Lovely to meet you and thank you for agreeing to be our Guest Editor. Can you tell us about your role at Vivacity?

This issue we met up with Eliza Nissim from the Key Youth Theatre, who told us about her long-standing love of musical theatre.

VIVA Guest Editor

ELIZA NISSIM FROM THE KEY YOUTH THEATRE

I have a keen interest in the theatre so I have had a couple of experiences working in the industry. I spent a week in May working in London on Les Misérables. I helped on set and in costume. I also like being in the audience for the filming of TV shows. All of this and I have still had time to do my GCSEs! VIVA

Do you and your friends like to go to other Vivacity venues? If so, which ones and to do what? ELIZA

My parents have always been involved with the Key Theatre – long before I was born – and my sister was in KYT before me. As part of the school sports day and PE lessons, we would use the Embankment Sports and Athletics Arena, but theatre is my main love.

Eliza

Too Darn Hot/Treats looks really interesting and it stars two KYT workshop leaders so I must make sure I see that! Of course, the KYT summer musical will be very exciting but I shall be performing in that so won’t be able to watch it! VIVA

What is the one thing that excites you most about Peterborough? Eliza

The most exciting thing for me is the growing prospect of better restaurants and places to eat around Peterborough. My friends and I love going to restaurants after school. It’s good to have something to do in the evenings where I can go with my friends.

Turn to p20 to find out more about the KYT and how to get involved.

GUEST EDITOR

Sounds interesting, if not hard work! What do you do to relax in your spare time?

Looking at upcoming events at the Key Theatre – do you have your eye on anything?

VIVA

I am really involved with the Key Theatre because I am an usher in the evenings and I am also a member of KYGlee. In the past I have been on stage in several events including the KYT version of Our Day Out, South Pacific and six pantos! I started performing when I was just eight years old.

The Must Farm boats have arrived!

“It really is such an incredible find,” explains Ian Panter, Principal Conservator at York Archaeological Trust, who has been working at Flag Fen since April. “During my 30-year career I have only been asked to work on three individual boats – now I have eight Bronze Age boats to conserve in one go!” Ian is talking about the Must Farm boats - the nationally and internationally important archaeological discoveries that were recently found two miles to the east of Flag Fen, at a site that was part of the same prehistoric landscape 3,500 years ago.

Today this site is owned by Hanson UK, and is quarried to extract the deep Oxford clay layers that are used in the manufacture of bricks. This deep excavation has shed new light and revealed amazing finds from prehistory. Archaeologists from Cambridge Archaeological Unit have been excavating a section of the lost course of the River Nene as it would have been during the Bronze Age. They have uncovered remarkably preserved items, including sections of fish weir and preserved eel traps, weapons, pottery and tools. These give an incredible window into what life was like during that period.

Most astonishing of all was the discovery of eight prehistoric log boats, most of which were in an incredible state of preservation due to the wetland nature of the area. Many were virtually intact and some have elaborate features including lifting handles, grooves for transom boards and even evidence of decoration. These boats have now been brought to Flag Fen, where they are undergoing conservation by a team of world-class experts to preserve them for future generations. The waterlogged boats are refrigerated in a specialist cold storage facility at Flag Fen to prevent them drying out too quickly.

They will be treated over a two year period with a specialist wax, polyethylene glycol, which will stabilise the timbers. This technique was used on the ancient Seahenge timbers discovered in Norfolk, and on the Mary Rose, Henry VIII’s Tudor warship. Carbon-14 tests will give us more precise dating as to when they were made. We need to find out why the boats were abandoned in the river. Were they just washed up at that point in the river, or were they sunk deliberately as part of some form of ritual or funeral ceremony? The boats have enormous significance to Peterborough, Whittlesey and the surrounding areas. Vivacity is delighted to be working with a team of experts on this project, including York Archaeological Trust, Cambridge Archaeological Unit, Hanson UK, Peterborough City Council and English Heritage.

DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THE BOATS

The boats are currently being conserved in the cold storage facility at Flag Fen. They are available to view through guided tours and special events. Look out for our exciting programme of associated events to explore the lost world behind this wonderful find. For more information Call 01733 313414 or visit vivacity-peterborough.com

It’s a full on role and no two days are ever the same! VIVA

Tell us a bit more about this year’s headline act? LISA

This year, the big spectacular will be by Generik Vapeur, who are a French company who have toured internationally, and they will be coming to do a residency here at the Key Theatre before the festival. They will train 20 local performers and volunteers to take part in their performance. So, we will be having local people taking part in the finale, trained by the artists. What I’m particularly passionate about is bringing international artists to Peterborough but also sharing their experience. I’m not really so interested in bringing them in, having them perform and then they leave, with no interaction. But at the end of it, these people will have worked with an international company. They can say on their CVs that they’ve worked with Generik Vapeur, and that is a fantastic thing to have. VIVA

What are your personal favourites and highlights of the 2013 programme? LISA

One of the best things that you cannot miss is the Wheel of Death...There will be three shows a day, and you should see all three shows because the story continues throughout the day. The performers

We understand the festival is moving to the Embankment, what new opportunities will this bring? LISA

We moved it for two reasons. The first was being part of the ZEPA2 partnership, and the fact that we were clashing with a couple of the other partners’ festivals. It may also mean better weather, but we do have a wet weather contingency which also revolves around the Key Theatre, so if there’s wet weather we can bring stuff inside. The move down to the riverside will also really showcase the Key Theatre, and introduce the idea of the Key Theatre as a cultural hub. We have programmed performances inside the theatre, outside the theatre and spreading up the riverside, this means we will be using the Embankment in a very different way to all the other festivals in Peterborough. We used this area last year for the Through The Looking Glass event – the event was hugely successful and showed how we could use the space creatively. VIVA

Can you give us some more information on the new partnership with ZEPA 2 and the impact the partnership will have on our local festival? LISA

This year’s newly named Peterborough Arts Fest has been developed with the support of the ZEPA 2 network, the project was selected under the European cross-border cooperation programme INTERRGE IV a France – England, co-funded by the ERDF, an innovative project partnering seven major English and French Festivals. Thanks to the ZEPA 2 partnership Arts Fest has expanded to include three main elements for 2013, namely Festival on Tour, Festival Field Day and Festival Finale weekend. KYT Summer Musical

The Key Theatre runs the hugely successful Key Youth Theatre (KYT for short) and each summer produces the equally successful Summer Musical. Here we talk to Paul Collings, KYT Director, about KYT and his role within it.

Can you tell us a bit about KYT and Summer School? Paul

KYT is the resident Youth Theatre of the Key. It’s been in existence for about 22 years now and I’ve been running it for the last 10 of those. We currently have over 200 regular attendees at our weekly workshops which run alongside the school year from September — July. We’ll be holding some workshops on September 14 for prospective new members for 2013-14 and application forms will be available shortly for this. Summer School is one of the highlights of our year. We essentially take over the Key for two amazing weeks at the start of the summer holidays (This year’s starts on July 29) and have almost 300 children working with professional directors, choreographers and musicians to put on fantastic shows for a jam-packed audience at the Key. It’s a proper blast!

It’s Les Miserables School Edition and yes you can! It’s on from 21 — 24 August and tickets are available right now. Don’t let the words ‘School Edition’ put you off. This is a version of the show that has been slightly modified to suit the voices of younger performers but still contains all of the songs, music and characters that audiences of the stage show and now of course the film will be familiar with. This is probably the biggest challenge that we have ever taken on with KYT, certainly in my time. VIVA

How many young people are involved?

We have a cast of over 50 young people and also one of our Musical Directors is only 16 years of age!

VIVA

Where can readers go for more information on Summer School and the summer musical?

Paul

Information on both of these things is available from the Box Office at the Key, but you can also go to the website vivacitypeterborough.com and click on the Key Youth Theatre tab at the bottom of the page and all of the information, including application forms for our annual Summer School can be found there. VIVA

What are your top five favourite things about Summer School? Paul

The kids, the teamwork, the camaraderie, the energy that permeates around the Key for two weeks and finally it has to be the looks on their faces and the outpouring of energy and emotion when they have finished their performances, which for a lot of them will be the first time they’ve ever been on a professional stage.

We have a cast of over 50 young people and also one of our Musical Directors is only 16 years of age! We are also really keen to hear from young musicians that might like to form part of

To coincide with Peterborough Museum’s exhibition Space: Fact and Fiction, come and see previously unseen manuscripts from local science fiction writer John Kippax. Famous for his Venturer Twelve series, he also produced a whole host of short stories, plays, poetry and drawings, many of which were broadcast on the BBC in the 1950s and 1960s. One of Peterborough’s unsung authors, John Kippax’s work painted a picture of a world of starships, mysterious plants, vicious aliens, and the valiant Commander Tom Bruce who battled them all.

10 previously hidden objects, weird, wonderful and beautiful by turn, go on display in First Time Out (until 31 July), a unique collaboration which sees 10 museums and galleries each exhibit an artefact from their archives which has never been seen before. But in a twist, 10 stories become 20 as artefacts are switched between partnered venues mid-way through the project, with fresh interpretations provided by the new hosts. From 4 July Peterborough Museum will have on display a rough-toothed dolphin skull with ink scrimshaw decoration on loan from the Natural History Museum, London. Vivacity Culture and Leisure is thrilled to announce that Peterborough has successfully been awarded £725,000 of funding from Arts Council England as part of a £1.2m programme.

Rollers family skate wins community award

On 4 June, Vivacity Sports and Leisure proudly accepted a Good Citizenship Award for Youth by David Hedges, Chairman of Werrington Neighbourhood Council. The award, which is given for exceptional work in the community was given in recognition of the popular Rollers family skate programme. Volunteer skate stewards and staff from the family skate team accepted the award supporting the good work done in establishing Werrington Leisure Centre as a popular venue, offering a unique event for the children and young people of Werrington. Rollers family skate runs every Saturday 5pm-8pm and 1st Sunday

Peterborough makes the national grade

Creative people and places is a national funding programme from Arts Council England which is designed to get more people involved in the arts. The funding, which is for three years, will be used to create a programme of work focused on young people, artist’s networks and collaborations and bringing new communities together to increase audiences and participation in the arts in Peterborough. An exciting and innovative programme has been developed by local representatives from Vivacity, Creative Peterborough, Young Lives, Step Up Community Association, Voluntary Arts and Metal. The consortium has been working on the programme and talking to local groups from across the city and it is a great boost to Peterborough to receive this award as it reflects the active support of the many local groups that have been involved over the past year.

We’d love you to get involved — so if you fancy being a guest editor, contributing to the publication or simply sharing your views then we’d love to hear from you.
