Twelfth Night Glee/Fever Here comes summer - and the return of the Key Youth Theatre Company in another superb sizzling musical treat. Last year, the team delighted with their version of High School Musical, and prior to that they appeared in the Broadway sensation, the hit musical Rent. This year the team turns back the clock to recreate one of their earliest hits with the return of Twelfth Night Fever! The show was part of a series of rock and roll Shakespeare shows adapted

by the Key’s previous and current Artistic Directors - Derek Killeen and Michael Cross. The first production, staged in 1996, won critical acclaim from audiences throughout the 90s with its re-telling of The Bard’s story of intrigue, disguise, cross-dressing, mistaken identity and love, all set to a backdrop of foot-tapping music, dazzling dance and loads of fun. This year’s version has been updated and is now called Twelfth Night Glee/Fever! paying homage to the

sensational score of 70s hits with a touch of Glee! The production will be directed by Paul Crosby and features a young cast of current KYT performers strutting their stuff. Be sure to book your tickets for the hottest summer show in town! Wednesday 17 to Saturday 20 August, nightly at 7.30pm. Saturday matinee at 2.30pm Tickets £12 Children/students £9 Key I.P. £10.

Longthorpe Tower Take a rare opportunity to see inside one of Peterborough’s historic treasures as Vivacity teams up with English Heritage to open Longthorpe Tower for the weekend of Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September as part of Heritage Open Days. Longthorpe Tower is the remains of a Medieval fortified manor house which was built in the 13th century by the Thorpe family.

But, for Heritage Open Days weekend, Longthorpe Tower will be open to the public. The period atmosphere of the building will even be enhanced by the appearance of Medieval characters who will bring the building to life for all the family to enjoy.

Inside the tower, spectacular medieval wall paintings have been discovered. These are officially the finest discovered in a domestic setting in Western Europe.

Find out what the Lord of the Manor is having for dinner, learn to write with a quill pen with guidance from a monk from the Abbey, and see the Barber Surgeon for a cure, or learn a military drill with the tower guards.

The site is owned and cared for by English Heritage and can usually only be viewed by appointment.

The tower will be open from 10am-4pm and admission is FREE.

John Cooper Clarke Living legend is an over-used term, but it surely applies to John Cooper Clarke, alias the Bard of Salford. The unique rapid fire delivery of his poems, alongside razor-sharp gags and tales of the absurd have created a career lasting more than 30 triumphant years. He first toured with Be-Bop Deluxe on their 1977 tour and has never looked back. During the punk era he provided perfect support for the likes of the Buzzcocks, Joy Division, The Fall and others, which earned him the mantle of

the “Punk Poet.”He has enjoyed chart success and his collection of verses, 10 Years In An Open Neck Shirt, is a constant poetry bestseller. Not many people know it, but he was also the original Honey Monster in the Sugar Puffs TV ads. Today he is a UK festival favourite, but you should grab this chance to see him up close and personal at the Key.

Saturday, 24 September at 7.30pm Tickets £15.00

We are looking for a support act to perform on the bill with John Cooper Clarke at the Key Theatre. All applicants must apply to key.theatre@vivacity-peterborough.com by 1 August. For more details, visit www.vivacity-peterborough.com

The Vagina Monologues Three well-known faces from top TV soaps are coming to the Key Theatre in a new production of this hilarious and moving play about women and their sexuality. Part stand-up, part cabaret, part serious drama, there is a relaxed and informal relationship between the audience and the three performers. It has been a huge hit around the world and productions are currently running in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Rome. Soon it will be in Peterborough too! Over two million women (and some men) are estimated to have seen one of the 3,000 performances and 25,000 fake orgasms since The Vagina

Monologues first had people gasping “yes, yes, yes” for more. It will certainly make quite a change for actresses Wendi Peters (who played gobby Cilla Battersby in Coronation Street), Tiana Benjamin (sexy Chelsea Fox in EastEnders) and petite Louisa Lytton who has been in both EastEnders and The Bill. The Sounds of Simon It is hard to imagine now, but Paul Simon was an unknown young folk singer when he wrote The Sound of Silence. When he recorded it with his pal Art Garfunkel and added electric instruments to his own acoustic guitar backing, it became the first of many hits for the duo. Now this show pays tribute to the wonderful music of Simon and Garfunkel. Lose yourself in

nostalgia with classics like Mrs Robinson, The Only Living Boy In New York, Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard, and some of Paul and Art’s solo hits too. It adds up to a memorable musical event. Thursday, 22 September, at 7.30pm Tickets £15.00 (£13.00 concessions)

T.Rextasy Forty years ago a record created such a stir that it started a whole new trend in pop. It was Glam Rock, and the pulsating rocker that explosively created it was Get It On by T. Rex. ACARI Comedy Stage Hypnotist So what can you say about an entertainer who puts some of his audience members to SLEEP? If his name is ACARI, then the answer is simply - A LOT! This charismatic performer from Dundee will have you in hysterics from watching him put his volunteers through their paces during his Hypnotic Comedy Show. ACARI invites members of his audience who wish to volunteer to come and join him on the stage. He then proceeds to hypnotise them, giving instructions on what he wants them to do. After several of these exercises, he weeds out those participants who are either faking it or not responding.

Then, the real fun begins with the volunteers’ reactions to ACARI’s suggestions becoming more and more hilarious. At one point in an ACARI show all the volunteers believe they are ballet dancers (members of the Russian ballet no less) performing Swan Lake. Later they act as if they are jockeys in the Grand National. During the show they become convinced they can hear their favourite song from what they believe is a radio (their shoe in reality) and sing it to the audience. Come along and discover his amazing powers for yourself - if you dare!

Jimmy Carr –Laughter Therapy Since the turn of the century, Jimmy Carr has been a ‘fun slinger’ of international repute and Laughter Therapy is his ninth touring solo show. It will be an evening of non-stop jokes, gags and banter. Just as Jimmy’s legion of fans would expect. After all, if you’ve got a sick sense of humour then laughter is probably the best medicine! learned to bite his waspish tongue (at times) to be just about safe enough for mainstream television. But, it is on stage that Jimmy really breaks loose and unleashes his dark, deadpan, delivery on his audience. You may be in stitches, but can anything crack Jimmy’s cool?

The recommended dose is to take one brand new show annually (repeat, annually).

Make sure you see him at The Cresset when the shackles are off and his demonic one-liners can take on an evil twist as he sends up everyone and everything that is currently in the news, or on Twitter. Jimmy will be as politically incorrect as he wants, and that’s the way fans love him.

Peter’s Ground ”What are you doing? Are you making something? What is it? I can’t see it. I can hear it though. Do I need to see it? What’s all that noise? It sounds familiar. Wait, is that me?” This year, Tom Fox of You’re In Control Theatre Company recorded the different sounds that surround our city. Using these sounds, Tom tells the hidden stories that we get to

see, but never hear. This amazing production will open your ears! Peter’s Ground comes from the acclaimed company that brought us This Is Peterborough, Somewhat Free, Improvised Musical and Walkabout. Monday, 12 September, at 7.30pm Tickets £5

The Tragedian This is the story of The Rise to Fame of Edmund Kean - drunk, actor and genius - which won awards at the Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton Festival. On the 26th of January, 1814, Edmund Kean makes his Drury Lane debut as Shylock and changes the history of British Theatre forever. He’s a grieving, drunken, megalomaniac, but he is poetry in motion. Prodigal’s The

Tragedian is everything you don’t expect from a solo performance or historical biography. The Stage critic called it: “Astonishing. A Dickensian Masterpiece.” Wednesday, 28 September, at 7.30pm Tickets £10 Concessions & Key I.P. £8.50

Megetsi Two Gents Productions creates work from a contemporary Zimbabwean perspective. Performing in their signature township style they produce shows that are both intimately minimalist and physically engaging. In their latest production, Tonderai Munyevu and Denton Chikura take on a multitude of characters to evoke life in contemporary Zimbabwe.

After inflation, mass exoduses and a newly constituted Government of National Unity, two men in overalls try to make sense of it all using nothing but a bucket and an old piece of carpet. It is a fascinating amalgamation of stories and monologues. Monday, 3 October, at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 Key I.P. £8.50

Phoenix Rising Following a successful run at this year’s Adelaide International Theatre Festival, accomplished stage, television and film actor Paul Slack brings his “Powerful one-man tour de force” to the Key Theatre Studio. In a series of animated snapshots, D.H. Lawrence reflects on the personalities and events which shaped his early years. Phoenix Rising explores the duality of

Lawrence’s tormented life from his birth to the death of his mother. It was a period he so vividly fictionalised in Sons and Lovers. Phoenix Rising is powerful, literary and a colourful portrait of an extraordinary artist at full throttle. Tuesday, 4 October at 7.30pm Tickets £10 Key I.P. £8.50

Acid Bath Murders It’s not every day that you get a chance to chat to a notorious killer, so In Conversation with an Acid Bath Murderer is an unusual treat. So listen in as Nigel Fairs delves into the life and horrible crimes of John George Haigh who murdered at least six people between 1944 and 1949. He thought he would never be caught because of his meticulous

disposal of the bodies. The nation was gripped by the trial of the self-confessed ‘vampire killer.’ Now you are invited to join him in his workshop in Crawley (where he dissolved his victims in acid), and then witness his final moments as he waits to be hanged.

The Pit And The Pendulum It is the horror story to end all horror stories and this new play by John Goodrum is a chilling theatrical experience. The Edgar Allan Poe tale has never been beaten for its pure terror and nail-biting suspense, and it is a mystery with a twist in the tale. It tells the dripping-with-dread story of William Trevelyan who sets out to rescue his young wife from the clutches of the wicked and lascivious Hellfire Club. But, he little expects to find himself their captive, tortured by the nightmare of a living grave, never mind the nameless terror of a fathomless pit. Not to mention the inevitability

of the swinging pendulum with its razor-sharp blade! The play stars Mark Homer who is best known for his role as Tony Hills in EastEnders. He was last at the Key in the acclaimed chiller The Signalman in 2009. Monday 31 October to Wednesday 2 November. Nightly at 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on Wednesday. An Unsettling Evening Look out for goosebumps and the hair rising on the back of your neck when four ghost stories from supernatural writer M. R. James come to life. These tales of the unexpected will certainly unsettle you with their twists, thrills and shocks. In Canon Alberic’s Scrapbook an English amateur archaeologist gets a scare on a visit to a remote French cathedral. As night falls he hears echoing, mocking, laughter and a pale and nervous verger shows him a book that suggests an unpleasant possibility as to the culprit. In Number 13, a travelling academic staying in Room 14 at a Danish hotel is amused by the tradition of having no rooms numbered 13 ... until the room beside him becomes

occupied by more than the salesman booked in to Room 12. More chills ensue in Whistle And I’ll Come To You My Lad when a schoolteacher finds an antiquated whistle while poking about in a ruined Templar Abbey. Blowing the whistle summons ... something! In Casting The Runes a magazine editor refuses to publish disturbing articles from a self-professed master of the occult and then receives a scary message complete with Runic symbols. Is someone or something following him? Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 November, nightly at 7.30pm Tickets £15 (£12.50 concessions) Key I.P. £12

Macbeth Following the success of their Hamlet, the highly acclaimed Icarus Theatre Collective presents a bold and exciting new production of Shakespeare’s most bloody and fear-filled tragedy. The barbaric undercurrent pulses through this emotive production which gets right to the evil, beating heart of the Bard’s bloodthirsty story. Unrivalled on the battlefield, Macbeth is rewarded with rank and favour by a grateful king. But, with each enemy Macbeth butchers his lust for power takes a more menacing grip until he ferociously seizes the throne. The rest as they say, is history. As Macbeth discovers to his cost, violence breeds violence, and a

reign born in blood quickly spirals out of control as Macbeth’s own actions return to destroy him. This Icarus Theatre Collective production lives up to their fearless and dynamic reputation and goes straight for the jugular. It blends traditional and inventive physical theatre techniques, original live music with gothic design. Thursday 3 to Saturday 5 October. Shakespeare Schools Festival The Shakespeare Schools Festival is a UK-wide initiative working in partnership with the National Theatre and the National Youth Theatre. Its aim is to challenge the preconception that studying Shakespeare is difficult, dry or dull through a combination of teacher training, workshops and student performance in a local professional theatre. The aim of the charity is to promote articulacy, confidence and empowerment in our young people, through a growing appreciation of these timeless plays. Family and friends are invited to celebrate an evening’s professional entertainment

with four youthful half-hour productions of different Shakespeare plays. Just how much the youngsters enjoy it can be seen in comments from a partcipating school teacher last year who said: “We enjoyed it so much. If you could have heard them cheering each other on the bus home it would have made your heart glad.” One student commented: “Before I did this I thought Shakespeare was boring, but now I think the stories are incredibly exciting.”
