Taking a well-known traditional story (you know which one!), this spell-binding play for young children follows a magical path through the woods.

Welcome to Tumblewater. Not that it's a very welcoming place - unless you're an undertaker or an umbrella salesman. Caspian Prye, the twisted landowner, controls everything and everyone; even the police. Into this world stumbles Daniel Dorey, a fearless orphan armed only with his wits and a satchel of spinechilling stories.

Tickets: £10 (£5 concessions)

Freehand Theatre creates a memorable and reassuring journey with its delightful use of puppetry, colour and specially composed music. Listen to the song of the red box, watch a forest grow before your very eyes and find out how an endearing bear gets in on the action! Suitable for children aged 3-7 www.freehandtheatre.co.uk

Tickets: £10, Key I.P: £8.50

Tickets: £20 (£18 concessions)

Fresh from a four-week run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Eastern Angles present this startling new theatre piece.

Directed by Robin Herford (The Woman in Black), Tom Kempinski’s multi-award-winning play returns to the stage with a major UK tour. Resonant with echoes of the life of cellist Jacqueline du Pré, Duet for One leads celebrated concert violinist Stephanie Abrahams (Haydn Gwynne (Peak Practice, Drop the Dead Donkey) through a series of highly-charged encounters with her doctor, Alfred Feldman (William Gaunt (Sergeant Cork, Next of Kin), as she is forced to re-evaluate her life and face a truth too difficult to comprehend.

Written by East Anglian playwright Joel Horwood, acclaimed for his work with the Lyric Hammersmith, Nabokov Theatre Company and the West Yorkshire Playhouse, I Peterborough is a no holds barred depiction of growing up in an overspill town. Lulu is a big bloke, with a dodgy wig, high-heels and delusions of celebrity. Teamed with his son Hew, both Peterborough born and bred, the two men form a dysfunctional double-act. With sounds from the seventies and eighties and a darkly comic cabaret-style theatre performance, the family’s lives are laid bare. Contains strong language

“The London based Jiving Lindy Hoppers worked themselves and their unbuttoned audience into a fine lather ... their collective performances manage to retain the wholly spontaneous, improvisatory, uninhibited spirit of swing dance in its heyday”

Kathryn Tickell is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria. This magical show is based on interviews and recordings Kathryn has done over the years with family members and the shepherd musicians from whom she learnt, including mouth organ player Will Atkinson and fiddler Willie Taylor. Martin Carthy & Dave Swarbrick Sunday 21 October at 7.30pm Tickets: £14.50 (£13.50 concessions) For more than 40 years, Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene. Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence on the folk scene as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group. Having worked alongside other leading musicians such as 16

The result was a new era of English instrumental folk music and a new approach to folk music altogether.

There are those who watch and listen, who tap a shy finger to the

melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat, still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories. Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the Classic Big Band Sound of the 1940s.

Sunday 28 October at 8pm Tickets: £19 (£17 concessions) Following last year’s incredible sell-out show, we’re thrilled to welcome back Amir Sharma with his show Jackson – Live in Concert. Amir’s portrayal of Michael Jackson in his prime has to be the most vocally and visually accurate tribute to the King of Pop to have ever toured UK theatres. Amir is joined on the stage by a cast of musicians, singers and dancers who work their way through all the hits. He’s got the look, the moonwalk and above all, the voice! His

renditions of Thriller, Beat it and Billie Jean are truly sensational. Michael Jackson is not only remembered as one of the most influential artists of all time, but many of today’s artists have been inspired by his iconic style. His career spanned nearly five decades of music, and he was continually at the forefront of popular music. Jackson Live in Concert features all-live vocals, fabulous costumes and of course, all the signature dance moves we all associate so fondly with the undisputed King of Pop. Pure MJ!

Richard DeDomenici Popaganda

The Yeomen of the Guard

Friday 26 October at 7.45pm Tickets: £10

Tickets: £14

Sit back and relax to the dulcet tones of Richard DeDomenici's songs that aren’t real, facts that are funny, and jokes that don’t rhyme, in his new show Popaganda. A jet lagged litter picker of the world's cultural landfill, watch DeDomenici throw western civilisation at the wall, caution to the wind, and see what sticks. Like a can of tomato soup Popaganda is condensed, easily digestible, and likely to stain.

“Clever, tremendously funny, powerfully political, and unafraid to be accessible. Think of comic activist Mark Thomas crossed with TV satirist Chris Morris, and you have something approximating Dedomenici.”

Wednesday 12 – Saturday 15 September Nightly at 7.30pm, Sat matinée at 2.30pm G&S lovers will be delighted with a new presentation of this eternal favourite.

The Sunday Herald

The Yeomen of the Guard arose from the nostalgia surrounding Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and the re-opening after restoration of the Tower of London. The grandeur of the Tower is a fitting setting for this colourful operetta set in Elizabethan times and regarded by Gilbert and Sullivan as the best thing they had done.

“Beautiful acts of absurdity highlighting more serious issues. Frighteningly Effective.”

Colonel Fairfax is falsely accused and under sentence of death. His accuser stands to inherit his fortune unless, with the help of The Lieutenant of The Tower, he can arrange to thwart him.

The Guardian

There is some stunning choral and solo music to accompany a story full of romance and intrigue which is touchingly human and funny, yet with a cruel and dark streak to it.

Tickets: £8 (£5 for under 16s)

Spend an evening with Roger McGough as he presents his new book of poems As Far As I Know. Hilarious and surreal, he is a poet of many voices. Menace and melancholy there may be, but with plenty of McGough's characteristic wit and wordplay too.

Enjoy an evening of poetry and comedy with John Hegley as part of Peterborough’s first We Love Words Festival of Poetry and Literature.

THIS IS A FREE EVENT, BUT TICKETS MUST BE ORDERED IN ADVANCE FROM THE BOX OFFICE

Roger McGough: As Far As I Know Saturday 8 September at 7.30pm

Newly elected President of the Poetry Society, Roger McGough has been honoured with a CBE for services to literature and the Freedom of the City of Liverpool for good behaviour. For adults & 14+. Followed by book signing.

John Hegley:

John Hegley has been performing poetry and music since 1970 when he started busking in Hull. Since then, he’s produced numerous books and performs all over the UK. He’s a true master at bringing poetry to life. Follow the adventures of Monsieur Robinet and of his dog, Chirac. There is some love interest which appears rather one-sided and the extraordinary tapping of a television set, all of which make this a highly entertaining experience for the whole family.

The final stage, nail biting stage of this competition, held annually since 1998. The challenge is to find a local poet to hold the honorary title of Peterborough Poet Laureate for one year. Throughout the year the Poet Laureate will work with The John Clare Trust, Vivacity Culture and Leisure Trust (including the library service) and the community to identify opportunities to make creative writing and particularly poetry part of the life of the city, chronicling special events and celebrating the City of Peterborough. vivacity-peterborough.com 27
