A WORD FROM THE EDITOR TOM BROMWICH

As you settle into university life, whether for the first time or the last, I hope the year ahead is everything you want it to be. Summer is drawing to a close and autumn is sweeping in, with that it’s time for the first edition of NSU/Life to explore all the great things you’ve been writing about since term began.

This year’s Freshers’ was the biggest and best I’ve seen in my time here at Northumbria, it was great to see so many new faces enjoying all of the activities and nights throughout the whole two weeks! Over 7,000 of you came to see what societies and projects they wanted to join, what did you sign up to? Last year was filled with loads of great memories and as I look back, my appetite for the year ahead grows stronger. With plans in place and campaigns organised, as an officer team we couldn’t be more excited to get out and make some real changes with you.

GAN SCRAN AT

TOON ARMY

Go Eat at Grainger MARKET If you haven’t got yourself down to Grainger Market yet you are seriously missing out. Forget spending hundreds a month at the high street supermarkets on overpriced ingredients - why not support local business and pocket the savings? So you’ve moved to Newcastle, settled in and met your flatmates and coursemates. The next step is to embrace a bit of Newcastle life, right? Well up here, culture is football, and we’re here to give you a whistle-stop tour of the Toon’s very own Newcastle United and what to expect this coming year… Before I came to Newcastle I had friends and family telling me about ‘the Toon Army’; the city being painted black and white with football shirts, and about every pub and bar being crammed with Geordies eager to see ‘the Magpies’ grace the grass of St. James’ Park. I didn’t think much of it but sure enough they were right; game-day Newcastle is busy. In fact, Newcastle is generally a busy place for Newcastle United. I know it’s a bit of a truism but I’ve never known a city like it. Football up here really is like a religion. Both men and women, young and old, working Monday to Friday for their season tickets. Year’s made or broken by a win or a loss to their bitter Tyne and Wear rivals Sunderland. (Note: they’ve lost the last 5 games against them; the Toon has been a sombre place this year. And the last. And the one before.) You can’t get in a taxi without hearing

something about the home ground, the team, or being recited a brief history Newcastle United. But as a Leeds United fan, I usually get a rerun of the game when, on 22nd December 2001, Newcastle came from 3-1 down to beat us 4-3 in the last minute of the game. Nearly every taxi driver seems to have been at Elland Road that day… 14 years on it still hurts. Gone are the glory days of Solano and Shearer, Bellamy and Dyer, as Newcastle have endured season upon season of disappointment, leading to last season’s crescendo; a relegation struggle, fighting against Hull as they’d done so back in 2008-09. Fortunately the tables turned; they rallied to a 2-0 victory over West Ham to secure 15th place and their Premier League status. The season will be well underway by the time you’ve arrived, and if omens are anything to go by this season is set to be an interesting one for Newcastle. If you fancy gracing St. James’ Park with your presence the Students’ Union sells tickets for all the home games, with prices ranging from £15-40 depending on the game. The full home fixture list is below and tickets usually arrive at the Welcome Desk 2-3 weeks in advance. Hope to see you there!

SLICE Arguably Newcastle’s best pizza by the slice vendor. Authentic Italian pizza at its best cooked the old traditional way. I’d recommend giving the Tuscan sausage topping a go although margarita is spot-on. You can find Slice at the end of Aisle 4 of Grainger and sample it yourself for the student budget-friendly price of £1.70.

It’s been a part of my hangover tradition for as long as I can remember. There are lots of budget eateries in the city but when it comes to bang for buck you just can’t beat Joes. A sarnie will set you back a reasonable £2 – my recommendation is the chunky eggy bread breakfast!

WORDS // JOE HOLT

Grainger is the traditional Geordie hub for meeting your marras (friends), having a brew and picking up your shopping. Built in 1835 the market has been the epicentre of the city’s culinary scene for over a century, serving up street food from both Newcastle and further afield.

MMM...GLUG As a procurer of weird and wonderful ingredients and an even bigger ale fan I love this place. Craft beer if really kicking off in the North East and we have some really fantastic local breweries, Mmm... and its sister business Glug are on the front line in diversifying our (sorry) quite boring British palate. You can pick up oils, balsamics, chutneys, chillies and everything in between – Take the trip next door for a global selection of beers and ciders, everything from Japanese IPA’s to real English style craft cider.

WORDS // MATT AUDEN

So, you made it and now it’s time to forget those worries and jump in to what could be the best few years of your life. This isn’t a definitive guide to everything you should or shouldn’t do, just a few observations from us that have been there – and have definitely learnt from the experiences. WORDS // CLIVE STEVENS

Do something, or find a hobby Make the most of your time as a fresher, come next year you will be swamped with coursework – a hobby may just keep you sane. From football teams to drama and performing societies there really is something for everyone. Plus it’s a great way to meet new people for when your flat mates start to annoy you.

DON’T SLEEP WITH FLATMATES The temptation will be strong, you’re both in the same situation you will find comfort in that – but remember you will still have to live with this person. After the deed is done you will start to see a different side of them, and the rest of the year will be super awkward. Proceed with caution.

Keep a track of your money It’s completely ok to call home It’s probably the first time you are living away from home, it’s normal to get a little bit homesick. Make sure you keep in contact with home, no one will think any different of you for having a cheeky Facetime every once in a while.

The temptation of spending the entire lump sum of your student loan on Haribo and takeaways will be really hard to control, but remember – you need to live for the entire semester. There is loads of advice on the internet about ways to save money as a student, but lets face it – you will get the hang of your new student lifestyle in due course.

No doubt by now you will have heard of freshers’ flu and many will tell you that it is just a glorified hangover. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. University draws students from all across the world, which can make the first few weeks a breeding ground for illness. Don’t worry, you’re not likely to get anything serious but switching that bacon sarnie for a fruit salad may save you a nasty cough or cold. It’s really easy to avoid, just drink plenty of water and remember that Berocca is your new best friend.

It’s all right if you don’t know anyone
We all know the type – the positively inseparable people at your school who are going to university together. You want to laugh at their lack of adventure, but secretly you’re terrified that not knowing anyone at your university is going to leave you lonely. Thankfully, not true. There will be lots of other people there who don’t know anyone.

Don’t be that guy or gal

If it’s not reduced, put it back

The reputation you make in your first year will stay with you for the rest of your time here, make it a good one. Don’t steal the milk, use all the sauce or eat someone else’s left over pizza – just ask. It’s pretty likely that you’re going to move into a large house, you don’t want to be the one that’s not trusted there alone.

Say goodbye to those perfectly cooked meals at home and hello to pasta bake and stir fry. You are now the master of your destiny, and it’s time to learn about 9pm shopping trips – find out when your local supermarket reduce your favorite items and aim to shop then. You can thank us when you’re sat with brie and bacon sandwiches for less than £1.

flat-mates don’t have to be your only friends You will no doubt think you’ve found your soul mates after just a few days, but don’t feel like they have to be the only people you hang out with at uni. Go out, talk to someone new, I guarantee you will learn something and everyone needs friends!
Someone once told me that the people you meet at university are the ones you will stay friends with for the rest of your life.

Buy books second-hand Before you spend extortionate amounts of money on new textbooks, it’s definitely worth trying to find second-hand ones from previous students. Some textbooks will be completely useless after you’ve finished your first term of modules, so it’s a big waste to buy them new. The library will have all of the textbooks you need – you may not be able to take them home but you can always study there.

That’s why I personally find it so important to make your room feel as homely as possible and feel like somewhere you actually look forward to going to at the end of the day. Obviously, the best way to do this is to revamp your room, give it your own individual stamp and make it blossom with your own personal touches. Here are my top tips to make your room into the most warm, homely place possible

INGREDIENTS

1 Stock cube (vegetable or chicken, the choice is yours)

Let’s face it; moving to uni can be pretty terrifying. You find yourself staring at a blank canvas that is now your new “home from home” with nothing but bare walls, an empty wardrobe and a couple of shelves to keep you company. Having to adapt from having the comfort of home to your new smaller shoe-box room can be pretty tricky.

If you want a meaty flavour and have any leftover chicken in the fridge, break up a few pieces into your bowl. When you try it, why not tweet us a picture of your own twist to serving @NorthumbriaSU

TOP TIP The easiest and cleanest way to break your spaghetti is to put it in a resealable bag, squeeze out all the air and then bash it against the side of a table or break it by hand into small pieces. Saves on clean up and lets you break it up as small or big as you want.

FAIRY LIGHTS Without a doubt one of the most underestimated features and room essentials. You will be so surprised how lighting can change the entire atmosphere of your room and make it the most chilled out place possible. Also, they take up nowhere near as much of that invaluable desk room as a lamp would- all in all, a pleaser.

Pictures/posters everywhere Plaster your walls with good memories, friends and family and leave space for more memories to come. If you’re feeling homesick having pictures is great to reminisce in good times and to know you have people still there. Also who likes a plain wall? Any colour is good colour, so get decorating.

Room diffuser There is nothing worse than walking into someone’s room with the smell of musty laundry, alcohol or other questionable scents. Having a pleasant scent around makes you feel so comfortable and if your room

smells good- everyone will want to be in it.

DIY headboard Every normal non-hall-based bed usually includes a headboard of some form. So why not make your own and make your room look more homely? Cut out a piece of cardboard, find some gorgeous material and make your own student-budget-safe headboard. You’ll be surprised how authentic they actually look, and how they give your room that extra cosy feel.

Throws/blankets After a long hard day of lectures having a comfy bed and blankets to dive onto is an absolute must. Admittedly they make it a great deal harder to part with your beloved bed, but it’s so worth it in the long term. How you make your own space is completely up to you, but coming back to a place that feels like home and a place you feel comfortable is so important. Get decorating and get comfy. Happy new hall decorating!

lifestyle

Are you a new kid in Toon? DON’T PANIC. Thomas Johnston runs through some of Newcastle’s hotspots and hidden gems to help you make the most out of your time in the greatest city in the UK.

Entertainment Newcastle’s notorious for it’s thriving nightlife scene but if you fancy peeling away from the crowds of the Diamond Strip, the city still has plenty on offer.

If you’re a bit of a movie buff, cinemas in Newcastle offer great discounts for students. On a Tuesday, you can see the latest blockbuster at Empire Cinema The Gate or at Vue Cinemas at Trinity Square for next to nothing, which means you can afford to gorge yourself on popcorn and sweets.

Fancy something a bit more dramatic? Look no further than the Theatre Royal. This legendary venue plays host to everything from musicals to Shakespeare, ballet to interactive theatre. If you’re clever about it, you can nab yourself a seat with a cracking view for less than the price of a night out.

Chris Ramsey, Ross Noble, Sarah Millican. What do they have in common? They’re all funny people from the North East. If you just fancy a good giggle,The Stand is well worth a look. The great and the good of comedy have cut their teeth here and to this day, it’s a fantastic breeding ground for fresh, up and coming talent. Tickets are far from expensive and their chili con carne alone is well worth the trip.

Of course living in Newcastle, you HAVE to make the pilgrimage up to St James’ Park. Whether you’re a football fan or not, the sheer electricity that erupts around the ground when the ball hits the back of the net is like nothing else. You can even get discounted tickets through NSU - just ask about them at the Welcome Desk.

Eats

Here on campus, Habita offer wholesome, tasty meals at even tastier prices. Whether it’s a quick nibble just to keep you going between lectures or a hearty pizza on an evening with your friends, there’s something for everyone at a price that will keep the overdraft at bay. Plus, the bar offers some of the most student-friendly drinks offers in the city.

Fat Hippo Underground, just a stones throw from the Theatre Royal, is easy enough to walk past. If you’re eagle eyed enough to spot the red hippo neon sign and you’ll be rewarded with a quirky, rugged, underground hidden treasure that specialises in mouth watering burgers at a reasonable price. Just across the road over on High Bridge, regardless of how much spice you can handle, Dabbawal’s irresistible range of Indian street foods are not to be missed and won’t break the bank. For those with a sweet tooth, head to La Petit Creperie in the Grainger Market for delicious crepes made to order in authentic, traditional French style.

Escape Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the city can get a bit much. Luckily, Newcastle has plenty of green spaces where you can take a load off. The picturesque setting of Jesmond Dene is just a short metro ride from the city centre. It’s the ideal place for a quiet walk or a relaxing picnic. Every June, the Town Moor plays host to The Hoppings, the city’s legendary funfair but throughout the rest of the year, it’s a nice tranquil spot to gather your thoughts, as is Leazes Park which can be found in the shadow of the football Stadium. If the weather’s good, you can head further afield to one of the North East’s award winning beaches. Tynemouth Longsands and Whitley Bay are among the best beaches in the country and have the fish and chips to match. Again, thanks to the Metro, it’s easily accessible from the city. Staying in the city, the bars and restaurants along the front of the Quayside offer a laid back escape from the madness of the city itself. Head down on a Sunday to catch the Quayside market for delicious food and quirky gifts and novelties.

ACCESS ALL AREAS. Northumbria Fresher’s Week may have had the night times covered, but it also proved you don’t have to have a drink in your hand to have a good time… Unless the drink is a cup of tea, that is! Kicking off the day time activities was the Big Welcome Tea Party. With free tea and cake for everyone, Freshers were transported into a party Alice in Wonderland herself would be proud of. If hot drinks and cake aren’t your cup of tea (ahem), the Fast Friends team were waiting to whisk you away to the beautiful surroundings of Jesmond Dene. The beautiful park is not only a haven, just a short walk from the bustling city centre, but a great place

to meet new friends, as plenty of Freshers found out! The scheme also ran other events throughout the week such as a cool ice-skating trip and an essential trip to IKEA for the students in need of furniture and meatballs respectively. For the Freshers who stuffed their cars so full they had to leave their beloved Xboxs and PS3s behind, the Big Gamer Party had enough consoles to satisfy everyone’s withdrawal symptoms. The event had Wii Bowling contests, Pokemon tournaments and even speed Rubix Cube solving. Some events, like the Hangover Lounge and Tea Time Films (including classics new and old like The Breakfast Club and The Lego Movie) ran throughout the week, meaning students had plenty of down time to recover from the previous nights’ antics. They could also wind down listening to acoustic tunes and exclusive interviews with The Coffee House Sessions in Habita. Thursday gave students a unique

view of the city on the River Cruise Boat Party. Setting sail down the Tyne and seeing Newcastle’s bridges and Quayside from a completely different perspective was the highlight off the week for many students, new and old. The free glass of bubbly when they touched ground didn’t hurt either! The daytime events weren’t just about Freshers Week, the Freshers and Societies and Volunteering Fairs set students up with doctors, restaurant vouchers and friends for life if they decided to join a society! The week was brought to a close with a Giant Scaletrix Tournament, proving it’s okay to still be a big kid… as long as you have big toys to go with it! All of this isn’t even including the Quad Games, Frozen Singalong, football matches and quizzes, so if you’re worn out reading this, think about the people who went along to everything!

WORDS // ELLIE LINFORD

ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR! (S) Fresher Fair’s epitomise the student experience. Being fun, informative, and messy; what do you expect from free pizza?

Kicking off the week; Coach Lane stood out as having of one of its largest volunteer fairs to-date. Armed with free popcorn, and candy floss students were greeted by societies like the mental awareness, nursing, and the mental health nursing.

This year’s fresher’s week events at Northumbria have been BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER! From the Headphone Disco to the hilarious comedy night, and the Big Fresher’s Quiz to the return of hypnotist Lo Reid, our media team were out in force to capture the highlights of the biggest week to date.

It’s not hard to see why societies are becoming more popular. Employers are likely to recruit people committed to a particular vocation, and with the opportunity to giving as much time as one can afford with their studies there’s no reason not to. Fresher’s Fair has been an

incredibly popular kick starter for City Campus’s first week. We at the SU are 98% confident that it is usually due to the freebies that entice a captive audience of hungry students.

Trust us… We did the math Free + Pizza + T-shirts = Mass Queues There is no longer queue than that for the Domino’s Pizza stand; having sussed out the exact formula of grabbing the attention of students. However it shouldn’t be forgotten amongst Newcastle’s Clubs and eateries that the fairs also host recruitment stalls for the forces. Students looking into joining the forces after they graduate

Megan DoheRTy

can ask questions regarding the Regiments. Taking over Domain, Reds bar, and Escape it quite apparent that more societies get involved with the City Campus Societies and Volunteering Fair. Catering for a broad spectrum of students the day usually compromises of cake, ale, and foods from all cultures. The crowd of curiosity has a chance to see a range of activities from Dance to Roc Soc, but it seems societies all work to not being out done especially if Slackline is anything to go by. The Societies and Volunteer Fair is only possible with the support of Northumbria’s own students. By building, baking, and creating amazing stalls they welcome the new students to Northumbria.

UNDER THE SPELL OF

LO REID

The

& the

Northumbria legend Lo Reid made her quirky antics known to a whole new set of freshers as she graced the university once more this September. With her controversial but crowd pleasing humour, she made it quite clear from the start that her show was not for the faint of heart – or the politically correct– by telling her audience ‘where [they could] go.’

Q&A. TOM // You’ve become somewhat of a legend of Northumbria Freshers’ having been coming here for over 15 years LO // Yeah, I started when I was about 3 – coming an awful long time, but you are my favorite venue so I’m going to keep coming back! TOM // Do you have any stand out moments from the last 15 years? LO // There are absolutely millions – doing 3 shows in Freshers’ and then a request show later in the year, with those you can never predict what’s going to happen. Adam, your Union President, I remember him crying because I got rid of Dr. Who. I always remember this show because

The self-proclaimed hedonist did not disappoint this year, pushing boundaries to the maximum, covering a wide range of scenarios with her hypnotised volunteers from a Jeremy Kyle simulation to oral sex 101. Around twenty volunteers subjected themselves to public ridicule with the process taking roughly ten minutes to set in before the chaos and hilarity could ensue. We managed to catch up with Reid to get a deeper insight into the mind of the woman with all the control. everyone is wearing PJ’s. Always. One year I’m going to request that they dress in something else to my request, perhaps bondage gear. TOM // That would definitely be an interesting change to bondage gear! To someone that hasn’t seen your show, how would you describe it to them? LO // It’s quite difficult to describe, what I hope is that I make people laugh for over 2 hours. I don’t class myself as racist, or offensive in any shape or form – I am quite blunt speaking as most of you know, but I would be horrified if I upset anybody. Which is why I take purely volunteers out of an audience, I wont pick on

anyone to come up on stage. I want everyone to really enjoy the show, so to be either out there and absolutely laughing your head off, or up on stage and loving it – because even hypnotized you see the show. TOM // Do you feel you get a different response from students than an older audience? LO // I do shows from Marine shows to theatre show to presidents in East Africa and I also do work in Dubai. You get different reactions everywhere, students are my favorite. You all have great sense of humours, vision and imagination. The show is different every time, I’ve been doing it for 25 years on stage now and I still laugh every time. TOM // Do you think TV hypnosis shows are indicating that hypnotism is becoming a more mainstream form of entertainment? LO // It’s always been mainstream, but I’ve never actually seen that show. The hypnotism act of 1952 was set up when they first began to televise shows, the first show couldn’t go ahead because the camera men were accidently hypnotized – and that’s now why they don’t show the induction on TV. I don’t know why people do think of it as alternative – I might be, but not the entertainment.

For new students in particular, Freshers’ Week is all about meeting new people and taking part in activities that you perhaps haven’t before. That means that the UV paint party that NSU hosted on the 17th of September was an absolute must! And if you didn’t go? You missed out on what would probably have been the messiest, most colourful night of your life! The ingredients for the ultimate UV paint party are as follows; UV lighting (obviously), skin-friendly neon paint in as many colours as you can find, and a lot of good music. NSU, though, took it one incredible step further by recruiting the Glo-Bots. These were crazy, dancing ‘robots’ covered in multicoloured lights that flashed in sync with the DJ’s fantastic tunes of choice - there’s just no other way to describe them - and of course the massive pyro display. The room was jam-packed with students in white t-shirts all glowing under the eerie blue light, with neon-smeared faces everywhere

& you turned in a blur of colour. Closer to the stage, sheets were strung up from the ceiling. At first, the function of these sheets was a mystery - the assumption was that they were merely for decoration, like the bright stars and spheres hanging down above the crowd. But then, with the arrival of the Glo-Bots, their purpose became clear: they were for sheltering behind as the Glo-Bots covered everybody in yet more neon paint. Although being soaked in weirdly warm, yellowish paint was uncomfortable - which could be considered a bit of an understatement - at the same time it was honestly one of the funniest parts of the night. Entry to the event for those without wristbands was £5, but hugging your flatmates and completely covering them in the yellow slime? Absolutely priceless.

NSU promised an ‘out of this world’ performance, and they certainly delivered. If another UV Paint Party is scheduled, you have got to be there. LAUREN WILSON

Featu red FRESHTIVAL FEVER! Clad in full hippy attire, Northumbria’s newest intake of freshers were transported back to the festival fields of the summer with their very own allday Freshtival here on the campus. Donning psychedelic headbands, peace medallions and flared jeans and painting their faces in fluorescent patterns, students were feeling the peace and love as they brought another unforgettable freshers week to a close. And the campus had a real carnival atmosphere. The Quad was brought to life alive with the sound of great music from a whole host of artists as well as the mouthwatering aromas emanating from the delicious street food stalls. It was clear that these students were determined to see the week go out with a bang.

To kick things off, students were treated to some guitar wizardry courtesy of The Showhawk Duo, who put an acoustic twist on EDM anthems as well as an expert reimagining of Bohemian Rhapsody. Then, noughties indie legends The Pigeon Detectives took to the stage. Their dynamic and exciting brand of indie rock provided a fantastic throwback for many a fan, who were treated to hits like I Found Out, Take Her Back and Everybody Wants Me in all of their raw, nostalgic glory. Next came pop rock heroes The Hoosiers, who more than kept the crowd on their toes. Their set was peppered with old favourites like Worried About Ray, Cops and Robbers and of course Goodbye Mr A, as well as brand spanking new

material fresh from their forthcoming new album The Secret Service. While the feel may have changed as Shift K3y took to the decks, the energy was never going to drop. The 22 year old London based DJ was here to play some of the freshest dance and house tunes in the land as well as some old favourites, including his very own top 10 single Touch. Then came the afterparty, as Club MTV took over to keep the party going. Their enormous beats put the crowds into one final frenzy before the bar closed and the lights came back on. After a full on week, crammed full of introductory lectures, freshers fairs and of course, partying, Freshtival was the perfect sendoff for yet another incredible freshers week at Northumbria University.

SURVIVAL GUIDE FOOD Eat4Less The famous ‘Eat4Less’ located on Northumberland Street near Argos. This place has the best meal deals in Newcastle, £1.79 for a tasty baguette and chips. You can’t go wrong!

Fat Hippo Here’s something for students looking for a hangover cure, a burger and fries for only £5! You can find this restaurant near monument and I would completely recommend this place to eat.

Slug and Lettuce This suggestion is to beat the Monday gloom by going out with your friends and celebrating the start of the week. At the Slug and Lettuce you get 50% on this day and as a bonus, it’s located on the scenic quayside.

Wetherspoons Everyone knows this branded restaurant for being cheap with its food and its drink deals. It’s the perfect place for students to chill in between lectures and what makes it better, this one is located a walk away from the Union.

Frankie and Bennys This famous restaurant chain is wellknown for its Italian inspired cuisine. I decided to include this particular place because of its generous 20% off for students with a NUS card and its location as its right next to Primark in the city centre.

So I was thinking of things to write about and it came to me… what about using my experience as a second year student. This article is basically suggestions from me about where to dine around Newcastle to dancing your night away, all on a student budget, there really is something for everyone!

ACTIVITIES

NIGHTLIFE

Lane 7

Monday

For students wanting to do something other than get wasted, try Lane 7 - a bowling alley with a pretty cool concept. You can even play ping-pong, pool and Karaoke and the food isn’t bad earlier. Just show your student card between Sunday and Wednesday for a £4.50 bowl per person.

Why not start the week off with Happy Mondays in Habita and if you’re wanting to go out in town try Digi Mondays (At Digital) its 80p entry and one pound drinks till 12am.

Tuesday

Vue Cinema (Gateshead) For those film geeks or those who want to watch the latest blockbuster, this cinema does an amazing student discount.. 3.99 to see any film showcased. Located right next to trinity square and Gateshead metro it’s the perfect place to get to.

Life Centre At the moment the science centre has currently got on a gaming exhibition (Game 2.0) and has the world’s biggest collection of playable computer games. From Mario to Minecraft this place has everything for those who already love games or anyone wanting to get into them. Student Cards are accepted too… bonus!

Eldon Square Located right in the city centre, intu Eldon Square shopping centre is the closest place to go for the high street brands such as Topshop, Hollister, Apple and many more. Its recently opened its shops much later so there’s much more time to ‘shop until you drop’.

Grainger Market For people looking for more local and independent traders as well as a more vintage theme I would visit the Grainger Market. It’s nestled between Grainger Street and Clayton Street and there is over 100 businesses to browse.

Trinity High Street Quayside Market Every Sunday the Quayside transforms into a busy market which features independent traders selling their goods. If you’re looking for something to do on a lazy Sunday then just come along and see what goods people have got to offer and even visit the Baltic after.

St James Football This parts for all those football fans out there who are missing there hometown matches or already love Newcastle United. Why not go watch the next match for cheaper as students get a massive 25% off the full price tickets, go support your team!

This suggestion is more for those living in the Gateshead area or staying in Trinity Square. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and a giant Tesco for those who need to grab some shopping in addition to a NHS health centre for those to need to sign up to the doctors.

On Tuesdays there is a push the button in Habita so you may be lucky and win half price drinks or even get a round in for free! Apart from that there is Wakiki at House of Smith, 5 pound entry and you’re guaranteed a good night.

Wednesday Mid-week there is some student sessions with a happy hour where drinks are cheaper and everyone takes advantage, why aren’t you? If that doesn’t float your boat, try dirtz at Perdu.

Thursday On Thursday night, there is Coffee House Sessions at Habita where you can listen to people playing freshly brewed live music and if you’re in the mood afterwards there is karaoke afterwards for those who were inspired to sing their hearts out!

Friday Start the weekend off experiencing a different type of music - soul and funk. If that isn’t your type of music why not try the DirtyPOP at 02 academy which has every type of music and £1 entry before 11.30.

Metro Centre

Saturday

The Metro Centre in Gateshead is an enclosed shoppers delight with any shop and restaurant you can imagine right under its roof. If you’re thinking of going, get the X66 bus at Gateshead transport interchange or the 100 shuttle bus from Monument and Central Station. Happy Shopping!

Spend your Saturday night attending an alternative night at Habita or if you don’t fancy that there is an alpha rock night at the 02 academy.

Sunderland If you’re getting sick of Newcastle and want some different scenery, why not try Sunderland – it’s only a quick metro ride away. The Bridges shopping centre contains over 100 stores to browse and find your own personal taste.

SHOPPING

Sunday End the weekend on a high note by being social with your friends with the quiz at habita, if you’re competitive or just doing it for fun the quiz is for everyone.

Being a fresher in any big, new campus can be pretty daunting. Think gazelle in a lion’s den – who knows when you’re going to get eaten alive, you’ve just come to terms with the fact it’s probably going to happen. Well, what if I told you our metaphorical lion was nothing more than a soft cuddly toy – yeah, just like that one you figured you should probably have left at home – and everyone on campus was once in the gazelle’s shoes, and that’s if they aren’t still. So this is where it gets fun – you’ve got a support network of gazelles just waiting to carry you through your university years, and the sooner you realise that the sooner you can throw yourself at every opportunity that comes your way…

IN THE WORDS OF SNOW PATROL... JUST SAY YES. Everything that comes your way in the first couple of weeks is an opportunity. So make like the gazelle you are and leap at it… Going to a lecture with a new group of friends; trying out for a sports team; going to someone else’s’ lecture; joining a society you’d never considered before; going from a night out straight to your 9am; cooking a meal for your entire flat; taking your mates to see a Newcastle Eagles basketball match – Just Say Yes! Why? You’ll make loads of new friends and have some amazing memories to go along with it. First year is to be enjoyed and

A Lesson on throwing yourself in at the LAURA CHARLTON

experienced, so make sure you can look back on it with a smile. Just be sure you make friends with your bed and some library resources at the same time – smiling at first year (or your parents) whilst you fail is a whole other kettle of fish…

BE THAT GAZELLE. It’s probably fair to assume your fellow gazelles are just as confused as you are about what there is to do and how to make friends – so be ~that guy~ (or girl) and get everyone involved. There’s no better time to get knocking on everyone’s doors in halls & inviting people round to your flat for some banter or a few beers. Head down to NSU, grab a cheap pizza and grab an Essential Student Guide to check out all there is to do in Newcastle. With a huge variety of things to do from bars, clubs & entertainment venues to beaches and parks you literally can’t be stuck for something to do – and you’ll get a whole lot of kudos for being the gazelle to get the plan sorted!

WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, FIND MEG (MORE EXPERIENCED GAZELLES) MEG (or More Experienced Gazelles) are in-the-know, with a year or two of wisdom to gift their younger peers with. So where, I hear you ask, do you find one willing to take your slightly confused but wonderful self under his or her wing? Well, good gazelle, the Student’s Union. More specifically?

A society, volunteering project or volunteering week. The wise beasts who make up these wonderful student groups will not only have a common interest with yourself, and form a support network of their very own, but will also welcome you into that with open arms and a myriad of wisdom about all things campus.

Matt richardson

AND IF THAT FAILS? FIND AN EMEG. Even More Experienced Gazelles are invaluable to you in times of need. When everything hits the fan, and maybe first year isn’t turning out exactly as you’d hoped, get yourself along to the Student’s Union to seek out some advice and support. The EMEG’s are there waiting to guide you through any trickiness that might occur, whether it is financial, emotional, academic – or anything else! We hope you never need an EMEG, but just in case you do – be aware of the support that’s waiting for you. So tackle your Freshers Week & year head on, with a positive attitude and a desire to try anything once (Terms & Conditions apply… You know what I mean) and you’ll soon find you have a whole load of PC experiences and friends you’ll never forget! As well as some happy MEGs to guide you on your way…

Go forth, young gazelle, and

conquer!

FUNNY MAN

Funny man Matt Richardson graced the Domain stage with his unique style of stand-up comedy. He was supported by his very funny friends Tony Jameson and Nick Cranston. It was tow hours of pure unadulterated hilarity which saw the unlucky members of the front row being the inspiration for many a one liner. We sent our reporter Thomas Johnston along to have a quick chat with Matt; unfortunately we can’t print all of it (unless we want to get sued!) but keep on reading to find out what he has to say.

Q&A. Tom // How are you enjoying being in Newcastle? Matt // I got here about 2 and half hours ago; I literally just got off the train. So, my thing with Newcastle is, it’s a massive city there is lots of comedy clubs here, and lots of gigs but I’ve never really been. I did a gig in Durham and stayed with a friend here in Newcastle, but we had to leave at 7am the next day and even now I got here at around 7 and I have to leave at 7am again. It’s nice, but I’ve properly visited. Most cities in the UK I’ve spent a little while in, live Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham – most of the big cities. With Newcastle I really dip in and out, I guess this is only the second or third time I’ve been here with work. It’s annoying – I want to spend some more time here and actually go out Tom // You’re more than welcome back anytime, I’m sure! Matt // Cheers! Maybe, we’ll see, lets see how my set goes first? Tom // How is your new material going?

Matt // Yeah, pretty good – I was on tour last year for 8 months, and then did a load of TV bits for a while, but now I’m back doing stand up again. There are a couple of new bits tonight, I’m currently writing for my next tour early next year. Tom // You mentioned some of your TV work, some of our students will recognize you from your work with Big Brother – If you could pick three people that you would most like to see together in the house, who would they be? Matt // Ah, is money no object? It’s so expensive to get people in - people you think are a terrible booking actually cost a fortune to get in that house. The ones you might think were like £10,000 are actually £250,000 just to get them in. In terms of my house; I’d put in a mega star, someone like Justin Beiber – he’s an idiot, but we’ve never seen him for 3 weeks on the go, it’s always just one night. I’d put in myself and I’d pay myself £4 million if money is no object. I don’t know who else really –I got asked once but I don’t think I could do it. It would have to be a

horrible person; the nice people are terrible housemates, they’re really nice and don’t want to fall out with people and just sit around chatting. The worst human beings make the best housemates. Hitler would be an amazing housemate because he is an arsehole. That’s a bit of an understatement. But yeah, an awful person and then just see what they would do. Tom // If you could pick one person that you would least like to be in the house with, who would it be? Matt // From previous series, probably Perez Hilton, he was on the last celebrity one. Or this year there’s a woman called Farrah Abraham who was on ’16 and Pregnant’ and then had a leaked sex tape – even though it was in HD and filmed by a cameraman and that she leaked it herself. I’m not the most polite person, im quite blunt – the problem is, they will be idiots and I’ll tell them they need to stop doing that and that would look really bad on TV. Anyone that would make me look bad I wouldn’t go in with. By myself for 3 weeks I’d be absolutely fine.

SOCIETY SPOTLIGHT NSU/Societies come in all shapes and forms and we love them for it. Having a range of different things to go to makes life fun. Yes you can like to dance, but also like to go to book club as part of English Society and then be surrounded by people of the same faith and belief in your spare time. Getting to pick and mix all the wonderful and different things is awesome, but knowing where to start can be hard. There are about 100 different groups and it’s pretty hard to commit to them all, so here are a few Society Spotlights – giving you an insider into what it’s like to be part of something special. Uni can be tough, but societies are like families, you’ll laugh, cry and have a lot of fun with each other. Swing by NSU and sign up.

We are Northumbria Dance Society! We offer weekly dance classes for all abilities in ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, commercial and flexibility. These can be just for fun; in our free show classes or you can also join our competition teams, which travel the country competing against other universities! All dances are showcased in our annual Easter show for all your friends and family to come and enjoy! Not only do we dance but we pride ourselves on our amazing drinking and non-drinking socials every week, alongside our passion for fundraising for our newly adopted charities; Cancer Research UK and The Henry Spink Foundation. New for 2014/15 the full society were given the opportunity to embark upon our first Sports Tour, which we fully intend to bring back for 2015/16 after it being such an amazing experience for everyone who got involved!

THE ROCK SOCIETY well as planning trips away for all members and introduction of technique in lessons, to continue to develop the ability of all members throughout their time at Northumbria. Our society is ideal for anyone who has danced their whole life and doesn’t want to give it up when they move away to university, or it is the perfect chance for beginners to come and give any style of dance a go, even if they have never seen a ballet shoe!

The Rock Society or RocSoc as it’s known is probably the best music based society in Newcastle. As a society we are all about having a good time and making friends through the mutual bond of rock and alternative music. We also like to party, we really like to party and with links to some of Newcastle’s finest alternative establishments we bring the party all year round. We even run our club night called Phoenix, once a month. The rock society is all about having fun, from our weekly nights out to our fortnightly social events we encourage our members to have fun. I joined the society at a particularly low point in my life but within a few weeks of hanging out with the rock society I was having the time of my life. Joining the rock society was the best decision I’ve made at university and I feel that I have truly made some friends for life.

IEEE

Northumbria Dance Society have walked away with 33 trophies across three competitions over the past three years as well as being awarded Best President, Best Treasurer, Best Performance Society, Highly commended committee of the Year and most recently, Highly commended Society of the Year 2014/15. We are now working towards increasing fundraising for our charities as

Last academic year a group of proactive PhD students in engineering set the first Northumbria IEEE Student Branch. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, IEEE, is a prestigious professional organisation that is the world’s largest association of technical professionals, with more than 400,000 members.

We are the Northumbria Feminist Society! We organise many events during the year to raise awareness of gender inequality and promote ways of correcting it. These events include discussions on topics such as consent, trans-inclusivity, women in sport and many more. We also have regular socials that cater to drinkers and non drinkers alike! We are part of a bigger network of feminist activism in Newcastle and will be doing joint events with the Newcastle University Feminist society. We strongly believe that feminist students should be supported and the Northumbria Feminist society is a great place to meet other like minded feminists and make new friends. The reason our society is so important is because sexism is still a huge issue across the globe and in our university. It is important to take a stand

against it and support students who experience it. We welcome all new members and would love to hear your ideas as to what we can do as a society together!’ You can find out about who we are on the Students’ Union website and get in touch over Facebook.

IEEE is then a key stakeholder in engineering research, editing top journals and hosting a large variety of academic research conferences. Northumbria IEEE SB is then part of a global family with a clear scope in making an impact to the student community at local level. This society intends to use IEEE as a platform to complement the engineering student experience, performing networking with other IEEE student branches and research organisations in the North East and the UK. This year we have an exciting event calendar that includes technical and research support talks from

IEEE. As well we are inviting research speakers from corporate players with presence in the North East. In this way postgraduate research students can interact with prospective employers, finding out more about the sort of roles that are available in the region. The branch is also getting involved in University events, such as the PGR Research Showcase last June, as well as Faculty industrial open days. This young branch has a plan to expand its activity to undergraduate engineering students to help students to reach their full potential. With this aim in mind we had presence in the in the Fresher’s Week Fair. In this way we are planning to host talks targeted specially to undergraduate audience. Future plans include the organisation of academic events such as quality workshops or research conferences.

We are NSU’s Pole Fitness Society, and we aim to provide students with the opportunity to have fun whilst getting fit in a new and uniquely challenging way. Pole fitness is all about progression and gaining the confidence to push your body to new limits and we promise you will be amazed by what you can achieve! ‘Nothing compares to that feeling when you finally nail the move you’ve been dreaming of’ (Charlotte Johnston, Pole Society President). With classes being held at the leading Pole and Aerial studio Northern Pole Dance, students are given top quality teaching and supervision enabling them to do things they never imagined possible. Our weekly classes are specially tailored to our students, for beginners classes cover a range of spins, climbs and sits which build up the strength to have you upside down by Christmas! We have instructors who are qualified to help you progress no matter your level, and many of our existing students have been taken from beginner right through to advanced since starting their journey with the society! This year we are adding even more excitement into our classes in the form of focus classes: there will be one two hour focus class added onto the time table each month- So on top of weekly pole classes, our students now get the opportunity to expand themselves into other areas such as: flex class, aerial yoga, routine

work, body conditioning etc. All of which will be chosen in a monthly vote by you! No matter your ability, gender, size, shape or fitness, we are proud to say that there is something for everyone at Northumbria Pole Society, and on top of learning a new sport, we can honestly say that the society has become a community, we have made some amazing friends for life. All of us are so passionate about this underestimated sport and we are confident that anyone who tries it will feel the same. After all, ‘there is never failure with pole fitness, only progression’

JAC-Dan My faith and student life For most of my life I didn’t believe in God, I pretty much felt like it was me against the whole world and most of my relationships were pretty meaningless, but life was anything but pretty. I found myself thinking about God, but mostly I was just angry with him, if he even existed. After struggling for a while with the idea of going to church, I went along one Sunday and remember saying to God, ‘well, here I am, take me as you find me, because I cannot change who I am’. I had no expectation that that’s what he would do. I’ve realised now that that’s probably what he does best: takes us just as we are; loves us just as we are. Last year I started a part time degree in leadership and management and my mate Jack asked me to help him make the food for Student Life. I went and helped him, then ended up staying for the evening; it’s called The Hub, and it’s a weekly meeting of the Student Life society, where we eat, talk, listen, and share on some soul searching topics of conversation, then we play random board games, card games, spy games, settlers games, you name it, it’s probably been played at the hub. I kept going as much as I could and it helped me a lot to feel settled, like I belonged here at the university. I met tonnes of people and made some really good friends, from all kinds of nations, backgrounds, of all faiths and none, and what I love most is that there’s no judgement at all, we take people just as they are.

The Northumbria Students’ Union Japanese Animation and Culture Society, otherwise known as JAC-Dan. This is a society where we look into all aspects of Japanese culture. We hope to broaden peoples horizons on one of the very fast growing interest in all the modern pop-culture that leaves Japan and enjoy it’s history We meet on a weekly basis and enjoy a wide range of activities. We watch Anime series and movies, every now and then we do cultural based events for example a session learning about Kabuki and Face painting, or a session making Origami. At the end of semester 1 we have a Christmas meal at one of the local Tepanyaki Restaurants, this is a great way to finish off the first semester. In JAC-Dan we are a diverse and interesting collection of people who share similar interests. These range from a diverse range of subcultures and fandoms, including (but not limited too) furries, film lovers and cosplaying, the cosplayers

can have a go at our popular Cosplay Clubnight events where there is a prize for the top 3 costumes. We are a society that is apart of an event known as Si-Con, where 4 great societies come together and celebrate in our love for all things geeky. These other Societies are Rock society, CVGS (Computer Videogames Society) and GRP (Games and Role-playing society). (picture taken by Sam Lake)

The importance of experience alongside a degree is world known.

LOVE CHARITY, LOVE NSU RAG! Do you have a charity that is close to our heart? Perhaps one that has supported you, a friend or family member through an important time in your life, or inspired and shaped your life in some way.

a Course rep gives you a chance of networking as well as representing your faculty next year. NSU welcomes new volunteers and some leadership positions are even open to freshers!

Well we love charity at NSU and we provide a wealth of opportunities for students to support the causes they are passionate about through our RAG programme.

It doesn’t have to be all unpaid. Different uni departments need student helpers for regular events or specialist skills such as international

RAG stands for Raise & Give and is led by Laura Charlton, your VP Activities, and the RAG Committee who are a team of students who organise a huge range of fundraising events over the course of the year.

The key to the dream internship hether you are a new or continuing student, Autumn is the busiest season in every Northumbrian’s school year. There’s already enough to do with accommodation, class timetables and societies. Not to mention Freshers’ Week, which makes the best memories to be remembered during tough times (undoubtedly the assessment period!) With all these things to manage, it’s quite natural to forget why you are actually at university; ultimately to get a job.

The importance of experience alongside a degree is world known. International students feel a stronger need for a UK experience. You need to have finished your 1st year for most internships but that doesn’t erase the possibility of early experience! You can start with the most basic volunteering, whether it is within the Students’ Union or at an external organisation. Later, as you build some confidence, stepping up your game is a great move. I did some fundraising and community volunteering with NSU in my 1st year, only to take leadership roles by May. For volunteering in your field, being

exposure. Working with the marketing department on a country special video opened up more opportunities for me. Simply dropping an email to a department about potential vacancies might earn you a mini internship! Finally, you have a lot on your plate coming to uni, but devoting a little time and effort to increase your employability will not only be a better use of your time but will make your CV look drop dead gorgeous when you apply for internships/placements by the year end!

Here at NSU at Coach Lane Campus we’re working really hard to make loads of improvements to make your time at Northumbria even better. Our dedicated officer and staff team are always around to listen to your feedback which helps shape the things that we do, from campaigns to changes to your union. This summer we held some great events for all ages, from a summer festival with a BBQ and face painting to our largest Fresher’s Fair ever! Welcoming new students with loads of fun activities throughout the first few weeks of term, as well as saying a warm welcome back to our returning students. Societies are doing some great work, with more course-based groups setting up all the time! Make sure you sign up to one of 100+ societies; many are holding weekly socials here at Coach Lane, meaning there are loads of fun activities for you to get involved with in between your studies!

A big part of our work this year for Coach Lane is to work on the bus service, and to make sure that it’s working for you! If you have feedback look out for your officer team around every week or ask for a Big Ideas card at the welcome desk. We always want to hear what you have to say and together we can make sure things are the best they can be!

Coach Lane Campus is home to a varied range of professional courses: Social Work, Nursing (Adult, Learning, Children & Mental Health), Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Primary Education, Physiotherapy, ODP (Operating Department Practitioners), Community Joint Honours plus a whole heap of Post Grad and distance learning courses! Given the professional nature of the programmes taught at coach lane it has a ‘grown up’ feel with a strong sense of community. Students can feel a little disconnected at this campus so NSU now has a dedicated member of Students’ Union staff and along with our 5 academic based societies and Yoga we are bringing the fun to Coach Lane and helping students based here get involved and make the most of their student experience. Rebecca is a Mental Health Nursing Student who started in March 2015 – Yep that’s right, about 300 students at coach lane start in March instead of September putting them on a totally different timetable to other students. Here’s what Rebecca told us:

I’ve been a student at Coach Lane for six months now and I find it’s packed full of staff that really know what they’re doing and are focused on getting the best from you. I was encouraged to become a member of the committee for the Mental Health Nursing Society and I’m really pleased that I took the advice for the new ideas it’s given me. I find that Coach Lane being further out from Newcastle means I can focus on my studying but that’s not to say that I’m not distracted by the huge cups of coffee on offer and the best stocked sweet shop, ever! Both of which are ran by NSU.

This academic year is set to be the best yet for Coach Lane students. We had the biggest Freshers Fair ever with over 50 stalls – and who can forget that popcorn and candy floss?!?

It’s sad to think that at twenty one years old, I now feel more pressure than ever to look good, or other people’s versions of good. Social media websites are a huge part of everyone’s life now, but they are so cluttered with articles from everything from Kim K’s contour to fake slimming tablets and photoshopped pictures, that it seems every day there is something new that I need to aspire to be, and I’m talking from the slightly odd to the downright stupid. It has to be mentioned, that although social media seems to be the springboard where this escalates from, but it is us, as users, that are adding and adhering to the problem – need I explain trolling? I’m talking the ridiculous to the stupidity of people making me believe that my legs are some sort of weird shape and because of that, they won’t hold my weight, or that my hair is two shades darker than what its acceptable and even that because my big toe is slightly smaller than

where it is normal to feel embarrassed or unhappy with ourselves, and that’s not right. According to the Daily Mail Online, a whopping 91% of those interviewed had problems with their bodies and shockingly 90% of teenagers think the same. No doubt the unreal images of models that the media portray to us is having a major life impact in teens and this needs to stop. We’re stuck choosing filters and

loving yourself comes from within and cannot be faked or learnt. Make peace with your perceived flaws and imperfections and realise that you are usually the only one who sees them in such detail. You are good enough and loving yourself is the best thing you can do”. That being said, body confidence should come naturally, but unfortunately there days that is not always the case. So I’m here to remind

“It seems every day there is something new that I need to aspire to be...”

the next, that everyone will notice it and I’d have to have a thick cloud of anxiety, disgust and shame over my head. Please note that all these are examples from girls on my previous course, no joke. So finally, I have grown sick of these ridiculous body and beauty standards, and I am here to say a long awaited farewell to shaming and hello to loving yourself! So here’s something obvious – we’re all different! If we all looked the same, that would be boring. So why are we shaming our differences when we should be embracing and even flaunting them? When we’re not fat shaming, we are slamming skinny girls and from this, we’re creating a culture

editing our pictures before posting them online, and tagging them with “not sure about this one :/” when we know we took at least 50 similar selfies and tried 10 different camera angles before we took it. We now seem to be caught up in pleasing others that we’ve forgotten about who we need to be happy for – ourselves! I’ve recently been talking to Georgina Horne; blogger, rat lover, Harry Potter fanatic and model for her own range of plus size clothing range called Lady Voluptuous. She’s a body confidence advocate and she believes that we all need to be comfortable in our own skin to truly appreciate our beauty. Georgina tells me that; “Just like loving another person,

Yes, it may be a slow process and some days you’ll see a bad photo from the night before and want to slump in front of the TV, re-watching The Office US for the umpteenth time whilst shovelling Ben and Jerry’s until the pain goes away, but what’s the point? We are who you are, and we are loved by family and friends, so the only thing left is to love yourself for, well yourself! So what if your arms look big in that t-shirt, or that one time your shoes didn’t match your dress exactly, we need to be happy in who we are for the benefit of ourselves. words // DEAN WILSON

Freshers words // Rebecca Jackson reshers week is just around the corner, a week full of late night drinking, partying and waking up with a face full of make up, (we all do it) resulting in tired skin, clogged pores and the odd spot (or two). Ladies here is a few tips and products to revive and revitalise your skin getting you back to your fresh faced fabulous self. First of all, ladies, your skin needs a rest, wearing make up day and night means your skin never has chance to breathe, everything needs oxygen and your skin is no different. So remember to take off your make up whenever you can, or in Fresher’s Week whenever you can remember! Like everything there is always corners to be cut, but don’t cut corners when taking off your make up, ditch the face wipes! It is worth investing in a good cleanser toner and moisturiser it may seem pointless when there is a 3in1 facial wipe, quick easy and simple but using

the three products separately does make a difference and each one has a different purposes, most importantly it removes your make up from deep within your pores unlike a face wipe, where make up can just seem removed. Cleansing, toning and moisturising, the 3 rituals we all know but don’t forget the eye make up remover, with heavy eye make up and late nights eyes can appear tired. Eye make up remover, is designed specifically to remove your eye make up lightly, the skin around your eyes is a lot thinner ageing a lot quicker than your normal skin, so needs to be looked after. Oily skin, dry skin, normal skin; exfoliation is so important, helping your skin deal with it’s many layers. For exfoliation knowing your skin type is essential, this is so your able to know when to exfoliate and with what products, yes it all sounds complicated but it’s all about a skin routine. Freshers week does result in a bad diet, lack of sleep and lots of drinking

also resulting in spots, even though the key to spot free skin is prevention, what every fresher needs is a zit zapper. Tackling spots overnight, making you spot free for the next night out. The key to prevention of spots is aloe vera, a 2014/2015 craze that really does work. Not only do these aloe vera products moisturise your skin in face washes and creams you can drink aloe vera helping your skin maintain moisture but also detoxing your body at the same time, which is normally also needed after freshers week. So ladies, remember these tips and you’ll have flawless freshers skin before, after and during the week of madness.

First and foremost - these are not holy brow commandments, or a universally agreed method on how to achieve the one true brow, it’s just how I like to do mine. If yours are totally different and you think mine are gross (first, mean) then keep doing you boo and don’t let a magazine dictate how you should look! Also, if you don’t do anything to them that’s fine too- you’re perfect as you are!

1. Pluck those damn brows hun. There is nothing worse on this earth than when people try to pencil a new brow shape on top of existing hairs, just pretending that the hair isn’t there!? Moderately (don’t go overboard) pluck them into shape before applying product. Benefitcosmetics.co.uk has a great ‘mapping’ section to see how to pluck them for your face shape.

2. With a small angled brush, sweep a brow pomade (Anastasia Beverly Hills, £15) or, if you’re poor like me, a fab dupe which is Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner in brown (eBay £2.80), across the top of your brow. Take your time, you can do this in one smooth line or in little dashes, whatever works! Tip- and this works for gel eyeliner on your eyes too- if the gel is too sticky and drags across your skin, microwave the little pot for around 15 seconds. It’ll melt the product slightly, making it runnier and easier to apply- just make sure not to use too much! You can also do this with a sharp brow pencil, whatever works for you.

3. Repeat along the bottom edge of the brow, and using the remaining product on the brush (don’t add more), wiggle it into the main body of the brow and the front of the brow. This way, the front is defined but not a solid line.

4. #Fave, concealer! Using a (different!) small makeup brush, paint around your brows in a concealer that either matches your skin tone or is a shade lighter. This really makes your edges sharp, and fixes up any mistakes you might have made.

5. Blend in the concealer! I like using a damp Beauty Blender, which is the best thing ever. They’re £16 and are really worth the money, and will save you hours in makeup application as you can use it for everything! Get a feel for it with a cheap knock off from Primark for £1 but know that the real deal is infinitely softer and bouncier, and stipples quickly and easily for a flawless, airbrushed finish.

6. This is optional, I know that some of you may be looking at these and thinking jeez, what on earth is he thinking, but I like my brows BOLD honey: #sorryboutit. Anyways, here I went along the edges of my brows with a clean dry angled brush and some brown brow powder, although a matching eyeshadow would work just as well. This helped me fix anywhere the concealer may have covered some brow I didn’t want it to, and pulls it all together for me. I also applied a little bit of powder highlight (compare pics 5 & 6) under my arch to lift my brow bone, and also a little in the inner corner of my eye because it’s hella cute. You can use whatever suits you for this, I used a slightly shimmery highlight from a Sleek contour pallette (£6.49), but a light eyeshadow would do the trick too. Finish with a clear brow gel if you want to keep those feisty brows in place, or spritz with a makeup fixing spray.

Mod girl revival for A/W 2015

4 The tren ch coat

words // LUCY TALLEN

The current landscape for women’s wardrobes is particularly strong, a small number of classic mod items are essential to the 2015 mod girl. Brands such as Harrington, Fred Perry and Dr Marten typically dominate the market. However, the high street is now offering sizeable competition for the upcoming winter period.

Mary Quant was a 1960s mod designer who iconically fashioned the miniskirt. Although they had already been debuted, Quant created the more daring, shorter variety which quickly became popular. Urban Outfitters and Topshop are currently stocking some of the best selections of 60s inspired miniskirts. Often modelled by Alexa Chung and Cara Delevingne, styles range from buttonup a-lines to high-waisted kilts and corduroy.

The masculine boyfriend shirt was worn in the early days by film character: Annie Hall. Paired with high-waisted jeans, it had first become possible to be feminine using masculine silhouettes. A new purpose had been found for men’s shirts that

3 The mannishly styled shoe was frequently seen worn by 1960s poster girl: Twiggy. Chelsea boots, loafers, bowling shoes and brogues were all popular shoe trends for the fashion conscious during this time. Popular ‘60s shoe styles have continued to rise time and again with mod fashion. Flat shoes especially are set to reign high street shoe departments this season. Next, Shuh, Topshop and Jack Wills all showcase outstanding collections.

4 Tailoring was also a mod essential. The double-breasted coat was a staple item for both men and women, whether it be cropped, belted or vinyl. Rolling Stones groupie: Marianne Faithfull showed the nation how it should be worn. The trench coat is already a great part of Burberry’s heritage. It features heavily in the brand’s autumn / winter campaign as it recalls London’s ‘Swinging Sixties’ spirit in a bohemian, ‘Beatnik’ form. Double-breasted jackets are hitting

the high street in abundance as a fundamental mod feature. Mod presence in our clothing has never been emitted entirely, ever since its emergence in the 1950s by a group of men called ‘Modernists’. They were identified by modern jazz, Lambretta scooters and a firm focus on fashion. The trend became well known in the 1960s as the music scene grew. Female mods would traditionally wear mens trousers and shirts, flat shoes and little makeup. They wore pale foundation with browny tones on their eyes. Short hair styles were also popular. A famous altercation was struck with a fellow subculture - the ‘Rockers’ during this era of prominence. There were numerous riots between mods and rockers that often made news articles. A series of come-backs have emerged since the dying down of the mod scene, in the ‘80s and early ’90s. More recently, artists like Jake Bugg, Miles Kane and Liam Fray (from Courteeners) have brought the mod appearance back into the public eye. In addition to male role models inspiring fashion, famous female faces are also making underground dressing ever more glamorous to women. Gwyneth Paltrow was recently spotted successfully putting a mod touch on a pantsuit. These influences mean that the high street is arming us with affordable mod-girl updates this winter, so that Sixties London can continue to live on.

became a surprisingly elegant look for women. Francisco Costa, Calvin Klein’s creative director, has been musing mods for CK’s autumn / winter collection. Oversized cuffs, collars and pockets have been added to simply styled shirts to give them a mod-era finish. The high street equivalent can effortlessly be found in Mango and on the ASOS marketplace website, for example.

The original mod scene has been continually referenced in fashion through the decades. The 2015 vision stems back to the immaculate ‘Teddy Boy’ era and accommodates a number of key pieces this season.

WORDS // LAUREN ROSE BODEN

So I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have a spare room to use as a dressing room right now. Most people reading this are probably in Halls or shared student houses and might not have much space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make the most of it and proudly display all of your clothes and beauty items! After all, I’m sure they weren’t cheap, and a nice environment makes everyone happier and more relaxed. So all of you beauty addicts and shopaholics, here are some tips on making the most of your space...

Clothes Racks Clothes racks are a great way of displaying all of your beautiful finds, and they are a lot cheaper than a wardrobe! But be warned – all clothes you want to hang on them must be ironed and kept nice! (and keep your less desirable clothes in a draw).

Keep your make-up and brushes presented nicely If you’re like me make-up costs you a lot of money, or even if it doesn’t you should still look after it. Faux glass candle holders from Ikea are perfect for storing make-up and so are floral pots which I use to keep my brushes organised.

Keep all of your empty boxes and store things in them Perfume gift set boxes, boxes that jewellery came in and even shoe boxes are perfect for storing your many, many pointless cosmetics without taking away the glam, in fact it sort of makes your room feel like a shop (or maybe that’s just me). The best ones to keep are the pretty ones, and the fancier ones you probably got for Christmas and your birthday, and then cram them full of stuff you hardly use but need to keep because you might need it at some point but probably wont… and no one is any the wiser! P.S. Keep perfume bottles too – they look pretty.

ANYTHING can be used to store things You probably only use your suitcase now and again and then stick it on top of your wardrobe, why not use it to store more things? It’s pretty pointless having an empty suitcase so I use mine to store shoes and when I need it I just empty the shoes out, it’s not like I will be seeing them when I’m away. When I get back, I swap it back over – genius.

IKEA is your friend If you have some spare cash invest in some good shelves from IKEA. I favour the “KALLAX” collection, it’s perfect for displaying your lovely things and it’s not too expensive. Small stands or tables are perfect for creating space in front of a radiator without blocking it off. If you’re a little clumsy like me, a rug doesn’t hurt either!

GIG GUIDE ith festival season over and students settling back into uni, Tyneside has no shortage of gigs to look forward to over the coming months. October sees the 10th anniversary of the opening of Newcastle’s O2 Academy, and it will be celebrating its first decade with a night of home grown talent on the 14th. Little Comets play alongside Du Blonde (formerly Beth Jeans Houghton) and Sunderland’s finest, Hyde and Beast, in a show that kicks off a fantastic autumn run of gigs for both the Academy and the city. Earlier in the month, former Smiths guitarist and indie hero Johnny Marr visits Newcastle University on Tuesday 11th. Fans of Marr will be delighted to see him bring a clutch of Smiths classics, as well as his own solid solo catalogue to intimate settings before

recording his third album next year. Elsewhere, Spector will preview tracks from their new album, ‘Moth Boys’ at The Cluny the week after (18th) Also in October, the Academy hosts reformed shoegaze titans Ride on the 18th. The band, contemporaries of My Bloody Valentine, are currently enjoying a long overdue reunion tour. Fans too young to enjoy their live show back in the day, ethereal and intense in equal measure, should catch this one. Bring your ear plugs! The following day (19th), The Cribs kick off their ‘For All My Sisters’ tour, also at the Academy. The Jarman brothers, now with three consecutive Top 10 albums under their belts, remain one of Britain’s most vital live acts and will no doubt go down a treat as they return to Tyneside following their 6 Music Festival appearance earlier this year. November at the Academy is equally as strong. The mighty Foals bring

their increasingly muscular sound to Newcastle on Nov 11th, while the hugely popular The 1975 preview their eagerly anticipated new look and direction on the 15th. Also celebrating a 10th birthday this year is the fantastic indie pop clatter of ‘A Certain Trigger’, the debut album by North East favourites Maximo Park. They celebrate by airing it in full at the City Hall on the 18th. Fans who may find the likes of Maximo Park too soft for their tastes are spoilt for choice on the 20th, with Newcastle Uni hosting riotous punk duo Slaves while Public Enemy and The Prodigy bring the noise at the Metro Radio Arena in what could be the gig of the year. Earlier in the month (2nd), The Arena also sees classic Cock-Rockers Motley Crue bring Alice Cooper along in support of what they promise (Thank God!) will be their final tour. Get yourself along, if that’s what you’re into...

Musicians

to watch this year

Jack Garratt

Raury

This incredibly talented, bearded, multi-instrumentalist is definitely someone to check out this year. He got properly noticed at the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds Festival 2014, where his lively performance wowed the audience. Not only can he play the piano, guitar and sampler at the same time, his style varies dramatically depending on what he wants to get across. His songs range from the EDM hit ‘Chemical’ to the thoughtful ‘I Couldn’t Want You Anyway’ to the guitar heavy ‘Weathered’. He can blend jazz, folk and dubstep effortlessly to create something original and exciting. Jack Garratt is showing no signs of stopping, so keep an eye out for this one.

Incredibly talented and only 19 years old, Raury has started to make waves from across the Atlantic. After featuring on SBTRKT’s 2014 album ‘Wonder Where We Land’, he released a solid stream of well received singles. His debut ‘Cigarette Song’ earned him a place on BBC’s Sound of 2015 and he even featured on the Hunger Games: Mockingbird – Part 1. Although primarily a guitar-playing singer-songwriter, Raury incorporates gospel, soul, rap and even electronic beats into his songs making him a key artist to watch out for.

BØRNS This colourful performer’s debut ‘Electric Love’ has already been clocked by Taylor Swift as ‘an instant classic’, so what more convincing do you need? Sounding like a reimagining of MIKA, BØRNS brings exciting synth and catchy choruses to the fore to create an all-round fun electro-pop sound. In an age where pop songs are becoming dark and moody, this new artist is a breath of fresh air and reminds us that sometimes music is just fun. He’s been touring with Charli XCX and making links all over the music scene in America, so I’d be surprised if one or two of his tracks don’t work their way into the charts. Top track // Electric Love

Prides

Ryn Weaver

Josef Salvat

Following in the likes of CHVRCHES, Prides contributes to the collection of Scottish anthemic synth-pop outfits. Their songs are fast paced and bassy; the perfect soundtrack to get you going. After becoming noticed by remixing and covering various tracks on Soundcloud, Prides’ own releases have been well received and praised by fellow acts like Nine Nesbitt and Jack Garratt. Their uniquely intimate yet grand sound can be found in volumes on their debut album, ‘The Way Back Up’. Top Track // I Should Know Better

Ryn Weaver’s debut track ‘OctaHate’ became an instant hit on YouTube and Soundcloud; within hours it received praise from Harry Styles, Jessie Ware and Hayley Williams of Paramore fame. She could have very easily have floated by on the strength of this track but instead she focused on creating interesting and intimate indie-pop gems. Her debut album ‘The Fool’ has been compared to the likes of Florence Welch. Her stripped down live performances (check out ‘Pierrè’ on YouTube for a taste) wonderfully compliment her heavily produced electronic sound, which shows that she is definitely a musician to look out for. Top Track // OctaHate

As is the way with some great artists, Josef Salvat came to prominence after his cover of Rhianna’s ‘Diamonds’ was used in an advert. Coming from the dark side of the spectrum, he blends old fashioned 80s electro-pop with sensitive vocals to create a satisfyingly broody atmosphere. Although it was a cover that got him discovered, his own tracks focus on his own conflicted feelings to create thoughtful and catchy songs. ‘Hustler’ shows him at his moodiest, though songs like ‘Open Season’ show that he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Kimberly Anne Kimberly Anne came to prominence after gathering a large following on YouTube with her distinctive hollow voice. Her haunting cover of the 90s classic ‘Show Me Love’ was sampled by Sam Feldt and has become a summer anthem. She has also had her single ‘Hard As Hello’ remixed by Bastille and she has featured on the ‘Made in Chelsea’ soundtrack Her true strength is in her song writing; her simple yet hard-hitting lyrics combined with delicate guitar and vocal layering lead to a strong and confident sound that can’t be missed.

Amber Run Blending the folk-rock of Mumford & Sons, the choral strength of Bastille and the youthful angst of The 1975, Amber Run has created a sound that’s both familiar and unique. This five-piece outfit has been making their way round the festival scene and rose to prominence at record speed. Their fourth ever show was at the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading Festival 2013. Their debut album ‘5AM’ is the perfect mixture of rock and soul and wonderfully sums up what it’s like to be young. From the unbearably tender ‘I Found’ to the high-octane ‘Hurricane’, Amber Run have mastered the art of making thoughtful and exciting music. Top Track // Spark

2015 has been a brilliant year for new music; with a diverse range of acts from James Bay to Years & Years being played on the radio, it’s a great time to hear something new. Despite these big names appearing out of nowhere, there are some artists who have yet to reach the dizzying heights of stardom but are well on their way to getting there. From jazz to EDM to rock to acoustic, there are some up-and-comers who really stand out from the crowd. Maybe you’re looking for a new musical icon or just fancy listening to something new, here are my top ten musicians to check out this year.

Låpsley Låpsley’s music demonstrates that electronic music doesn’t have to be all about big beats and dirty stinking bass; her music is spare, delicate and, in its own way, beautiful. This British singer-songwriter wrote, performed, produced and even designed the album to her own music in her bedroom before being discovered by Radio 1. Her quiet and simple style can lull you into a kind of sleep and is great to listen to if you need something to relax your mind. Top Track // Brownlow

Tor Miller Following the likes of Tom Odell, this heartthrob is on his way to making pianos cool again. His voice is big enough to create beautiful imageries of the scenary around him, mainly life in New York. Also like his British counterpart, he has one of those voices that is not tonally perfect but he sings like he really means it. His headline song ‘Midnight’ has been grabbing the attention of teenagers all across the globe. Top Track // Headlights

Culture Club Newcastle TV & Film History One may not automatically associate Newcastle and its environs, with film and TV talent, but you’d be surprised just how lucky we are. It is the birthplace of such celebrated film directors as the late Tony Scott, best known for ‘Top Gun’, and his older brother Ridley Scott, well-noted for ‘Blade Runner’. The actor Greg Wise, (husband of actress, author and screenplay writer, Emma Thompson) was also born in Newcastle. In addition the city is the birth place of the TV presenters duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, branded as Ant and Dec, and only recently Dec married here in St Michael’s Church. Among the university alumni, is the hilarious comedian and actor Rowan Atkinson recognized on the sitcoms, ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Mr. Bean’. He began his career with an engineering degree. Lee Hall who wrote ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Cooking with Elvis’, originated from Newcastle too. The list of alternative forms of talent connected with Newcastle goes on, with singers such as Sting and Cheryl Fernandez Versini, and the footballer Alan Shearer.

Tamara Boulton

If anyone has seen the original crime film ‘Get Carter’ (1971) starring Michael Caine, you might recognise the Tyne Bridge and other landmarks, as the film was mainly set here. The noteworthy TV drama series ‘Our Friends in the North’, filmed in Newcastle, not only won innumerable awards but also kick started the careers of Christopher Eccleston, Daniel Craig, Gina McKee and Mark Strong. Actor and singer Robson Green began his life and work here and later returned to star in the crime drama ‘Wire in the Blood’. Other popular TV series that are located in the north east include ‘Inspector George Gently’ and ‘Vera.’ Let’s not forget that this city has been an inspiration for many creators such as the late prizewinning novelist and poet Julia Darling, some of whose writing was based on the area and its dialect. You never know what celeb you may see here. It was not that long ago that I saw Michelle Ryan aka ‘Bionic Woman’ walking down Grey Street, shopping bags in hand. Our city is the quite the scene of talent after all.

Only 3 animated films have ever escaped from regularity by being nominated for Best Picture at the Oscar’s instead of just Best Animated Feature. These are Disney Pixar’s Up and Toy Story 3, amazingly not Toy Story, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Animated features such as Disney Pixar’s recent film Inside Out do something special that has been missing from recent Best Picture winners at the Oscar’s, and that is having a sense of universality. Most recent pictures have held 15 or 18 age ratings. Children wouldn’t begin to understand the themes in Birdman, and 12 Years a Slave, which won the year before, contains extreme and distressing violence. Inside Out is an intelligent, thoughtful film that uses child psychology in a sensitive and caring way. It teaches children that it is okay to feel sadness and that growing up is a natural part of life, it also teaches parents that their children have complicated emotions, even from an early age. So, why shouldn’t a film such as Inside Out, which sends important messages to children and adults alike, be able to win best picture? In recent years The Academy that votes on the Best Picture panel has been renowned for being too old and set in their ways, so maybe it is time for a modernisation shake-up of the eligibility of non-drama films in the Best Picture category. There is the possibility that Inside Out will suffer the same fate that Boyhood did last year, which is not being released during the Awards Season. Usually Best Picture nominees are released around Christmas/New Year, with films in contention that are ready for release earlier than this often being pushed back. Unfortunately, there is an inevitable

forgetfulness when the voting occurs of films that were out half a year ago, especially since animated films have so rarely been nominated. Inside Out has been used for several advertising campaigns, in fact I had seen the characters in Subway and Sky adverts before even seeing the film, which could also stand against how strong the film is. The two past Disney Pixar films that have been nominated for Best Picture have both been extremely well critically received. On the popular film reviewing website Rotten Tomatoes, Up shares a 98% approval rating with the Hurt Locker that won Best Picture the same year, and Toy Story 3 is 5% higher than The Kings Speech which

WORDS // Jamie Kelly

beat it to Best Picture, with a 99% approval rating. Inside Out is currently at 98%, which is the second highest rating for 2015 so far. Pixar and Disney have both dominated the best animated feature awards since it was started in 2001 with Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away and Dreamworks’ Shrek being the main exceptions, therefore a Disney or Disney Pixar film, possibly Inside Out, is the most likely home of the first animated film to win Best Picture, if it ever happens. I give Inside Out an 8/10 chance to be nominated, but only 2/10 to actually win Best Picture.

Why is it funny? - With it’s gut busting performances, one especially comical dress fitting and the shining light that is Kristen Wiig you’ll be howling every minute with this film and you and your friends will be quoting for a long time to come

Why is it good? This action classic has everything you could want: violence, high stakes and well trimmed beards. You and your flatmates will be shocked and impressed by just how much one man can do against an army of gun toting terrorists. An absolute classic!

The Conjuring (2013) Vera Farming, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor The Perron family have just moved into a grand new house but the realtor forgot to mention it’s haunted to high hell! With all money tied up in the house they have no option but to call paranormal investigators Lorraine & Ed Warren (based on a real life couple) to fight the demons within! Why is it Scary? With the mass production of lazy found footage films this film refreshingly breathes genuine horror from the 70s and 80s. With no time to calm yourself, the scares keep coming and coming and coming! I strongly advise you bring along your duvet to hide behind with this one.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

PAPER TOWNS FILM REVIEW

WORDS // Brittany Pape It seems to happen all the time nowadays; popular young-adult novels are picked up by Hollywood studios and turned into glossy feature films for our viewing pleasure. Brought to you by the author of the tear jerking The Fault In Our Stars, John Green, Paper Towns is the latest in the long line of books being transported from the page to the big screen.

With an already global fan base, Paper Towns was without a doubt one of the most anticipated films of the summer and was a must-watch for many when it hit cinemas on 17th August. This coming of age drama follows Quentin Jacobsen (Nat Wolff ) on his quest to find his mysterious neighbour, and childhood sweetheart, Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne) after she goes missing. Audiences were perhaps most excited to see Cara Delevingne in her big film debut. Despite her limited amount of screen time, the model-turned-actress impresses in the role capturing Margo’s enigmatic personality and putting on a surprisingly convincing American accent. It’s safe to say that we will be seeing her face - and those trademark eyebrows – in plenty of films in the future. On the surface, the film appears to be your stereotypical teen romance flick – awkward teenage boy falls in love with the unattainable girl next door. However, Paper Towns instead offers characters with complexity and imperfection as well as notable performances from its lead actors. Despite not pulling on your heart strings

in the same way as its older sibling The Fault in Our Stars, which has us sobbing at the back of the cinema. Paper Towns is a coming of age drama with a sweet story and an uplifting soundtrack that features the likes of HAIM and Vance Joy. Be aware hard-core Paper Towns fans, the film is not exactly the same as the much-loved book. Some alterations have been made in the adaptation. Do not worry though the film has gained the author’s full approval. In an interview with POPSUGAR, Green stated that the film is “faithful to the book’s themes”. So

hopefully you will not be too upset about these tweaks. Excitement is already brewing for the next John Green adaptation as yet another of his books is about to be given the Hollywood treatment. Looking For Alaska is due to be released next year.

Everybody’s Gone to the

RAPTURE GAME REVIEW Created by games developer The Chinese Room, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture tells the story of Yaughton, a remote fictional Shropshire village in the wake of a massive-scale disaster that has destroyed all life around it. As a nameless and formless individual, you set out to solve the mystery behind the village and its inhabitants, by piecing together individual back stories of the main characters.

From the beginning, it is clear that Rapture is not just your typical game, and is rather more of an interactive based narrative. How you play the game itself and find information is a heavy spoiler in itself and is something you have to play in order to fully understand. Throughout the five hour game time, you move silently through the world to which there is no set path to follow and instead revolves around the idea of exploration, which you feel compelled to

WORDS // Antonie Thomas

do, due to brilliantly crafted environment in front of you. Although many of your own searches tend to end up empty, this almost helps in navigating the world and focus on things you probably would have missed otherwise. When it comes to playing the game, there are very few things you can do other than explore. Operating lights, opening and closing doors and turning on radios feel more like a novelty alongside the main story, whilst your inability to speed up the games pace can become frustrating. Tracking your progress also becomes confusing, with no menu screen or inventory of any form to help along the way which ultimately leaves the thoroughness of the exploring up to you. However, Rapture excels most when it comes to the small details, with objects littering the world such as bloody tissues and half eaten food giving a further clue

into mystery behind the disappearances. This alongside the eerie silence puts you on edge with you almost half expecting a horde of the undead to come running straight at you at any point which goes hand in hand with the unconventional British surroundings. On the whole, it is easy to see why Sony made great strides to make Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture a PlayStation 4 exclusive. It offers a unique playing experience and stunning world that feels familiar and one which you will always want to revisit, despite the short game play time. The environmental storytelling, and strong character interactions all come together to build a great and satisfying mysterious horror-like tale.

REVIEW

are bullet back

WORDS // Edward Jones

Though these individual elements are promising, the meat and potatoes of some of the songs leave something to be desired. There are some relatively weak choruses such as the title track Venom, You Want A Battle? and Army of Noise, the latter two being singles. This begs the question, why release two of the songs with weak choruses to promote the album? Presumably this is more to do with targeting the band’s split demographics rather than just putting out the best songs; Army of Noise certainly demonstrates a lot of the heavier features fans have been missing lately, whereas You Want A Battle caters more to newer fans. This isn’t a bad thing either, because Venom really does offer the best of both worlds.

ALBUM REVIEW Venom opens with an eerie instrumental build-up entitled V and yes, Bullet, we see what you did there with the roman numeral and album title, very clever. By the time the instrumental moves into the opening riff of No Way Out and the fast-paced double pedal action that has largely eluded the band since 2008’s Scream Aim Fire kicks in, it’s clear that Bullet for My Valentine want you to know one thing - they’re back.

Bullet For My Valentine face a stylistic challenge with their fifth album in balancing their distinctive sound of raw, often stripped back, verses building and memorable, melodic choruses with a much-needed injection of metal after Temper Temper’s relatively Rocky vibe. The result is a good variety of metal tropes such as double-pedal kick drum, screaming vocals, and big loud guitar riffs alongside some catchy melodic choruses.

Venom has some great songs to offer. Those that stand out for me are No Way Overall, Venom presents a treat for the ears of any Rock or Metal fan and Bullet’s reclaim of their heavier style, while still comprising the more melodic elements. There isn’t a Tears Don’t Fall on the album, but songs like that often only come once in a band’s career and I don’t suppose they sat down with the intention of writing a huge arena song at the time; like half-cooked pasta sometimes songs stick and sometimes they don’t. But after four albums, the Bullet boys certainly knew what they were doing with this one. Bullet For My Valentine are touring the UK in October with While She Sleeps and Japanese metal band Coldrain. Unfortunately, there is no Newcastle date so fans will have to get themselves to Carlisle or Middlesbrough.

Students could be forgiven for thinking they’d stepped into an episode of World’s Strongest Man this term as some of the most powerful athletes on the planet make Northumbria University their home. In fact the muscle men pounding the campus will be members of the Tongan Rugby Union squad with the South Sea islanders using the city campus as their World Cup tournament base. And Tonga’s choice is testimony to Northumbria’s world-class facilities and famous welcome. The University is proud to be part of the Rugby World Cup 2015 as an official Team Base. But Northumbria was only designated as a host training venue for the Tongan team after rigorous inspections and discussions with RWC2015 staff and visiting team management during the past two years. The Tongans will use the University’s outdoor grass pitches at Bullocksteads and the indoor training hall, fitness facilities and swimming pool at Sport Central as they prepare for their match against current Champions New Zealand in the second of three fixtures taking place at St James’ Park during the tournament. Further to being an official tournament team base and as part of Northumbria’s involvement in RWC2015, the University welcomed the Webb Ellis Cup to its City Campus. The iconic trophy was showcased to guests on day 53 of its 100 day tour around the UK and Ireland - marking the final countdown to the Rugby World Cup 2015. Northumbria players invited to the tour event included women’s 1st XV skipper, scholar and England Under 20 scrum half Caity Mattinson plus England Students star Alex Westgarth. Guests were given the opportunity to take photographs with the trophy, as well as participate in Q&A sessions with some of the University’s current players and Sporting Alumni.
