The Big Ballet A ballet like no other ever seen in the Uk, The Big Ballet features an ensemble of 16 Corps de Ballet dancers, each weighing no less than 16-stone and united in a common cause - not to lose a single pound. Yes, this truly is a heavyweight spectacular of weighty elegance and humour. From Russia’s Ural mountains, the region from which Tchaikovsky hailed, The Big Ballet was formed in 1994 and set out to deliberately and, above all, selfconfidently challenge accepted social standards in a world where the pursuit of slenderness and beauty seems obsessive. The dancers courageously and imposingly prove that
grace, elegance, charisma and nimbleness is not simply for the “thin”, proudly presenting their own voluptuous, yet surprisingly sinuous and flexible figures. These ladies enchant their audiences with different classical and modern ballet pieces in an hilarious comedy show full of fun and astonishing choreography, proving that you shouldn’t take life, or yourself, too seriously. Enjoy the show from Amande Concerts, it will both surprise and thrill you. The Stage said: “Not to be missed.” Good advice! Friday, March 11 at 7.30pm TiCkeTS £19.00 (£17.50 concessions)

Dancing at Lughnasa The setting is summer in 1936, where in a cottage in the remote Irish village of Ballybeg, the five Mundy sisters live a simple life with their recently returned brother Jack, a missionary priest, seven-year-old Michael and a wireless set called Marconi. Years later, the now grown up Michael looks back at that fateful summer when the knockings of change finally caught up with the Mundy family. We see the sisters laugh, cry, and dance in their boots in the foothills of Ballybeg, fighting to stave off a change to their lives. The play paints a life-affirming portrait of these brave women
following their loss of love and opportunity, played out with dark humour, raw energy and tenderness. Dancing at Lughnasa is Brian Friel’s Olivier and Tony award-winning play which was also made into a film with Meryl Streep and Michael Gambon. Lillies On The Land This is a truly remarkable and sparkling piece of theatre which celebrates an extraordinary episode in Britain’s history - the work of the Women’s Land Army during World War Two. This delightful, and often deeply touching, play charts the personal journeys of four women who sign up to become Land Girls, determined to work endless, backbreaking hours on farms across the country in a bid to do their best for the War Effort. But, how will these women, hailing from all different walks of life, torn from their families and bereft of all basic home comforts, deal not only with the hardships of farming life and the pressures of war, but also with being
outsiders in new surroundings? Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the skies are just what it takes for these girls to get through. It is based on real Land Girls’ memories, with period songs. Monday, February 28 to Wednesday, March 2. Nightly at 7.30pm, 2.30pm matinee on Wednesday. The Caucasian Chalk Circle It is Bertolt Brecht’s most famous work, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle is also regarded as one of the most important 20th Century pieces of theatre. It was first presented by the National Theatre in 1997, and now Frank McGuinness’s version of this morality masterpiece is staged in Blackeyed Theatre’s inimitable fashion, combining original live music, stunning design and

Stephen K Amos Fresh from a busy year filming his own BBC2 comedy series, The Stephen K Amos Show, the laughtermaker is headed back to The Cresset for a not-so-quiet night in with all his friends in Peterborough. Stephen, as always, will be serving up more melt-in-the-middle, heartfelt humour to warm the very cockles of your heart. Stephen is of Nigerian origin and for many years was a regular feature of the London stand-up comedy circuit. His fortune began to change when he took the Edinburgh Festival Fringe by storm in 2006 with his open, frank and personal show All of Me. From there he became hugely popular
at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Great Debate. Stephen performed to great acclaim on the Alternative Stages at the Reading and Leeds Festivals last year bringing his unique brand of humour to fans old and new alike. The Sunday Times critic said: “Effortless comedy from one of the country’s strongest stand-ups, whether riffing with the crowd or delivering broad, big-grin gags.” The Guardian writer simply said: “Amos is dynamite.” If laughter’s the best medicine, Doctor Amos will see you now! Micky Flanagan The 2007 if. comedy nominee, the almighty Micky Flanagan, is bringing his new show Out Out, to Peterborough. It’s been a great 18 months for Micky – he appeared in Michael McIntyre’s Road Show and Mock The Week on BBC1, his recent Radio 4 series What Chance Change? was a hit with listeners and critics alike, and he is one of a handful of comics to perform their own Comedy Central special. In 2010 he also sold out his two Bloomsbury Theatre shows at record speed. Tirelessly funny, Micky draws on his East End background as he ruthlessly deconstructs the Cockney myth with razorsharp observational wit.
As a former fish packer and window cleaner he tells a comic tale of a working class upbringing where ‘alphabetti spaghetti’ is a luxury and a bottle of Blue Nun the height of sophistication. His star finally exploded in the comedy firmament a couple of years ago with a brilliantly observed Edinburgh Fringe show about his rise from working class Herbert to middle class ponce, and being caught awkwardly between the two. His status was ‘crowned’ recently with an appearance at the Royal Variety Performance. Saturday, February 12 at 8pm. TiCKeTS £15

Disney’s Beauty And The Beast Westwood Musical Society is returning, from a year out fundraising, in triumph by presenting something new and exciting at the Key Theatre. It is a full scale production of the much-loved Disney classic Beauty and The Beast and all the family will love it. Audiences will enjoy the best known songs from the legendary film, including Be Our Guest, in what promises to be a visual and dancing treat that will have everyone singing along, and all the favourite Disney characters will be featured. Beauty and The Beast is sure to be a half-term treat. It tells the familiar story of a handsome, but conceited, prince treating a beggar woman
badly. But, she turns out to be a beautiful enchantress and she turns the pompous prince into a beast, while the castle staff are all transformed into objects to do with their profession or personality. To break the spell the prince must learn to love before a magical rose loses all of its petals. Tuesday 22 to Saturday 26 February. Nightly at 7.30pm with 2.30pm matinees Wednesday to Saturday. TiCKeTS Tues evening: £10.00 Wed-Sat matinees: £10.00 (£8.00 concessions) Wed & Thurs evenings: £11.00 Fri & Sat evenings: £12.00 Family tickets (Wednesday to Friday evenings): £40

Our House It is going to be sheer Madness when the eagerly talented young students from Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton, return to the Key Theatre. Yes, they will be going nutty, but in the nicest possible way when the hits of legendary group Madness form the soundtrack to their production of Our House. It certainly marks quite a change from their very successful presentation of Arabian Nights at the theatre last year. Our House is a very nice house indeed, because the show won the prestigious Olivier award for Best Musical. The production tells the
story of a teenage lad called Joe and the surprising consequences of a decision he makes on his 16th birthday. Madness are, of course, the legendary British ska/pop band from Camden Town who were at the forefront of the 2 Tone reggae-influenced sound of the late 70s and 80s. They produced a string of hits and the show features toe-tapping numbers like Our House (of course), I’ve Been Driving In My Car, Baggy Trousers, and It Must Be Love. Our House was a huge hit in the West End. Thursday, March 16 to Saturday, March 18, nightly at 7.30pm. TICKETS £8.50 (£6.00 concessions)

Peterborough Arts Cinema
Peterborough Arts Cinema has another great series of films lined up for the John Clare Theatre, in Central Library, Peterborough. Thursday 13 January, at 7:30pm: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2009, Sweden): Michael Nyqvist plays Michael Blomkvist, a reporter facing an unjust prison sentence for criminal libel. Before his jail term starts, he is hired by a wealthy industrialist to solve the mystery of a niece who disappeared 40 years before. Thursday 20 January, at 7.30pm: District 9 (2009, USA/ S.Africa): Not too far into the future, a huge, lumbering spaceship shows up over planet Earth and stops there in the sky, hovering over a 21st-century modern city. Progressive liberal politicians have no choice but to allow these poor creatures out and let them live in the outskirts of the city, which they turn into a no-go crime slum called District 9. Thursday 27 January, at 7.30pm: London River (2009, UK): The film is set exactly five years ago in the aftermath of the 7 July suicide bombings in London, but its two central characters are simple, middle-aged people living alone
and far away when the news of the disaster reaches them. Thursday 3 February at 7.30pm: Mother (2009, Korea): Bong Joon-ho’s Mother is a suspense thriller, a gripping psychological study and a witty subversion of the forensic-procedural genre. Thursday 10 February, at 7.30pm: Made in Dagenham (2010, UK): The film stars Sally Hawkins as Rita, confident and forthright, as the ordinary working mum who finds herself elevated to the position of striker-spokeswoman. Thursday, 17 February, at 7.30pm: Winter’s Bone (2009, USA): The action takes place in Missouri, where teenage Ree is effectively the only sentient adult in her household: her mother has become catatonic with depression and her younger brother and sister need looking after. Thursday 24 February, at 7.30pm: The Illusionist (2010, France): Belleville Rendezvous’s Sylvain Chomet eschews the 3D bandwagon and delivers a hand-drawn animated treasure. Tickets: £4 for members, £5 for non-members. More info on www.peterboroughartscinema.co.uk
