SKILLS Hello! My name is Emily and I am an architectural designer living, learning, and working in Philadelphia. The contagious energy of a thriving city or neighborhood is what inspires me as a designer every day - what components of its fabric makes it a success? I believe architecture should challenge the world it lives in, not simply spatialize it.

.01 LEESBURG PREMIUM OUTLETS Bergmann Associates // Leesburg, Virginia // Proposed Exterior Renovation Given its context in Virginia, Leesburg Premium Outlets borrows from American Colonial architecture by using small brick, stone + gabled roofs throughout its storefronts. We carried this language + materiality to create a seamless transition from architecture to exterior spaces in our renovation proposal. Our scope included creating 3 communal exterior spaces, as well as new landscaping + hardscaping for the outlet walkways. The exterior nodes we created invite consumers to spend time at the Outlet outside of simply shopping. A fire court area with a large brick fire place + plenty of seating, a turf court with games + outdoor activites for the whole family, and a lush, welcoming entrance are schematic renderings we created for the proposal.

.02 ARUNDEL MILLS MALL Bergmann Associates // Hanover, Maryland // Proposed Food Court Renovation The Arundel Mills Food Court has retained the same furniture and finishes for more than a decade after its inception. Our goal was to bring the dated food court to life with modern yet timeless finishes, furniture, and lighting fixtures. By creating a “social urban spine,” food court diners have a variety of seating options ranging from bar stool tables for large groups to lounge furniture for people looking to relax. In addition to more soft seating, we added 20% seating in the rest of the court. Two large entrance columns are focal points for the court and symmetrically frame the urban spine, the curving language mimicking the ceiling planes above. A neutral color pallate of calming blues, tans, and accents of wood create a clean yet warm environment for customers to unwind from shopping.

.03 CORRIDOR CITIES TRANSITWAY AECOM // Montgomery County, Maryland // Bus Rapid Transit Line + Stations Montgomery County strives to be known for their booming bio-technology field, and has already let this influence several buildings and developments in the area. The CCT Alignment circulates around several locations that already do or will dedicate themselves to the life sciences, so I designed Helix concept to successfully fit into the fabric of their context while also creating a unifying element that effectively brands the alignment. The malleable form of a helix illustrates a vision of lightness and structural transparency, one that provides effective shelter without rigid confinement. My Helix concept was the chosen design to be pushed forward as we further developed transitway stations and the Operations and Maintenance facility. My renderings have since been publicized on WTOP news and Bethesda Magazine.

school
The Bamiyan Culture Center design competition was an open international architectural design project competition with a goal to provide a multi-purpose state-of-the art cultural complex and research facility. The building will provide adaptable space that can be used for variety of culture-related purposes and art events. The Centre is organized into three levels; the school, the offices. the gallery/theatre, and a grand cascading gathering space acts as the glue, connecting the gallery/theatre to the school. For the form traditional Islamic thought was studied, like the plans of the school takes after the Madrasa school. The gallery, the most public area, is placed south east to be closest to Mecca, yet openings in the facade frame out the near by Buddhist sites.

.05 CANTEBURY EARTHQUAKES MEMORIAL Competition // Christchurch, New Zealand // Schematic Design This memorial creates a space that pays homage to the lives lost from the Canterbury earthquakes through the utilization of a palate of natural elements and materials. A granite stone water wall retains the earth on the north bank, engraved with the names of those lost during the earthquake. Wooden seating, that appears to be peeling up from the earth, face the length of the water wall and the river. The same peeling effect is mimicked through the benches across the memorial, creating a flawless transition between the landscape and terrain. Next to the park area are 185 dancing fountains, commemorating the 185 lives lost. A wooden bridge connecting the two banks leads to a picnicking area and amphitheater style seating to the terrain. Through methods of emerging from the earth, the memorial ignites a sense of rebirth and hope for the community.

.06 EARLY WOMEN ARCHITECTS IN MARYLAND EXHIBIT AIABaltimore Traveling Exhibit // State-wide in Maryland // Exhibit Programmer In Maryland, women have been practicing architecture professionally for over 80 years. However, there is little found research on these trailblazing women. As a part of the Women in Architecture Committee of AIABaltimore, I co-led a year long project to discover the early women who contributed to architecture in Maryland and assemble their stories in a traveling exhibit. I mentored and guided architecture students at Morgan State University in a undergraduate research course to contribute to this exhibit, while simultaneously designing and researching for the exhibit with the WIA committee. This exhibit, designed with the intent for easy installation, has traveled to over 12+ locations ranging from public libraries, college campuses, and other AIA headquarters, as well as the AIA National Convention in Philadelphia. It has been featured on WYPR radio twice. Most remarkably for me, two women featured in the exhibit, both in their 90s, were able to attend the grand opening of the exhibit.

.08 ARTIST COMMUNITY Temple University // Philadelphia, PA // Studio Project The mindset and psychology of a Dancer can be depicted through a series of emotions and rythyms. What inspires a Dancer to grow and succeed? The dancer studio fosters the growth of a dancer through the use of a lofted open floor plan, significant natural light, and steeped amphitheater located in the back for performances. Located at Penn Treaty Park, the Artist Community unites a group of artists to learn from each other while living in an enriching environment.

.09 CARVED SPACES Temple University // Philadelphia, PA // Studio Project Spaces are catered to serve the human body and how it occupies it. Through the mapping of points of movement during a frame of time, a volume is created that translates fluidity into inhabitable architecture. This exercise illustrates the complexities of how the body demands space and a design to follow this criteria.

.10 CONSHOHOCKEN FUNFEST BRANDING Bergmann Associates // Conshohocken, PA // Poster Design The Borough of Conshohocken tasked me with designing a poster promoting their 23rd annual “Conshohocken Funfest event located in downtown. The Borough was seeking a design that attracted an audience of all ages and boldly promoted the days events. I created three iterations of the posters while collaborating with the event organizers. The final poster design was placed in all downtown restaurants/stores as well as on Funfest merchandise.
