Located at 200 SE Martin Luther King Blvd. in Portland, Oregon, The Salvation Army Industrial Home building is located within the East Portland Grand Avenue Historic District, an area recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Although the building looks like a continuous structure, it is actually composed of two buildings joined together. The south end of the building was originally constructed in 1893 and was taken over by the Salvation Army in 1913. In 1930 the Salvation Army enlisted architect Frederick Manson White to design the northern addition. This addition can be discerned from the west elevation by the transition of arched windows on the south end of the first floor to the rectangular storefront windows on the north end. The building also features the original party wall inside as part of the building’s structure. The Salvation Army used this building as it’s headquarters, as well as, the location of their store, sorting facility, and some residencies until 2010. After this time, the building stood vacant until 2013

Flexibility Productivity Guiding principles
he way in which people live and work is continually changing. This has never been more true with regards to how people find work and support themselves in this place in time. The job market, especially for young professionals, has often been unpredictable and unreliable. This, along with advances in technology and changing priorities in finding a balance between work and life, has created a shift in popularity towards self-employment. It is now easier than ever to start your own business and become your own boss. Despite the empowerment, the self-employed can also face challenges in the everyday operation of business that are very different from work methods in larger companies. One such challenge is finding a place to work. In search of alternatives to the home office or working at coffee shops, a new model for office design has emerged. These open-plan, communal work spaces are referred to as coworking offices.
The idea of the corner office has been a long been associated with the traditional hierarchical office structure. It stood as a symbol of status and power within a company and was highly sought after. However, in a coworking office, this model of corner offices is unnecessary and undesirable. My concept was to create a series of communal lounges and seating areas that democratized the corner spaces. On each floor this corner becomes a destination and takes full advantage of the large windows and views. The spaces also follow the activity gradient through the building culminating in the Lookout Lounge on the top floor.
ReThink is a proposed coworking office space for Portland, Oregon that will feature a variety of work space types to support a diverse group of working individuals. This project provides the perfect platform for the investigation of the contemporary office space in the context of shared spaces and diverse user groups. It will also look at the challenges of creating productive spaces for individuals, as well as promoting collaboration and interdisciplinary thinking. The project also seeks to test different scenarios for retail, and a food oriented establishment, alongside the ReThink coworking community and how these elements will further support the goals of the project.

Angle based off of shape of atrium pulls elements through both sides of the building.
I took this opportunity to reimagine ReThink’s identity in the form of a large hand painted sign, which would have been common for the era. It also takes inspiration from the original Salvation Army shield that had been painted on the wall and preserved by the later addition.

The creation of the atrium through the center of the building provided for the opportunity to expose and restore the north facade of the original building. The large wall also offered the chance to create a strong vertical connection through the building.

Furniture + Materials When shaping the approach and philosophy to the materials selection in this project, the main design principles played a large part. Productivity, flexibility, and health and wellness rely heavily on the contents of a space to support them. All three elements are closely linked and translate into aesthetic, functionality, and environmental factors when looking at materials and FF&E selections. In order to support a work environment that bridges that gap between a traditional office and a nontraditional work space, it was important to establish a general aesthetic that takes elements from both ideas and combines them into an eclectic mix that would attract the desired user group. It was important to me that all the elements did not feel out of place in an office environment, but that they also did not look too contemporary and corporate, which can make a space not feel inviting. To create a more welcoming space I looked to inspiration from the home, especially elements that had a vintage feel. This two design ideas come together to create a mixture of spaces that are both comfortable, but also feel like a place to get your work done.
