High-rise residential building: Density
Floating Gardens= Identity+Density
SOHO SYRACUSE is a work-live building in downtown Syracuse, NY. The project aims to increase the social exchange between people who live in an urban environment nowadays. The project incorporates IDENTITY as single house garden and DENSITY as high-rise residential building into the floating garden that allows different social connections (with traditional high-rise residential building) happened between occupants. In addition to the floating gardens, in the lower level, there are several small offices provided to the occupants. The gathering working spaces for residents not only provide them a appropriate small distance from home to work but also increase the possibility of business and social exchange in the “building community.

2002 HISTORY OF THE SITE
The project aims to create an intersection between the commercial and communal activities that co-existing in the same space-time, achieving positive social interaction. There are four urban alphabets for its own function and a grammar system to connect urban alphabet. The method could be used to achieve same goal in different site situation.

The ramp system aims to control the movement of tourist. The ramps are extended from the surrounding commercial street where the stores and vendors located, and create the concentration of intersection of night market experience.
The commercial cores are linear spaces witch attached to the ramps. The spaces are where the night market located, and be occupied 24 hours for all the commercial activities. Food Vendors

Urban Alphabet
The complex crowd who come round night market is the major reason that night market cannot work well with community. There are 4 alphabets - ramps, commercial cores, community surfaces and roof system - in the thesis project. Each of urban alphabet has its own function and aims to settle the conflict between tourists and residents.
Roof plays a role to blur two programs spatially. There are two main components in the roof system: structure system and ceiling system.
The standing space for community public program which released from the condensed commercial occupancy. The community surface could be any programs that provide to the community or local activities, for instance, basketball court, gym, playground or classroom. However, each program has different level of privacy, which is the key consideration to deal with its relationship with night market. PUBLIC

The project aims to provide diverse communication options to users. By providing different levels of privacy in the public transportation system, every individual passenger or group could be able to choose their suitable spaces in the transportation system, as well as in the station. In order to create confortable spaces in the building, the folding operation would distinguish private programs from public programs and remain the interactive vision condiction.

Starting from analyzing the site, the former Taipei Train Depot, by thousands of lines, the project aims to create special narrative from pressure and lines. LINES indicate the possibility of movement in the site. The huge unopened factory site has been isolated from the neighbors for a long time. The fluent flow reconnects the historical site with citizen’s life inside out; furthermore, it activates the original vitality of the train culture in Taiwan. The volumes and void are produced by the PRESSURE under the bunch of lines, which affect the density of the programs, and create different levels of social interactions. By twisting lines, pressure starts to sculpt volume into multiple condensed spaces, which accomplish cross programing and high density of activities. The architecture, as the infrastructure, leads the movement of people from public leisure space into condensed mix-programs volume. The combination of LINES and PRESSURES shape different spatial narratives from the existing tracks to the structure of canopies, then the mixed commercial and culture center. With the meticulous movement in the site, the composition of history and present, culture and commerce are all experienced by the people.

No matter how chaste we wish the world was, social gap do exists in every corner. Trying to narrow this gap in this project, we will use musical arts as the medium to create certain exchanges and connection between “high-brow” and “low-brow”. In the program phase, solve the social gap by mixing various programs: music hall, open performance space, busking space, music practice room, broad cast studio and educational facilities. By breaking the wall of “social gap” to release high brow musical arts out for the public, at the meantime create chances for lowbrow’s performance being more accessible.
