Peterborough Heritage Festival 16–30 June
The Peterborough Heritage Festival for 2012 develops its own identity! Held in the historic heart of the city centre and the stunning surroundings of the cathedral precincts, this is one of the city’s most popular events: a living history extravaganza for all to enjoy – unlike anything else in the city. This year’s Heritage Festival big weekend takes place on 23 and 24 June and features over 300 costumed re-enactors from some of the country’s top Living History groups.
Visitors can encounter living history encampments in the precincts and meet Roman soldiers, Saxon warriors, Medieval knights, English Civil War Roundheads and Napoleonic Redcoats. A packed programme will include live period music, falconry displays, and spectacular battle enactments. See Vikings in battle, hear the crash of musket fire from the Civil War soldiers and get involved as Medieval Knights enrol children from the audience! More than 20 local history societies, community groups

and local historic attractions put on displays to show off local heritage, and there will be a period market on the main Cathedral Green. For the first time, there is also a Children’s Zone with jesters, storytellers, games and activities and a Victorian travelling cabinet of curiosities. There is also a packed programme of ‘fringe activities’ around the city. For more information and a full list of events, look out for the Heritage Festival brochure.

City Gallery
Dreams Made Manifest City gallery is proud to present Dreams Made Manifest as the second exhibition of the year. Halima Cassell was born in 1975 in Pakistan, brought up in Manchester and now lives in Blackburn, Lancashire. Halima’s varied, multi-cultural background is tangibly present in her work. Fusing her Asian roots with a fascination for African pattern work, and a passion for architectural geometry, Halima’s work is intense, yet playful. Substantial, yet dynamic.
And compelling in its originality. Halima concentrates on simple forms as the basis of her work in order to maximise the impact of the complex surface patterns in combination with heavily contrasting contours. This approach provides her with the tools to create the compelling drama and playful dynamism that characterises her work. An Artist’s Talk by Halima will take place at City Gallery during the exhibition, further details of which will be published on the gallery website at vivacity-peterborough.com Dreams Made Manifest. Halima Cassell. At City Gallery 1 June to 27 July.

Reduced Shakespeare Company in The Complete World of Sports (abridged) The “bad boys of abridgement” are back following a highly successful run in New York and a sell-out US tour of The Complete World of Sports (Abridged). In this exclusive tour ahead of the show’s West End premiere, the entire history of athletic competition is revisited in a marathon of madness and mayhem that sees the world’s great sporting events shrunk down to theatrical size. Who needs the Olympics? Among the questions asked: Is darts really a sport? What does NASCAR stand for? Why do Americans insist on calling a contest in which only they compete the “World Series?”
What about wife carrying, extreme ironing and bog snorkelling? Which is more boring - baseball or cricket? Who invented curling and synchronised swimming - and why are they in the Olympics? Whether it’s the ancient cavemen or the Classical Greeks, the Romans, the Elizabethans or the modern sports media, The Complete World of Sports (Abridged) brings you all the emotion, the drama, the scandal. In fact every sport ever played anywhere in under two hours! Let the games begin!
