Key Theatre
Key Theatre enjoys a Spring makeover If you’ve been to the Key Theatre in recent weeks you may have noticed some building work to the side and rear of the building. A £1m investment from Peterborough City Council has funded a major building project which will give the theatre some much needed new backstage facilities including dressing rooms, scenery storage and new offices. These exciting improvements are set to be completed later this spring, and as a result of these essential works, the theatre will be closed throughout January and February. But, fear not, we will be opening the doors
6
again at the beginning of March with a great new season of shows in the 360-seat auditorium and 94-seat studio theatre. As always, there will be a great selection of comedy, drama, music and dance and there’s sure to be something for everyone - see Page 32 onwards for more details. As part of the new season we will be offering some early-bird and group booking ticket offers for many of the productions. Call the box office on 01733 207239 or visit our website vivacity-peterborough. com for details. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Key Theatre very soon.

Museum & Art Gallery
Countdown begins to Museum reopening Excitement is growing as Peterborough Museum prepares to reopen to the public at the end of March. The museum has been closed for a year for a £3.2 million redevelopment programme, thanks to funding from Peterborough City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Vivacity, which has seen a major change to both the building and galleries. Improvements include stunning new exhibition galleries, a new cafe set in a Georgian drawing room, a new museum shop and education suite. Much of the work has been about restoring and showcasing this important
8
historic building which has been a Tudor mansion, Georgian town house, Victorian hospital, and the city’s museum since 1931. Its traditional Georgian appearance has been recreated while the rare Victorian operating theatre (one of the very few in Europe) will be opened to the public for the first time. A new gallery space has been created within the museum to tell the fascinating story of the building and people associated
with it over the centuries. There will also be opportunities within the new look galleries to interact with more of the museum’s remarkable collections and exciting new interactive displays. Sarah Stannage, Heritage Services Manager for Vivacity said: “The redevelopment will completely transform the museum as a heritage attraction for Peterborough. I can’t wait for us to reopen next Easter and to see the surprise and delight on our visitors’ faces when they get the chance to look around.” Visit vivacity-peterborough.com for more details.

English Heritage is handing over the day-to-day running of this 14th century property to Vivacity, Peterborough’s culture and leisure trust, who plan to increase the current opening hours and offer guided tours on the first Saturday of every month. Dickens 2012 Peterborough will be turning Dickensian in February! Dickens 2012 is an international celebration of the life and work of Charles Dickens, to mark the bicentenary of his birth. Dickens visited Peterborough on a number of occasions, to hold his famed ‘public readings’. In our main event on Dickens’ birthday, 7 February, local historian Richard Jones will be speaking on Dickens, in full costume, re-enacting the man himself, talking about his life and performing readings from some of his best known works. He will be joined by Stuart Orme from Peterborough Museum revealing Dickens’ many links to
Peterborough. You can even find out which well-known Dickens’ character may have been based on a Peterborough resident. For a taster of our birthday event why not meet Richard at various libraries around the city as he pops in to help celebrate National Libraries Day on Saturday, 4 February. Dickens Readings and Talk: Tuesday, 7 February, 7pm. John Clare Theatre, Central Library. Tickets £3 (£2 concessions) available in advance at the library. Meet the Dickens Re-enactor: Saturday 4 February: Bretton Library (10.30-11.15am), Orton Library (12-12.45pm) and Werrington Library (2-2.45pm). FREE

Meet The Gruffalo There will be great excitement and delight amongst youngsters in Peterborough at the news that they can meet one of the most popular of all children’s characters – The Gruffalo. The original book by playwright Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, has sold over 10.5 million copies since it was first printed in 1999. The Gruffalo has since won several prizes for children’s literature and has been a stage hit from the West End, via Broadway, to Peterborough’s own Key Theatre. Now The Gruffalo will be at the centre of a half-term special event at selected libraries. The story of what happens when
a quick-thinking mouse comes face-to-face with an owl, a snake and a hungry Gruffalo is sure to enchant all over again. And the really big news is that youngsters can visit selected city libraries and meet the Gruffalo himself. Youngsters will love hearing this wonderful story again and taking part in our Gruffalo events below: Friday, 17 February: Bretton Library (10-11am); Dogsthorpe Library (12-1pm); Werrington Library (2-3pm) Saturday 18 February: Orton Library (10-11am); Hampton Library (11.30am-12.30pm); Central Library (2-3pm) FREE

Twenty Years of the Key Youth Theatre One of the great landmarks of 2012 will surely be the 20th Anniversary of the super successful Key Youth Theatre project. That’s right, the biggest and best theatre group for young people in the Eastern Region really has something to celebrate. Set up in 1992 by the late Derek Killeen (Key Theatre Director 1992-2000), the first KYT production was Willy Russell’s Our Day Out, the perfect vehicle for a cast of professional actors and members of the KYT. The following year, Derek, along with Michael Cross, was looking for another show for the youngsters when Michael suggested some Shakespeare. But, Derek really wanted to work on a musical. Their fortunate compromise created a unique piece of theatre featuring a mixture of comedy and drama. And so, Peterborough was thrilled to find Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
had been transformed into Dream Nights! with a bopping, foot-tapping score of hits from the Swinging Sixties. It was to be the first of many rocking the Bard productions, including box office blockbusters Much Ado Ron Ron, Little Richard lll, The Merry Wives of Motown and the recentlyrevived Twelfth Night Fever! Many KYT graduates have gone on to become professional actors, singers, and musicians, thanks not only to the everpopular Summer Musicals, but the Key Youth Theatre weekly classes and the renowned Summer Schools and Easter Drama Workshops. The first KYT event this year will be the production of Journey To X in April (details on Page 36), then there will be the Easter Workshops and, of course, the Summer Schools. EASTER DRAMA WORKSHOP Running for one week
only, from Tuesday 10 to Saturday 14 April, this will be a fantastic opportunity for students to create their own production working alongside professional actors and workshop leaders, which will be presented to friends and family at the Key Theatre Studio on Saturday, 14 April. As it is the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens, his famous stories and characters will be the inspiration for the show. The workshops will take place at the Key from 9.30am-4.30pm. Price: £95 per child (£10 discount for each additional child). SUMMER SCHOOLS 2012 Week 1: Monday 23-Saturday 28 July; Week 2: Monday 30 JulySaturday 4 August. Price: £145 per week. There will be special offers to mark the 21st year. For an application form go to vivacitypeterborough.com and click the KYT link to Summer School

Our Country’s Good ”A play is a world in itself. A tiny colony we could say. And you are in charge of it. That is a great responsibility.” The setting is Australia in 1788. A boatload of disease and disdain spews onto a foreign shore. As the soldiers struggle to impose order on the outcasts of the Old Society, a benevolent governor seizes on the notion of a play. In the shadow of the gallows and the gum tree, the convicts gather and rehearsals begin for The Recruiting Officer. Based on real events, Timberlake Wertenbaker’s award-winning modern classic is an inspiring tale of the transforming power of theatre.
She based it on the celebrated Thomas Keneally book The Playmaker and it won the Evening Standard’s Best New Playwright and Most Promising Playwright awards in 1988. This is a major touring revival produced by the acclaimed Original Theatre Company following on from the success of their recent productions of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa and R. C. Sheriff’s Journey’s End.

A Bedfull Of Foreigners Forget the gloom of winter and get set to burst into spring with this hilarious trouserdropping, bed-hopping, laughter-raising farce. And guaranteed to put a great big smile on your face is the fact that it stars that larger-than-life, master-of-mirth, Damian Williams. The Dave Freeman play is set in a French village near the German border on the eve of a local festival. When Stanley and Brenda, who are on a motoring trip, successfully book a room for the night, they consider themselves lucky - but not for long! In less than an hour, Stanley finds himself (in Brenda’s absence) lowering an attractive, stark naked, girl from the window,
with the room’s radiator hanging from a rope near the ceiling. The arrival of Claude, the attractive girl’s husband, and his mistress, Simone, causes further chaos. But that’s just the start, before long almost everyone’s in the wrong bed as people dressed as nuns and monks rush in and out, while seductions and confrontations run rampant. Monday 5 to Wednesday 7 March. Nightly at 7.30pm, Wednesday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets All evening shows £16 (£13 concessions); Wednesday matinee £12. Key I.P: £9

The Birthday Party Back in 1958, The Birthday Party was a young Harold Pinter’s first full-length play. Today it is one of his best known, most celebrated (leaving some critics eating their words) and most performed. It is simply a modern masterpiece and a brilliant demonstration of how comedy and menace can be fused to underscore the light and shade of human existence. It is certain
to produce a riveting perfomance from the Mask Theatre team in the intimate atmosphere of the Key’s ground floor studio space. The setting is a seaside boarding house where the arrival of two strangers heralds shocks for Stanley. A Moment Of Mishearing Boundary-pushing musician, writer and novelist Amit Chaudhuri will present a night to remember at the Key Theatre.
He is also an accomplished and acclaimed composer who trained in the Hindustani classical tradition, and is a songwriter and singer to boot.
With his own band, Amit will introduce A Moment of Mishearing, his all-new eclectic, multi-media musical production exploring his literary and musical ideas.
Amit reveals: “As I was practising raga Todi, (I heard) the riff to Clapton’s Layla in a handful of notes I was singing. Those moments of mishearing contained within them my past and a moment in the history of Bombay converging with the present.”
Amit Chaudhuri is one of India’s leading novelists with five novels under his talented belt, not to mention three works of non-fiction, a volume of poetry, and duties as editor of the Picador Book of Modern Indian Literature. He has won literary awards in his home country, the UK and America.
A Moment of Mishearing will be a show about memory, chance, music and a city. Saturday 10 March at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 (£8.50 concessions) Key I.P: £7.50

Brett Goldstein Grew Up In A Strip Club Brett Goldstein is an actor and writer who turned to stand-up in 2006, and just a year later was selected for a “best of new comedy”showcase at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. One thing’s for sure, Brett didn’t have to scratch around for material - not with the life he’s led! In 2001, Brett’s father had a spectacular mid-life crisis and instead of buying a sports car, he bought a strip club in Marbella! What followed was surprising, frightening and oddly emotional, and Brett was on the frontline for the whole thing. He waited 10 years to tell this story - mainly because it has taken so long to process it all, and for the laws to change enough so that
he could tell it in public. LAUGH at the antics of the Mafia! CRY at the loss of a young man’s innocence! MARVEL at the strippers and their magic ways! GASP at the backstage secrets. And CLAP politely at the end when you realise you’ve just sat through someone else’s therapy. The Times said it was “A good story, brilliantly told”, while WhatsOnStage said: “Goldstein is an excellent comedian and a talented storyteller. This is top class.” Monday, 12 March at 7.30pm Tickets £8.50 (£5 students) Key I.P: £7

The Trial More than 40 years after its first performance, Steven Berkoff’s brilliant adaptation of Franz Kafka’s masterpiece has become a classic work of 20th Century theatre. The Trial tells the story of Joseph K, an estranged and rootless citizen who is the victim of anonymous governing forces. Deceived by an authoritarian power he is relentlessly hunted down for a crime that remains nameless. When he’s arrested and awaiting trial, K sinks deeper and deeper as he tries to escape through twists and turns that are at once shocking, thrilling and funny. Kafka’s universal parable about the human condition is retold
in Berkoff’s startlingly original, fresh and endlessly surprising play, which is brought to the Key Theatre by Blackeyed Theatre. Kafka’s nightmare vision, Berkoff’s crackling script and the company’s trademark ensemble-style physical theatre combine to create an inspiring and unforgettable piece of drama, ideal for lovers of pure theatre. It is suitable for age 14+ The Stage called Blackeyed Theatre: “One of the most innovative, audacious companies working in contemporary English theatre.”

Journey to X A group of friends have formed a new band. Now all they have to do is raise the money to get to London to audition for the world’s biggest talent contest. Costumes, songs and fundraising techniques may divide opinion but one girl has a far more important choice to make. Their journey in search of fame and fortune is really a journey for something far less glamorous. Something their country doesn’t approve of, something their parents wouldn’t condone. In a culture of instant fame and talent show headlines, the importance of life and friendships come to the fore. Journey To X is also a story of
the risks teenagers take when plunged into an adult world. Following their massive success with Too Fast last year, the Key Youth Theatre company will stage this fantastic new play as part of the National Theatre’s Connections programme for 2012, for which 10 plays by British and international writers have been commissioned to inspire young theatre companies. Magic – A Kind of Queen It is not just a kind of magic, it is MAGIC, the first and still the best tribute to Queen and the fantastic music they made with never-to-be-forgotten lead singer Freddie Mercury. Prepare to be amazed, to be thrilled, and to feel part of an anthemic event when Magic perform Queen’s Greatest Hits in the intimate surroundings of the Key Theatre. And, how refreshing in these days of pre-recorded backing tracks, that Magic perform completely live. With five vocals to back up the powerful lead voice of the dynamic Roger Brown, Magic can recreate all the complex harmonies that are Queen’s trademark recording sound.
This, along with two guitars, bass, drums and the brilliant keyboard skills of Dave Chapman, produces a sound second to none. Although not attempting to emulate Queen visually, Magic creates all the excitement of a Queen live show. While playing at the Key will take them closer to their audience, Magic are no strangers to the big stage having headlined concerts from Moscow’s Gorky Park to America, Hong Kong, the Middle East and throughout Europe. Be assured - they WILL rock you! Friday,16 March at 7.30pm Tickets £18.50 (£17.50 concessions)

The Johnny Cash Story The word ‘legend’ may be over-used, and sometimes undeserved, but if anyone qualifies to be called just that it must be Johnny Cash. He grew up in appalling poverty and put all he learned about life into his songs, with a deep gravelly voice that sounded like it had been down many a long hard road. Johnny may be gone, but his music lives on, and sales of his albums have never been higher. And, on stage, the Cash tradition and musical heritage is kept alive by Britain’s own Roger Dean and his band, The Lazy Boys. Roger cut his teeth on the music of Johnny Cash and even appeared on BBC television
at the age of 14 singing The Tennessee Flat Top Box. Roger not only knows the music, he knows all about John R. the man, and he’ll keep you spellbound with his stories about the making of this country music giant and his journey from a dirt poor existence in Arkansas to topping the bill at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Not to mention recording alongside Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison in the early days of the Sun recording studio in Memphis. Roger will be singing all the Cash greats from Big River and Ring of Fire to I Walk The Line and Hurt Saturday 17 March at 7.30pm. Tickets £16 (£14 concessions)

Silly Cow Prepare for a laugh-outloud treat when Ben Elton’s stitches-busting comedy rocks the Key Theatre. As one sharp-witted reviewer put it: “Ben Elton’s characters spar with such eviscerating wit it’s a wonder they don’t cut themselves.” Silly Cow will certainly put you in the moo-d to enjoy a real lark. It is very, very funny and pulls no punches in what is a slick, sly, satire about the savage world of the tabloid press. Ben may have written it years ago with Dawn French in mind for the leading part, but it could hardly be more topical now in view of the demise of the News of the World and phone-hacking inquiries.
It centres on poison-pen critic Doris Wallace, a bitchy tabloid queen who has clawed her way to success and celebrity and hasn’t a good word to say about anybody. Anyway, Doris doesn’t need anybody, she’s got the lot, a toy boy with a regular supply of the best Columbian gear, a pretty PA who might succumb to her advances, and a big TV break on the horizon. She’s not even bothered about the “silly cow” who’s suing her for libel. But, skeletons are rattling about in her cupboard, and pigeons are coming home to roost. Big time. Next Swan Down The River Might Be Black If you like offbeat, surprising, unexpected plays that shine a light on the darkest corners of our society then Next Swan Down The River Might Be Black is not to be missed. Let’s just say, the Key Theatre Studio will become a psychiatric ward for the night. Yes, really. Next Swan Down The River Might Be Black doesn’t even pretend to be floating gently on the surface while paddling furiously beneath the waterline, it gets right to the heart of the matter. No surprise then, that it comes from playwright, poet and performer Sean Burn, who has been called “One of the country’s foremost experimental writers.” The drama is a poetic and
personal response to being sectioned under the Mental Health Act. It follows the shifting alliances of three young women on a psychiatric ward over one momentous week. They are Cerys (19) who is black and depressive, Kay (26) white and bi-polar, and Zee, a Pakistani British student nurse and former service user, who are all fighting a faceless institution in their own way. The play examines diversity, friendships, sexualities and power at a time of rising uncertainty. Can they summon the courage to live through it in this hauntingly lyrical play? Private Resistance It may be unthinkable now, but there was a real risk that Britain could have been invaded by the mighty German army in the 1940s. The public thought that the so-called Dad’s Army of volunteers was all that stood between them and the sound of Gestapo jackboots marching along British streets, if our final defences were overwhelmed. For obvious reasons,no one was told that Winston Churchill had a Plan B to save Britain. And that is the basis for the thought-provoking new drama Private Resistance, which was researched and written by Eastern Angles’ Artistic Director, Ivan Cutting.
Private Resistance presents audiences with the ultimate ‘what if?’ scenario of a German invasion. Set in 1940, it’s a thrilling tale of the so-called Auxiliary Units, Churchill’s secret guerilla army primed to go underground and fight behind the lines. Set in rural Essex, it’s a story of secrecy and sabotage, and of the bonds created and destroyed by war. It will be directed by Naomi Jones who received praise for previous Eastern Angles’ hits Return to Akenfield and The Long Way Home.

He has a passion for older women - or, more truthfully, their money. So, when his rich wife threatens to outlive her usefulness, Edward has a decision to make. He can practically smell the money and can’t wait to get his hands on it, so Edward decides
to hasten his wife’s end. But there’s a nasty surprise for Edward in her will. Oh What A Lovely War Those talented Performing Arts students from Peterborough Regional College return to the Key Theatre in March with another great show. This time it is in the Key Theatre Studio with a brilliant version of the World War One satire Oh What A Lovely War. Over 90 years on from the Armistice, Oh What A Lovely War remains a classic of the modern theatre, and stands as a powerful reminder of the atrocities of a war that cost 20 million lives. Told through the songs and documents of the period, it’s a satirical attack on the military incompetence and inconceivable disregard for human life that the First World War has come to represent.
The fact that men were sent to die in their thousands in the mud, blood and chaotic horror of the trenches gave rise to the saying that the ordinary soldiers, at the command of incompetent generals (under the battle cry “Your Country Needs You!”), were “lions led by donkeys.” At times satirical, funny and deeply moving, Oh What A Lovely War has a style all of its own, combining music, dance, songs and sketches to create a vivid picture.

The Barron Knights The Barron Knights were the jokers in the pack when British music dominated the pop scene in the Swinging Sixties. They were without doubt, the most entertaining group to put many a chortle into the charts with their send-ups of the groups and stars of the period. So successful were The Barron Knights’ satirical hits that many pop star egos were bruised if they were not chosen to be sent up. It became like a badge of honour to have been included in one of their mickey-takes. Of course, it didn’t end there, and The Barron Knights are still hugely popular all over Europe. Their musicianship, their harmonies, and, of course, their
humour has led to their peers calling them The Guvnors. Seeing one of their shows is certainly better than any tonic you’ll get on the NHS! Their career highlights have included 300 shows at the London Palladium, a performance at Buckingham Palace, and the Rolling Stones’ Bill Wyman admitting they inspired him, to buy his first guitar in 1961. So, Call Up The Groups, enjoy their parody of Killer Queen, their galloping William Tell Overture and other treats as you rock with laughter.

The Merry Widow Opera della Luna returns to Peterborough with a new production of Lehár’s classic operetta The Merry Widow. In a sparkling English translation, this imaginative staging captures the glamour and decadence of turn of the century Paris while infusing the production with Opera della Luna’s trademark wit. The Merry Widow is an operetta by the Austro–Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story – concerning a rich widow, and her countrymen’s attempt to keep her money in the principality by finding her the right husband – on an 1861 comedy play, L’attaché d’ambassade (The Embassy
Attaché) by Henri Meilhac. The operetta has enjoyed extraordinary international success since its 1905 premiere in Vienna and continues to be frequently revived and recorded. Film and other adaptations have also been made. Wellknown music from the score includes the “Vilja Song”, “Da geh’ ich zu Maxim” (“You’ll Find Me at Maxim’s”), and the “Merry Widow Waltz”. Opera della Luna, founded in 1994, is a British touring theatre troupe of actor-singers focusing on comic works. Sunday, 11 March, at 3pm Tickets £16.50 (concessions £15)
