Polarize Zine Issue #12 Wow it’s issue number 12! Honestly, I had so much more I wanted to shoot for this issue. It was strategically placed to release so that I could shoot as much as possible and not have a small issue. Here we are now with two artists shot and a small issue. Things happened. I don’t want to use that as an excuse but in reality I realized that this year might be the year I don’t shoot many shows. I’m saddened by it, but I’ve also shot so many incredible artists in my 5 years of doing this professionally. I’m still shooting bands on my bucket list, like Bring Me the Horizon who are in this issue. It’s going to be slow, but I’m not quitting this zine or music photography any time soon. If you’ve been with me this long, thank you!
Enjoy! -Emily Kovacic

The anticipation in the room was at a high in the moments leading up to Bring Me the Horizon entering the stage. They were a couple minutes late from when the crowd expected them to come on, but the moment that they did the whole room turned upside down. The band hadn’t played in Pittsburgh since 2014 as an opener on A Day to Remember’s Parks and Devastation Tour. To say that this show was anticipated was an understatement. The crowd had gotten antsy and began to chant for the front man, Oli, and then eventually turned into a full “Bring Me” chant. The band opened with MANTRA and continued into the song “House of Wolves” from their 2013 album Sempiternal. The set was filled with high energy and an intense circle pit as the band performed songs from their most current albums, That’s the Spirit and Amo. After the 15 song setlist the band was off the stage at 10:15pm, which left fans like myself, a little disappointed that they didn’t perform longer. However, I can’t even fathom words to how incredible this band is live. Oli’s clean vocals are impressive as well as the full dedication from the band. They even added dancers to their set which is something I never expected, but it worked well with their set. I’m intrigued as to what else the band will continue to do with their new sound.

MARIANAS TRENCH SUSPENDING GRAVITY TOUR 27

Those of you who don’t know Marianas Trench is one of my favorite bands. This was only their third show ever in Pittsburgh. Once again playing Mr. Small’s in Millvale, which is a few minutes outside of downtown Pittsburgh. This was my second time photographing them and I had a game plan of how to do it but of course I ended up mostly shooting the lead singer Josh again. There’s no photo pit so it’s me convincing the crowd that I won’t take their spot the entire time, move as much as possible, get my shots, and get out of the front. With their newest album Phantoms I expected the set to have a ‘haunted’ theme and feel to it. They didn’t disappoint with interludes telling a story that matched the album. The set was highly energetic with Josh even going in the middle of the crowd to perform two songs. The band mostly performed songs from their newest album, but with additional notable favorites like “Haven’t Had Enough,” “Cross My Heart,” and “One Love.” The band ended with “The Killing Kind”, which is also the final track on Phantoms. It was an incredible showcase of Josh’s vocals. Never disappointing during the entire set belting out every note flawlessly.
