BARRY BUCKINGHAM & TRACEY LEAKE MOBILE LIBRARY TEAM

It can be a very active role. Keeping the vehicle presentable and on schedule can be demanding, but it’s made so worthwhile by the knowledge that the service we are providing is very much appreciated by our lovely customers. I would like to thank them for their staunch support of the Mobile Library Service!

VIVA

Given that your role is to bring Vivacity’s library services to people throughout Peterborough and the surrounding areas you must have a great idea about what’s happening across the city. Do you feel there has been an increase in the variety of culture and leisure events taking place in recent years?

Do your families like to go to local Vivacity venues?

TRACEY

Apart from my partner, I have no family locally but I encourage friends to use our library services (or else)!

TRACEY

I love gardening and last year was my first year on an allotment in Orton Waterville. I even managed to win some prizes for my potatoes and onions at the village show. I also play carpet bowls for the ‘Norman Cross’ team. I enjoy walking and cycling in our beautiful local countryside too.

BARRY

I love camping and spending time in the great outdoors! I am also a volunteer instructor for the local Air Cadets.

07

BARRY

I like to visit the Museum with my wife and young son, and there is always something different to see there. And now the new Coffee House is another good reason to step inside.

VIVA

Other than reading, do you have any favourite hobbies that you like to do in your spare time?

vivacity-peterborough.com

VIVA

VIVA

What would you most like readers to discover about the library services in their city?

Photo: John Moore

TRACEY

Most definitely. There is so much hard work put in by staff and volunteers alike, which means the enthusiasm has rubbed off onto the public and I feel peoples’ interest in what’s going on is rising all the time. The opportunity for learning new skills and taking part in different activities for young and old holds no bounds — from making a coracle boat at Flag Fen to walking on water at the Regional Swimming & Fitness Centre!

TRACEY

It’s about more than just borrowing books. There is a huge diversity of knowledge available at your fingertips, from tracing your family tree to learning how to use computers. Plus look out for special events, especially for the kids, during holidays.

Turn to page 24 to follow the day in the life of the mobile library service.

GUEST EDITORS

Lovely to meet you and thank you for being guest editors for us! Your roles must be very busy travelling around all the areas you cover every day?

Held in the historic heart of the city centre and the stunning surroundings of the Cathedral precincts, this is one of the city’s most popular events. This is a living history extravaganza for all to enjoy – unlike anything else in the city! This year’s Heritage Festival Big Weekend features over 300 costumed re-enactors from some of the country’s top living history groups, giving you a chance to meet all sorts of colourful costumed characters from our past, from Iron Age warriors to World War II airmen. Our main arena will occupy the Cathedral Square with a packed programme of live period music, falconry displays and spectacular battle displays by the reenactors. Over 20 local history societies, community groups and local historic attractions put on displays to show off the best of our local heritage. Our period market is held on the main Cathedral green,

including displays of historic crafts and trades alongside a chance to go shopping for an historically themed gift. Our craft fair on Church Street provides other shopping opportunities, or you can relax with the family in our Children’s Zone — an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games and activities. Plus don’t miss our fringe events running 15 — 30 June.

NEW FOR 2013 The theme this year is science and innovation, with a roadshow on St John’s Square in association with the Natural History Museum. Try some hands-on science activities and come face to face with life sized dinosaurs! Come and meet the Renaissance inventor, with life-sized recreations of some of the remarkable inventions of Leonardo Da Vinci, including a chance to try and get his helicopter to fly! Explore different parts of the Cathedral, with ‘taster tours’ of parts of the building not normally open to the public We’re looking for volunteers for the Festival! “COULD YOU LIVE WITHOUT YOUR MOBILE, TELEVISION OR THE INTERNET FOR A WEEK?”

Could you live without your mobile, television or the internet for a week? Could you imagine travelling back in time to experience life during the Bronze Age — living in a roundhouse, cooking over an open fire-pit and making everything by hand? That’s what a team of Living Historians will be doing at Flag Fen for six days: cooking, working and living as our ancient ancestors would have done 3,500 years ago!

As well as their daily tasks, we’ll be setting them challenges to try their hand recreating different ancient crafts and technology, such as casting bronze weapons and making prehistoric clothes. It will be a fascinating experience for visitors to come and see how the group are surviving the experience, and even help them in some of their tasks.

For our range of space- themed special events visit vivacity- peterborough.com

A particular highlight will be that the group will be working over the week to try and make a replica of one of the recently discovered Must Farm Bronze Age boats.

STILL is an exhibition of work made by artists in relation to the economics, politics, ownership and contested nature of global water supplies in the era of climate change. In our everyday lives we take water for granted as a supply from the tap, a place for leisure and as a basic human right. Over the next 40 years, predictions estimate that water will be as contended as oil now is in the post-industrial and developing countries. The artworks broadly touch on our relationship to one of our most important commodities.

From the award-winning theatre company that brought you the 2011 smash hit musical ‘Britain’s Got Bhangra’, Rifco Arts and Watford Palace Theare present ‘Break The Floorboards’ — a new dance drama. A new restaurant is set to open at the Key Theatre, called Café Clarkes, on the 24 May. The company who own Clarkes on Lincoln Rd and The Banyan Tree will take over the catering at Key Theatre bringing new pretheatre dining offers and modern British food with locally sourced produce. 2013 sees Key Theatre celebrate its 40th Anniversary and there has been considerable focus on refreshing and revitalising the theatre. Revisiting the restaurant offer has also been part of the re-focus in a bid to create a fuller, more vibrant cultural offer for visitors to the Key Theatre.

The mobile library parks up next to the Post Office at this busy stop, where the Post Mistress, local mothers and tots are regular customers — it has become a staple for villagers who enjoy a friendly chat with locals whilst collecting and dropping off their books.

The landscaped surroundings of Burghley House provide a beautiful backdrop for the mobile library at this stop. The customers at this stop include the porter and his partner, people working on the estate and visitors.

Tracey and Barry are an essential part of these local communities, setting off at 9am Monday through to Saturday, visiting schools, village halls, churches and pubs across the area in outlying villages such as Ailsworth, Helpston, Northborough, Thornhaugh and Wansford.

Most residents in the city live close to a library, with 10 across the city including Bretton, Dogsthorpe, Eye, Hampton, Orton, Peterborough Central, Stanground, Thorney, Werrington and Woodston, however some residents find the mobile library an easier and more local option.

The mobile library provides access to both adult and children’s books to thousands of customers over the course of the year, as well as CDs and DVDs and audio books, providing an important lifeline to those living in rural areas, sheltered housing and caravan parks. Barry says, “We have had regular customers over the years and have seen their children grow up with our books.” Tracey explains, “It’s great knowing what a difference we make to people’s lives young and old, the mobile library is so important in bringing not only books to local residents, but a lovely sense of community.” Turn to p6 to see Tracey and Barry as guest editors

LIBRARIES FEATURE

6 May — 10 June

Price FREE Peterborough Archives will be showing a selection of rare 18th century books from the Gentleman’s Society, Peterborough’s first library. The Gentleman’s Society, launched in 1730, was the brainchild of local schoolmaster Rev. Timothy Neve, who set up the society for local men to meet and discuss topical issues and advances of the time in the sciences, arts, history and archaeology. The Society’s aims were expressed as the ‘improvement of literature and promotion of friendship and good neighbourhood’ and new members were required to present a suitable book as part of their induction. The Gentleman’s Society was launched at a time of tremendous scientific discovery — in the Age of Enlightenment — that saw them correspond with leading scientists and thinkers of the day such as Hans Sloane from the Royal Society and William Stukeley from the Society of Antiquaries in London.

The society collected an impressive range of botany samples and books throughout its history and in 1820 they changed their name, more fittingly, to The Peterborough Book Society. Archives show that the society observed scientific experiments and attended talks on botany and biology where samples would be collected and then kept at St. John’s Church. In 1733 these included ‘an ostrich egg, a hoggfish, 2 tygers teeth, tygers nose, 3 tygers claws, a tail of a fish, and boar’s tusk. In a bottle several little scorpions and centipedes, a sucking fish and 2 cockroaches.’ By the end of the 19th century membership was low and in 1899 the Society was dissolved with the remainder of the books being transferred to the public library service. Regrettably some of this library was sent for salvage in the Second World War when paper was desperately required. Some 200 of these original items, including the original minute books of the Society are now housed by Peterborough Archives in Central Library.

MEDITERRANEAN CRIME EVENING WITH ANNE ZOUROUDI

Meet author Anne Zouroudi, creator of Greek Detective, Hermes Diaktoros. Anne’s highly-acclaimed series of novels are set amongst the beautiful landscapes of Greece, where time has little meaning, and the pressures of modern life are easily forgotten. Anne will be talking about the latest novel in the series The Bull of Mithros. Anne was the winner of the East Midlands Book Award and has been nominated for the ITV Crime Thriller Awards. “A delight… a cracking plot, colourful local characters and descriptions of the hot, dry countryside so strong that you can almost see the heat haze and hear the cicadas.” The Guardian

How did Peterborough look after the poor in the days before the welfare state, pensions or benefits?

Get ready for Father’s Day with this fun one-hour craft and storytime event.

Local historian Stephen Perry takes you on a fascinating journey, exploring the life and times in Peterborough’s earliest workhouses which were feared by many, with harsh conditions and few liberties.

Children get to make a special hand-made present and a Father’s Day card to take home for the special day — all equipment and materials provided.

Stephen explores how the workhouse system gradually changed over the course of the 19th century and the effect this had on management and the inhabitants.

History of the Lido The Peterborough Lido was opened by the then Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor Arthur Mellows in 1936 and this unique building, incorporating elements of Art Deco design, was designated a grade II listed building in 1992. The name ‘Lido’ was borrowed from the famous sand island in Venice and the 30s saw a huge boom in popularity with the introduction of paid-holidays. These huge outdoor swimming complexes were promoted as the perfect way to boost health and offer family entertainment. It is one of Peterborough’s much-loved local attractions receiving over 15,000 visitors last year.
