Peterborough Museum and St Botolph’s Primary School teamed up for the day, which saw children aged 7-11 years old running the Museum.
“WE REALLY ENJOYED THE CHILDREN TAKING OVER THE MUSEUM, AND GIVING THEM EXPERIENCE OF THE WORLD OF WORK. I AM SURE THEY GAINED A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT WE DO.”
The Georgian mansion is home to an original Victorian operating theatre and a WWII air raid shelter, plus it has over 200,000 items in its collections of great national and international importance. These include Norman Cross prisoner of war craftwork, Jurassic marine reptiles and artefacts from Roman Peterborough – meaning there was plenty for the children to discover and explore on Takeover Day!
This spring, Peterborough Museum is delving deep into its fabulous costume collection to bring you the very best Edwardian Fashion from La Belle Époque (the beautiful era).
There will be a complementary programme of exciting Edwardian costume events. Plus school groups can find out how the Edwardians lived through a series of museumled activities.

Peterborough Museum offers a truly unique learning environment for children.

Set up by the government’s Children’s Commissioner, Takeover Day encourages young people to spend time in a working environment, be involved in decision-making and ‘takeover’ aspects of adult jobs.

We Got The Beat!
“One of the really exciting things is that the participants will create the music. This isn’t about revisiting tired old repertoire, or leaders making young people learn pieces they aren’t interested in,” said Vivacity’s Arts Development Officer Joan Crump.
“IT WILL BE TOTALLY LED BY THE YOUNG PEOPLE THEMSELVES”
“ONE OF THE REALLY EXCITING THINGS IS THAT THE PARTICIPANTS WILL CREATE THE MUSIC.”
There will be two Big Workshop days at the Key Theatre during February half term, and the group will begin weekly Saturday morning rehearsals at the Key Theatre from 23 February. There will also be a series of high-profile performances in 2013 at major festivals and events.
ARTS FEATURE
In January and early February, secondary schools will be offered the opportunity to experience Taster Sessions with the Beat Orchestra leaders. Young people from any musical background at all will be encouraged to give it a go: the only requirements are some musical experience, enthusiasm and the ability to be receptive to others. Collaboration is absolutely key to the music the ensemble will make.
“The Beat Orchestra will create their own music, with support from our expert leaders. It will be totally led by the young people themselves.”
/
The ensemble will start recruiting participants in January, but the first job has been to recruit musicians to lead the group. The call went out in October for music tutors and workshop leaders to audition for the project, and the result is an incredibly diverse range of tutors and support musicians, from classical violinists and trumpet players to guitarists, rappers and beatboxers. This team is supported by worldclass training from music
education experts Paul Griffiths and Fraser Trainer, who have developed similar youth fusion orchestras in Australia and Europe. The lead team had its first day of training in November with Fraser and Paul, and came out of the sessions absolutely buzzing with enthusiasm and ideas.
VIVA
Peterborough is getting a brand new music ensemble for 14 to 19 year olds, and it’s set to turn all the ideas you’ve got about youth orchestras on their head! The Beat Orchestra is a brand new initiative that aims to work with young people from all kinds of backgrounds to create music that is fresh, new, and totally unique to Peterborough. Led by local music organisation Beat This, with partners Vivacity, Britten Sinfonia and Orchestras Live, the Beat Orchestra will take its musical direction from the genres, influences and musical passions of its participants.

Paola McClure is a Dundee based artist and is well known for her intriguing, alienlike creatures and voluptuous upholstered female figures which she crafts from vintage fabrics and second-hand clothing. She is interested in fabrics, pattern and colour and her influences range from the primitive to the camp.
Sparkle and Spin is a touring exhibition produced by 20-21 Visual Arts Centre. Paola has created several new pieces of work for the touring exhibition, including large-scale installations, photographs from her collection and two pieces visitors will be able to interact with, to make their own sculpture or installation.
Although this highly individual work has a dark edge, it is impossible to escape the sense of fun, and the joy of making. Taking its name from a popular children’s book of the 1970s by Ann and Paul Rand, Sparkle and Spin features new ‘soft sculpture’ characters and large-scale installation pieces which have plenty to inspire visitors, young and old alike.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games may seem a distant memory now but that didn’t stop Paralympic medallists Harriet Lee and Matt Skelhon keeping the magic of the games alive when they toured Peterborough to celebrate their successes this summer in an event organised by Vivacity.
Harriet, 21, won bronze in the women’s 100m breaststroke and Matt, 27, won silver and bronze in mixed rifle events, but the athletes put the focus of the day on inspiring others to achieve their goals and potential. “We want to inspire people no matter what age or disability”, said Harriet. “There are always people who say you can’t do something but you just have to go out there and prove them wrong.” “When I had my accident I realised sport could take me somewhere”, added Matt. “The most important thing is to try lots of different things to find out what you’re good at. If you want something, go for it!” Vivacity has been successfully delivering disability sport since 2010 and has secured over £100,000 worth of funding for disability sport for the city, with 250 people taking part in activities each week.

VIVA NEWS VIVACITY VENUES NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
MEET BEST SELLING AUTHOR JOANNA TROLLOPE
FLAG FEN COMES TO LIFE
Peterborough Museum is delighted to announce that it has formed a partnership with the Natural History Museum, as part of the Real World Science (RWS) programme.
Joanna Trollope will be visiting Central Library on Friday 1 February at 1pm to talk about her latest novel The Soldier’s Wife and her life as a writer.
The three-year project is funded through the Schools and Museums programme by Arts Council England. Peterborough Museum is a regional partner for the East of England, one of eight museums across the country who are part of the collaboration.
This is a wonderful opportunity to meet one of the UK’s most popular writers, with signed copies of the new book available to purchase at the event. The event costs £5 (£4 con) and to book call 01733 864280
In the culmination of an exciting new project between the IBM Visual and Spatial Technology Centre and Vivacity, Flag Fen has been brought to life in all its Bronze Age glory through the use of visual and spatial technologies.
The RWS programme will provide a range of science-based activities for students aged 1018yrs. It will give students the opportunity to handle objects from Peterborough Museum’s collections, go behind-thescenes to see science in action and to participate in fun and inspiring science shows, practical workshops and study days.
NEW 3G PITCH FOR FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY ENTHUSIASTS
COMPUTER COURSES Get to grips with technology with the free computer basics course, or further your skills with additional courses in eBay shopping, Microsoft Word and Laptop Workshops. Contact your local library for more information.
Bushfield Leisure Centre is now home to a brand new thirdgeneration (3G) outdoor allweather pitch and new changing facilities, thanks to a refurbishment programme at Orton Centre.
PETERBOROUGH MILE RAISES £32,000 FOR SPORT RELIEF We’re delighted to announce that last year’s Peterborough Mile, a sponsored mile long run organised by Vivacity for Sport Relief, raised an incredible £13k. A grand total of £32k has been raised at two events since 2010.
Using the completed programme, visitors can explore the recreated landscape on a plasma screen at Flag Fen. This project has been completed using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data taken from Flag Fen and historic environment records uncovered from previous archaeological investigations. The visualisation brings to life the spiritual elements of this evocative site too.
PETERBOROUGH MUSEUM’S GARDEN PROJECT GROWS AND GROWS! The Museum Garden has been adopted by Gladstone Primary School and will now be used by pupils during week days. The school children will be involved in monitoring wildlife at this city centre site, constructing wildlife habitats, and growing and harvesting vegetables.
