Thank you for taking time out from your busy schedule to speak with us Cinderella! How are you enjoying being the star of this year’s pantomime?
While you’re in Peterborough, have you had a chance to have a look at any other events happening in the city?
07 vivacity-peterborough.com
This issue we met up with Cinderella, star of the Key Theatre’s Christmas pantomime, who kindly agreed to be our guest editor.
CINDERELLA CINDERELLA
I’m really enjoying sharing my story with all the boys and girls of Peterborough. I’m glad that people of all ages can see that Prince Charming is out there somewhere!
I’m always very busy cleaning my father’s house and looking after my step-sisters, but I would definitely be keen to try my hand at some of the Museum’s Christmas workshops. VIVA
VIVA
What is your favourite moment in the pantomime?
Who will you be buying presents for this year? CINDERELLA
What treats does the pantomime have in store for the audience this year? CINDERELLA
Treats for the audience, you say? There’s the classic story revamped a little, a little bit of tinkling the ivories and — of course — lots of magic!
See page 20 to find out more about this year’s Christmas pantomime.

I’ll be getting lovely gifts for my father, my prince and my Fairy Godmother (I’ll leave it under her favourite tree in the garden and she’ll collect it!) If they continue to behave, my step-sisters might receive a little something too!

Definitely meeting my Fairy Godmother – she is like a guardian angel to me!

PETERBOROUGH LIDO’S SUMMER SUCCESS The summer of 2013 saw over 21,000 people visit the Peterborough Lido on Bishops Road, recording the highest attendance figures since 2006. The newly refurbished outdoor pool hosted a variety of family fun activities, which thanks to the good weather were extremely popular. The Lido also received plenty of positive feedback on its new onsite café. Bring on Summer 2014!
LIDO HOSTS ITS FIRST AQUATHLON Vivacity hosted Peterborough’s first ever Aquathlon in September 2013 at the Peterborough Lido and surrounding footpaths. The competitors completed a 2.5k Run, 400m Swim and another 2.5k Run. The first person across the finish line was Simon Parkers in 26 minutes 58 seconds, with every competitor who finished receiving a winner’s trophy. Don’t worry if you missed out, as the Lido is planning to host another Aquathlon in September 2014.

The national award was created to recognise work involving volunteers within an archive service. Judges praised the Forty Years On project as being “Transformational for a small and relatively young archive service”, and the initiative for “turning the service’s largest collection into the core inspiration it should be.”
Diane Card submitted photos of Brownies enjoying an event she organised at Flag Fen for the exhibition. She said “I enjoyed giving the girls the opportunity to find out about the world around them and the wonders in their own back yard. The girls loved finding the different colours of nature at Flag Fen.”

Vivacity’s Forty Years On Project was recognised by the National Archive Volunteering Awards in September 2013, receiving praise from the judges for the work the project has done to investigate and record the history of Peterborough’s development as a city.
‘We Discover, We Grow’ explores how Girlguiding volunteers from Peterborough have charted their own inspirational journeys of discovery and growth while facilitating opportunities for girls and young women to do the same. From walks in the park to treks across the desert, the experiences they have created for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and other adult volunteers have literally taken them all over the world.

Don’t miss the chance to discover more about Peterborough’s rapid expansion, from 1968 onwards, in the Forty Years On exhibition at Peterborough Museum. There will be an opportunity to listen to radio adverts, which were part of the media campaign to attract newcomers to the city. An original Bakelite telephone will enable visitors to listen to audio clips of long-term residents and people that relocated to Peterborough from across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth as part of the mass migration to the ‘New Town’. See items representing the era, including the iconic Chopper bike, a Soda Stream and games that were manufactured in
local factories, along with original documents, maps and photographs, depicting this exciting period in Peterborough’s history. There will be a children’s dressing-up area set against the backdrop of the music and fashions of the time! Vivacity Archives The culmination of the Forty Years On project will be an online education resource designed for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils, which will also be available for iPads and mobiles. The resource uses archive material and oral histories from people that were part of the expansion. There will also be over 150 oral histories available to listen to in the Vivacity Archives when the

project closes early next year. The project exhibition is a result of a unique partnership between the Vivacity Archives Service and Eastern Angles Theatre Company. To date 115 volunteers have worked on the project, cataloguing boxes of information from the Peterborough Development Corporation, and conducting and transcribing over 150 oral history interviews. The project has also produced a touring exhibition which was on display at selected venues across the city earlier this year. The material was recently used by Eastern Angles to produce an innovative musical documentary ‘Parkway Dreams’.

KEY THEATRE CHRISTMAS IS COMING
The first flurries of festivity are set by the sounds of Christmas: Ella Fitzgerald singing Sleigh Ride and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas or Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, Frank Sinatra singing Let It Snow and I’ll be Home For Christmas and of course Nat King Cole’s Christmas Song. These great songs are all brought to you in the brand new show What A Wonderful Christmas (28 Nov) by the UK’s new stars of British jazz, The Bateman Brothers Jazz Band. You may think you know the most famous Dickensian Christmas story, but you will never have heard it like this. James Hyland reprises one of the greatest one-man shows of all time in his award-winning production of A Christmas Carol — As told by Jacob Marley (deceased) (7 Dec). Told from the perspective of Scrooge’s deceased business partner, this critically acclaimed theatrical adaptation delivers thrills, chills and excitement aplenty for all age groups. A seasonal super-group makes a welcome visit to the Key when we welcome The Albion Christmas Band (11 Dec) to shift your holiday spirit into overdrive! This classic line-up performs a special winter-themed repertoire of traditional English songs, tales and tunes and maybe even a bit of Morris dancing! Finally, The Locrian Ensemble are firmly established as one of Britain’s most popular touring groups, and their Christmas show, Carols by Candlelight (13 Dec) is the hottest ticket in their calendar. They are joined by the evergreen Jill Washington, West End star soprano of Phantom of the Opera. This magical evening will be the best Christmas present you can give!

At your local library Chill out for Christmas, with more mayhem from the Ice Age characters!
Did you know the Christmas tree only became popular in Victorian times? How would you have celebrated Christmas in the past?
Scrat’s nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he’s been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences - a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid.
Find out how Peterborough celebrated the festive season in the Victorian period by using real newspaper articles and images from over a hundred years ago. Discover all this and more at your local library!
In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.
Plus make some Christmas crafts including a Victorian card, tree decorations, cracker and hat.
Certificate U. Duration 93 minutes. There will be a short interval half way through.
