SUMMER 2017 / MAY REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY PRESENTED BY SEABRIGHT PRODUCTIONS

William Shakespeare’s Long Lost First Play (Abridged) TUES 9 MAY • MAIN HOUSE Acclaimed stars of the West End stage, the Reduced Shakespeare Company, are back with another barnstormingly irreverent and breathtakingly hilarious celebration of our cultural heritage – as seen through the eyes of three Americans wearing trainers. In a better-late-than-never nod to Will’s 400th anniversary, the bad boys of abridgement present this ‘new’ play by the man himself, as discovered in a Leicester car park! All of the Bard's greatest characters and plots feature in this single work of dramatic genius, that he later decided to turn into 37 separate plays - in a move that Hollywood studios would have admired, if they'd been around in the 16th century. The play, mercifully abridged by the RSC from its full hundred hour running time to a more palatable ninety minutes, embarks on its debut UK tour following world premiere seasons at the renowned Folger Shakespeare Library and the Edinburgh Fringe.

“You’re an octopus. All mixed up, like me. One leg something, and one leg something else.” Three women have been called in for assessment. Sara looks sort of Asian. Scheherazade sort of Middle Eastern. And Sarah is sort of white. But how British are they? Fresh from a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe and a sell-out transfer to London’s Theatre503, Octopus is a post-Brexit satire that explores what it’s like to be treated as a foreigner in your own land… and the power of punk.

It is 54 years ago since the band known as Brian Poole & The Tremeloes recorded their first record. Now, the singers on all of their hit recordings, are reunited. Featuring Brian Poole, Len ‘Chip’ Hawkes and Dave Munden together again, performing hits such as Twist And Shout, Do You Love Me, Silence Is Golden, (Call Me) Number One, Suddenly You Love Me and many more. Backing will be provided by hit recording stars Vanity Fare for this great evening of nostalgia taking you back to the swinging sixties.

Enter the good looking and newly eligible Ronny – a quiet and withdrawn young British man who is here to scatter the ashes of his love. The Pawars have found a potential suitor to their quickwitted and resolute daughter Katrina, who is sharp, sassy and in complete control, until she learns of her parents intentions. What could possibly go wrong? Phizzical bring theatrical magic and an innate sense of fun to this accessible and delightfully ludicrous romantic romp.
