WELCOME

Welcome to the 5th edition of Margaret River Region Open Studios and our rich crucible of creativity. For two weeks of the year the focus of the region turns to art as alongside the wineries and behind the beaches, a multitude of artists open their studios ready to greet you. Its an opportunity to talk with them, learn secrets, explore new techniques, share ideas, admire art, and maybe even own a piece. Frequent visitors will notice a few changes designed to enhance the event experience and its presentation. A big bold new format for the guide giving bigger images for the artists, clearer maps, easier to read copy plus a smart new logo. This is our biggest ever event with 130 artists and it also marks the retirement of our founding chair Bill Castleden. A big thanks goes to Bill, he’s a true giant of Open Studios and our continued success will only be there because we stand on his shoulders. A big thank you also goes to Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries for being platinum sponsors, the event would not have been possible without their support. Plus a big thanks to all our other sponsors, advertisers, volunteers and of course our tireless board. So set the Sat Nav, fire up Google Maps, and head out on an exhilarating journey into art. HOW TO ‘DO’ OPEN STUDIOS Decide who you will visit – Flick through this Guide and identify which artists you like the look of.

Mark these studios and refer to the map to plan your journey. For additional information and more images, refer to the artist profile on our website.

Plan your trip – We cover a large area so planning ahead is essential. Use Sat Nav or Google Maps This project has been funded by the West Australian Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries

to locate studios and for ‘hard to find’ locations check our website or call the artist. Then layout a route to follow.

Be a great visitor – Be respectful and thank the artist for opening their space for the event. Supervise your children and keep them with you while you visit. Always contact the artist first if you would like to bring a dog onto their property.

What to ask an Artist? – Our artists welcome your interest in their work. Below are some great

conversation starters. Art News published a guide on “How to talk to an Artist’ you can find it at www.artnews.com/2005/06/01/how-to-talk-to-an-artist.

What is their process? – How do they make their work? What is in their Artist’s Statement? – This details what the work is about. What is their background and training? – Their area of study or perhaps are they self

taught – this background can give you great understanding about the artist and the work they do. Artists have diverse backgrounds and come to their practice for many different reasons. Please remember that our event celebrates creativity at all its stages. Some of our artists are emerging and others are well established. This diversity is the strength of our unique event and promises countless discoveries for our visitors.

How many visits can I make? – Many visitors find that 5-7 studios in a day allows them time to chat, drive and picnic, some of our locations are open during later time slots, so plan your trip respecting the open times shown. As this is a driving based event remember to plan your trip and drive safely.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PATRONS As the founding Patrons, some 5 years ago, of the initial Margaret River Region Open Studios, we are delighted with the success the event has achieved. It started as a creative idea, something aimed at enthusing the artistic community of Margaret River. That and more it has certainly achieved. Congratulations go to our foundation Chairman, Bill Castleden, as he exits from his leading role as the founder of the largest Open Studios event in Australia. Bill has shown outstanding leadership as he hands the mantel on to Jim Davies. This year we have a record number of participants, an exciting programme and some new venues, all of which is sure to once more boost the popularity of the event. It is amazing what the drive, creativity and energy of a few can create, in a short period of time, to benefit the residents, artists and visitors to a small community. To you Bill, and your dedicated team of board members you have the admiration of the entire community, along with the many visitors to the district, in creating and driving such a successful venture in our small community. To the incoming Chairman and board, we wish you continued success in taking this wonderful venture forward. We look forward to a wonderful OPEN STUDIOS event in 2018 that enhances our community, the arts and our many visitors. Tricia and Denis Horgan

The sense of distance in my work emanates from living in remote areas under canvas for many months of the year. Notes I scribble in my journal as we negotiate tracks often give me the most inspiration. You are very welcome to visit my studio.

In works over a size range, I continue to respond to seasonal changes in nature.

Beginning in 2004, Nalda has continued exploring the beauty of glass bead making (otherwise known as ‘lampworking’). Come and see how glass rods are melted and transformed into beads destined for her eclectic range of jewellery.

I always enjoyed being creative but only found the time to actively pursue art, when I relocated to Busselton ten years ago. During a recent Illustration course I discovered the love for creating detailed black and white pencil drawings as well as simplified ink sketches using mainly animals as my subjects.

Award winning, self taught contemporary artist from Germany. Helga uses rhythm and energy, bringing life to unique and eye capturing paintings. Ranging from mysterious otherworldly creations to cheerful celebrations of life. Come say hello to Helga!

Sally creates contemporary functional ceramics with a considered sense of form and proportion. Her work expresses calmness, joy and simplicity, and seeks to communicate beauty and authenticity. Stay for a chai in the studio garden.

Wanda’s award winning work is recognisable by her capture of shadows and confident use of colour. Inspired by the play of light, pattern and form of shadow, Wanda brings landscapes, foliage and still life arrangements to life.

With a love for nature, I create art. This year I have had a particular focus on the impact of plastics in the environment and how many species now live with it everyday, this is incorporated within my animal and landscape paintings. Come and enjoy!

Capturing the landscape in various mediums is a continuing journey with tree and forestscapes being a major part of my art practice. I also like to experiment using texture and playing around with Collagraphs.

The investigation into family history has continued to weave through my work. Connections with family, our place in the world and the similarities to the creatures we share it with. Experimentation with various mediums keeps me investigating.

My focus as a painter is primarily the representation of either personal objects or ones that evoke a strong connection for me through shape, colour or form. Ceramics and old china are common elements in my work representing past and present. Come and visit me in my cosy studio in my old wooden farmhouse.

Living near the ocean, beach walking is part of my daily routine. Here exists an environment that is never static. The long view of sunrise and sunset contrasts with the tideline where collected fragments of marine life become the basis for mark making on my ceramic forms.

My current body of work continues to be inspired by the beauty and biodiversity of coral reefs globally. Ongoing degradation and pollution threaten these amazing ecosystems. I am creating three dimensional aluminium works depicting their beauty and their degradation.

This year I have included some painting inspired by a trip to Vietnam along with my south west beaches and interiors. Art has been a part of my life for so long. I also sculpt in soap stone which takes many hours to complete one sculpture.

I feel constantly called to reach deeper into soul and spirit to paint portraits and figurative works which awaken and enliven others. My body of work explores the element of ‘the muse’ within other artists, musicians and notable figures in history.

The work represents the disciplines of watercolours gouaches and oils past and more recent, large and small which make up an overview of how I go about painting, with work from Europe which contrasts with my main subject of Australian landscape.

Love of country inspires my work, which I’ve created in various media. Subjects vary from landscapes of the North West to seascapes of the South West. My most recent works are native bird watercolours. Welcome to my studio in our bush garden.

My figurative sculptures are hand built ceramic pieces, as are my unique birdbaths. All pieces are made onsite and are suitable for indoor or outdoor display.

I have an innate desire to create. I love to explore, to play and see what comes. This body of work is a diverse selection of pieces from each of the series I have created to give viewers an insight into my design and creative process.

Peter will enjoy talking about quirky drawings and art/science projects. (peterlittle.com) CAN YOU HELP? He is keen to learn YOUR VIEWS on the role art plays in understanding the environment. Young and old welcome.

Multi-layered structures alchemised via sustained contemplation within each painting are activated with powerful codices through a consistent deepening commitment to authenticity. This allows the audience to expand into the experience inviting intimacy and transparency.

My paintings are created in an expressionistic style. Approaching a blank canvas without prior idea as to what I will design allows a free flow of emotion and creation. Each artwork is composed using layers of acrylic paint, building the paint up to create a symphony of colour with brushwork.

In residence at Jahroc, David Giles will be presenting and working on his “Solace” series of paintings which highlight a sense of light and spirituality and draw on both contemporary colour field painting and the romantic landscape tradition.

Laurie is primarily a surrealist with a love of irony and social observation. The outcomes of these observations are up to the viewer. Laurie’s work is held in public and private collections both in Australia and overseas, and his paintings can be viewed at the Clayhouse Gallery Margaret River and Boranup Gallery.

Creating with stitch is my passion. Stitching on fabrics, my photos or etched prints. Inspired by banksia and grass trees, labyrinths and mazes. Help me create digital designs during Open Studios which can be stitched into cushions while you watch.

A celebration of colour, flow, harmony and sometimes symmetry, through passion and imagination. A desire to create happiness and light to all who view.

Penny’s creative process interprets impressions of beauty and the study of light within the natural environment and also reflect an emotional response to the oceanic landscape, flora, and forest.

Watercolour and drawings will form the main portion of the works on display. New portraits of WA birds and local landscapes will be on display as well as a number of limited edition prints.

Chloe Wilder is a reprehensible human person. She has prepared a series of oil portraits for you to look at and she will probably say something inappropriate while you’re there.

My love of the ocean has found its way to my new art studio. Finding colour on a pallet and seeing a picture unfold is a wonderful surprise to me. I am constantly amazed at how a picture emerges through patience, bravery and boldness of paint.

Finding the “point de fuite.”

Influenced by my grandmother – a keen gardener, plant lover and painter of wildflowers – I have created a collection of botanical watercolours of both exotic and native plants of this area.

Jonathon explores neo-liberalism in the emergent postmodernist humanism of today’s cultural landscape. In this context nature is not revealed by observational determinism, but constructed in the consciousness of the observer. Therefore anything goes, ha.

Emily’s work is a stunning collusion of mind and observation, deep, spiritual and soulful, it draws the observer into a complex mystery that is the essence of nature and life. T: 0407 199 796 www.emilyjacksonart.com.au

Skye is inspired by nature. She hopes people reconnect with the wonder and beauty of this fragile planet, through her work. Skye is also a big fan of colour.

Originally from Italy, I moved to Margaret River to pursue my passion for painting. Largely self taught, I paint in both watercolour and oils, with musicians and dancers the primary focus of my current body of work.

Inspiration comes from Margaret River’s beautiful forests and seascapes. Olivia studied drawing, painting and design at Perth Art School in the early 1970s. Later in life she qualified as a primary school teacher after attending Murdoch University in Perth and spent many years teaching in schools throughout W.A.

As a well known printmaker Leon has explored the medium with particular focus on etching and collagraph. His delight in the medium is evident in the wide body of work he has produced and the ongoing experimental nature of extending the technical parameters. Woven tight with visual images, rich in humour and sentiment.

Scott 84 Peter Painting/Printmaking/Drawing

Coad’s muted and intense works delve deeper into subconscious thought and uncover an unhindered engagement with the inner-self. Coad’s figures engage with outer situations, rather than with the viewer.

I am constantly inspired by the natural beauty of my surroundings and my art reflects this love of nature, expressed with the use of vibrant colours. I paint what I see and feel at any particular time in a spontaneous and experimental approach.

Award winning artist Peter Scott exhibits at his Studio Gallery, Margaret River Studio of Fine Art. He has developed a style showing influences of the Impressionists and his inspiration comes from subjects that surround him. Using different lights, a variety of mediums and strong colour, Peter captures the ever changing ambience and atmosphere that permeate this wonderful region.

Gerry Reilly’s hot glass practice combines dynamic sculptural commissions, funky lighting, graceful vases and platters, irresistible drink-ware, tableware and collectables; buzz in to $50 Blow Your Own Bauble or book ahead for a 1 hour Hot Glass Experience for 1-2 people

A ‘love of lines’ apparent in her vineyard work and also appearing very significantly in her minimalistic style of life drawing, evokes emotion. Represented by Jahroc Galleries.

Stephen is a proudly original modernist and strives to produce a range of works that are both original and relevant and believes great art arrives through the struggle to achieve technical uniqueness.

My work consists mostly of realistic portraiture. Presently the Studio is concerned with life drawing of the human form using line drawing, pastels and paints. My art has been awarded both locally and nationally.

I love working with clay, colour and texture to produce items that are decorative, fun and functional. I do ceramic sculpture classes with Sue Sowerby and produce my pottery at home. I take inspiration from nature and the birds around me.

An emerging English artist, has exhibited Brick Lane Gallery, London and twice enjoyed the Global Art Agency. Proudly a mostly self-taught painter, with life drawing tutoring, she experimentally paints anything from abstract, impressionistic styles to bold figurative art, in many media, drawing some inspiration from her travels.

Affinity with Landscape. In this series of paintings I seek to convey the feelings experienced whilst walking many long distance trails amongst vast and isolated landscapes.

I’m a contemporary realist painter working primarily with acrylics/oil on canvas. I focus on subjects close to my immediate environment which include still life and landscape. I am influenced in part by pop culture and by the work of artists I admire.
