Letter from the editor Over the years it has been women that have been discounted as a source of inspiration, especially for other women. In this issue I will be exploring how women have overcome stereotypes, and how our idols of the female world have led to an empowered generation. A generation that celebrates women, and appreciates their sexuality as an object of beauty rather than prey. The past few years have seen the birth of many heroines into stardom and, ultimately, the public eye. From campaigns backed by Cara Delavigne and Beyonce, to drastic changes in style, and the freedom to embrace our body types, we have created a society more capable of acceptance. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not to discount the journey we still have yet to embark on. Heroine is here to showcase the best experiences found from real women and men on how inspiring people have helped us all through difficult times, helped them discover who they are and show that us Females are a kick ass gender.

11 ways that my mum is my hero

Being a daughter raised by a single mum is a powerful thing. Being raised by a mum who wasn’t always baking cookies and wasn’t plastered with a smile every time you walked through the door is a powerful thing. Mothers are often looked at in such a way that they’re human emotions become invisible- don’t cry in front of your child, don’t swear, don’t drink too much, don’t lose your temper with the biological father, don’t introduce them to a new partner too soon.. growing up with a mum who made mistakes is the best thing that could have happened to me. Now as a young adult, I have respect for my mum like I will never have respect for anyone else in my life. Now I’ve felt heartache and grief and despair, even if only a fraction of what she has felt over the years, I cannot imagine having to prioritise a tiny person (or even any person) above those

feelings during my darkest hours, forcing yourself out of bed everyday, to put food on the table, to pay bills, to be productive when you could easily lay in bed and sob your life away and never return to normality again. Being a mum is 24/7 unconditional and for that I couldn’t be more grateful. When I face difficulty or something feels impossible, I remember that shit out of money and shit out of luck mother and daughter team that we were back 21 years ago and I think “if she got the both of us through that, then I can get myself through this.” I haven’t always been the most endearing child a mother could have asked for, especially not in the aforementioned darkest hours, but a mum is a friend for life not just through rose tinted glasses, so now.. I am her friend for life. Here are 11 reason that this woman is my hero.

1.She survived my teenage years, and thanks to her, so did I. Not sure about you guys, but I was one super bitch from the age of thirteen until I was at least eighteen. At sixteen, when you could look her dead in the face and call her every name under the sun for not letting you go to this thing that everyone else’s mum was letting them go to, yet she still loved endlessly and provided efficiently. At 21, if my mum and I have an argument, I’m on her lap snivelling like a baby for forgiveness in 5 minutes! 2.She supported me when nobody else did. Leaving a job? No worries. Leaving a boyfriend? Go for it. Dropping out of college to start again? Sure. Getting a tattoo? Nice one. There isn’t anything that can phase this woman, her only baby getting a nipple piercing, having pink hair or temporarily having no direction in career or education! If I’m making the decision for myself and think it’s the right thing to do, she’s 100% behind me. 3.Speaking of boyfriends, she put up with bozo after bozo! There are not many people in life that would grit their teeth and smile for months, sometimes years, to accommodate a partner in your life that they hated. Mums do. Yeah, even that weird one (understatement!) you had at fifteen who you went crying in the rain for and even that cocky older guy you met at a festival at 19 who really was the biggest clown of all (massive understatement). She’s watched from a far, subtly guided and given you all her best advice and look! Here you are, with a nice one (Hopefully!) 4.There isn’t a day she isn’t proud. Achievements, big or small, it’s great to have someone that will always be your number one fan. The day I learned to perfectly poach my own eggs, she text me to tell me how adult she thought I was, likewise when I fixed a hole in my jeans. When I successfully got myself an internship, she sent me flowers. Even when you feel like your efforts are going unnoticed, they’re not.

5.She’s always around for a chat. Sometimes you just need to rant and not everyone is “available” to hear your rambling thoughts about why he isn’t answering you or why the girl at work gives you funny looks or whether it’s possible your house mate is eating your cheese, whatever the issue is she’s always there to hear you out and somehow makes sense of it all too! 6.She encourages me out of my comfort zone. If it weren’t for my mum, I wouldn’t have a passion for travel like I do, and sometimes, even if it’s painful for her to push you, she puts you on that plane to California on your own because she knows it’s something you have to do for yourself, to thrive. Mum is the perfect person to get you out of your comfort zone and trying new things. Naturally you tend to trust your mum but even in times of doubt, she’s still the one who gives you that extra little push you need! 7.The way she doesn’t even need to ask if I’m ok. Any slight waver in your voice, a difference in text message replies, she just KNOWS that something is up and you start to wonder why you ever tried to keep secrets from her as a teenager. She very clearly saw right through you all along. Thanks for humouring me mum. 8.Can’t live with her but also, cannot, definitely cannot, live without her. I know that if my mum and I were ever trapped in a house together again, we’d kill each other. Weekends are fine, Christmas vacay is fine. But any longer than that and we’d fight more like sisters. But also, when we’re apart, I wanna speak to her every day and sometimes if she’s not close enough for a hug I listen to songs that make me think of her on my way to work just to brighten my day. 9.When she said “no” or “don’t do that” she said it for a reason. AND NOW YOU SEE. It’s just like the Spice Girls song “so now I see through your eyes, all that you did was good” and you’re so glad you listened (for the most part!). Not only this, but

she has also brought around opportunity to quote a spice girls song in an otherwise quite meaningful way… 10.I’m her best-friend too. Honestly. My mum once told me a story that a year or so after my dad left she had an opportunity to go out, a rare occasion since she had a 2 y/o to look after, and whilst bathing me before handing me over to the babysitter she had asked me, because she didn’t have any one else too ask, “does mummy look fat in this?” 2-3 y/o me is sat in the bath like “Yes mummy! You look lovely and fat!” Not quite the answer she was looking for, guess. But she asks for your advice for reals now you’re an adult and she trusts your opinion because all along you’ve been her best-friend too, you know her better than anyone else, and (sometimes) you have the right answer. 11.She gave so much of herself to ensure I had everything. She was never too tired to get out of bed in the middle of the night for you, she always had to clean up your sick, poop and blood, she never said “cba” when you needed her to cook your dinner after a long day of work, she loved you even when you had chicken pox or some other gross crap, she spent her hard earned cash on your school uniform only for you to leave it in the PE changing rooms or come home with someone else’s. She gave up her social life to have you, and probably some of her aspirations. She gave you the happy baby voice when you were young even though she could have been sobbing with exhaustion five minutes before you woke up from your nap and she does all the other things on the list.. mum, you are my best friend. Why Strong is the new skinny

The world as we know it means that going to the gym and lifting weights has primarily been just another part of the manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world, including protein shakes, grip gloves, meal supplements, pre work out, post workout and so much more that women, of course, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand. But actually, we do understand and in the last few years women have stepped up to plate to challenge men in the weight room, and we love it.

For a long time, where women and their appearance are concerned we’ve been told that the skinnier the better, as the once reigning queen Kate Moss, said “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” but in recent years, the likes of Beyonce and the Kardashian sisters, have stormed in, stolen the throne and shown us the way. This figure in the limelight seems to be the ultimate goal, with large breasts, a tiny waist line, and a bum big enough to qualify for its own postcode. A clever girl knows that anything close to this can rarely be achieved without eating the right things and lots of hard work and “perspiring” at the gym (because women don’t sweat, obviously). However, a sensible girl knows that working hard at the gym, sweating your ass off like you should, eating your protein as well as the rabbits food straight from the hutch should be all for you and taking care of the glorious body that protects your insides, to feel healthy, happy and most importantly, to feel strong. The misconception that weight training makes women big still exists (false, cupcakes make women big, weights make women toned and sexy…) and it is evident that within the girl world, this is the myth that has women run frantically screaming away from the weight room in the gym and straight towards those cardio machines. The fear of becoming stronger and having more muscle than the average man should be no concern of ours, but a concern of the men that cannot keep up. Women should be focused on the fact that bicep curls, dead lifting, and squats are doing our girly muscles the world of good and quite frankly, putting

us one step closer to equality by demolishing the idea of gender roles with in the gym. After all, what could possibly be so bad about being strong, toned, healthy and happy? Nothing, is the answer. So pluck up the courage, take a leap of faith into the world of weights. Get some help from reliable sources and make sure that whatever you’re lifting or pushing is done correctly so as not to hurt yourself. In fact, you could even sooth the egos of boyfriends, brothers or guy friends and ask them if they have any tips or ideas to help you on your way to a stronger you. There are loads of healthy smoothie, dessert and dinner recipes available online if you want to really step up your game. Making “gains” like a lad doesn’t have to be like a lad at all, make it suit you, enjoy it and love the results!

Who is your icon? When asking people ‘Who is your icon?’, the response I received was extremely varied. From fictional characters, rock chicks and style icons the word ‘Icon’ seems to be very ambiguous. Not that theres is anything wrong with that, everyone has there own way of looking at things! I love the diversity in which people are inspired by women and how we can all empower each other. If it be the attitude you have, the career you decide to choose or the problems they help you overcome, women really are an amazing source of inspiration. I have assembled 6 of my favourite very personal responses to this question, to show the array positivity these people have bought to others and can or have maybe bought to you.

Beyoncé is an artist that I have admired since day one. From Destiny’s Child to Dream Girls and her solo career, I have always looked up to her as a role model. Beyoncé has made so many achievements throughout her career. She has been nominated & presented with almost every music award and has broken several records. To name one she is currently the female artist who has spent the most weeks at No. 1 in this decade.

feeling so motivated and inspired, like I could conquer anything I set my mind to. My favourite quote from the Queen B herself is “the more successful I become, the more I need a man.” To me this shows she is a strong and independent woman, yet still understands the value of having a partner there to support her along her journey. Despite the fact she has made her own career, Beyoncé promotes the importance of having a strong & healthy family. I think this is one of the main reason I admire Beyoncé so much, she stands for strength amongst women whilst maintaining the traditional value of the importance of family, and I think this is something women of all ages can, and should, look up to.

Beyoncé promotes Unlike other artists, the importance Beyoncé has never been caught smoking, drinking, of having having sex, using drugs etc. like many other a strong & artists have. She is a pure talent and that is the sole reason for her fame and healthy family success. This is one of the many reasons I have always looked up to her, she has always been a good influence. Not only did she inspire me to want to sing, but to perform which lead me into what I do to this day. I was lucky enough to watch her perform in her most recent tour ‘Lemonade’ and I have never been so overcome with emotions than when I first heard her sing live. I walked away from that performance

Courtney Love was the front woman of 90s grunge riot girl band Hole which was a crucial part of me growing as a teenager. ‘Hole’ was the soundtrack to my youth and was my introduction to feminism which has become a big part of who I am today. She wrote songs about being against slut shaming and rape culture. She taught young women all over that it was ok to be angry.

And she did it all while shouting about women’s rights, trials of motherhood and grieving for her late husband Kurt Cobain who took his life two weeks before ‘Hole’ went on a worldwide tour.

Courtney faced massive media backlash, she as labelled ‘witch, slut, junkie and ugly’ instead of ignoring the hate she rocked up to an awards event wearing her insults on her body painted in red lipstick in a iconic act of reclaiming herself and the words that were used to shame her.

“No more boring suits or pantyhose, no more trying to be somebody I’m not!” -Elle Woods

Everyone needs a role model, some might say their big sister or their best friend, or even a famous celebrity. Nope, not me. I’d say a fictional character. In the film Legally Blonde, aged just 22, Miss Elle Woods faces rejection, heart break and is stripped of her dignity all on account of being blonde. No one takes the poor girl seriously. Her long term boyfriend won’t marry her, Harvard Law only accept her for “diversity” reasons despite having the necessary GPA score and her new boss makes a pass at her, even though by this point in the movie she’s his best intern. Four out of 10 women in the UK are blonde and we’ve all been the butt of a blonde joke every now and then, we even admit to having “blonde moments” and that’s fine, we own it! But how many use it to their advantage? We’re often labelled bimbos, associated with the colour pink, we contrast considerably badly with fake tan and god help you if you own a Chihuahua. But Elle Woods, makes a dutiful attempt to show us that despite being a pink loving, bubble gum chewing, sparkly shoe wearing, Chihuahua owning type of gal, she no longer needs the approval of dumb

Actually, she realises she can take control of her own life just the way she is, she doesn’t need to tone herself down in any way, she can still achieve grades, she can graduate, get an awesome job in which she excels, in a “serious” male dominant profession and she can find a guy who respects the hell out of her, all whilst being Elle. Once she gets wind of her selfworth, there’s no putting the lid on Elle’s jar. That’s why Elle Woods, the fictional character from Legally Blonde, is my role model. Selfworth is the most important thing a woman in her 20’s can have. You have to go through the run of the mill to figure it out, but when you get there! By god, it’s liberating. Having standards for yourself and what you put out into the world is an amazing place to start, but being sure of what you expect from others in your life and choosing where to make exceptions and why, is invaluable. Iris Apfel is my icon. The ninty five year old is the fiercest chick on the block. Hailing from New York, she was an interior designer and general fashion icon before she retired in ’92. Although she never really retired from being iconic. Her & her husband launched a textile firm Old World Weavers in 1950 and she consequently travelled the world in search for all things beautiful. She worked with nine presidents during her career on restoration projects at the White House as an interior designer to the rich and famous. Three years ago she also had her very own documentary called ‘Iris’, all about her (obviously) and what she gets up to now retired. She’s essentially a mega babe.

Lady Gaga is possibly the most iconic superstar of the 21st century. She has achieved more in her 8 years in the music industry than most people do in their whole career. She has sold over 27 million albums, 146 million singles worldwide, won 6 Grammys, 3 Brit awards, 13 VMA’s and a golden globe. She holds 12 Guinness World Records, Time magazine named her Most Influential Artist and Forbes listed her among the World’s Most Powerful. Lady Gaga for me is such a big influence in my life because of the things she stands for, the way she stands for them and the way she uses her very public voice to promote positive things. In her career, she has joined forces with various charities when currently it’s very easy for celebrities to keep quiet and to avoid doing things that would align them with certain issues. However, Lady Gaga hasn’t done that. She has been an outspoken activist for LGBT rights worldwide. She has spoken various times spanning her career about equality and freedom. She has used various methods to express her support of the LGBT community including the infamous meat dress

Now it’s 2017 and the world is slowly becoming a better place and I think that celebrities like Lady Gaga seeping into mainstream media are to thank for the slow burning acceptance of things that people do not understand. Mental health issues are something that I’ve had to deal with for most of my life and it’s been extremely difficult to maintain a level of motivation, inspiration and effort. Recently Gaga spoke about dealing with PTSD since the age of 19 and showed the world that even the biggest stars need a day off. When you see someone on the level of Lady Gaga being able to drop her pride to talk about real issues that affect real people, it’s inspiring and gives people the ability to look inward.

Gaga is a very important component in my existence because she shows the world daily that you don’t have to fit into a box to be successful and you don’t need to constantly compete with people. If you’re better than you were yesterday then you are improving as a person. She is her own boss and she is one of the most powerful women, not only in the industry but in the world. It inspires me to see someone that is so clearly a misfit slaying the world, and not caring what a single person thinks. It was difficult growing up as a gay male in a world where staying in

I believe the world needs more positive people that are willing to speak out when there is injustice but they need to be people that can have fun and kick back when they want to. I hope to one day inspire someone the way she has inspired me because I owe a lot of the way I am to her. True artists are hard to come by but once one comes along they will live forever in the people that they touch and the legacy they leave behind. Back to Black was the first album I tried to buy aged 12, despite knowing I was too young. Amy Winehouse has been an icon of mine and to her generation ever since. Her distinctive deep expressive contralto vocals and vintage edgy fashion she influenced many young people, including myself and still does to this day. The singer’s achievements include, winning five Grammy Awards in 2008. Making at that point history, the most wins by a female artist in a single night. In addition to being the first British woman to win five Grammys, she won Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

It gets better. Trust me, everything you do to your body now will show in years to come. Be natural, don’t wear make up, and embrace your puppy fat, it will go very soon. When you get older body image isn’t as important as you think it is now. Of course we all want to look our best and of course we all want to look like Victoria Secret models but I can assure you there are thousands of people out there that will watch you walk past and wish they looked like you. Confidence is the sexiest thing you can wear, and will make you a very happy young lady What makes you feel most empowered as a women? Having my girl mates around me.
