Des Québécoises au Mexique
(tr. Quebeckers in Mexico) Screendance project Des Québécoises au Mexique is a collective, interdisciplinary research and creation project, looking to address the Quebecois tourism culture in Mexico. In December 2016, contemporary dance collectives Dans son salon and Les Débrouill-Art(des) will travel to Mexico and begin their collaboration with videographer Robin Pineda Gould. The team intends on travelling though many cities in Mexico, collecting inspiration in order to create a “fictive documentary” integrating dance, theater and humour. The travelers desire to live an exotic experience is a phenomenon that can lead to prejudice and strange behaviours. By portraying Quebecois tourism in Mexico using self-mockery and satire, this research project aims to develop a critical gaze on this “traveler’s phenomenon”. Each member of the team wishes to be transformed by their stay in Mexico, to encounter its culture and to share their experience with the people of Quebec. They aim to portray a different view of Mexico than the image sold by the medias and travelling industry.

Artistic Statement Both established in Montreal (Quebec, Canada), Dans son salon and Les Débrouill-Art(des) are contemporary dance collectives with similar approaches. They both have a collaborative practice and are interested in creating playful choreographic works. Both are interested in erasing the borders between artistic forms, distorting and creating a crossover between them. They use this method to then confront the traditional codes of live performance; their propositions are often self-mocking critics of social conventions. Influenced by clown and grotesque art, both collectives develop absurd humour that relates to everyday, banal non-sense. They aim to question and analyze their personal aesthetic preferences, without censure, in order to understand their desires and instincts.
