. See essentials.ecuad.ca for more information.

REGISTRATION POLICIES + GENERAL INFORMATION We strongly recommend students register early as class sizes are limited and courses do fill up. Registration in courses is offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Unless otherwise indicated, students in Continuing Studies (CS) courses must be at least 18 years old by the course start date. Please note that the policies listed in this calendar apply to individual courses and workshops only. For policies on our other programs, please see essentials.ecuad.ca, teens.ecuad.ca and ecuad.ca/cs.
Registration Deadlines
You are encouraged to register early whenever possible, but registrations may be accepted up to one day prior to the first day of the course provided space is available. Students who do not appear on the instructor’s course list will not be permitted to attend. Please note that no registrations are accepted after a course has started.
Fees
Your tuition fees cover the cost of the course and, in some cases, materials provided by the instructor. However, most courses require students to purchase additional materials. Fees are payable at the time of registration. Payment can be made through cash, debit and credit. Failure to make payment within 24 hours of registration will result in being removed from your course(s).

Many Continuing Studies courses are open to students with different backgrounds and levels of experience. However, we also offer advanced courses for more experienced students. If a course requires a prerequisite course or its equivalent, we highly recommend that you take the prerequisite course prior to taking the
advanced course. Please note: If you are not at the level required for the course, Continuing Studies reserves the right to move you to a course more suitable to your skill level.
Language Requirements
All courses are taught in English. Students whose first language is not English should note that they are required to be proficient in written and spoken English and be able to participate in group discussions and presentations in English. As a guideline, we would expect you to have an IELTS score of 4.5 for studio courses and 6.0 for lecture courses. Please note: If you are not at an appropriate language level, Continuing Studies reserves the right to move you to a course more suitable to your skill level.
Registration Statement
When you register online, you will automatically receive a “Registration Confirmation + Materials List” email with links to your course timetable, room location and materials list online. If you do not receive an email, please make sure your current email address is listed on your account and then contact the CS office. If you register in person, by phone or by fax, you will receive an email with your registration statement within 24 hours. Please note: We no longer send registration statements by mail.
Wait Lists
If a course is full, contact the CS office to be added to a wait list. If a seat opens up in the course, you will be contacted by the CS office to be enrolled in the course. There is no cost to be added to the wait list and you are under no obligation to register if a space becomes available. Students on wait lists cannot attend classes.
Withdrawal and Refund Policy
No refund will be given if notification of withdrawal is received less than seven full calendar days before the start of the course. Exceptions are only considered as they pertain to extenuating circumstances on an individual basis. In such cases, a written request for refund, accompanied by appropriate documentation from a third party (e.g. subpoena), must be submitted. A refund or a tuition voucher, minus an administrative charge of $35 per course, will be issued if notification of withdrawal is received more than seven full calendar
days prior to the course start date. Students may withdraw from a course by phone, fax, or email. Under no circumstances will refunds be granted for requests received after the end of a course or workshop. Course transfers or special requests can also not be accommodated after a course finishes.
Course Transfer Policy
No transfers of fees will be granted if notification of transfer is received less than seven full calendar days before the start of the course. A transfer of fees, minus an administrative charge of $35, will be issued if the request for transfer is received more than seven full calendar days prior to the start date of the course you wish to transfer out of. You must pay any additional fees at the time of transfer. You may transfer from one course to another by phone, fax or email.
Cancellations
We reserve the right to cancel a course up to five calendar days prior to the course start date if there is not sufficient registration in a course. If a course is cancelled by Continuing Studies for any reason, a full refund will be processed and sent automatically to all registrants. In the event of a cancellation, CS can transfer you into a different course or provide a tuition voucher in lieu of a refund upon request. Course cancellations will be announced to each student by email. Please ensure that your email is on le and up to date.
Emergency Closures
In the event of an emergency closure due to poor weather conditions, information will be posted on the Emily Carr website (ecuad.ca) as soon as a decision is made to close.
Postponement of Courses
In the event that a course needs to be cancelled or postponed due to instructor illness, unscheduled school closure or other unexpected event, you will be notified by email.
Waiver
Emily Carr accepts no responsibility in the event any class, course of instruction, seminar, or workshop is either cancelled or not completed as a result of strikes, lockouts, fire, natural disasters or any other cause beyond the control of the University. Emily Carr reserves the right to change or amend its programs, instructors, fee structure, schedule and regulations at any time from those published in this catalogue.

Emily Carr Library
The library is located on the ground floor of the South Building, Granville Island campus. The library collection is composed of print resources including books, journals, and exhibition catalogues; a broad range of electronic resources; slide and digital images; films, videos and DVDs; sound effects; artists’ books; the University’s archives; and a menu collection. Some items may be ‘On Reserve’ for specific courses. Library collections are accessible in-house to all students, faculty and the public. Students registered in Continuing Studies courses and programs are entitled to a free Community Borrower card, which means that they can borrow up to 15 books, graphic novels, or Exhibition Catalogues. The Concourse Gallery
The Concourse Gallery is the main showcase for work done within the curriculum at Emily Carr. It has featured shows by degree students, CS students, faculty, staff and visitors involved in generating new ways of learning. CS organizes many shows that pertain to our programming in the summer semester, and we invite you to visit and be inspired.
The Charles H. Scott Gallery
The Charles H. Scott Gallery is an integral part of Emily Carr. Since it opened in 1980, the Gallery has played a significant role locally and provincially. The Gallery regularly presents exciting and varied exhibitions of art, design, and architecture by acclaimed regional, national, and international artists and designers. READ at The Charles H. Scott Gallery
READ is an ongoing project of the Charles H. Scott Gallery developed to promote the continued availability of artist monographs, artist books, multiples, exhibition catalogues, and critical theory. e focus is primarily on contemporary artists and contemporary art discourse. READ also carries books on lm, design, and architecture and has a select collection of magazines and journals. READ sells all Emily Carr University’s course textbooks.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE Jeanne Krabbendam Painting Instructor
In 2016, Continuing Studies instructor Jeanne Krabbendam was recognized by the British Columbia Art Teachers’ Association (BCATA) with the Post-Secondary Award for Excellence in the teaching of Visual Arts for her work in the community and at Emily Carr University. “To see people find their own way of putting down paint, using colour, discovering their own voice — it’s very rewarding,” says Jeanne, who has taught at Emily Carr University for 11 years.

CEPN 365 Open Studio Layering Techniques, is designed for experienced artists with a goal in mind.

“The Open Studio is for motivated students,” says Jeanne. “It’s very self-directed.”
Students may be working on a portfolio for undergraduate admission or building a series of work for a gallery showing. “We analyse the work but we also leave time for creation,” she says. In introductory courses, such as CEPN 165 The Built Surface and CEPN 190 Anything But the Brush, Jeanne encourages students to take risks and not to fear mistakes. “Anything But the Brush is a great course for anyone intimidated by working in large-scale,” she says. “It really opens people up and encourages them to work with completely different tools.” In the classroom, Jeanne draws frequently on her own experiences, including techniques she’s developed. She’s seen students from her CS courses go on to undergraduate or master’s degrees at Emily Carr or find their place in Vancouver’s art community. “A real community develops between students,” she says. “They challenge each other and sometimes stay in touch after the course, even exhibiting work together.” Outside of Emily Carr, Jeanne volunteers her art education skills at Coast Mental Health and leads small groups of students on personal painting tours by boat through her native Holland.

Join a community of young artists and designers for a one-month intensive where you can elevate your skills and expand your portfolio. Choose one of 10 studio disciplines for in-depth study as you explore contemporary art + design. Showcase your final work in a student-curated exhibition in a public gallery.
In our two-week Junior Art Intensive, creative youth aged 13-15 explore 2D and 3D art-making. Working with professional art instructors in a focused workshop environment, students will complete a variety of projects in drawing, painting, print media and soft sculpture. The program includes an exploration of the creative process and an exhibition of student work.
