Heritage Festival 2017 programme - Introduction

One big weekend 300 re-enactors 3,500 years of history The Peterborough Heritage Festival is a unique chance to experience 3,500 years of history. Held in and around the stunning historic surroundings of the Cathedral precincts, this is the city’s most popular event, attracting over 37,500 people in 2016. This year’s theme commemorates the 375th anniversary of the start of the English Civil War, seeing Parliamentarians and Royalists battle in a full blown re-enactment of Woodcroft Castle. Meet colourful costumed characters from our past, from Bronze Age settlers to World War II landgirls. Relax with the family in our Children’s Zone - an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games and activities in the Cathedral Cloisters. Go shopping in our period market which is held in the precincts, including displays of historic crafts and trades as well as a chance to buy historically themed gifts, alongside an exciting taste of unusual produce, food and drinks to sample or buy. Inside the Cathedral will be a whole variety of activities, including the popular return of the big bear drop ‘Ready Teddy Go!’ Plus, there are free taster tours; special tours of the rooftop spaces, as

Keynote Lecture Professor Kate Williams 17 June at 7.30pm Queen Victoria: The First Royal Rebel and her Struggle for the Throne Fun for all the family

In this beautifully illustrated talk, Dr Williams uncovers the truth about Queen Victoria, showing how she was a wild, vibrant girl, with passions that often got her into trouble. Her mother, the Duchess of Kent was determined on power and she would do anything to achieve it. The two struggled for the throne - in what became the biggest mother-daughter battle in history. As Dr Williams shows, Victoria’s childhood was unhappy, but it formed her as a great Queen. She grew up determined, able to hide her feelings, and with a penchant for hard work.

Civil war dressing up box Cavalier or Roundhead, we’ve got a costume for you! Try on the gear and see what suits you.

We aim to make the Heritage festival as accessible and friendly as possible. If you have any concerns please speak to a member of staff or a festival volunteer - they will be recognised by purple festival t-shirts. As the festival takes place in Cathedral Square and around the Cathedral, most of the terrain is smooth and fully accessible. Into the gardens, the ground is flat but onto grass. Adverse weather may affect the firmness of the ground in the gardens but won’t affect the hard-standings. The main performances or re-enactments will take place in the main arena on Cathedral Square in front of the Guildhall. There are also performances on the far side of St John’s Church and into the Cathedral Precincts. Pathways reach across the whole of the city centre making access throughout the day easier.

Viewing platform There will be a designated viewing area next to the main arena for any visitors with mobility/accessibility requirements. To access this area, please contact any member of festival staff.

Peterborough during WWI St John’s Church Local historian, Any Cole, will be in St John’s Church over the weekend along with the current exhibition including photographs of veterans from this country and Burma (Myanmar), and memorabilia.
