VICE CHANCELLOR

Message from the Vice Chancellor Students’ Union’s are at the heart of their university communities. They provide welcoming and safe environments for students who are often taking their first tentative steps towards lifetime independence, alongside opportunities for cultural enrichment and personal development. Perhaps more importantly, Northumbria Students’ Union offers a powerful and respected voice within the University community by representing the interests of their members and working constructively to enhance the quality of the student experience. 2015 has been an outstanding year in many ways for Northumbria, and the success that we have enjoyed is a testament to the exceptional work done by our students and our staff. This year Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School won the Business School of the Year award at the Times Higher Education Awards and in our NSS scores we are now ranked 28th in the UK for teaching; we have seen a real gain in employability, where we are now ranked 7th in the UK. 2015 has also seen excellent student recruitment, with significantly improved entry qualifications. As the Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016 commented, our students’ entry qualifications are now the highest of any post-1992 institution. In October, we welcomed our new Chancellor, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, with interests and ambitions that align closely with those of our University, Tanni is an ideal figurehead and ambassador. Her personal ambition, to encourage today’s young people to be the best they can, is an ambition which we can all share.

Northumbria is a research-rich, business-focussed, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. I know that a student’s first priority is to fulfil their academic potential, but in a competitive job market extra-curricular activities help students stand out from the crowd. The Students’ Union is a primary channel through which Northumbria students can enhance their employment prospects, through the numerous opportunities for personal development that it provides. Academic quality and an outstanding student experience are essential parts of our University. Students are firmly at the heart of this University and to meet their expectations we listen carefully to what they tell us. The Students’ Union is a key partner in this conversation and in the past year they have engaged and interacted with many thousands of our students. I congratulate the Students’ Union on a year of tremendous achievement. I look forward to working closely with you over the coming year.

Professor Andrew Wathey CBE FRHistS FSA FRSA

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Northumbria University

Hello Northumbria! What a year 2015 has been. As one of the UK’s most dynamic Students’ Unions, we’ve been working harder than ever before to continue to have a positive impact on your lives as students of Northumbria University, in fact it’s our mission. Every year we set ourselves objectives to make sure we’re doing everything we can to ensure your experience at Uni is a positive one. We do this by getting out and about across the Northumbria campuses and beyond to talk to students, find out what’s important to you and make sure we’re working to achieve results that really matter to you. This year we have made a huge difference to students’ lives with lots of positive changes and developments both in and out of the lecture theatre; from being shortlisted for the NUS Education Award for 2015 to saving students over £56,400 in admin fees for accommodation, bringing our total to 118,000 since our Lettings Agency, NU:LETS opened in 2012. Ultimately we’re here to represent students on all aspects of student life, whether that’s an academic career or socialising, maybe it’s making sure Northumbria Students are more employable after graduation; this year students have been Getting Involved with hundreds of activities, societies and volunteering opportunities, giving them invaluable experience and improving their CVs. We now provide over 7,215 extra-curricular activities a year! Being Social remained a priority with our key events seeing record levels of attendance and our Advice & Representation service has been Here to Help, with free, independent and confidential advice for over 370 new cases. We’ve seen an increase in student involvement across all NSU services, from the 3867 of you in societies to the 31,256 of you who like to keep up to date with what’s going on through our social media! All in all we’ve made great progress this year to make Northumbria a better place for you! I am extremely proud to be part of Northumbria Students’ Union and I hope you enjoy reading about we’ve made on your student experience throughout 2015.

MAKING A

BETTER

OUR 5 YEAR PLAN NSU IS LED BY THE VIEWS OF STUDENTS. WHEN WE CAME TO SET OUT PLANS FOR 2013 TO 2018, WE ASKED STUDENTS ACROSS CAMPUS TO CHOOSE, IN A REFERENDUM, WHAT OUR PRIORITIES SHOULD BE; THESE ARE THE BIG IDEAS WHICH CAME AS A RESULT. EACH REPRESENTING A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF STUDENT LIFE AT NORTHUMBRIA, EVERY BIG IDEA HAS A SET OF GOALS CHOSEN BY STUDENTS THAT NSU AIMS TO ACHIEVE BY 2018. WE’VE SUMMED UP THE BIG IDEAS BELOW:

UNION

HAVING A

POSITIVE IMPACT

THROUGHOUT 2015 WE MEASURED STUDENT SATISFACTION, ENGAGEMENT AND INVOLVEMENT AGAINST OUR BIG IDEAS AND KEY OBJECTIVES, ENSURING WE ARE DELIVERING FOR OUR MEMBERS AND MEASURING OUR SUCCESS. WE DID THIS BY SPEAKING TO STUDENTS USING SURVEYS, INCLUDING THE ’NATIONAL STUDENT SURVEY’, ‘YOUR UNION, YOUR SAY’ AND THE FRESHERS’ WEEK REVIEW INCLUDING FOCUS GROUPS, QUESTIONNAIRES AND ON-GOING FEEDBACK WITH OVER 9000 RESPONSES.
