Welcome 127 artists are taking part in this year’s Open Studio event. Welcome to everyone who chooses to visit any of the 100 studios over the 16 days of the 4th Margaret River Region Open Studios event, which runs between 22nd April and the 7th May 2017. We welcome new artists who are participating for the first time and really appreciate the enthusiasm of the artists who are opening up their studios to visitors for the second, third or even the fourth year. We thank them all for their willingness to share their creativity with the wider community.

W hat Has Happened Since The Last Open Studios Event? A successful crowdfunding campaign raised nearly $24,000, which enabled MRROS to appoint Monica Field as part-time Administrator and Secretary. The Board has been rejuvenated with the appointments of Jim Davies, Ella McDonald and Sarah Roberts to fill the retirement of John Garde who, helped by Su, did the work of three people for the last few years. The other highlight of the year has been Margaret River Region Open Studios’s association with M and P Publishing, culminating in the publication of the attractive and informative book, “Artists of the Margaret River Region” which is on sale via our website www.mrros.com.au and selected bookshops. Julien Sanderson, Vice-Chair and Hon Treasurer has carried a huge workload over the year and the event would struggle without the enthusiastic marketing and communication energy of Mechelle Bernhardt backed up by Emily Jackson’s graphic design skills. The organisation would wilt without its remarkable volunteers: Anita Haywood, advertisers’ and sponsors’ coordinator, Genny Broadhurst, Creator and Editor of the newsletters and Niomi O’Hara who continued as our Grant-seeker-in-chief. In 2016 Margaret River Region Open Studios received a $31,000 grant from the Department of Culture and the Arts, a $10,000 Icon Award from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, an $8,000 Major Tourism Award from the City of Busselton and $4,000 from the SW Development Commission. John Miller from John Miller Design continued as Gold Sponsor and was joined by Greenpiper Wines and Scott Print. Nearly all our sponsors and advertisers continued their commitment to Margaret River Region Open Studios. The stronger financial backing and the great support of the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association has meant that the event, being held for the first time after the Easter school holidays, has been better marketed this year. Above all, the Board and I hope that visitors will enjoy engaging with the artistic talent of the Margaret River Region while discovering as many of the region’s remarkable attractions as possible. I thank the whole Open Studios family for all their support. Bill Castleden, Chair, Margaret River Region Open Studios 2

The Biggest Open Studio Event in Australia The Margaret River Region Open Studios program continues to flourish and this year more artists than ever are throwing open their studio doors to welcome visitors from all over the world. The event- taking place from 22nd April to 7th May - has become a high point in the south west of Western Australia’s artistic calendar, introducing its visitors to the incredibly rich crucible of talent and creativity that exists within the region. Attracting a mix of emerging, established and award wining artists, the event has grown from strength to strength and offers the perfect introduction for novice buyers to invest in original art or the serious art collector the opportunity to discover the next Brett Whiteley or Bromley. The uniqueness of the Open Studio event allows you to get up close and personal in the private studios of painters, printmakers, sculptors, ceramicists, jewellers, photographers, textile artists and environmentally focused up-cycling artists. Throughout this 16-day event visitors can move from venue to venue; each open studio is identified on the maps in this Catalogue. Visitors can have a break with coffee or refreshment by using the Cafe Trail map. Entry is free.

Message from our Patrons We are delighted to be the foundation patrons of Margaret River Region Open Studios. Having had hands on experience with visual art on our wine labels and performing art at the concerts at Leeuwin Estate in Margaret River for some 40 years we have experienced first hand the very positive effect artists’ creativity can have on a business. Margaret River Region Open Studios is proving to be a great stimulus for the arts community of the Cape-to-Cape Region of South Western Australia. This year 127 artists are displaying their works and creativity while opening their venues to the public throughout the district. We wish all involved with the 2017 event enormous success and encourage you, the public, to venture out and about to enjoy these 16 days of cultural exploration in our very special South West environment. I love being an encaustic explorer. In the last five years wax has become my passion, tying together my love of paint, paper and cloth. While experimenting with this tactile medium I have been able to create works of depth and texture. The other interesting works to be found in my studio embraces the maker in me. You will find my interpretation of traditional Japanese stitchery, cyanotype prints (photographic prints) on linen and an eclectic collection of hand crafted pieces. Being raised in south-west Queensland has given my artist’s eye an in-depth appreciation of the power of place and space. My journey began as an oil painter, but my tertiary education majoring in interior design has influenced my evolution as an artist. My art is a melting pot of pursuits with photography playing an integral part in the development of my work. The personification of subjects, both natural and manmade, has a major presence in my work. Painting/Printmaking/Drawing/ Mixed Media

I studied fine art in the 1980’s at Stellenbosch University. After years of designing and installing gardens, I’ve loved rediscovering my paintbox. I am primarily an outdoor mixed media painter. This year’s work is influenced by a trip to the red centre. I still lurk in Chook pens in my spare time. I inherited a printing press from a dear friend, which has led to an exploration with a forgotten medium. I’m currently investigating Scottish migration to the South West. Migration being a topic close to my heart. Address: 4 Harvest Road, Busselton T: 0438 554 254 E: mandy@riverace.com.au Directions: From Busselton continue west towards Dunsborough. As with harmonic music, visual harmonies in nature can momentarily move the viewer to deeper connection with their innerbeing.I paint in a manner to reflect that stillness. E: john@tinkahill.com.au I am currently working on a series of observational charcoal drawings of the patterns found in the natural world. Using the drawings as a jump off point I’m developing large abstract canvasses... guided to take risks in mark making by listening to the suggestions made by the paint... it’s a leap of faith into the unknown which seems to grow organically from memory and observation. My personal style as an Artist, extends from stylised whimsical portraits & drawings, mixed media paintings and vibrant and expressive canvas pieces, created in the intuitive style of painting. Always threading my pieces through, with self exploratory messages to uplift, reflect and inspire the human spirit. At 73 I have finally found my artistic voice. Under the guidance of John Garde I studied the technique of tonal realism leading to painting satisfying landscape and still life paintings in oils on canvas and also acrylic on paper. This has allowed the expansion into semi-abstraction and experimentation with colour. A moving mass revealing details beyond what we can perceive with our eye. Look at the detail in the face of a forming wave or the spray of a backlit lip. Truly beautiful.

I love my life. There are never enough hours in the day. I spend half the night dreaming up new projects and then in the day putting them into practice. At present, I’m working on my second children’s book featuring my darling dogs and a perpetual birthday calendar featuring birds and their nests in and around my garden. My new challenge is taxonomy and at present, making a display cabinet for thirty plus birds currently in my deep freeze awaiting my attention! Expressing life through textiles is my creative medium. I combine my love of quilting, with photography, patchwork, eco dying, thread play and recycling the scraps left over! Installations/Mixed Media/Painting/Printmaking/Drawing

Art is not what I do, it’s how I live my life. Creativity is as essential as breathing and I look for the creative potential in everything around me – including the things other people discard. My art is wildly different, ranging from very controlled drawings and paintings to very loose and expressive mixed media and encaustics. I love experimenting with new techniques and materials and challenging the preconceived ideas of what can and can’t be done or what can and can’t be used to make art. My art often spills out of the studio into the garden, much to the delight of the neighbourhood children. Represented by Hamelin Bay Wines, Smithereens Cafe and Harmans Estate. This year I have a pop-up art space in Talliesen’s lovely garden. I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised by the array of imaginative art indoors and out! Just follow the giggling! Jonathon Thwaites

Sculpture/Mixed Media/Printmaking/ Drawing/Painting

Jonathon explores the inner universe outwardly using found materials to mimic patterns of natural environments. He externalises the internal, bringing the soul (as pattern) as it is manifest in the material world, to focus to elucidate the inner soulfulness of our material world. He is interested in pattern. Our minds operate as pattern recognition systems. The vast quantity of detail we perceive in our material world is by nature overwhelming for our minds to accommodate. By necessity and without consciousness, in most cases, the vast detail is converted to more manageable patterns, which inherently contain less data. These approximations and overviews are then available for our thought processes. To be aware of the pattern process is to be aware of the limitations of perception. 97 Alice Linford-Forte and Paris Hawken Alice Linford-Forte

Painting/Printmaking/Drawing

After another year of travelling, and stimulated by new energy, style and inspiration, I’m returning once again to participate in the Open Studios event of 2017. For the last few years I’ve worked mainly in oils, creating large abstract and semi-abstract works of bold colour and impact. Now I think I’m slowly beginning to soften, focussing on a gentler palette and more negative space. I love opening my studio doors to art lovers, and welcoming them into the rustic farm environment in which I grew up. T: 0409 576 007 E: alicegisella1@gmail.com www.theartofalice.com

Paris Hawken

Photography

Paris Hawken is a young Margaret River photographer, who works with alternative photography techniques such as cyanotypes. She explores light and the human body using her ethereal, feminine and minimalistic style. T: 0409 576 007 E: hello@parishawkenphotography.com.au www.parishawkenphotography.com.au Address: 368 West Calgardup Road, Witchcliffe Directions: Half way along Redgate Rd, between Witchcliffe and Caves Rd, turn into Thompson Rd. At the T-junction at the end of Thompson, turn right. The farm gate is about 100m on the left. Follow the signs, through the giant peppermint trees, to the studio.
