Event mailers, by Emily Gregor

Event Mailers by Emily Gregor PROJECT We had to design a mail invitation and envelope for one of the events provided by Professor Ward. We utilized the text and attempted to develop compelling and stylish imagery to communicate the essence of our chosen events. I incorporated multiple panels/pages to contain and complement the text and imagery.

Specifications & Concept I researched what kind of mailed invitations are out there that deal with your event. The event I chose was Trick or Treating in East Village. Next I began to brainstorm and sketch my ideas. I wanted to use fun colors and and wanted it to appeal to kids more than to parents.I didn’t want to make it spooky but I still wanted it to convey the sense of Halloween. I also believe in providing a service to my audience, so I want to provide a stencil as a take away along with a map of East Village. For this project, I had to rapid prototype and sketch out my ideas on the actual form that I chose. I decided making my design 6x6 inches, with a 3-dimensional cover. I experimented and explored my options both in black and white and full color for the invitation and the envelope. I produced two copies, one that will be mailed to my Professor’s office that he will keep and one that will be handed in in-class by the due date.

Inspiration

For this project, I had a lot of inspiration. I was really interested in creating takeaways that would be fun and inspire kids to get their parents to take them to the event. I thought

about incorporating food, stencils, balloons, the works. In the end, I found that it wasn’t logical and seemed forced, but I was inspired and was interested in incorporating things like that.

Sketches

First Drafts

At this point, I planned on making a 6x6-inch card, with the cover being more 3-D, including a map and a stencil for

those who received the invitation. I experimented with color and form to create the strongest composition.

Of all of my color choices I really enjoyed the orange and yellow composition the best.

I thought it looked really fun and it’s similar to what is found on a mason jar so I thought it would effectively communicate fall and fun and traditions. For my other font, I initially used Georgia, but then found a sans-serif to be more condusive to what I was looking for, so I picked Futura Medium.

Other Elements

For the maps, I used different levels of zoom to figure out what will be the most helpful and show the most details, while also fitting into a compact space.

I wanted to create fun stencils kids could use to carve pumpkins or color with, the size restriction ended up being a problem, but I really liked the idea. I also wanted to include the logo for East Village so people would be familiar with what I was talking about.

Envelope Iterations

Figuring out the dimensions of the envelope was probably the most difficult part. As far as content, I wanted it to be consistent with the invitation but I didn’t want there to be too much ifnormation so people would have to open it to find out more.

After a constructive critique, I altered my designs to incorporate the sans serif font and worked on making the cover more 3-dimensional. I also decided to have the stencil be separate from the design and attach it inside so kids could tear it off.

PUMPKIN STENCIL

As a result of the new layout, I was able to increase the size of the stencil to be 6x6-inches with more detail than it had before.

though I didn’t think it really added that much asthetically. To adhere my envelope, I also affixed a black glittered spider to add a fun element that’s also effective and necessary for mailing purposes.

After another critique, I decided to change my mind completely and do a joy-fold card. I ended up eliminating the stencil and making the card more compact. Overall, I am pleased with how it turned out. The
