I’ve always admired Chanel because it symbolizes class and powerful women. It is synonymous with longevity and sophistication.
I was inspired by the spring 2015 campaign because of the juxtaposition. Gisele was dressed in beautiful, classic garments, but was not wearing any shoes and walking around in Paris. I wanted to convey an image that is natural and beautiful, but not expected. The characteristics of Chanel, in general, relate back to me and I believe a lot of women because everyone wants to feel sophisticated and beautiful. Chanel is a symbol of class and I am really fond of that. When looking at the Chanel campaign, I instantly thought River Street. Obviously there some dead giveaways that the original photos were shot in Paris, but I knew I could manipulate River Street into looking similar. When it came to taking photos, I wanted all horizontal shots and I wanted the model to be just on half of the shot. There was a large attention to backgrounds and I wanted to have an asymmetrically balanced photo because this further plays on the juxtaposition. To me, the mood in these photos is mysterious. You see a naturally beautiful girl in nice clothes, but she has no shoes on. You can’t help but think: where is she going? What is she doing? It’s almost as if you are following her through these photos and trying to find her destination. River Street was busy and in some shots you see people looking at the model in either a confused or interested manner. I like that this happens because it draws, even more, attention to this girl and what she is doing. This project enhanced my skills in several ways. Firstly, it has enhanced my Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign skills. Continually having to make process books has not only made me feel very comfortable in InDesign but has helped me get better at page layouts. The project was very fast-paced, which made it feel like a real-life situation. I had to find photographers and models and act as professional as possible. My communication and organizations skills have definitely benefited from this project. I have never asked a photographer to shoot in the dark, so making sure I had a great photographer was important. In general, I am glad that I got to have this experience because it makes me feel more comfortable being in control.

S TAT E M E N T Erik Madigan Heck shot a series for Harper’s Bazaar UK and his Fendi shot completely grabbed my attention. The photo was minimalistic and simple, but the rich contrast is what made the shot so spectacular. For this shoot, I do not really have an underlying message, but instead create an artistic statement. Basically, to demonstrate that you can create a powerful image while being simple. This relates back to me because my design and overall aesthetic is simple and sophisticated with an attention to detail. Like the inspiration photo, I used a limited color palette to make a big statement. The high saturation has a successful contrast because they don’t fight with one another, but complement each other. In some photos the main subject is centered, but mostly the model is on either side of the composition. I chose to do this, so there would be a lot of the blue background in the photo. In a lot of Fendi ads, the logo is smaller and in one of the corners. I did that here because I didn’t want to take away from the photo. This project enhanced my skills in several ways. Acne Studios is known for its edgy and avant-garde fashion. I’ve always been attracted to their clothes and advertisements because they are minimal and clean, but still pack a punch. For my photos, I wanted shoot men, but in a way that wasn’t manly. In fashion, “gender-bending” has become very popular and is the inspiration of many ads and collections and I wanted to tap into that. A lot of Acne’s models are very androgynous, so I knew it would match their aesthetics and views. I was specifically inspired by the men’s Fall/Winter 2015 campaign because or the grungy and edgy vibe. The men were in twisted positions, but still had a softness to them. Overall, I wanted to show that you can mix feminine and masculine qualities and defy beauty standards. As I mentioned before, I wanted the overall design to be clean and minimal, so we shot in the studio. I loved how there was a simple, white background, but an emphasis on the shadows. Minimal, but an attention to detail is something I truly admire. For most shots, I had my model centered and covering most of the photo, but where you can still see the shadows. The models body language is relaxed and calm, but edgy. I used soft colors like pastels because it looked nice with the grundy hair and distorted positions, thus showing the blending between the two sexes. Like real Acne Studio ads, I placed the logo in the middle. Some are white and others black depending on the coloring of the clothing, but I am more inclined to the white because it looks cleaner and more minimal. This project enhanced my skills in several ways. Firstly, it has enhanced my Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign skills. My communication and organizations skills have definitely benefited from this project. This one specifically enhanced my styling abilities. It was hard to find clothes and style this because of my access to clothes. I had to do a lot of searching and step outside my comfort zone a little, but it was completely worth it because it is my favorite out of all three.
