Analysis and Transformation of Buildings

“The objective of this exercise is twofold. First, to introduce analysis as a tool for understanding fundamental relationships in buildings.

Unearthing fundamental relationships develops your fluency in the language of Architecture.

As you begin to ‘read’ Architecture more clearly your ability to ‘speak’ Architecture will increase. In other words, clear analysis is fertile ground for good design.

Second, it is my hope that through this exercise you will introduce me to your individual ways of working, (your design process to date) including how you define problems and how you structure a coherent approach for achieving them. This will help me critique your work and add to yourself knowledge.”

I ntuitive P aper M odel Our objective was to creative a three dimensional “thing” from photocopies of a plan of a building. I created this paper sculpture that developed intuitively from my understanding of the Moore House.

S ynthetical P aper M odel After our initial creation, we were asked to create a new three dimensional “thing” using photocopies of our plan, but this time respecting the original design concept.

“The objective of this exercise is to introduce you to the degrees of enclosure and of architectural space. You will explore both ‘open’ and ‘closed’ space through 2D and 3D modeling. Using your kit of parts create one group of spaces which explores both open and closed space.”

“The objective of this exercise is to continue to explore space making by generating a system of spaces from a space(s). This process has two purposes. One, to create a space(s) which has a regulating geometry that allows extension and growth into a system (pattern) of spaces. And two, to demonstrate the common architectural design strategy of part to whole or room to building.�

“The objective of this exercise is to continue the study and creation of space by exploring the spatial relationships between plan and section. This process has two purposes.

One, to continue the simultaneous development of your path plan and space toward spatial and planimetric clarity. And two, to create a path with a spatial sequence that is proportionally related to its plan and section.�

“The objective of this exercise is to design and make a new base/ground plane for your path, entrance, and tower. Your new base plane should clarify, strengthen, and reinforce the unity between your path, entrances, and tower, not destroy it.
