boardwalk retreat

Academic: Individual Fall 2018 Type: Artist Retreat 4,100 sq ft, 1 story Software: AutoCad, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator

The artist retreat is inspired by boardwalks; structures that allow us to hover above water and land in dierent environments. The building is situated in a secluded valley on the shoreline of the Sangamon River. Guests experience the forest and river from a new height with minimal impact to the environment. The entrance to The Boardwalk is a twenty minute walk from the Music Barn on the south end of Allerton park. Upon entrance, guests see a wooden ramp extending down towards the river and the main building that contains the studio, dining area, and porch. The main path continues back away from the river into the small valley where the dwellings are placed. The angles, floor plans, and windows of the buildings are positioned to maximize views of the river and forest while maintaining privacy from the main path. The Boardwalk is designed to provide a unique modern experience to a less frequented area of the park. The gardens and mansion are on the north side of the river, and with only one bridge to cross it, the artists’ retreat will serve as a new attraction in the south end of the park.

cloud market

Academic: Individual Spring 2018 Type: Farmers’ Market/Community Space 2000 sq ft, 1 story Software: Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop

Cloud Market provides a space for gathering and shopping that will benefit small businesses in the Champaign community. The front half of the building is a large open space to be used as a farmers’ market while the back section is used for offices, storage, and other private spaces. The market gets its name from the glass facade that reflects the sky on a sunny morning. The glass has a slight blue tint to it to give visitors the feeling of being in the clouds and connected to the outdoors. The facade details mimic airplane contrails in the sky and draw visitors eyes upward towards the clouds.

Longitudinal Section

The main entrance, also the tallest section of the building, is located on the East side to allow the most light to enter the building during its busiest hours. Several side entrances allow for more light, additional access points, and a separate entrance to the office space. There is also a courtyard where people can rest, hangout and enjoy the outdoors. The courtyard provides a break between the public and private spaces. Within the cloud market, there is a feeling of openness and a connection to the outdoors. When people shop at a farmers’ market, they know they are getting the freshest food from local farms. The openness of the facade brings the idea of farm to table together.

wave house

Academic: Individual Spring 2018 Type: Residential, 800 sq ft, 3 floors Software: Rhino, Illustrator

Inspired by the waves of the ocean, the wave house mimics the shape and movement of water. The home is split into three levels that share one large glass wall facing the ocean. The three floors are joined by the wave shaped roof and set back into the sand slope. Upon entering, guests are welcomed into the main living area and kitchen with an open floor plan and vaulting ceilings. One floor up is the bedroom and bathroom. On the lower level is a private study and library. All floors have an expansive view of the ocean. Each floor opens to a balcony whose shape completes the shape of the wave and extends over the ocean.

HERE apartments Academic: Individual Spring 2018 Type: Existing 23-story student housing Software: Revit, Photoshop The HERE Apartments, a residential high-rise for student living at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, were reconstructed using BIM technology. The original AutoCAD drawings for 308 E. Green St. were referenced to design the building in Revit.
