A group of decorators are joined by Owen, an artist and journeymanprophet with a vision of a just society. However, a trip intended to relax and rejuvenate quickly becomes a journey of unquenchable comedy. Farm Boy, the compelling sequel to Morpurgo’s much loved War Horse, tells the story of the changing face of the English countryside and centres on the bonds linking grandfather to grandson and ultimately both to the land. Written by East Anglian playwright Joel Horwood, acclaimed for his work with the Lyric Hammersmith, Nabokov Theatre Company and the West Yorkshire Playhouse, I Peterborough is a no holds barred depiction of growing up in an overspill town. Lulu is a big bloke, with a dodgy wig, high-heels and delusions of celebrity. Teamed with his son Hew, both Peterborough born and bred, the two men form a dysfunctional double-act. With sounds from the seventies and eighties and a darkly comic cabaret-style theatre performance, the family’s lives are laid bare. Kathryn Tickell is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria. This magical show is based on interviews and recordings Kathryn has done over the years with family members and the shepherd musicians from whom she learnt, including mouth organ player Will Atkinson and fiddler Willie Taylor. Sunday 21 October at 7.30pm TICKETS: £14.50 (£13.50 concessions) For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence on the folk scene as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group. Having worked alongside other leading musicians such as Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Beryl and Roger Marriott and A. L. Lloyd, he teamed up with Martin Carthy in 1966.

Peggy Seeger

Sunday 18 November at 7.30pm TICKETS: £14.50 (£13.50 concessions) An accomplished multi instrumentalist and singer, Peggy Seeger’s show is full of humour, pathos and great songs. Most of all, Peggy has an ability to interact and connect with her audience. Born in 1935, Peggy is Pete Seeger's half-sister and Ruth Crawford Seeger's daughter; her first life partner was the English songwriter Ewan MacColl, who wrote First Time Ever I Saw Your Face for her and to whom she bore three children. Peggy is known for her excellent renditions of AngloAmerican folksongs and for her activist songwriting, especially in the field of feminism. Her best-known pieces are Gonna Be an Engineer and The Ballad of Springhill, the latter of which is rapidly becoming regarded as a traditional song. "She can make a traditional song timeless yet as current as if written yesterday." Rich Warren WFMT
This remarkable pairing played an important part in the tremendous shake up given to British folk music in the middle to late 60s. The result was a new era of English instrumental folk music and a new approach to folk music altogether. Their experienced approach to their art lacks none of the fervour of their early days, and brings a maturity born of many years living with the music that is an integral part of their beings. All the old skills are demonstrated with a new collection of traditional songs and instrumentals. "Intense and demanding, this is hard core traditional music. Our Day Out is the story of a school trip for Mrs Kay and her progress class, whose best laid plans for a fun day out at Alton Towers are scuppered by school tyrant Mr Briggs when he insists on going on the trip with them…. This all new version was first presented at the Royal Court in Liverpool in 2009 and was such a smash it that it reappeared a year later. KYT have been given special permission by Willy Russell himself to be the first company outside Liverpool to stage the show. Willy’s other work includes the long running West End smash Blood Brothers, the highly acclaimed Educating Rita and the Oscar nominated Shirley Valentine.

Forty films from over twenty countries are programmed across five evenings, each bringing a wide range of styles and themes, from comedy to romance, drama to thriller and animation.
The season includes: The Piano Tuner from France. What happens when a piano tuner who pretends to be blind witnesses something he shouldn’t? Sugar from Holland. John Hegley: The Adventures of Monsieur Robinet

Thursday 13 September at 7pm TICKETS: £8 (£5 for under 16s) Enjoy an evening of poetry and comedy with John Hegley as part of Peterborough’s first We Love Words Festival of Poetry and Literature. John Hegley has been performing poetry and music since 1970 when he started busking in Hull. Since then, he’s produced numerous books and performs all over the UK. He’s a true master at bringing poetry to life. The Adventures of Monsieur Robinet tells tales of a Frenchman with some unusual (but clean) habits and of his dog, Chirac. There is some love interest which appears rather one-sided and the extraordinary tapping of a television set, all of which make this a highly entertaining experience for the whole family.
