VIVA Guest Editor NATALIE ELDRIDGE BEAUTY THERAPIST
VIVA
Lovely to meet you Natalie. What do you think people’s impression of the city is at the moment? NATALIE
The people of Peterborough are starting to take more pride in where they live and taking responsibility in making the city a better place to live.
VIVA
What’s the next big thing in beauty? NATALIE
Clients want treatments that achieve real results quickly. Our new 3D-Lipo treatment can achieve this and I’m so excited to be a part of the team at Vivacity bringing it to Peterborough.
07 vivacity-peterborough.com
This issue we met up with Natalie Eldridge, Beauty Therapist at the Radiance Beauty & Wellbeing Suite at the Regional Fitness & Swimming Centre, who gave us her city-wide highlights for this season.
VIVA
After managing the salon and day spa in America my passion for the industry was sparked and I’m now proud to say I have the opportunity to impact people’s lives in a positive way. Clients leave smiling and feeling good about themselves. VIVA
What are your ambitions and goals for the rest of 2013?
VIVA
What events would you like to see added into the city’s cultural calendar? NATALIE
The youth of today will play a major part in our tomorrow and so I would like to see more youth social events led by people of inspiration and influence that can help to educate our children. VIVA
You’ve worked in America, how does the UK beauty industry compare?
NATALIE
I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with Dermalogica products and work my way through their training programme to become one of the few and trusted trained professionals awarded with the Expert status. A good therapist is an ever-learning therapist.
NATALIE
The Americans see beauty as an essential, whereas the British tend to view beauty as a luxury. It is my job to educate clients to see beauty from a different perspective – not just as a cosmetic treatment but as a part of daily life to achieve both inner and outer wellbeing.
Photo: John Moore
The benefit is that there seems to be an increasing amount of resources available within the city to help people improve themselves. However I think one of the challenges is that as a city we are rapidly increasing in size and that requires even more of these resources.
NATALIE

VIVA NEWS FEEL THE ‘PETERBOROUGH EFFECT’ AT THE MUSEUM
Following the success of Eastern Angles’ Theatre production Parkway Dreams, the Forty Years On team are planning an exhibition at Peterborough Museum. The exhibition will run from October to December and will feature the iconic chopper bike and other items that were manufactured in Peterborough, such as a soda stream and vintage children’s games. There will be an opportunity to see the TV adverts that featured the famous Roman Centurion Roy Kinnear and to listen to radio adverts which were part of the media campaign to attract newcomers to the city. A Bakelite telephone containing oral history audio clips will enable visitors to get a real sense of what life was like in Peterborough during that exciting expansion period. Original photographs, maps and documents will also be on display and there will be a children’s activity corner all set against the backdrop of the music and accompanied by the fashions of the time! So come along and feel the Peterborough effect! For more information call 01733 864632. Plus! Tell us your story… The Forty Years On project, which looks at the fascinating history of Peterborough from 1968 – 2008, has now completed
150 oral history interviews. The project is now looking to interview people who migrated to Peterborough in the 1990s and 2000s from Eastern Europe. For more information and to take part please call 01733 864298. EMBANKMENT SPORTS & ATHLETICS ARENA GETS AN UPGRADE

Explore Peterborough’s ghostly past…
VIVA
Peterborough has a bit of a reputation as a ‘new town’. Do you feel the city has a wealth of ghost stories to be told?
We met up with Stuart Orme, Vivacity’s Events and Programmes Manager, to discover more about spooky events taking place this Halloween.
VIVA
Why is Peterborough Museum known as the city’s most haunted building? STUART
STUART
Absolutely! We’re actually an ancient and historic city, with one of the longest consistent occupations in the UK, going back over 3,500 years - the ‘new town’ story is just the latest part of that. As such, it’s not surprising that we have a wealth of ghost stories - over 150 different ghostly happenings across the greater Peterborough area at the last count!
Because it is! The oldest parts of the building date back to around 1536. During the Victorian period it became the first hospital in the city. Given that long history it’s not surprising that we’re said to be haunted, with our earliest ghost sighting reported as far back as 1884! VIVA
Is it true the Museum is home to Britain’s oldest murder victim?
VIVA
Can you share with us one of the ghostly tales from the city centre walks? STUART
I suppose one of the most thought-provoking is the ghost of a young monk seen running down the middle of the nave in Peterborough Cathedral. He walks down the nave, then suddenly starts running in panic, disappearing into thin air when he gets under the main tower. People who’ve seen him say they can’t see his feet, as if he’s walking on a floor surface buried below the modern one.
STUART
We have three skeletons, dating back some 6,000 years to the Neolithic period. They were found on Fengate in the 1970s by archaeologists. The skeletons are of a man, a woman and a girl, and the man has a flint arrowhead lodged in his ribs, indicating he had been shot. Textbooks often name this burial as the oldest victim of violence found in the UK. VIVA
Have you seen a ghost yourself? STUART
VIVA
Why do you recommend going on a ghost walk? STUART
It’s a great evening out and a wonderful way to explore the city, both for visitors to the city and for local people who want to get a different view on the place where they live. Hopefully people on the walks go away having enjoyed themselves, perhaps having been a bit spooked and thinking ‘I didn’t know that about Peterborough!’
Yes, most recently I caught a glimpse of a lady in a Victorian dress in the Museum back in March — but if you want to know the full story you’ll have to come on the ghost walk!
!
The Peterborough Ghost Walks have been running for 12 years. In that time we’ve done over 400 walks and entertained more than 20,000 people!

In the year of the Key’s 40th birthday, the programme is more packed than ever, bursting with high quality shows from start to finish! The season begins in September and runs right through to Panto, which this year is the family favourite tale of Cinderella. Over the season we have plenty to sink your teeth into including: 16 nights of music, 15 innovative dramas, 12 family friendly productions, 8 stand-up comedy shows, 7 evenings of spoken word, 5 classic films, 4 spectacular musicals, 3 festive favourites, 2 toe tapping dance hits, this year’s Panto — Cinderella, or the alternative Christmas treat — Tin Soldier. And if that’s not good enough for you, come to the Key Theatre Open Day on November 24 to see how the theatre works behind the scenes! Our family friendly shows have proven a hit over the last year and this season promises to be even better. Experience what it’s like to be in a real comedy club with the Comedy Club 4 Kids (14 September), interact with classic fairytales in Remember Remember (21 September) or be taken on a trip around the world with Peut-être Theatre’s This and That (15 — 19 October).

Over the season we have plenty to sink your teeth into
Drama takes its form in many mysterious ways; from Harold Pinter’s Betrayal (3 October), to the danger of the murderous Ripper Files (17 — 19 October). Lighter relief is provided by LipService as they don their rustic knitwear for Inspector Norse (24 October). Music has always been at the heart of the Key Theatre, and it is the love that keeps The Nick Ross Orchestra (6 October) returning with the Sounds of the Glenn Miller Era. As well as Buddy Holly and the Cricketers (16 October), and other familiar faces to the Key, we make way for legend of the industry, Ralph McTell (28 October) — who also spearheads the ever growing popularity of folk acts. Comedy at the Key comes in two forms: monthly comedy nights, hosting some of the biggest names on the touring circuit, and headline acts who take over the main auditorium. This season we say “Willkommen!” to German Comedy Ambassador — Henning Wehn (19 September), “welcome back” to Key favourite funny man Tony Law (15 October) and “well…hello” to top British comedians Hal Cruttenden (25 October) and Richard Herring (4 November).

Some of these sessions will be provided by the visiting companies, and some by Kate Hall – part of the Vivacity Arts team who has experience of running educational activity for national companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company, English Touring Theatre and the Manchester Royal Exchange. “We want to try something new in what we offer to schools,” explains Kate. “ The Key Theatre’s Autumn Programme has so many different shows that will appeal to students and teachers, from Shakespeare to Pinter, from dance to music, and will provide a flexible education programme to support their visit.”
Education, Workshops, Music & more
Teachers and youth leaders who want to find out more about the Autumn programme and education activity should contact the box office on 01733 207237 or email key.theatre@vivacity-peterborough.com Vivacity is also working with Peterborough Music Partnership to deliver an incredible programme of music performances and workshops. In addition, two community music ensembles have been created for young people aged 8 - 18, who can receive free tuition in marimba or the dhol drum, and there’s also a new family community choir. SHAKESPEARE SEASON Date September – January 01733 207239
A TEMPESTUOUS JOURNEY FROM SCANDAL & INTRIGUE TO LUST & VENGEANCE. We kick off in September with the first in our Shakespeare season with Icarus Theatre’s Othello (16 – 18 September), a tempestuous journey from scandal and intrigue to lust and vengeance. Then, join the madcap men of the Reduced Shakespeare Company as they perform all 37 plays in 97 minutes (26 September). Spanning the spectrum of the globe, Creative Cow tackle the Merry Wives of Windsor (2 October) the only play set in middle class England, whereas Cymbeline (7 – 8 October)
is a vibrant re-creation of Shakespeare in an exotic Bollywood style. As everybody knows, Shakespeare is boring, old and forced into every school child confined to the classroom, right? Wrong! The Shakespeare Schools Festival (10 – 11 October) returns to the Key, making it possible for local schools to perform abridged productions in a professional theatre. Finally, Transport’s reinvention of As You Like It (14 October) takes a different look at the popular comedy, wrapping up the short season of Shakespeare.

Ships and Boats By Alfred Wallis This September, one of the most original and inspiring British artists of the 20th Century will have work on display in the City Gallery, thanks to a partnership with Kettle’s Yard, who owns nearly 100 works by Alfred Wallis. The exhibition will be a great opportunity to see 40 of Wallis’ remarkable paintings, some of which have rarely been shown. This is the first opportunity in over 20 years to see all these works presented together. THE ARTIST
THE WORK
Alfred Wallis was born in Devon in 1855. In the 1870s he had been a ‘mariner, merchant service’, crossing the Atlantic and later working in the smaller fishing boats closer to shore before becoming a scrap-metal merchant in St Ives. In 1922, and with no art training, Wallis took up painting ‘for company’ after the death of his wife. Wallis had little money and mainly painted on found bits of card and discarded packaging. Using household and ship paint from the supply store in St Ives, Wallis painted ships and boats, seascapes and villages of Cornwall in a limited supply of colours. Wallis painted six days a week, producing hundreds of works.
On display are 40 paintings, from the Kettle’s Yard reserve collection and paintings from the part of the house that will be closed due to building works. The collection shows what Wallis is best known for, from brigantines and sailing boats to tug boats and motor vessels, often battling with unpredictable seas. What shines out is Wallis’ exceptional natural talent.
Wallis was approached by Ben Nicolson and Christopher Wood in 1928 when the London artists were visiting St Ives. They championed his work back in London and included him in the Seven & Five Society’s exhibition in 1929. Towards the end of his life, Wallis became increasingly isolated. He died in Madron poorhouse in 1942.

Meanwhile, five-year old Madona Fazackerly makes her mark in an unexpected way, life changes dramatically for Ruby the caretaker and, in the village coffee shop, Dorothy Humpleby plans a dirty weekend. “WRY OBSERVATION AND HEARTWARMING HUMOUR IN EQUAL MEASURE” Alan Titchmarsh

SPORTS FEATURE
The Paralympics: One Year On ‘Inspire a generation’ was the motto for Team GB’s Paralympians last summer, when they successfully won 120 medals including 34 golds. VIVA speaks to Matt Taylor, Vivacity’s Disability Sports Officer, to see how the Paralympics had an impact on disability sports in Peterborough.
VIVA
Hi Matt. What does your role as Vivacity’s Disability Sports Officer involve? MATT
I organise and deliver sports opportunities to children and adults who have a disability as well as their families and carers. I run our Short Breaks programme aimed at children and their families which involves a range of sports and exercise sessions, out of school hours, that can include participants whatever their disability. I also run sports sessions for adults to attend where we also have programmes such as Stroke Rehabilitation through Exercise and Specific Gym sessions. VIVA
IPC President Phillip Craven declared the London 2012 Paralympics as being the “greatest Paralympic games ever”, would you agree? MATT
Yes definitely, it has increased the country’s awareness of the range of disability sports available and given people more confidence to go and try new things. It has spread the message to focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t. VIVA
How much of an impact do you think the legacy of the Paralympics has had on the city? Have you seen an increase in participation levels?
MATT
Many care organisations around the city have definitely increased their interest in sports and physical activity as they have seen the benefits to the participants physically, mentally and socially. I think people in general are realising that there are sports available to which they will be suited and can achieve personal goals, big or small. VIVA
Do you feel the city offers good opportunities for those who suffer from a disability to get into sport? MATT
At the moment I think it’s too early to tell the impact in terms of regular participation but the structure and opportunities have improved and developed really well. The coordination of activities and partnership working has developed not only across the city but county wide. We are working together with organisation such as The Cresset, DIAL, Inspire Peterborough and Peterborough City Council to increase not only the number of opportunities but also the variety of opportunities.
