origins

The recent revival of Cowboy films - such as Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained - means that the wild west has suddenly became accessible and interesting to our generation. This sudden

influx of history has led to a whole new meaning of the word ‘tribe’, with fashion culture adopting the term to coin various styles. In a sense, the whole industry is propelled forwards and motivated by the different fashion cultures and tribes of our generation. Through this trend a different tribe has emerged. One in which an individualistic, creative approach to the fashion world is both appreciated and admired. On the street for this season, there are two major ways this western trend can be found; firstly as a transition from the summer festival season, whereby aztec capes are a must, clashing patterns and textures are essential and feathers in your hair are totally acceptable. The other is through the very literal translation of Native American beliefs combined with the furry textures of winter.

style muse Both Olsen twins are essential style muses for this particular trend and all of it’s subcategories. With the perfect mix of individualism with trend, these twins know how to conquer this comfort-driven and print-crazed style.

A modern bohemian twist means that both of the Olsen’s are permanently on top of this particular style, achieved mainly through mixing classic and minimal pieces with a statement colour or faux fur jacket.

trend #1

Glacial Indulgence like Shrimps mixed with the likes of Fendi and Gucci. The nature of fur itself is fairly outlandish and brave, but this year the classic coat is not so classic anymore. Bigger, shaggier, fluffier and more couture than ever before, the big players at fashion week such as Louis Vuitton and Anna Sui created coats of various prints, sizes and also patterns. Fur coats now sport a variety of stripes, dots and patches. Shrimps also brought their vintage flair to this trend by adding in a variety of colours to the mix; dusty pink, bottle green and bright yellow were some personal favourites.

This particular style requires a mix of luxury and not being afraid to stand out in a crowd. The

more traditional winter furs of previous years have been given an upgrade in 2015 to a much more customisable and outlandish style. While this trend can be interpreted as a translation of the summer festival trend, it is mainly a nod to the classic winter style but with a modern attitude. The woman who wears this trend is confident in her own skin, looks for statement pieces which can only be found on her, and is fashionforward in a way that no other trend could predict. Think of brands 9

stella mccartney AW’15

Stella McCartney’s ‘fur-free fur’ collection sported various textures and oversized fits. The fuller the coat, the better. A slight nod to the 70’s means that in order to be ahead of the crowd this year, go for a longline fur coat as opposed to the cropped and boxy fit of 2014.

louis vuitton & fendi AW‘15

More and more high street stores are catching on to high fashion trends as the trickle-down effect gets faster. Go for a coat with a bold colour or pattern; or maybe even both if you feel daring enough! Stripes are more on trend than ever when it comes to fur this year, so if you feel like going for pattern try out this one from River Island (see below). Team your fluffy friend with a much more neutral palette to add a more classic look to your outfit.

trend #2

Native Freedom

15

The freedom and spirit of traditional native American’s is represented through this trend, with their freedom becoming a symbol of our own individuality stylistically. Throughout this

trend, the festi-babe theme of summer appears through a more tribal and aztec influence. With a much more direct link to the film industry and revival of Western films, the theme of Native American Indians vs. Cowboys becomes more significant than ever. There is a very obvious, and in no way understated, representation of Native America throughout the trend. Textures include the likes of suede, fringing and cord, all topped off with a brimmed cowboy-style hat. Think of the Indian’s texture combined with the Cowboy’s pattern palette, and this trend is it. If you’re looking to take on this trend in a John Wayne meets clint eastwood-style stand off, an appreciation of the previous summer boho feel is most likely needed as much of the texture and accessorising of this season is carried on from last.

chanel pre-fall‘15

Chanel embodies the Cowboy; a mismatch of textures and lengths combined with a classically autumnal palette makes their prefall collection an exact visualisation of this trend. Match an oversized poncho with a high neck sweater like this one from Topshop (see below) for a clashing of prints, and team with moccasins for a more modern take on cowboy boots.

burberry prosum AW‘15

Think modern Pochahontas when it comes to the Burberry look. With a much more neutral colour palette of browns, this side to the trend is much less mix and match. Fringing layered with a midi or full-length skirt and knee-highs like these from River Island (see below), is just the right combination of texture. Add in some lace-up detailing for a more casual vibe to this trend.

origins

As the fashion industry continues to move forward by looking back, we encounter a time warp to the 60s and 70s. Mods and Rockers take control of the industry with Twiggy, bowl cuts and black winged liner all staples for this era. This era sports a fairly neutral palette combined with a pop of bright red or denim blue. The beginning of an androgynous era arises, whereby what was once a female characteristic now becomes unisex and vice versa. The age of the hippie meets boyish tailoring and encounters clean-cut silhouettes; making this time travel one of the most significant and historically exciting yet.

23

style muse Our style muse for this trend is of course Suki Waterhouse; queen of laid-back chic. By mixing classic vintage pieces with modern staple basics, Suki’s doe-eyed look points to nothing other than 60s fashion. Not afraid to rock denim-on-denim,

our style muse truly transports us to a different era through her style. Confidence is key when conquering this look - it’s all about your own true individuality and style. Wear whatever you want but make sure to pair it with some serious Suki style.

Androgynous Nostalgia

This girl is all about direct opposites; whether it be mixing different styles, different textures, different lengths or different style periods.

90s grunge and 60s swing? Yup. Oversized jackets with mini skirts? Check. Dr Martens mixed with a floral maxi dress? You guessed it. Paired off with wide brim hats and beanies, this minimal look has a strong unisex vibe running throughout and could be worn by rocker girls and hippy boys alike. 27

Add pops of muted mustard like this Topshop jacket and inundate your wardrobe with oversized jumpers and culotte- style trousers. To look more put together, a pair of boyish tailored trousers with a turtleneck, longline waistcoat and monk shoes is the way forward.

margaret howell AW‘15

Invest in a staple printed jumper like this one from Zara (see below) and stick to a neutral palette with a range of different dimensions. For a casual look, try ripped boyfriend jeans with a ditsy patterned shirt and oversized jumper thrown over the top. Try adding in some throwback 70’s dimensions with longer hemlines and a dash of floral print.

Retro Flare For this ultimate vintage-retro look, a quick wit and quirky dressing are staples. Brands such as Sister Jane deliver just the right amount of 70s without getting too hippy (give them a cheeky ASOS when you have the chance!), while DKNY and Hermes are both brands which inspire the trend through the layered turtlenecks on their catwalks. Pointed boots, suede, tassels and skinny scarfs are all must haves this season, with the headto-toe 70’s look from summer being ditched for individualism and mixing texture and print. For a more casual look, Chloe delivered some gorgeous bohemian vibes which can easily be translated from day to night. 33

To get this look, stick to a neautral palette with pops of red, chocolate brown and yellow. With a hint of dusky pink, there is a predominantly autumnal palette with a main focus on detail like this Zara top (see left).

37

our look

anna sui AW’15

Anna Sui delivered the 70s vibe with a heavy focus on print, making this Topshop jumpsuit (see right) perfect for a high street dupe. Pair classic 70s pieces like flares with more one-off vintage bits, and go for colour blocking in layers with patterned skirts.
