uman beings have been on this earth for thousands of years, and since our first appearance, we have changed. Our lifestyle has evolved. The lifestyle that the first humans had may seem undesirable compared to what we have now. They didn’t have the sophisticated technology, like iPhones or Netflix. They couldn’t go for joy rides, or enjoy air conditioning on a sweltering 105-degree day. The first humans didn’t have access to any of the technology that we have today, and it benefited them. This is because we have truly taken advantage of the essentials of life, and I don’t mean cars and home. I mean kindness and love. It is easier for us to focus on the bad instead of the good because we can talk, text, and tweet our frustrations out into the world where as the good goes unrealized. Today’s society is so corrupt. We are focused on receiving rather than giving, and as a result, society has become materialized. We care about who’s wearing what and how much we have. We work everyday to get money then we use that to buy trivial things, but we always want more. It is never enough. But if we give, it becomes more than enough.

Giving is something that is typically unheralded, but it comes with a sense of fulfillment that no new car or computer could bring. A great example is giving a present makes me feel twice as good as receiving a present does. I think the act of giving is something that you can’t explain it but you have to experience it physically. Giving is an act of kindness. A simple act of kindness that is so easily forgotten in our every-day lives.
One day, stopped at a light waiting to turn, I saw a man begging for money on the side of the road. He held a cardboard sign that was weathered and torn, asking for any amount of money in faded black sharpie. A lot of cars drove past him, not willing to make eye contact. I was five car lengths behind him when I saw a man ome out of his car, and give him a footlong sub along with a bottle of water. Acts like what this man did, for a complete stranger, have been forgotten in today’s society. We know that we should help people who are in need but we still chose to ignore them because we think, “they should get a job” or “I don’t have time to stop”. We do have the time.
My Dad has always told me that everyone has a story to tell and to be kind to everyone, no matter the circumstance. Each random person that passes by me on the daily basis is living a life that is as complex, if not more, than the life that I live. Filled with their own friends, their own daily routines, their ups and downs, their own personal goals and dreams, and their own craziness. But we see these people as just another person in front of you at Starbucks as we pass. These people have an invisible story,an invisible story that I may never know. Who knows, maybe that person walking next to me could end up being my best friend, or be my worst enemy. They could be someone that I would fall madly in love with. They could end up being my sister-in-law or my best friend’s cousin’s best friend. These people that pass by me on the streets I may only see once in my lifetime and I will never know their story.

Sometimes these strangers with their own stories can make their way into mine and leave a lasting impression, and then just leave. The best example of this one time where I was at a drive through and pulled up to pay for my meal, I only ordered a sandwich, neither nothing special nor terrible expensive. I took out my wallet to pay and the woman working said that it was already paid for. I was confused. I still had my ten-dollar bill in my hand. So I asked this woman to pay for the people’s meals that were behind me. I knew I would never see this woman and I knew I could never return this act of kindness to her. That’s what makes the world so great is doing acts of kindness and expecting nothing in return because you never know who will do the same to you. After all, kindness is meant to be shared.
