woman strode up to me at an event and gave me a warm smile. “I’m Adwoa. My son looks up to you. He wants to create jobs and help people just like you,”. Until that time I had forgotten for a brief moment what it felt like to have someone to look up to…to be motivated by the values, aspirations and drive of others. Her son is not alone – not by a long shot. Everybody needs someone to look up to. Over the years however, many men have taken this responsibility for granted and have as a result diminished outlook on the relevance of the role of men in shaping society through family. The Ghana Prisons Service reported this year that male population in prisons make up about 98% of the total population. This alone is enough reason for society to rise up and intervene. Celebrating men who have set themselves apart is critically important. Platforms such as the EXCLUSIVE MEN OF THE YEAR (EMY) AWARDS, that celebrate responsibility, great endeavour and achievements of men are great ways to mentor younger ones to become better people for the good of society. I am therefore happy to support such great initiative – EMY AWARDS – to honour and celebrate distinguished men on every Father’s Day by projecting such achievers and trail blazers as positive role models. The achiever will be celebrated and the hopeful will be inspired to work hard to be an achiever. This edition of the Exclusive Men’s Magazine profiles the award winning men from several disciplines from the 2016 EMY Awards, and indeed our ultimate woman as well. Great and unique individual stories with a common theme – PERSEVERANCE. Celebrating greatness to inspire greatness. You too can become great like these winners. Read their stories and be inspired. The world is yours!

any global calendar events are rather nominally celebrated this part of the world. Father’s Day is one such; EMY AWARDS is changing all that. The EMY AWARDS places no small importance on the need to propel potential to achievement and therefore has raised the stakes up to the limits, completely above bar. This award is settling for no less than PRESTIGE AND EXCLUSIVITY, the benchmark for executing this event. Every Father’s Day, the organizers of this event, EXCLUSIVE MEN’S MAGAZINE and CARBON AV, will seek out men of unquestionable integrity and dedication, acknowledged by family, community and country, from diverse fields of endeavor, for their sterling qualities and accomplishment in Ghana and its diaspora. The tagline for the EMY AWARDS GH is INSPIRING GREATNESS. This project is guided by a philosophy of greatness, which is captured in this perennial poem by 19th century American Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. “The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow~

The award trophy is inspired by “the thinker”; a sculptural masterpiece by the renowned french sculptor françois-augusterené rodin (12 november 1840 – 17 november 1917). Although rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture and desired academic recognition, he was never accepted into paris’s foremost school of art. However by 1900, he was a world-renowned artist. Wealthy private clients sought rodin’s work and he kept company with a variety of high-profile intellectuals and artists, a man who dared to be different. Our color DNA is composed of Black, Gold and Platinum. Black denotes the commonality of man and the universality of purpose. Platinum has remarkable resistance to corrosion and is therefore considered a noble metal, the symbol for resilience and determination. Gold is symbolic of honor, maturity, wisdom, greatness, success, longevity endurance and perfection. The color DNA represents the rise from obscurity to achievement. …THOUGH I HAD BIG DREAMS, I NEVER KNEW I’LL GET THIS FAR BUT GOD HAS MADE ALL THINGS POSSIBLE…I’M OVERJOYED TO SEE MY 50TH BIRTHDAY,” HE SAID.

32 | www.emmghana.com

Born Osei Kwame in 1962 at Agona Wiamoase in the Ashanti region, but affectionately called ‘Kwame Despite’, he started life as a petty trader, dealing in music cassettes, padlocks, feeding bottles and other merchandise at Dunkwa-Offinso. After years of painful struggle in the village to make it in life, he joined other friends to seek greener pastures in Lagos, Nigeria. He returned home to Ghana in 1983 with millions of other Ghanaian refugees who had been forced to flee Nigeria due to the political tension in the West African country. And guess what? He returned from Nigeria with only a chain-saw machine and a trident cassette player. He started a timber contracting business with the chain-saw machine but fate dealt a cruel hand on him when the machine was crushed by a falling tree on his first business trip. Undeterred, he turned to his cassette selling trade until he resolved to solidify his vision to diversify his business.

THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS To demonstrate his singular support for the local music industry which was on a rapid decline then, and also put Ghanaian culture above all else, he went into radio and established the now famous Peace FM in 1999 at Mile 7 Junction. The station’s experimentation with the Akan language worked to perfection as radio listeners in search of local content jettisoned stations which were broadcasting only in the Queen’s language for the 104.3frequency. No doubt PeaceFM has endeared itself to the ordinary Ghanaian by bringing information to them in their mother tongue, a language they can relate to and understand. He also believed that the establishment of the radio station would not only educate Ghanaians, but offer an alternative channel for advertising and general marketing of goods and services. By dint of hardwork and the Grace of God, the radio business began to thrive culminating in the setting up of Hello FM in Kumasi and Okay FM in Accra and peacefmonline.com.

Abenkwan, NEAT Hausa Koko, NEAT Diary Products), UTV, Best Point Savings and Loans, Best Assurance and many others. Speaking recently in an exclusive interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on PeaceFM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, Mr. Osei Kwame was full of gratitude to God for his current state of well-being considering his lowly beginnings. “…though I had big dreams, I never knew I’ll get this far but God has made all things possible…I’m overjoyed to see my 50th birthday,” he said. Asked who Osei Kwame really is, the gentle and unassuming CEO of the DGC described himself as a humble, quiet and a hardworking man, who does his possible best not to direct unnecessary attention to himself and also stay away from trouble. He expressed his appreciation to his family, friends and everyone who in diverse ways played a role in his life. “Let me also laud the efforts of all my untiring workers for their commitment and dedication towards making the Despite Group of Companies a success…I want to advise the youth to persevere, work

hard and never give-up…I am very careful dealing with the weak and poor because anything can happen at any moment and situations change,” he said.CREDIT:www. peacefmonline.com

PHILANTHROPY Dr Osei Kwame Despite amongst many others is a well known and respected Philanthropist. Every year (mostly during Christmas), he surprise thousands of bereaved men and women who have lost either their husband or wife with items worth over millions of cedis across the Country. Among the items usually dished out are cars, bags of rice, sugar Deep freezers, Samsung LED TVs, Prolux LED TVs, Smartphones, dozens of Nike Sneakers, Dresses, Standing Fans, Microwaves, Container loads of This Way Drinks, Blenders, Wax Prints and an undisclosed amount of money.

Togbe subsequently lectured in Economics and Accounting at Sokoto State Polytechnic’s School of Management Studies in Nigeria (1985-1987).

EARLY WORKING LIFE

BACK TO SCHOOL

Because of lack of financial resources, Togbe was unable to take up offers of admission to The Wharton School of The University of

Pennsylvania (1984 and 1985) and admission with fellowship awards to Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business (1984 and 1985). After committing his scanty resources to the pursuit of his Wharton and Stanford aspirations, Togbe was unable to file any applications in 1986. However, he was awarded a substantial fellowship by Yale University. So Togbe finally received his MBA from the Yale School of Management in May 1989.

SELF EMPLOYMENT In 1989 he returned to Ghana, accepting an appointment as a lecturer at the School of Administration, University of Ghana. He taught Financial Accounting (BSc) and Accounting Theory (MBA) until 1994. During that time he co-founded Databank Financial Services, Ltd. At the end of 1993 he left Databank and founded Strategic African Securities (SAS), also a stock brokerage

firm. Togbe is currently the CEO of Strategic Initiatives Ltd., a private equity and portfolio investment firm that he founded in 1999. Togbe is a member of the board of directors of the following organizations: • Aluworks Ltd., an aluminum rolling mill • Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Ltd., Ghana’s premier football club • Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s central bank • Navigator Communications & Technology Co., Ltd. • Pioneer Kitchenware Ltd. (Chairman), a portfolio and private equity investment firm • Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd., an independent power generating company He is also the founder of Navigator Communications & Technology Co., Ltd. and

co-founder of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Ltd. Sunon Asogli Power aims to mitigate the tension in power supply in Ghana and is building a 560MW gas-steam combined cycle power generation plant in Kpone, Ghana.

PHILOSOPHY Togbe’s outlook is influenced by a set of beliefs. Among them is his belief that success should be measured not only by the level one has attained, but also by the obstacles one had to overcome while trying to succeed. He sees difficulties as part of life. To him, a new obstacle is only another challenge, and a life that is not tested is not worth living. Togbe has a positive attitude. In the conduct of his business, therefore, his focus is on the opportunities, not the difficulties. He believes that success requires hard work, imagination, honesty, altruism, and absolute commitment to one’s chosen career.

FATHERHOOD

Why

DADS Matter

f

or decades, psychologists and other researchers assumed that the mother-child bond was the most important one in a kid’s life. They focused on studying those relationships, and however a child turned out, mom often got the credit — or blame. Within the last several decades, though, scientists are increasingly realizing just how much dads matter. Just like women, fathers’ bodies respond to parenthood, and their parenting style affects their kids just as much, and sometimes more, than mom’s. “We’re now finding that not only are fathers influential, sometimes they have more influence on kids’ development than moms,” said Ronald Rohner, the director of the Center for the Study of Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection at the University of Connecticut.

48 | www.emmghana.com

FEELING DAD’S LOVE Rohner and his colleagues recently reviewed decades of studies on parental acceptance and rejection across the globe. Unsurprisingly, parents have a major effect on their kids. When kids feel rejected or unloved by mom and dad, they’re more likely to become hostile, aggressive and emotionally unstable. Parental rejection also can lead to low self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy and negative worldviews. This is true for both parents, Rohner told LiveScience. But in some cases, dad is a more important factor than mom. Behavior problems, delinquency, depression, substance abuse and overall psychological adjustment are all more closely linked to dad’s rejection than mom’s, Rohner said. By the same token, dad’s love is sometimes a stronger influence for children than mom’s, the researchers found. “Knowing that kids feel loved by their father is a better predictor of young adults’ sense of well-being, of happiness, of life satisfaction than knowing about the extent to which they feel loved by their

mothers,” Rohner said. He and his colleagues detailed their findings in May in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Review.

INFLUENCE AND PERSISTENCE The research looked only at male father figures, so while the dad in question doesn’t have to be biological, the results don’t apply to absentee fathers. Rohner and his colleagues aren’t certain why fathers sometimes outshine moms in their kids’ development. In every family, Rohner said, there is a member with more influence and prestige — the person who might set the weekend plans, for example. In families where dad is that person, his actions might make the greatest impression on the children. In those cases, “kids tend to pay more attention to what dad does and dad says than mom, and he’s going to have more influence,” Rohner said. Dads may also be responsible for endowing their kids with “stick-with-itness” that serves them well in life. In a

study of two-parent families published in the Journal of Early Adolescence, Brigham Young University researchers found that dad’s parenting style is more closely linked to whether teens will exhibit persistence than mom’s parenting. A persistent personality, in turn, was related to less delinquency and more engagement in school over time. The magic fathering style that was linked to such persistence in kids is called authoritative parenting, a style characterized by warmth and love, accountability to the rules (but explanations of why those rules exist), and age-appropriate autonomy for kids, the researchers found. “Our study suggests fathers who are most effective are those who listen to their children, have a close relationship, set appropriate rules, but also grant appropriate freedoms,” study researcher Laura PadillaWalker told LiveScience. It’s not clear why dads might be more important than moms in teaching perseverance, but it’s possible that fathers simply focus on this trait more, while moms teach traits like gratitude and kindness, Padilla-Walker said. [5 Ways to Foster SelfCompassion in Your Child]

BEING A GOOD DAD Fortunately for dads, biology is there to back up good parenting. Hormonal studies have revealed that dads show increased levels of oxytocin during the first weeks of their babies’ lives. This hormone, sometimes called the “love hormone,” increases feelings of bonding among groups. Dads get oxytocin boosts by playing with their babies, according to a 2010 study published in the journal Biological Psychiatry. Fatherhood also leads to declines in testosterone, the “macho” hormone associated with aggressive behavior, according to research published last year in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. This change is stronger the more involved a dad is with his baby’s care, suggesting that it may reduce a man’s risk-taking drive and encourage nurturing and domesticity. What’s most important, Padilla-Walker said, is that fathers realize they matter. Quality time is important, she said. “That doesn’t mean going on fancy vacations, it can be playing ball in the backyard or watching a movie with your

kids,” she said. “Whatever it is, just make yourself available and when you’re with your children, be with them.” These important tips will be helpful

1

2

Cherish your time with them. One thing that will amaze you is how quickly the years will fly. The time you have with them is short and precious — make the most of it. Spend as much time as you can with them, and make it quality, loving time. Try to be present as much as possible while you’re with them too — don’t let your mind drift away, as they can sense that. It gets easier. Others may have different experiences, but I’ve always found the first couple of months the most difficult, when the baby is brand new and wants to feed at all hours of the night and you often have sleepless nights and walk around all day like zombies. It gets easier, as they get a regular sleeping pattern. The first couple of years are also a lot more demanding than later

CITIZEN GHANA AWARD ANAS AREMEYAW

ANAS GHANAIAN UNDERCOVER INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST

CREDIT: www.anasaremeyawanas.org

66 | www.emmghana.com

A

Anas Aremeyaw Anas is a Ghanaian undercover investigative journalist. Due to his work, he is anonymous and his anonymity is in fact an important tool in his investigations. His undercover investigations focus primarily on issues of human rights abuse (especially child abuses) and corruption. He has carried out undercover investigations in many countries and in different continents. His primary focus remains in Sub Saharan Africa. His human right investigations deals with creating a better life and providing equal opportunities for children and adults being abused to grow whilst his corruption investigations focus on Government employees and executives who instead of working for the people rather loot the national kitty and thus deprive citizens of essential amenities that would create a better standard of living for all.

MY JOURNALISM IS A PRODUCT OF MY SOCIETY. I HAVE LOOKED CAREFULLY AT THE SOCIETY THAT I BELONG [TO] AND I HAVE THOUGHT THAT NAMING, SHAMING AND JAILING IS THE BEST

Anas is unlike many others in his field and his work goes beyond any sense of traditional journalism. Writing from a metropolitan newsroom, conducting phone interviews and attending press conferences is in no way comparable to committing oneself to a West African mental institution or going undercover as an elderly woman or a rock on the side of a road. The 30-something year old Ghanaian journalist goes to great lengths to protect his identity and personal details. Despite being one of the most famous men in Ghana, few have seen his face or could pick him out of a crowd. Pictures of him out of disguise show blurred or censored boxes over his face, and he covers his face with string of beads during speaking engagements. He also says that he took cocaine while in the hospital to fit in amongst the other patients. His extreme methods not only educate, they can produce change: after his psychiatric hospital story was published in a paper he co-owns, The New Crusading Guide, some of the problems he exposed were resolved. His story on child prostitution from his time in the aforementioned brothel helped break two major sex trafficking rings in 2008. Making a difference is the reason that Anas continues to risk his life to report these stories. “There’s no point in doing journalism that doesn’t lead to society’s progression. Journalism is about your people,” he says. “My journalism is a product of my society. He says that he studied conditions thoroughly before the sting. To get admitted, he complained of heat in his head, spoke in an extremely repetitive fashion and gave vague answers to direct questions—a range of symptoms that could be attributed to a number of psychiatric disorders. Once inside the hospital, Anas documented his experiences using hidden cameras, passing off memory cards of footage to his colleagues when they would pose as visitors. “Patients were being physically abused, drugs like cocaine and heroin were being

SHEIK OSMAN NUHU

SHARUBUTU NATIONAL CHIEF IMAM, GHANA

CREDIT: www.sonsetfund.org

D

r. Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu was born in Accra Old Fadama in mid April, 1924 to prominent and reputable parents. He studied under his father, the late Sheikh Nuhu Sharubutu, a pious mother, late Ayishatu abbas and his uncle, the late Sheikh Mazanwaje Abbas, who was the National Imam at the time. His parents taught him Qur`anic recitation and reading with the correct intonation as well as essay writing in Arabic. By the age of 12 (twelve), Mr. Osmanu had mastered the recitation of the whole of the Holy Qur`an and had become one of the youngest Muslim at the time to have memorized numerous verses and chapters of it. When the father, Sheikh Nuhu, realized the potentials of his son, he decided to send him to a new learning environment in Kumasi where he studied under various Islamic scholars. On the return of young Osmanu to Accra, his uncle, Sheikh Muhammad Mazawaje Abbas, introduced him to Tijaniyyah special programmes for meditation. He continued working with the movement under the grand pioneer, Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass Kaola of Senegal. Sheikh Ibrahim was the foremost leader of the Tijaniyyah movement of the 20th century. Sheikh Ibrahim thought Mr. Osmanu the deeper spiritual aspects of Sufism practice,

the secret techniques and the rudiments of mysticism as well as other esoteric features of it. These exposures smoothly paved the way for young Osman to become a true leader in the Tijaniyyah Movement. In 1974, after lengthy debates and consultations among the country`s traditional Muslim and tribal chiefs, scholars and other religious leaders, it was agreed by consensus that Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu should be appointed the Deputy National Imam of the Republic of Ghana. However, Sheikh Osman turned down the offer of appointment with the excuse that he was a professional Islamic teacher and educator with over 20 students under his care at the time and he was concerned about their future growth and development. It was later and after further persuasions and persistence by the Islamic teachers that Sheikh Osmanu realized that the appointment was a divine call for him to serve Islam and the Muslim communities. In 1993, he was appointed the National Chief Imam of the Republic of Ghana. He succeeded his cousin, Sheikh Mukhtar Abbas, the then National Imam who was ill and physically weak. Throughout his life, Sheikh Osman has had a reputation for promoting Islamic education and encouraging the establishment of educational institutions. Currently there are 7(seven)

educational institutions in the Greater Accra region which have been established and owned by Sheikh Osmanu himself and managed by various individuals. He undertakes some teaching assignments at the institutions. He has, in the past 15 ( fifteen) years, pioneered the establishment of 10 other educational institutions in all the 10(ten) regions of the country. Sheikh Osmanu has been involved in the establishment of institutions and organizations for providing services that address the humanitarian needs and empowerment of the Muslim youth in and outside Ghana. He has personally sponsored hundreds of needy Muslim children mostly from the disadvantaged and vulnerable Muslim communities in Ghana. In sum, Dr. Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu comes from a pedigree of Islamic Scholars and leaders. He has continued with this heritage and has, in the process, distinguished himself as a great Islamic leader. He has been engaged in promoting Muslim education, setting up various Islamic schools and encouraging the integration of Islamic knowledge and practice with secular education. He is, today, the representative of the Muslim face in national affairs and continues to support development programmes that sensitize people to their social responsibilities and build bridges between Islam and other religions. The result is that he is a member of the National Peace Council.

ccra friendship club was formed in the sixth month, in the year 1981 by a group made up of business executives, senior military officers, professionals and up and coming young gurus who mooted the idea of forming an association primarily to support each other in times of need and also to keep themselves fit for health purposes and entertainment. They were simply each brother’s keeper. Very soon every young executive in Accra at that time had been attracted to becoming part of this club due to the exhibition of their unity and supportive program. With the kaneshie sports complex now known as Azumah nelson sports complex, as its adopted keep-fit grounds, they train once a week on Sundays and occasionally invite other sister clubs for football matches and entertainment. Accra friendship club soon became the “real deal” in Accra and has continued to grow from strength to strength. Its achievements include donation to charity and support of worthy programs and causes in society. Their most recent charity work was when they donated cash and items worth over Ghc 50,000 to the eye of the lord orphanage owned by a blind man. They also organized a party for the orphans and the members themselves served the orphans with food and drinks at the party. Few executives currently run the club with Mr Paa Gyimah Genfi as its chairman, their next charity program will be offering free screening for breast and prostate cancer. This is part of their efforts to create cancer awareness. We can only congratulate Accra friendship club and urge them to do more for society. Ayeeko!!!! Accra friendship club!

ast Legon Executive Fitness Club was formed about a year ago with the objective of bringing Business Executives in the middle age bracket who mostly reside in the East Legon Area together for a common purpose of keeping fit, socializing and networking. Dr. Osei Kwame (Despite) among a few other founders mooted the idea and began exercising as a small group at dawn on selected days in the week. From a humble beginning with only 12 members, the Club can now boast of a membership of over 120 within a short period of being in existence. Dr Osei Kwame is acclaimed as the Founding Father of the Club with Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong as its first and current President. Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays have been selected as training days for the Club. The training mainly consists of aerobics, exercises and a street walk. The training normally begins at 5 am with aerobics for about 10 minutes at the Club House opposite Yeboah Hospital before a walk down selected routes in East Legon, for another 40 minutes and finally back to the Club house for 10 minutes of stretch exercises to close at 6am. Through the benevolence of the Club, an ultra Modern One Storey building worth over GHC 800,000 has been constructed to serve as the District Headquarters for the Ghana Police Service in the East Legon area and it was commissioned and handed over to the IGP on 22nd of April 2016.It has facilities such as offices, conference room, washrooms and kitchen. GROOMING

Fragrance Getting The Most Out Of Your

Owning fragrance is a bit like owning a smartphone: you have to understand how it operates to get the most out of it. You also need to know how to look after your investment. With this in mind, we offer some tips on how to maximize the impact, longevity and overall effect of your

78 | www.emmghana.com

signature scent, along with a few on how to ensure it smells just as good years after opening. The objective? To ensure that whatever fragrance you wear always smells fantastic‌

1.

GIVE THINGS TIME “Wearing a fragrance is a bit like building a relationship with someone,” says perfumer Azzi Glasser, who created Topman’s acclaimed No.16 and No. 27 fragrances and whose private clients include some of the world’s best known celebrities. “Sometimes you have to get to know a scent and ‘live with it’ for a while before fully appreciating it. You can often smell a fragrance and not like it but if you give it time, it often grows on you and you eventually end up loving it.” Always give a new fragrance the benefit of the doubt – even if at first you don’t like it.

2.

REMOVE THE CLUTTER Fragrance is just like food: some things go together naturally, others clash like the Titans. “Most men tend to mix it all up when it comes to scents: shampoo, shower gel, deodorant, hair gel, and then on top of it all; cologne,” says British perfumer and fragrance aficionado Roja Dove. “That’s almost like saying ‘I love ties’ and then wearing every one you own all at once.” Body sprays and antiperspirants are one of the main offenders when it comes to clashing, so ensure your fragrance doesn’t have to fight for precedence with them by opting for fragrance-free or minimally scented products like Clinique’s Roll On Anti-Perspirant Deodorant, Sanex’s Dermo Sensitive Roll-On Antiperspirant or Lab Series’ Anti-Perspirant Deodorant Stick.

3.

MOISTURISE Generally speaking, the oilier and better hydrated your skin the longer a fragrance will last on it. So if you to want to increase the longevity of your scent, use a fragrance-free moisturiser a few minutes before applying. If you’re skin tends to be on the dry side be prepared to reapply your fragrance a little more often.

4.

CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION The wrists and behind the ears may be the traditional spots to apply fragrance, but according to Dove the area behind the ears produces a lot of sebum, which can alter the way a fragrance smells. The burn rate of the fragrance will also be accelerated in these places because they’re above pulse points, so your scent may not last as long as you would like. Better places to spray, in my experience, are the chest and biceps as your scent will be trapped against the skin in these places but its presence will still be detectable as you move. For maximum impact, Dove suggests

5.

applying a little in the dip of the collarbone too.

SPRAY DON’T SPLASH Undecided whether to opt for a splash or a spray? Go for the latter. Not only do spray mechanisms give you greater control in terms of fragrance application, they prevent the fragrance becoming exposed to the air and contaminated by bacteria from your hands. There’s no chance of costly spillages either.

6.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE Never hold the bottle too close to your skin when applying fragrance. If you do you’ll just end up with it concentrated in one tiny ‘puddle’. Instead, hold the nozzle around six or seven inches away from you and then spray. That way the fragrance will hit a larger area of skin and coverage will be more even. “Alternatively, apply some into the palm of your hand before wiping it over the upper body,” says Dove. “This will help the fragrance affix to the skin better.”

7.

DON’T OVER DO IT According to Debrett’s A-Z of Modern Manners – the Holy Bible of etiquette – a fragrance should never be overpowering. “People don’t want to be able to smell you before they see you,” it politely points out, and with good reason – no-one should be able to smell you beyond arm’s length (a distance known as your personal ‘scent circle’). To ensure you don’t overdo it, apply no more than three sprays. If you accidentally apply too much dilute the fragrance by patting your skin with a warm wet towel.

8.

LAYER UP Layering – combining products from a fragrance’s body range to create a more powerful, longer lasting and all-over scent – is a great way to maximise the impact of your favourite eau de toilette. Think of these body products as your eau de toilette’s support team. Lots of fragrances (Aramis Classic, Acqua di Parma Colonia, Paco Rabanne 1 Million and Tom Ford Oud Wood amongst them) now have ancillary shower products, deodorants and aftershave balms, so if they’re available use them. There’s no risk of products clashing if you do either.

9.

PROTECT YOUR ASSETS Opinion differs on how long a fragrance lasts once opened – from eighteen months to five years to, well, pretty much forever. Much depends on how you look after your asset. Fragrances are much like fine wines or

priceless paintings: they need to be treated with respect and stored correctly. To ensure your fragrances stay in tip top condition, keep them away from extreme temperature fluctuations and strong sunlight. The best way to protect them is to keep them in their original boxes and somewhere cool.

10.

HAVE A SPECIAL OCCASION SCENT There’s a reason fragrances are so good at transporting us back to a particular time, place or feeling: our sense of smell is handled by the same ancient part of the brain that deals with emotions and memory. So if you associate a fragrance with a particularly good memory, utilize it to bring back those emotions when you need to and make it your ‘lucky’ fragrance.

11.

CHILL! If you want to maximise the refreshing qualities of fresh, citrusy summer scents like 4711, Paul Smith Sunshine and Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male Summer fragrance, try keeping them in the fridge. It turns them into the perfect tonic when temperatures soar.

12.

STAY ON A WOMAN’S RIGHT SIDE Here’s a crafty trick if you’re wearing fragrance to impress women: manoeuvre yourself so you’re on her right side when talking to her. Why? Well, a study by the University of California discovered that, due to the way the brain is hard-wired, women tend to appreciate smells sniffed through their right nostril more than the left one.

13.

TAKE YOUR FRAGRANCE WITH YOU According to Roja Dove around 80 per cent of an eau de toilette’s fragrance will have the left the skin after about four hours, so to keep yours topped up you need to reapply. This is especially true for colognes which are superfresh but have even less staying power on the skin. The solution is to look out for travel sized (usually 30ml) versions of your favourite fragrance or to decant your favourite into a portable atomizer like the Travalo, which is pocket sized and easy to fill. Carry one with you and you’ll always smell your absolute best – wherever you are, whatever the time of day and whoever you’re with.

W LIFESTYLE

I

t’s Friday night, there are millions of men around the world with the same exact goal in mind for the night; to meet and attract women. Late weekend nights are competitive, everyone knows that, but have you ever considered that your chances are even lower due to the fact that women can already sense you’re only hitting on them? Women know exactly what a man’s intent is on the weekend. You approach her after moving around the bar with your hands in your pockets, and intend to come off as being genuinely interested. The problem is she knows what you’re after, and there’s no way to be casual about it. The conversation you’re hoping to have isn’t real, instead it’s forced. Most men venture out on the weekends thinking it’s the best time to meet women, and get

82 | www.emmghana.com

WHY YOU’LL NEVER PICK UP WOMEN ON THE WEEKENDS

into that mindset that they will. It makes sense considering there are flocks of women that always hit the town late at night. But the truth of the situation is, late weekend nights are the worst time to attract women. Honestly think about it, how are you going to start a casual conversation late at night on the weekend? She knows your hitting on her way before you even start trying to spark a conversation up. Chances are you’ve seen other men attempting to do it themselves with things like pick up lines, asking her about her sign, if she comes here often, the weather, or any other general remark. She genuinely doesn’t care, just like you aren’t genuinely being real or in the moment. So if the weekend is the worst time to meet when then what’s the best time? 6 to 8 o’clock at night on weekdays at the grocery store, and in the afternoon say 2 to

4. Consider that shopping for a late night meal after work at the grocery store is normal. Any woman you approach is going to get the perception that the conversation is casual. You make an observation about her, perhaps something she’s wearing like earrings. Or you make a comment about an item like yogurt in her shopping basket and ask her about it. The big takeaway here is to be in the moment and use observation to your advantage. In return, she becomes intrigued and you start to engage her. From there it’s simply a matter of listening and eventually she’ll close herself. Unlike the pickup situation during the weekend, this approach is casual, the conversation is real, and she’s doesn’t perceive you as hitting on her. You start to develop an emotional bond with her, and you talk about real things that interest her.

So take some time and go shopping a bit later in the day, or perhaps grab a coffee in the afternoon. You’ll notice a big comparison of how receptive and interested women are in meeting you verses during the weekend. If you need some more ideas for places, try the dry cleaner, or local shops and fairs. Your chances at attracting women during those moments will always work in your favor as long as you’re not forcing yourself to meet women in the first place. Be casual, make observations in the present, and talk about real things. If you do this you’ll never have a problem meeting women ever again, nor will you have any excuse for being single.

W

MAKE IMPRESSIONS BY TREATING LIFE LIKE A STOCK PORTFOLIO

Y

You’ve got to stop looking at instant gratification in whatever you do.

our dating and personal life in general is like a giant portfolio; if you stop for a moment and look at it that way. You’re out on a Saturday and you want to go out and meet women, but here’s the deal, everybody you meet may not pay dividends today. You may meet a woman today who has a boyfriend but you had a great conversation with. Three months later you run into her again, and she remembers you because you were a cool guy. You then look at her and go, “how’s that boyfriend”? In return she goes, “We broke up”. And there you have it, bingo the dividend paid off in the future. You might meet someone who you had a simple conversation with it, and you might think it means absolutely nothing, right. The conversation could be as simple as how’s the weather. Yet whatever it might be, you find out two weeks later all of the sudden, you run into her again and say, “Oh I remember you, I saw you two weeks ago”. And you get into longer conversations because maybe the first time you talked to her, she was rushed. She wasn’t open to a conversation, she was busy, or maybe she had something on her mind. You’ve got to stop looking at instant gratification in whatever you do. And you’ve got to start looking at life as a portfolio. Things will pay off now and things will pay off in the future. You might meet someone

today who pays off and you get a date right away. But you might also meet somebody tomorrow who pays off in the future, a month from now. Let’s look at it like sales because in sales you’re always building a funnel. You’re trying to call as many leads as you possibly can, but then what happens? They start paying off in the future, so everyday look at it as leads. Each person that you meet is another lead that may pay off in the future. It’s a really important mindset that most guys don’t understand or want to do. Most guys are just constantly looking for that instant gratification and not being nice to someone. They see a girl, they talk to her, the girl has a boyfriend, and they stop the conversation right away. Six months later they run into her, she remembers that he was the rude person who cut the conversation in mid sentence. And instead of being the cool guy, you’re someone who just ruined their chances. If you leave everybody with a great part of you, they’ll remember you. And if they remember you, they’ll want more of you in the future. And that’s what you’ve got to start looking at. Stop looking for instant gratification and look at life more like a stock portfolio, because we all know, we could all get rich overnight if our stock portfolio doubles. But we all know it takes time to double, so look at your personal life the same exact way.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Real Reason Older Men Like To Date Younger Women WHAT MAKES MEN ATTRACTED TO YOUNGER WOMEN? THE ANSWER MIGHT SURPRISE YOU. Admit it, when you see an older man who’s dating a much younger woman, you assume it’s because he must be going through some sort of mid-life crisis. His more youthful female companion may be more sexually attractive to him (making him feel younger in the process) and she probably doesn’t call him out on his issues like an older woman might. After all, young women are fun, free-spirited, and energetic and have a zest for life. This youthful energy is attractive to an older man who may be feeling his mortality. These are all the stereotypical reasons people tend to think older men love to date younger women. And while these things may be true for some men, the attraction is a little more complicated than that. When it comes down to it, a younger woman satisfies one of the most basic human needs: connection. This is a need that is different for men and women at different stages in their lives. Young adult women typically have more of a need for connection. While they will create careers, they also want to eventually

84 | www.emmghana.com

create a family. On the other hand, young adult men are more focused on the need for significance. They have relationships and start families, but their primary focus is figuring out a way to make it in the world. In young adult relationships, these needs are often in conflict, as the woman wants more intimacy and the man is focused on building his career. Older men and younger women share that same need for connection This is one of the cruel jokes of the dating world: younger men are focused on significance and younger women are focused

on connection. Somewhere around mid-life, there is a switch. At some point, an older man will realize he’s squandered his youth on the pursuit of power and may have neglected his family in the process. He is tired of the rat race and is seeking more connection. Simultaneously, an older woman is tired of putting herself second after her children and husband. She is ready to go back to school and pursue the career she put on hold for her family. This is another reason older men love to date younger women.

A YOUNG WOMAN IS COMPATIBLE WITH HIM IN THAT SHE IS ALSO SEEKING MORE CONNECTION. HE MAY EVEN BE THINKING OF STARTING A SECOND FAMILY WITH HER SO HE CAN “GET IT RIGHT” THIS TIME AROUND.

MAN OF THE YEAR

AGRICULTURE & TECHNOLOGY APOSTLE DR. KWADWO

SAFO FOUNDER KANTANKA AUTOMOBILES/ KRISTO ASAFO CHURCH

96 | www.emmghana.com

A

postle Kwadwo Safo was born on 26th August 1948 at Bekwai in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. After basic school, he attended the Ghana Technical Works Institute in Kumasi. He thereafter had a three-year stint as a welder at the Volta Aluminum Company (VALCO), West African Metals and the French African Company. On the 3rd February, 1971 he founded his church, Kristo Asafo (Christ

Reformed Church). Kristo Asafo is famous for its philanthropy and service to the needy in society since inception.

MISSION: TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Apostle Safo and his Krsito Asafo church in recent times have been more famous in the multi-technology industry in Ghana and Africa as a whole. His mission is to empower black Africa through the application of appropriate technology and innovative science and to uplift the sunken image of the African continent. As a musical enthusiast, he started with the fabrication of Electrical Drums with brain units, Loud Speakers, Professional Mixing Console, Amplifiers, Pre-Amps and Seven-Stringed Bass Guitars. He then moved on to Sewing and Embroidery Machines and within some few years leapfrogged to the manufacture of a multi-purpose mobile Block Molding Machine capable of producing 16 blocks at a time, a 26’ Flat Screen Sensor Television (powered by human breadth and turned off by the wave of hand). He manufactured his first automobile “Kantanka Saloon” in 1998 and a Cross Country 4 - Wheel Drive “Kantanka Onantefo I” in 2006. In June 2007, he released a newer model of “the Kantanka Onantefo II” which was driven throughout most parts of the country for testing. On 30th December 2007, Apostle Safo outdoored a 26 feet long Limo styled Cross Country “Kantanka Obrempon” at the church’s 27th Annual Charity & Technology Fair at Awoshie in Accra, Ghana. He on the same day launched an Excavator which he locally manufactured. He has made a variety of industrial machinery - Weed Slashers, Street Cabbage Collectors, Spot Welding Machines and Automated Human Sensored WCs and Taps.

SERVICE TO MANKIND Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo is a special Man of God. He preaches the gospel and performs miracles within and outside the congregation of his church. But he reminds each and every one of the fact that: “miracle is not my mission”. He became more involved in philanthropy and contribution to charity from the very onset of Kristo Asafo. From single handedly feeding some of the stranded Ghanaian returnees from Nigeria in 1983 amidst bush fire and famine that ravaged

His good works and kind gestures have earned him awards from the government and countless institutions throughout the country. These include: • The Order of the Volta (Member Division) in 2007 • The Millennium Excellence Award, Best Philanthropist in the Humanitarian Category in 2006 • He was appointed Member of the National Council for Tertiary Education in 2006 • Associate Member of the Ghana Institute of Engineers in 2004 • The Industrial Pinnacle Award, Winner of Gold in Industrial Development Engineering in 2004 • The Industrial Pinnacle Award, Winner of Platinum Service to Humanity in 2004 • The Industrial Pinnacle Award, Winner of Platinum in the Agric and Food Production Category in 2004 • State Honor, Grand Medal (GM) Civil Division for Exemplary Leadership, Technology Ingenuity and Deep Concern for the Deprived in Society in 2000 • Charted Institute of Marketing, Special Award in Marketing Agricultural and Technological Skills through the Youth in 1999 • Honorary Doctor of Law Degree from the University of Ghana in 1999

the country at that time, he donated to Rehabilitation Centers, Social Welfare Centers, Prisons, Children’s Homes and other institutions throughout the country including the University of Ghana - Legon. In spite of his enormous contribution to society, he keeps emphasizing the fact that, “philanthropy is not my mission on earth”.

IDEOLOGY He is a patriotic Africa and strong believer in the creation of wealth within the borders of each country rather than relying on foreign assistance. For him, no empowerment is as effective as self-empowerment and that the Blackman is capable of doing anything the White can do. Hardwork and perseverance are his most cherished words. He always encourages African that all hope is not lost, that wisdom is not obsolete, that the optimists have it and always have it, not because they are always right but because they are positive. He teaches that, the way to success is identifying talents, improving on them and applying same to the benefit of society. He believes that God created everyone in his own image; therefore, everyone is created for a purpose and has equal capabilities and abilities to redirect their destinies. The burden then is for us to identify that purpose and apply our abilities to the freedom of ourselves and to the His glory.

INVESTMENTS Apostle Safo is a man of few words and an optimist. As industrious and business minded as he is, he has invested in many businesses: Great Kosa Company Limited with various divisions and sub-divisions, Great Kosa Clinic, Modern Kosa Company Limited, Great Imperial Company Limited, Kristo Asafo Schools, Great Kosa Vision and Kristo Asafo Farms. At Gomoa Mpota in the Central Region of Ghana, he and his team of researchers are working tirelessly in all fields of innovative science and applied technology. Different types of home and electrical appliances, Sport Utility Vehicles, Excavators and many more industrial types of equipment are manufactured. He is currently constructing facilities which will be the epicenter of Research and Development of his real mission ‘the Redemption of Africa’ at his one hundred and eleven (111) acre land stretch at Gomoa

Mpota in the Central Region of Ghana. On that same stretch the African University of Technology will be built and the thunderous drum of ‘Africa re-awake’ which has started beating will continue to beat until the Star of Africa redeems Africa. God bless Africa.

CONCEALED IDENTITY Apostle Safo knew within himself and beforehand that he was a great man engulfed with wealth and technological know-how to redeem Africa but had just wanted to tell the world how God does His things. He has illustrated the fact, which great historians have always recognized, that mankind does not invariably progress by imperceptible steps but sometimes takes a giant leap, often under the dynamic divine force of a solitary outsized personality. When the time was due for him to launch his technological prowess, he leapfrogged traditional technological concepts and is now on the verge of re-writing history. He is one man who cut across all branches of technical and innovative professionalism.

BELIEF IN THE POWER OF APPLIED KNOWLEDGE His activities which transcend charity are beyond the comprehension of ordinary minds. Unlike other charismatic churches, Kristo Asafo (Christ reformed Church), apart from the believe we have in the trinity, also believe that the infinite intelligence that God has given to mankind is not limited to the one race and that by hard work and perseverance through science and technology as demonstrated by our visionary leader Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, the image of our abode will be redeemed and uplifted. Today, the Kristo Asafo has 137 branches in Ghana and one each in Verona, Italy, London in the United Kingdom and the United States. Today Apostle Safo and his Kristo Asafo has become the mouthpiece of every Ghanaian and African. Since its inception, Apostle Safo has donated to a lot of institutions, including the universities, prisons, orphanages, leprosarium, social welfares and hospitals. He has been the father of the poor and needy. His concern for humanity and his mission of

restoring Africa from its lost glory is glary.

REV STEVE

MENSAH GENERAL OVERSEER, CHARISMATIC EVANGELISTIC MINISTRY, CHRIST TO THE RURAL WORLD

102 | www.emmghana.com

Reverend Steve Mensah is the Founder and General Overseer of the Charismatic Evangelistic ministry headquartered at North Legon. This great Man of God rose from very humble beginnings to where he is today. Born in Accra to a police officer and a business woman, life wouldn’t seem to be smiling on him and his younger twin brother considering the fact that his parents divorced whilst they were very young, and this brought a lot of hardship to them. A student of St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary school, his dreams of being a doctor seemed dashed, but God had other plans. As a teenager coming from a broken home, he had to start working quite early to support himself and one day his elder brother Charles invited him for an all night prayer meeting which he was initially

HE IS A VERY RESULT – ORIENTED PASTOR WHO EMPHASISES HUMILITY IN THIS LIFE AND BELIEVES STRONGLY THAT THERE SHOULD BE A STRONG FOCUS ON THE POOR AND SICK IN THE RURAL AREAS OF THIS NATION GHANA; AS HE RIGHTLY PUTS IT, “ THIS IS THE WORK” reluctant to attend. The minister of God then, REV Enoch Agbozo, who is still alive today, prophesied greatness into his life to his utter amazement. It was pronounced that he would be a great man of God. This was something the young Steve Mensah could not grasp then but now every word spoken has come to pass and greater things are occurring. He fell into a deep relationship with God whilst with the Catholic Church then. As time went on he started going on very small evangelistic meetings to schools etc with his elder brother Charles and twin brother Stanley. A strong fellowship was born and after much prayer and dedication to the things of God, the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry was born. Ever since the 1990’s, when the fellowship

he headed on the Legon Campus was converted into a church, Rev. Steve Mensah has proven himself to be a simple and humble man who desires to do the work of God along with his able team of over 400 pastors now serving in various parts of Ghana and the world, and now partnered with missionaries from Germany, America, Nigeria, Italy and the United Kingdom. He is also the immediate past Chairman of the National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches-Ghana (NACCC), a position presently held by the Arch Bishop Duncan-Williams. Rev. Steve Mensah has a calling to the rural areas in Ghana and invests a lot of prayer, energy and money into massive crusades that sometimes sees thousands of people on a single night.

Characteristic of these crusades are the free medical care (involving as many as 70 to a 100 doctors) and free clothes and food distribution. Extreme medical cases are brought to Accra for further treatment. Basically he is a very result – oriented pastor who emphasises humility in this life and believes strongly that there should be a strong focus on the poor and sick in the rural areas of this nation Ghana; as he rightly puts it, “ THIS IS THE WORK”. He is married to Rev Mrs Jane Mensah and they have 4 children and 1 adopted son. He may not have been the doctor he desired to be but now we see that God had a bigger idea. REV Steve Mensah is now almost a household name and he has shown himself as one of the greatest philanthropist Ghana has ever known.

After missing that penalty kick, Gyan decided to take a break from International football. On 8 May 2012, he announced his return to the Black Stars team. In the final group match, he became the top African goal scorer in World Cup finals history by scoring the Black Stars’ equalizer in the 2-1to Portugal. Asamoah Gyan signed a contract extension at Al-Ain keeping him to the club until 2018 and making the highest paid footballer in Africa. WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE WATCH BREGUET GRANDE COMPLICATION MARIE-ANTOINETTE Here we are! The most expensive watch in the world 2016 is priced at $30.000.000($30M). It is a case watch not a wrist watch. So what makes this watch so costly? It was commissioned by an alleged lover of Marie Antoinette, the French queen. Work on the watch began in 1782 by Abraham-Louis Breguet and was finished in 1827 by his son, 4 years after his death.

The result, an amazing piece of design, class and technology containing every function that was possible at that time. Encased in gold, displaying the intricate mechanism running it, Breguet used sapphire to lower the friction within the piece. Marie Antoinette did not get to see the watch, since it was completed 34 years after her execution, but we can be sure she would’ve been impressed. The watch was stolen in the late 1900’s and retrieved only in 2007. Ever since, every top watch connoisseur wanted it. As of 2016 the watch is valued at least $30 Million. Currently the watch is secured at the L. A. Mayer museum so you can see it live if you’re in the area.

THE TREAT HER RIGHT CAMPAIGN IS AN ADVOCACY PLATFORM FROM EMYAWARDS AFRICA TO ENGAGE MEN IN DIALOGUE ON MATTERS OF DECENCY AND RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS WOMEN.

S

ince the days of affirmative action various pro gender agencies have on a global scale engaged society on very critical issues about gender abuse and discrimination. In the face of the great strides that have 6been made on awareness platforms and commendable structures, institutional reforms and measureable development in gender emancipation, some rather entrenched socio-religious positions virtually make some areas impervious to penetration.

For us at the EMYS secretariat, the underlying setback will always be the male or masculine mindset formed by tradition and religion which continues to favour gender bias and imbalance fueled by presumptions of female subservience. Women are NOT play things. Women are NOT punching bags. Women are NOT intellectually handicapped. Women are not LESSER than men in anything including station. Women are persons of essence no less than their complimentary gender. Educating the man and boy child is as crucial as opening the eyes of women and the girl child to a woman’s place of right and right of place, a position that’s perhaps compromised sometimes by the very woman for whom this agitation is being exploited. While this platform has hardly the space to delve into matters of grave sensitivity, the matter of esteem cannot be precluded by simple assumptions of male supremacy so called. The TREAT HER RIGHT campaign is a celebration of womanhood spearheaded by men to call everyman to order as we blaze a trail of candour in hammering home a simple message that men ought to stand and be counted responsible and ready to do their duty to the complimentary gender. The campaign will be carried across all media both old and new. A short clip, up to 10 seconds will feature gentlemen of note speaking about the rights of women to be treated right on television. There will also be social media, radio and outdoor rollout for this campaign where sponsors will be heavily associated and acknowledged.

Achievement comes on the wings of the creativity that flies greatness. Many polities thrive on their history chalked for them by great men and women who inspire them to aspire to the same great ideals that they pursued in time. F

or most men it’s not that they dread the process, in fact working out and getting exercise is actually enjoyable. But with things like surfing the internet, watching television shows, or even grabbing something to snack on, we lose focus on the path we need to be taking. In our minds we know we need to make the commitment to start picking up weights and moving our bodies. However what you might encounter is perhaps the biggest excuse most men will seem to put at the forefront of their brains. And what is that you might ask? It’s “I don’t have time”, or “I’m too busy to get around to going to the gym.” It’s understandable as every man has a busy lifestyle one way or another, but to accept it as being something that holds you back is well, unacceptable. Every day you wake up with the opportunity to achieve what you want to, and on the terms you want to. It takes a mental commitment coming from you as a man, because the reality of the situation is, most men genuinely do have extra free time. Maybe you’re not looking in the right places or perhaps you weren’t even aware of your options. Yet no matter what situation you happen to be stuck in, we’re going to give you some ideas on how to make going to the gym a reality on a busy schedule. Firstly before we jump into the ideas of what you do to add some flexibility to your schedule, it’s important that we go over what it means to truly have free time. For instance let’s use this example; let’s say someone in your family is rushed to the emergency room. For most family men their going to drop whatever their doing and set their sole focus on making it to the hospital as fast and as quickly as possible. In that situation we develop an overwhelming sense of motivation and dedication towards meeting this task. Perhaps a loved one’s life is on the line and you don’t want to miss a single moment that you don’t have to. Now you may be wondering, how exactly does that even relate to me getting to the gym, when the situation isn’t as dire? Well consider this, how much do you value your own health? If you answered the question like most men would, being in a higher regard, then you should want to spend every moment you can on treating your body the right way. You would value someone else’s life in a loving manner, but when it comes to your own, what reason do you have not to hold it within the same regard? Of course it comes down the responsibility, but the biggest challenge that prevents men from

hitting the gym in the first place is the lack of drive. Going back to the emergency story we mentioned, that influential boost that originally took over your mind, needs to somehow manage to find its way back into your daily lifestyle. But don’t let that confuse you, we’re not saying you have to live on the edge every single day, because once you starting going to the gym it doesn’t have to be like that. See, the moment you are able to harness that first jolt of motivation and step a single foot in the gym, is the very same moment you set yourself up for success. It’s like a rolling snowball, once you get started that motivation and drive you have simply builds and builds. But none of that really much matters if you don’t take that first leap of faith and the first footstep into the gym. As a man you must show up in order to get the process going. Remember it’s not a forced commitment, and although you should treat it like one, there’s absolutely nothing to fear in moving forward. No man ever became a powerful man that both he or his peers respected, without taking the role of leadership at some point. To put it straightforwardly, you need to be the leader of your own life.

Finding Time To Work Out

The Opportunities Once you have a sense of confidence and your motivation to become a better man is on point, you’ll need to find a way to fit exercise into your schedule. It’s simply a few hours a week, which is nearly nothing at all when compared to all of the other nonbeneficial things in most of our lives. Start by replacing your television time, internet time, or whichever you may feel is unneeded in your life presently. If you find yourself not already participating in those examples then let’s look into another approach. When you wake up in the morning you can always set the alarm clock an hour early. In the same manner when you come home from work you can always go to bed later in the night. If you want to get creative think about all the time you have during your lunch breaks at work. Or how about the weekends when you’re off work, or even on your free days away from the office.

Whichever route you go with, you can achieve your ideal male fitness goals with around 3 days per week. You don’t have to become a full resident of the gym, or quit your day job to get healthy or in shape. Instead it simply requires a reasonable amount of time dedicated towards improving yourself.

Rewards Of Exercise The Bodybuilding Experience

If you think bodybuilding’s best reward is the lean muscle you get from hitting the gym, you might be right. But like most successful men will say, it’s all about the experience and lifestyle. On day one you walk in the gym and leave sore, tired, battered and worn down to the floor. Your body hurts in subtle pain while you feel the urge to consume as much food as possible. You’ll want to consume the best whey protein for men, and do whatever it takes to recover. At first you start thinking of doubt but you muster up the courage to give it one more day and one more workout. The next time you’re surprised, it’s getting better, more enjoyable and it starts to become a hobby. Soon enough it becomes a passion, and one of the most positive and rewarding experiences taking over your life. You build an understanding that going to the gym doesn’t mean you’re just building muscle, because you’re building upon your success instead. Every day you hit the gym your body strengthens but so does your character. You become a man that you, your friends, family and women respect and admire. For you pumping iron becomes the hard work, because eventually the motivational aspect of things seems to become natural. Your brain enters into this state where you’re no longer forced to exercise, instead this time, you love to exercise. Pretty soon you’ll start day dreaming of your next rep, and when the next time you walk back into the gym will be. It becomes a priority on your mind, and all of the smaller things that used to drag you down become simply forgotten. You’ll build up the anticipation and inspiration to work out, and when those two are combined you have the ultimate recipe for a momentum that will never stop persuading you to be a bodybuilder.

PROSTATE checked A RECENT STUDY DONE IN NIGERIA STATED THAT TWO PERCENT OF MEN DEVELOP PROSTATE CANCER AND 64% OF THEM ARE DEAD AFTER TWO YEARS

In the United States, African American men have a 40% greater chance of developing prostate cancer than other white Americans. Once I read this, I wondered if that meant Africans in general had a high rate of prostate cancer or if the African Americans health was determined by their lifestyles in the US. Studies have already proven that Asian men who live in Asia have the lowest risk; however when they migrate to the US, their risk increases. You might be prone to think that this is Ghana, not the US, therefore you are safe. Not true. Simply put, when there is more access to screening programs, there is a higher detection rate. If it is not detected early, your survival rates drops, leaving you with a poor outcome. For example, a recent study done in Nigeria stated that two percent of men develop prostate cancer and 64% of them are dead after two years. The prostate is a part of the male reproductive organ that helps make and store seminal fluid. In adult men, a typical prostate is about three

centimeters long and weighs about twenty grams .It is located in the pelvis, under the urinary bladder and in front of the rectum. The prostate surrounds part of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder during urination and semen during ejaculation. Because of its location, prostate diseases often affect urination, ejaculation, and rarely defecation. The prostate contains many small glands which make about twenty percent of the fluid constituting semen. In prostate cancer, the cells of these prostate glands mutate into cancer cells. The prostate glands require male hormones, known as androgens, to work properly. Prostate cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system. Most prostate cancers are slow growing; however, there are cases of aggressive prostate cancers. The cancer cells may metastasize (spread) from the prostate to other parts of the body, particularly the bones and lymph nodes. Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating, problems during sexual intercourse, or

erectile dysfunction. Other symptoms can potentially develop during later stages of the disease. Suspected prostate cancer is typically confirmed by taking a biopsy of the prostate and examining it under a microscope. Further tests, such as CT scans and bone scans, may be performed to determine whether prostate cancer has spread. ALARMING. Let’s get to the basics. What major factors increase the chances for developing prostate cancer? We have discussed race and the living environment. The other two are age and family history. The average age of diagnosis is 68, but medical doctors recommend that you start having yearly examinations at age 50. Family history is important because if a man has a brother or father with prostate cancer, his risk doubles. The risk increases more if the disease was diagnosed at an early age (55 or younger) or 3 affected three or more family members. Now that you now the 4 major

factors, what are the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer? Unfortunately, not everyone experiences symptoms of prostate cancer. Many times, signs of prostate cancer are first detected by a doctor during a routine check-up. Some men, however, will experience changes in urinary or sexual function that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer. These symptoms include: • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night • Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine • Weak or interrupted flow of urine • Painful or burning urination • Difficulty in having an erection • Painful ejaculation • Blood in urine or semen • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs If you experience any of the symptoms above, schedule an

examination and consult your doctor right away. Treatment options for prostate cancer with intent to cure are primarily surgery, radiation therapy, and proton therapy. Other treatments, such as hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, cryosurgery, and high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) also exist, depending on the clinical scenario and desired outcome. The age and underlying health of the man, the extent of metastasis, appearance under the microscope, and response of the cancer to initial treatment are important in determining the outcome of the disease. The decision whether or not to treat localized prostate cancer (a tumor that is contained within the prostate) with curative intent is a patient trade-off between the expected beneficial and harmful effects in terms of patient survival and quality of life.

DIAGNOSIS The only test that can fully confirm the diagnosis of prostate cancer is a biopsy, the removal of small pieces of the prostate for microscopic examination. However, prior to a biopsy, several other tools may be used to gather more information about the prostate and the urinary tract. Digital rectal examination may allow a doctor to detect prostate abnormalities. Cystoscopy shows the urinary tract from inside the bladder, using a thin, flexible camera tube inserted down the urethra. Transrectal ultrasonography creates a picture of the prostate using sound waves from a probe in the rectum.

things that men can do to reduce or delay their risk of developing prostate cancer. Below are 10 of the lifestyle changes noted by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Interestingly, these changes are in regards to diet. They believe (as do I) that the foods you eat can either strengthen or weaken your immune system. The following are their recommendations.

Eat fewer calories or exercise more so that you maintain a healthy weight. Try to keep the amount of fat you get from red meat and dairy products to a minimum. Watch your calcium intake.
