Summer Holiday Activities return - bigger & better!

Jam-packed with lots of fun this summer This summer will once again be jam-packed with fun activities for children aged 4-13 to take part in. Sports programmes will be running at four different venues across the city, Hampton Leisure Centre, Jack Hunt Swimming Pool, Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre and Werrington Leisure Centre. Each club will offer an amazing variety of activities throughout the 6 week summer holiday which is guaranteed to keep the kids entertained. This summer, for the first two weeks, we’re partnering with the Greater Peterborough

Athletics Network at Regional Fitness and Swimming Centre, to give kids the opportunity to try a range of athletic events. Each week culminates with an athletics competition where the kids can show off their new skills. Plus we have a new theme each day and a variety of activities for kids to get involved in throughout the week. Activities include NERF wars, bouncy castles, Lego Building and so much more.

Join the club: A real life experience

The Moment Magazine talks to working mum Sophie Ambler whose daughter Summer has become one of Vivacity’s biggest fans when it comes to kids’ holiday clubs. How and why did you choose Vivacity’s holiday activities for Summer? I am a full-time working mum, and as you can probably appreciate, trying to source childcare during school holidays is never easy. Summer, who is six, also goes to the after-school clubs, so is already very familiar with the people who do all the sports. I did a little bit of research before she started going and all the reviews that I read were very good. I’ve also spoken to different members of staff who have always been very accommodating. Nothing is too much trouble. What does Summer most enjoy there? She is really into arts and crafts but also loves sports - specifically football. But they do such a variety of things, as well as being more than supportive of whatever the children themselves want to do. That’s one of the most important things as far as I’m concerned. But whenever she comes home from a day there she’s always really excited, really happy, wanting to tell me all about what she’s done. There was one sports specific week where they were having tournaments, and she was coming home with medals that she’d won on different days and parading them in her bedroom! She was really proud of them - she did particularly well in football, but had never had a medal before, so to her that was a big deal. She was saying: ‘Mummy, look what I got! I did really well!’

A summer of fun for everyone

And how has Vivacity’s holiday activities helped you as a parent? If it weren’t for Vivacity’s holiday activities, I wouldn’t be able to go to work. I don’t have immediate family around me who can offer to look after her, but the fact I have people there who I trust, who can look after her, means I can continue going to work knowing she’s happy. If I didn’t have that I have no idea what I would do! So, as far as childcare goes, it’s brilliant. The facilities are brilliant. All the snacks that are provided are nutritious, and they are given options of water, juice – always something that is healthy. I have no hesitation sending her there whatsoever and would recommend it to anyone. It gives me a chance to go to work, and she’s happy, she’s learning, she’s thriving... What more can you ask for? From the mouths of parents

The Moment Magazine talks to Peterborough parent and teaching assistant Lisa Bloodworth about what she gets out of Vivacity’s holiday activities. How have you made use of Vivacity’s holiday activities? I have a seven-year-old daughter, Maisy, and I often go to events at the Museum with one of my best friends because we’re both single mums. We’ve been to various events over the half terms and holidays – an Egyptian event, a Mad Hatter’s event, a science event... They’re great, because you can spend as little or as much time in there as you want – though we always make the most of it! They make you see things in a new way, and not just the things in the Museum itself. What first attracted you to these events? Costs can sometimes get out of hand when you visit places with children during the holidays, but these are extremely reasonably priced. And it’s local. They’re suitable for a wide range of ages, too, from about four to at least ten or eleven. They always come away learning something too. My daughter has told her class all about the things she has attended. They were doing the Egyptians in school so she was able to relate that directly to what she’d already seen in the Museum. But also we just love the Museum! As a teaching assistant, do you see the value of keeping children’s learning going through the holidays? Absolutely. The summer holiday is such a long period of time for children not to be at school, but activities like these can be really important as a way of keeping their minds active. They don’t realise it, but they’re reading, doing research, doing maths A summer of fun for everyone

problems - it’s education wrapped in fun. It’s always very hands-on - it’s not just reading or looking at things. Are you planning to go during the summer holidays? During the summer, we’ll go at least four times. That’s minimum – even if there isn’t an event happening, we’ll go to the Museum and have a look around. My daughter is fascinated by the fossils - she never gets bored of going in there, and always finds something different. She’d go every week if she could! And Flag Fen, too. They’ve done archery there, made clay pots, dug for artefacts and fossils in the archaeology tent. What’s the best part of it for you? It’s a lovely way to spend a bit of quality time with the children. And they really do love it. It’s social, too. Every time we’ve been there we’ve bumped into people we haven’t seen for a long time. For the adults too, it gives us a chance to catch up and have a bit of social time while the kids are off searching for things. There’s a lovely coffee shop there, and we always treat ourselves to a cake afterwards! For more stories like this head to The Moment Magazine website.
