WELCOME I'm so excited to be bringing Bloom back for 2016! This year’s event has just bloomed into something greater than I imagined. Such a wealth of knowledge by leading wellness experts will be shared, and I'm so excited for the impact this will have on many people’s lives. They say that life is one long learning process, and I have to say that 2015 was another major milestone of learning for me. As Marlies Hobbs shares in her talk 'Your Biggest Challenges can be your Greatest Gifts', this rings so true. Whilst in the storm of a situation it may be hard to see the light, but if you ride it out the best you can, those challenges can turn out to be some of your greatest gifts, especially when you can pass these gifts on and help others from your own experience. My challenges in 2015 made me realise the importance of emotional and spiritual wellness, and how love and connection can trump even the most powerful of superfood smoothies! So you'll find this year at Bloom another piece of the wellness puzzle has been slotted into place, as we take more of a focus and awareness on social connection, spiritual connection, emotional connection and self love. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your health goals? We’ve picked 5 habits that will sky-rocket your health, without needing to overhaul your entire life. These are the changes that will give you the greatest return of wellness from your investment of effort! 1. Stay Hydrated Do you feel chronically tired and sluggish? You might have considered the more obvious reasons like stress, sleep or poor nutrition. Yet your solution might actually be a lot more subtle… Are you getting enough water? Drinking more might sound easy but many people do struggle to fit in the recommended 0.5 to 0.8 gallons (2 to 3 liters) per day. Try drinking 2 glasses first thing upon rising. Use meal times to remind yourself to drink. Keep a drink bottle within easy sight to remind you to drink. Set a timer or reminders on your phone. Flavour your water naturally. 2. Keep Clean Teeth (And Try Oil Pulling!) In addition to regular brushing and flossing, oil pulling is an amazing daily ritual to care for your teeth and overall health. It is an ancient Ayurvedic tradition that simply involves swirling oil in your mouth for 5 to 20 minutes before spitting it out. Natural and organic claims are everywhere, but what do they really mean? So you’re already in-conversion to the green lifestyle. You buy organic foods and look out for green beauty products. You try to avoid as many toxic chemicals as you can, but when it comes to the crunch, you have a hard time deciphering all those label claims... natural, organic, no parabens, no sodium lauryl sulfate, no petroleum... arggh... what do they all mean? Let’s take a quick quiz to test your current knowledge of the claims made in the natural beauty industry...
What is a truly ‘natural’ cosmetic ingredient?
a) A naturally-derived ingredient (eg. Cocoamide DEA from coconut oil). b) An ingredient manufactured with green chemistry principles. c) An ingredient that comes from nature. d) An ingredient harvested and processed without a chemical reaction.
What does ‘organic’ mean?
a) Made with at least 70% of organic ingredients. b) Made with ingredients from farms that don’t use pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. c) A carbon-based compound. d) A sustainable farming practice that prohibits genetic engineering, pesticides, synthetic fertilisers and antibiotics.
What does ‘certified organic’ mean?
a) 95% organic ingredients (including water). b) 85% organic ingredients. c) 70% certified organic ingredients, excluding water. d) 95% certified organic ingredients (excluding water). Although there is only one wholly accurate and truthful answer to all three questions (D), ALL of the above claims are currently being used in the natural cosmetic industry. It’s no wonder we are a little confused about these claims!
What does “natural” and “organic” mean on cosmetic labels?
A truly natural cosmetic ingredient is one that is extracted and processed without a chemical reaction. This results in a safe, edible, food-grade ingredient. But if we use this definition of natural, the vast majority of “natural” products on the market are not truly natural. The vast majority of the cosmetic industry defines “natural” as an ingredient that is derived from a natural source. The trend today is to see long unpronouncable chemical names, followed by the phrase such as “derived from coconut oil”. Make no mistake: these ‘naturally-derived’ (I.e. synthetic) ingredients have been manufactured via highly industrial chemical processes and many of the processing aids used, and the impurities created, during manufacture have been linked to asthma, learning disabilities, infertility, birth defects and cancer. For example, sodium laureth sulfate (which is usually claimed to be derived from coconuts) has been found to contain dangerous levels of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane; both potent toxins known to cause cancer.
Now, let’s look at “organic”.
The term “organic” refers to an ecological and sustainable farm management system that prohibits the use of genetic engineering, synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, antibiotics and artificial growth hormones. Organic agriculture is about growing plants in healthy soil minus chemicals.
But what about “organic” products?
If organic is about a farming system, then what differentiates an “organic” moisturiser from the rest? Unfortunately, “organic” has now travelled the same road as “natural”. They have now been relegated to slick greenwashing claims. There are no governing standards to back up either claim in Australia. However, there is a very simple way to verify that an “organic” product is genuine, and that is to look for the certification logo. A certified organic product is comprised of a minimum 95% organic (excluding water). A certified organic claim means an independent third party guarantee of the authenticity and integrity of every ingredient and is independently regulated by certification bodies. Only certified organic products can bear a certifiers logo. With over 70% of the Australian organic market, Australian Certified Organic (ACO) is the largest and most well respected certifier in the industry. Other certifiers that currently certify beauty products in Australia include NASAA and OFC.
The key to remember – if there’s no logo, it’s not truly organic!
By choosing certified organic beauty products, you are supporting businesses that value integrity, and are willing to invest in the organic verification of each and every one of the ingredients used in their products. It also means that you can be assured of the purity and safety of the product. Organic standards are very strict regarding the kinds of ingredients that are allowed in their formulas. No toxic preservatives, no petrochemical derivatives, no formaldehyde-donating preservatives. There are stringent guidelines around the toxicology and environmental sustainability of all the ingredients allowed in organic beauty products. Certified organic products are your guarantee of purity and integrity.

Have you ever found yourself standing with the fridge door open and your mouth full of chocolate, despite having sworn to yourself you weren’t going to have any until the weekend? Or you signed up to the gym full of good intentions to get fit and paid your 3 month membership, only to go once and never return? How about finding yourself in yet another dud relationship, swearing to yourself the next one will be different, only to attract the exact same kind of dysfunctional mess again? These kind of battles can leave us despairing. Making a decision with our minds; thinking, wishing, hoping and madly repeating affirmations wanting to create a new outcome, only to have some mysterious force sweep it away over and over again can make you feel like a failure. But you are not a failure. You just need to know your behaviour is driven not by your mind and what you THINK you WANT, but by your subconscious and what it BELIEVES you NEED. And these two things can be vastly different. Let me explain... I want you to imagine you are standing on an iceberg. From here it looks like you are standing on something that is floating on top of the ocean. It looks separate from the ocean and something all of it’s own. But in reality if you’re able to go below the surface you’d see that the vast majority of the iceberg is below the surface. And it’s how this submerged part moves through the ocean that determines where the tip above the surface travels. So let’s imagine that the tip of the iceberg is your conscious mind. That part of you reading this article right now. It’s your thinking self. It’s the level of your

consciousness right up on the surface that can think logically and rationally. It can be creative. It understands time in terms of past, present and future. It’s really awesome but it’s limited. It can only focus on one or two things at once. Kids are screaming, someone knocks on the door and all of a sudden dinner’s burnt on the stove. When that third thing comes into your mind to juggle the first thing often gets dropped. Do you remember when you first learnt to drive a car? You had to concentrate so hard on the clutch and the gears and steering straight and checking your mirrors and you’re like “DON’T TALK TO ME I’M CONCENTRATING!” It took every ounce of your conscious mind to focus on what you were doing to make it work. Think about now. Have you ever driven home, pulled into the driveway and thought “My goodness! How’d I get here?” You can’t remember driving at all because your conscious mind was busy thinking about something else. What happened? Your subconscious took over. Your subconscious has a program that it has learnt from repetition and habit so that when you’re doing something familiar - driving home down familiar streets - the conscious mind can get distracted and the subconscious mind will step in. If we go back to our iceberg analogy the subconscious mind is the vast majority of the iceberg submerged under water out of sight and out of mind. It’s what is carrying you through life. Your conscious mind is on top experiencing the ride but your subconscious is driving the show. And unlike the conscious mind your subconscious cannot think logically or rationally. It can’t tell the difference between past and present. It is just full of automatic programs that kick in whenever triggered.
It’s a fantastic mechanism. There are millions of programs in your subconscious like walking and talking that you’ve learnt and don’t have to actively think about any more like when you were first learning them. However we all have a number of sabotaging programs, or limiting beliefs, that negatively influence our lives. We take on the majority of our programs in early childhood. Between the ages of two and approximately seven we are in a nearly permanent subconscious brainwave state. This is why young children can learn so much so quickly. However as well as language, walking, eating etc you’re also learning about relationships and your place in the world. Your value and worth. How men behave, how women behave. If, for example, you were exposed to relationships where men disrespected women you may have formed a subconscious belief that says “Men disrespect women”. Then as an adult you may find yourself attracted to men who have the matching belief that “Men disrespect women”. Thus finding yourself repeating a cycle of crap relationships and somehow never finding the ‘nice guys’ attractive. Your subconscious would actually feel repelled by them because they don’t fit your program of how men behave. It doesn’t matter how much your conscious mind may want something different, until you reprogram your subconscious you just won’t be attracted to the right kind of guy.
As well as early childhood programs, we also get our subconscious programming from inherited family patterns, habit and repetition (learning to drive) and times of shock and trauma that can create debilitating programs in a subconscious effort to avoid that unsafe experience happening again. Changing these sabotaging programs means changing the subconscious. And you can’t change the subconscious with your conscious mind. To reprogram the subconscious you need different tools. This is how therapies like kinesiology and hypnotherapy work. Today I choose to be exactly who I am
This is my morning affirmation. When I start my day with these words, I am cementing in my subconscious mind that I am who I am and if that is good enough for me, then that is good enough for the rest of the world. In a fairly image obsessed society, my mantra is -“I am not defined by my weight and I am not defined by my shape.” That wretched number on the scales; well it absolutely cannot determine my worth as a person. Is it thin thighs that change the world? Absolutely not! I believe in synchronicity. Everything comes to you in life at the perfect time. About ten years ago, I was offered an opportunity to train and work as a weight loss consultant in a medical clinic. I was battling a health issue that had really depleted me both mentally and physically. I welcomed this opportunity with open arms. Not only could I improve my own health with the education I was about to receive but also my family’s health and wellbeing. Originally, my role was to advise and coach women on how to lose weight and eat a well-balanced diet, but it didn’t take me long to realise that, good health is about so much more than eating salad and drinking green smoothies. The nutritional training was invaluable. I learnt so much about the importance of good food and its power to keep the body working to its full potential. It is interesting to note though, that mygreatest lessons were not from the nutritional educators that I studied with. My greatest teachers were the amazing women that I consulted with on a daily basis. On average I would coach up to ten women in a clinic per day. All of these women shared their struggles honestly and openly. There was a common thread that ran through almost every single conversation I ever had. That thread consisted of the fact that - as women, we have this tremendous ability to be really unkind to ourselves. We can spend way too much time focussing on what we think is wrong with us and absolutely not enough time on what is right with us. It saddened me to hear the way women spoke about themselves. For the most part, women ar-
rived at my office at their lowest ebb. Physically and verbally they would express their frustrations about everything that was weighing them down. There was absolutely no shortage of self-criticism. It was just as distressing to witness women set their mood for the day according to the number that was displayed on the scales. If that number wasn’t exactly what they had hoped for, the rest of the day was ruined. The most overwhelming aspect of consulting was listening to the negative self-talk. The women continuously pointed out all of the things they hated about themselves. It was exhausting, for them and it was just as exhausting for me. When I looked at each woman I consulted with, I never focussed on their size or their shape. All I could see in front of me were - amazing, smart, and talented, gifted women who just radiated warmth and love. Beautiful eyes, beautiful hearts, beautiful souls. After the women had flogged themselves verbally, I would always ask them this question “Would you speak to someone you loved like that?” Words are so powerful. On one hand they can uplift you, energise you and encourage you. On the other hand, they can destroy you. As vital as it is to pay attention to how we communicate with others, it is even more important to pay attention to how we speak about ourselves. My clients made me aware of how self-talk impacts our energy, our wellness, our self-esteem and our overall quality of life. Yes, words are powerful, so use them wisely particularly when you are talking about yourself.
It is not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and speak kindly to yourself. In fact, self-care and self-love is one of the greatest ways to show an example of positive self-esteem to everyone in your life. We must love ourselves enough to accept that each and every day we have the opportunity to really shine and if we choose to, we can light the way for so many other women as well. What you do each day, how you live your life, the contributions you make on a daily basis to the world, they are not defined by your weight, your shape, your hairstyle or how you look. They are defined by your heart and your soul. It is our birth right to have a healthy amount of self-worth. Although it is wonderful to be acknowledged by other people, it is so important to understand that it is actually our own responsibility to see that we are worthy of our own love and affection. A recent survey in Australia reported that the women who participated in this study had said at least 13 negative things about themselves every single day. Can you imagine if we all committed to saying 13 positive
things about ourselves every day? I wonder if for the next twenty-four hours, you would take the time to pay attention to your thoughts and also take notice of how you speak about yourself. More often than not, it is so routine to speak negatively about yourself; you are completely unaware of how frequently you do it. It can take time, perseverance, attention and strength to quit negative self-talk completely because for many of us it has become so deeply ingrained, and it is almost second nature. Once you are aware that you are doing it, understand that you will need to keep interrupting yourself and your thoughts to stop it altogether. Becoming aware of this behaviour is the key to quitting. Self-love requires courage, so be courageous. Have the strength to be exactly who you are. If we all pay attention to our self-talk and celebrate self-love, we will not only change our own lives and our own wellness, we can also create a new culture for our children – one that builds them up and doesn’t strip them bare. Two of the most powerful words in your vocabulary are -“I AM”. What you put with these two words shapes your reality. I hope that tomorrow morning, when you open your eyes and begin your day, you will say and feel with all of your heart “ I am strong, I am worthy, I am beautiful and today I choose to be exactly who I am”
