Fig.2 Ocualr 84

Ocular 84 George Orwell’s ‘1984’ dystopian novel popularised the big brother concept, creating a totalitarianism view in which our current society has been compared to. Increase in the use and development of drones, and the concern surrounding them sees a need for increased privacy control. Tech is permeating everything we do, surveillance and data collection is now embedded in everyday life. Whilst generation Y are becoming reacquainted with the benefits of anonymity online, Generation Z’s memories will have been documented from day 1 resulting in a generation more likely to be worried about the future. If internet will be a human right by 2025, the whole world will be able to access our personal information. Ocular 84 will show the transition from the willingness to share our lives across various platforms to a more guarded persona online and offline. We no longer want to be a passenger but a director of our own lives. Expect to see frosted surfaces and opaque qualities, mimicking the alternating play of transparencies found in the natural iceberg. These mock-ups demonstrate the transformation from transparent to semi-opaque reflecting the current state of society’s views towards privacy. Keeping in mind the brand’s attributes, the clothes take on the role of defence, obscuring the view of what’s underneath, ensuring nothing stands in your way. Soft graduations of colour bring a new aesthetic updating the sportswear look of the Puma brand.

Fig.7 Organic Imploration

Organic Imploration

With the rise in consumers becoming aware of the products they are consuming, with a yearning to know more about where they come from and how they were made. As a generation we are looking back to our natural roots and the organic appeal of nature to ease our doubts about the future. Consumers are suddenly full of anxiety in regards to technology advancements and the un-certainty that is apparent within our economic environment. The housing market is uncertain, jobs are no longer for life and we as a whole are looking for some form of stability within these worrying times. These anxieties are manifesting in consumers forcing them to clamp to nature in order to cover these doubts, with the distraction in revelling in something pure. Organic imploration is a juxtaposition between the organic appeal consumers are reaching for, paired with an ever changing environment. Embellished florals, digitally printed textures and mechanical versions of nature reminiscent of that of the Chanel couture show installation. Our two worlds collide in this explosive and vibrant take on the organic movement.

Emphatic Bemusement

Extreme divergence eliminates the middle ground and creates a gulf of ‘no inbetween’. An elegant and artful clash with chaotic energy results in unexpected pairings creating a perfect paradox. An extension of clashing patterns, as seen on the catwalk has emerged into clashing textures. Over exaggeration is key with this trend, with surrealist elements coming into play to create excessive combinations. Odd compositions will become a way of developing self-expression. Clashing textures will be an indication of our confused state in society with regards to what is accepted as the ‘norm’. This trend will be a backlash towards the pressures to conform to societies ideologies. Strong references to art and history will be evident in creations, with a nod to surreal and 60s style artwork. Expect to see whimsical pastels versus midnight hues and clashing textures such as velvet and fur.

Fig.15 Hi-Confluence

Hi-Confluence

Technology is an ever growing trend, with constant advancements. There is a focus on the differentiation between online and offline interaction and whether we can embrace technology without losing our humanity. As a generation, we are highly focused on our goals for efficiency and success, and are determined for technology to work instantaneously. This is creating unrealistic goals offline, making us more impatient and demanding as a generation. We are so integrated in digital technology, that we tend to subconsciously create multiple unrealistic personas of ourselves. There is a sense of having to please our ‘friends’ on social media sites such as Facebook, who we see as more of an ‘audience’ than actual friends. This is becoming accepted in today’s society and being seen as the norm, for example research was carried out where a 25 year old Dutch designer faked a trip across Asia for Instagram. There is a suggestion of an isolated generation of people who are hiding behind screens and developing schizophrenic qualities as a result. This is in an attempt to prove to ourselves that we can convey multiple identities and lifestyle choices simultaneously. Except to see monochrome hues, geometric shapes and futuristic fabrics.

Fig.19 Stuffocation

Stuffocation

We no longer feel enriched by items we own, we instead feel suffocated. Why is it that we continue to buy ‘stuff’, even though i doesn’t increase our levels of happiness? Cheap prices and easy accessibility increase peoples likelihood to buy into it. The overconsumption of ‘stuff’ with meaningless impact to our lives has resulted in a backlash, with people insistent in de-cluttering and living more simplistically. Ownership isn’t important anymore and everything is available to rent. As we become increasingly obsessed with social media and creating a fake persona for ourselves, in order to impress our online audience, we are more interested in temporarily owning items. Our generation aims to show-off and with a constant presence of competition among people trying to outdo one another, ownership is no longer as essential as it once was. An overwhelming colour palette and prismatic graphics will capture the essence of this trend.

Fig.23 Un-Anthropic

Un-Anthropic

The anthropic principle is the law of human existence, it is well known that our presence in this universe depends on numerous cosmological constants. If even a single variable were off we would not exist. Un-anthropic considers how the boundaries of our reality are constantly being pushed beyond understanding. . Materials such as Perspex and organza will be used to mirror the fluidity and vast space of the unknown. Originating from a fascination with the sea, a desire to know more has progressed in to a stronger curiosity of the universe and the unknown. Films such as interstellar and gravity highlight this obsession, encouraging people to think more about the possibility of living on another planet. The one way ticket to Mars and the developments within 3D printing; that will enable the creation of colonies, means that one day existence may be possible beyond this planet. The longevity of the supernatural trend is further confirmed by Marvel who recently announced their future releases for the next five years. Materials such as Perspex and organza will be used to mirror the fluidity and vast space of the unknown.

Fig.27 Realised Eschatology

Realised Eschatology

De-extinction is the act of reviving previously extinct species through the use of genetic technology. It’s gaining ground due to advances in genetic sequencing, scientists have already started work on animals such as the woolly mammoth and sourcing DNA from fossils to create clones. It takes us one step closer to building a future where by the animals brought back to life will restore biodiversity. Once it succeeds the techniques will be applicable to hundreds of other species, marking a ground-breaking new gateway between nature and technology. There is a reconsideration of the past and the creation of new products for imagined worlds and futures that may once have seemed improbable. Extinct creatures and wild landscapes have been featured but reconstructed with a futuristic twist. For example Marguerite Humeau reconstructed the vocal chords of the woolly mammoth to recreate sounds of the prehistoric world. Resurrect old techniques and craft forms with materials reminiscent of fossilised matter and apply iridescent coatings to introduce a contemporary futuristic feel.
