The art of adjusting #
Following the passage of the bond issue last March, construction is underway across the district. PHS began renovations during the summer. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin later this semester. Words by|
As she sat down to answer questions, math and art teacher Rebecca Lomshek swept crumbs and dust from previous art projects off her table. Her classroom, a clash of utilizing the left and right sides of the brain in harmony, has artistic expressions and mathematical equations visible throughout. Most students know Lomshek for regularly wearing an apron covered in paint, accompanied with a smile. Before stepping foot into her classroom, senior Maddy Emerson already felt welcome.

“I knew I was going to be okay in her class, Emerson said. Due to the construction at the beginning of the school year, Lomshek’s classroom was without air conditioning (AC) for the first four days. The most challenging part of not having AC, according to Lomshek, was dealing with the heat. “It bothered me knowing that it was warm, she said. “One morning it was 82 degrees at 7:30. In the mornings, that’s pretty hot. Despite the inconvenience, she stayed positive for her students. “It was nice that they brought fans in to try to alleviate [the discomfort].
After teaching without AC for two days, Lomshek sent an email to other teachers, and was able to use their air-conditioned classrooms. She thought ahead for her classes, utilizing “art on a cart to transport supplies to the rooms she would be using. Since then, Lomshek’s AC unit has been replaced and is now working sufficiently. On any given day, she can be found by the kiln. Glaze and clay buckets at her side, she examines projects turned in by students, appreciating the artistry she fostered in her classroom.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK To ring in the new school year, The Booster Redux has developed a fresh new look. Alongside renovations and new administration, we felt it was fitting to update our student newspaper as well. We will now print on the first Friday of every month to avoid conflicts with scheduled breaks. Our classic print edition will be in a four-page format. In doing so, we are eager to take risks to improve the visual aspects of the paper. For each issue, we will experiment with themes and more reader-friendly
concepts known as alternative story forms. These design concepts will allow us to condense a story and discover a unique way to convey it through graphics and pictures. To keep up with our technological environment, we are transitioning toward online content. Our revived website will feature interactive stories, student highlights, activity updates, multimedia and much more. You can also follow along with the school’s activities on our social media. All of these changes were made with
our readers in mind: to captivate our audience and provide relevant and intriguing information. We hope you continue to support student journalism as we undergo changes. Please send any questions, comments or concerns to studentpub@usd250.org. Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Maddie Baden, Gina Mathew and Kali Poenitske The Booster Redux Editors in Chief

Meet Mr. Bressler,
Meet Mr. Staley,
head principal
Assistant principal and activities director
Q: Where did you attend college? Kansas State University.
Q: Where did you attend college? Drury College in Springfield, MO.
Q: How long have you been an administrator? This is year 18.
Q: How long have you been an administrator? This is my 15th year as an administrator.
Q: What made you want to come to PHS? The opportunity to help drive change to make a good high school a great high school.
Q: What made you want to come to PHS? I was eligible for retirement in Missouri, but I felt like I still had energy and a passion for what I do to continue to do it. The more I drove over here, the more I liked the community, so I ended up applying for the job.
Q: How are you going to support the culture of PHS? Being positive, being present, listening, giving students voice. Because it’s your high school. It’s not mine. It doesn’t belong to your teachers. It belongs to students. I want Monday to be the best day of the week. I really do. Does that mean people aren’t going to love Fridays? No. People are still going to love Fridays, but I want Mondays to be like “I’m ready to go back to work. I’m ready to go back to school, or “I want to be here. That is going to take a lot of work, a lot of people. But, the people are in place, so we can make this happen. Q: What are you plans for the upcoming year? My job this year is to ignorant and to ask a whole lot of questions. I’m learning. I have to learn the culture, I have to learn the history, I have to learn traditions. It really can’t be my plans. It’s gotta be our plans. Q: What was your former mascot? I’ve been a cardinal, a cougar, a wildcat (I’ll always be a wildcat), wildcat, wildcat, cardinal, beaver, spartan, lion, colt, panther, dragon. Q: Favorite place to eat in Pitt? I like Pichler’s Chicken Annie’s. It’s always been my favorite. Q: Favorite family activity out of school? Playing ball with my kids. Now, we’ve got a lot of area so we play a lot of catch. We play some wiffle ball.
Q: How are you going to support the culture of PHS? I plan on supporting it by learning about it first. This first year, I want to be a positive influence on the culture here, on the students, the staff, my coaches, even the community. Q: What are you plans for the upcoming year? I would like to make this school a great place for all of our students, not just athletes. I want to make it a place they want to come to. I want them to feel like they are welcome here because they are making me feel welcome. I already feel like I’m a Pittsburg Dragon, and I’ve only been here for a few months, so that’s what I want to give back. Q: What was your former mascot? I’ve been a panther, a yellow jacket, a bulldog, a tiger and now a purple dragon. Q: Favorite place to eat in Pitt? I love Mall Deli. I like Chatter’s because I live over there, and their food is really good. I like El Caballo. Gusano’s. Oh, Napoli’s. That’s a really good one. I don’t know if I could pick one favorite. Pittsburg has incredible food. Q: Favorite family activity out of school? By far, my favorite thing to do is spend time with my granddaughter. Her name is Alexis. She is my only grandchild and she’s five. She lights up my world. If I don’t have my family, I like to play golf. Information Compiled By |
