World Book Day 2017 in Eaton Grove Girls and staff dressed up as their favourite book characters for the day, each donating ÂŁ1 to the charity Book Aid International. Activities in the library included tweet your reading with #girlslovereading and 'shelfies' (selfies against favourite book shelves). There was also the opportunity for girls to complete a bookmark with details of their favourite book for display.

World Book Day: Stafford House It has been an exciting (and busy!) week of Beatrix Potter inspired activities in Stafford House in honour of World Book Day. Nursery created their own Mr McGregor’s garden, while Reception girls have written and illustrated their favourite parts of the Beatrix Potter tales. They also dug for vegetables in the woods, using the produce to make their own 'Rabbity Wraps.' Kindergarten have enjoyed researching some of the less well known Beatrix Potter characters such as Simpkin and Miss Moppet. Lower 1 brought Peter Rabbit to life with stick puppets and Lower 2 designed their own Beatrix Potter characters ready for writing their own tale. Upper 2 and Lower 3 brought Beatrix Potter tales into the 21st century by collaborating to write their own modern day interpretations of the classic stories. On Thursday, the entire school enjoyed a Beatrix Potter themed picnic, wearing masks made by all of the girls throughout the week.

Celebrating Beatrix Potter with Hercules the Hedgehog

Upper 1 were delighted to have a very prickly visitor to their classroom on Wednesday. To try to draw like Beatrix Potter, the girls attempted to sketch Hercules the hedgehog from direct observation as he snuffled around on the table. Far from being an ideal still-life model, the girls embraced the challenge of drawing a fidgety four-legged friend. They thoroughly enjoyed having a real-life hedgehog to look at, helping them to understand how Beatrix Potter was inspired by the nature around her when creating her drawings and subsequent books.

Norwich Head Race For the second year running, the Rowing Club entered the top VIII into the Norwich Head Race as a warm-up event for the major Tideway events coming up: The Women’s Eights Head on Saturday 11th March 2017 and The School's Head on Thursday 23rd March 2017. The novice women’s eights category drew a healthy field. Our crew had a storming row and were pleased to continue their winning streak. Their time made them the second fastest women’s crew on the day, beating several higher status eights as they did so. Thank you to all of the parents for their increasing support, especially for dropping off the rowers at 6.15am for an early training session.

Launch of the Big BBQ Fill-it On Thursday, our team of girls who won the 'Design a Sub Competition 2016', proudly attended the launch event of their Big BBQ Fill-it sandwich at the Subway franchise on Rampant Horse Street, Norwich. The girls met with the owner of the Norwich Subway franchise, received samples of live promotional materials for their new sub and were involved in a professional photoshoot to promote the competition and their new creation. Following this, the girls were treated to their own platter, including a sample of the new sub (which Mrs Wells and Mr Nobes mainly enjoyed eating)! Well done to Akshaya, Megan, Amy and Jessica for this excellent achievement. The Big BBQ Fill-it is now available to purchase in Subway stores across the region throughout March.

Oculus Rift Our Digital Leaders had fun with the school's new Oculus Rift virtual reality headset at lunchtime on Wednesday. They experienced the Apollo 11 spaceflight complete with historical audio of Armstrong & Aldrin, got close to some big cats in the wild and created their own 3D artwork. The educational application of the VR headset could open endless exciting opportunities: virtual trips to history sites, museums, or even planets in our solar system are already made possible by brave developers.

Student Digital Conference We had a fantastic day at the Student Digital Conference hosted at South Hampstead High School, alongside 21 other GDST schools. Our Student Digital leaders were given the task of creating an idea on how to break down the barriers of different languages. Our girls worked together to design a mobile application which would allow people to find like-minded people who speak the languages they are interested in. Creating a website, marketing ideas and financial planning were all part of the project. Out of the 22 schools, we received the Silver Award from the judging panel and the People’s Choice Award, which was selected by the other attending schools.
