10 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY (2001 - 2011) VOLUME 11 NO. 8 FREE GMA TO GO ON HAPPY 70TH STRIKE BIRTHDAY! The threat by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to embark on strike by the 8th of next month if they are not migrated onto the Single Spine Salary Structure is most unfortunate given the fact that their arsenals are focused on colleagues in the health sector, nurses and physician assistants. In a statement issued in Accra, the President of the GMA, Dr. Adom Winful accused the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission of overtly favouring the nursing and physician assistant groups to the detriment of doctors. The Ghana Registered Nurses Association has however called the bluff of the doctors and urged the Commission to go ahead with the migration of health sector workers with or without the doctors. Indeed the refusal of the doctors' group to join the other health sector associations to reach a consensus for a smooth migration, smacks of mischief. Nobody can blame the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission for delaying the migration of health sector workers, since it is obvious the problem is self Cont’d on page 8

Minister Insults TV Presenter

Kobby Acheampong was a resident of the Washington Metro Area till 2008. Wednesday’s edition of Metro’s TV ‘Good Morning Ghana’ was marred by yet another unruly behavior displayed by the deputy Minister for the Interior, Kobby Acheampong, who was a guest on the live show. Mr Acheampong apparently lost his self control, and went for the jugular of the host, Shamima Muslim, attacking her personality. The deputy Minister accused her of being influenced by some unknown paymasters.

He refused to respect her capacity as moderator of the show and rather accused her of playing tricks on the show when she insisted Kobby should stick to the subject under discussion and stop discussing other things that had not been raised for analysis. The deputy Minister was captured on the live programme throwing his hands around in anger and virtually pushing his fingers directly into the face of Shamima as he refused to allow her to play her role as host. “I understand the way you operate, I understand the way you operate very well and I won’t fall for that. I will not fall for your trick. You can ask your question but I will not fall for it,” Kobby charged on Shamima and basically refused to let her take control of the programme as he was asked to respond to a challenge thrown by Sammy Awuku that the NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings and President Atta Mills were not on speaking terms. HEALTH WATCH Anger Management Tips

UK Professor Richard Nelson-Jones devised a method of managing anger in situations that cause anger, stress and frustration that includes the following steps of anger management – Confront Understand Define Search Agree Implement Review By first confronting or facing a problem you try and see how it makes you feel. Understand that it is the situation rather than a person that makes you feel this way; this helps you get another perspective on the situation. Define exactly what the problem is, in terms of points of disagreement between you and other person. Then look for a constructive solution that works even if it seems impractical to begin with. You then agree and go on to implement the solution, which involves concessions to be made on both sides and the arrival at a compromise. If this solution works, then it is worth reviewing for further implementation as well. Practical tips for anger management Venting of anger by shouting or violent behavior will only make you feel awful later. Pent up anger can be as undesirable, so try and find ways to let off the steam in a reasonable and civil manner. Burn off excess energy by playing a vigorous sport. Get some alone time to try and relax and get a grip of your emotions. If this doesn’t work, pick a sound proof room to yell and shout and even cry if that makes you feel better. Punch a pillow or use a punching bag to release your frustrations. Go for a sprint or a bike ride. Learn to be empathetic This may seem difficult or even impossible when faced with a person who is the source of one’s anger, but you can stop for a bit and just try and understand the other person’s point of view, this could be very useful. A lot of anger can dissipate when one is able to understand why the other person is saying what they are and behaving the way they are. Though this is a difficult process to learn, once you do master it, it can be a great help in anger management.

“You cannot now tell me what questions to ask. You are free not to answer…what do you mean by you understand the way I operate? What do you mean by that? How do I operate? I ask you questions that you find uncomfortable? What tricks are you talking about? That if I have a question I cannot ask? You are free not to answer the question and that is Kobby Acheampong for you. Ah! I am not amused at all but anyway,” Shamima retorted. The deputy Minister’s behavior and refusal to let Shamima play her role led to an abrupt end to the programme and Daily Guide’s sources at the television station said Kobby continued to rain insults on her even after the show had been taken off air. The sources said the altercation continued even to the car park of Metro TV, drawing the attention of a small crowd to watch the drama of a deputy Minister insulting a female television host in public. Kobby was said to have bragged openly that he knew Shamima’s “pay masters” and also described her as a “stupid girl” who “jumps from one place to another” and an ‘aboa’, as he walked to his car. He was also reported to have accused

Shamima of receiving a text on the show from the so-called paymasters. Shamima was reported to have asked the deputy Minister to explain what he meant by her jumping from one place to another. The lady, in retaliation, insinuated that she was not a homosexual like the deputy minister. “Kwasea, homo like you!” Shamima was said to have said. This is not the first time Kobby Acheampong has been accused of being a homosexual by a female. In 2008, he appeared on the ‘Good Morning Ghana’ programme, together with Frances Assiam of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on the same station and engaged her in a brawl characterized by sexually explicit language to the extent that the host of the show then, Yaro Kasambata, currently with the NPA, could not moderate anymore and the programme had to be abruptly taken off air. Mr. Acheampong, during the show, was reported to have referred to Ms. Assiam as a prostitute who enjoyed having sex with small boys. In response, Ms. Assiam was alleged to have told Mr. Acheampong that if she was a prostitute and enjoyed sex with small boys, then he had also been engaging in sex with ex-President Rawlings, founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Editorial Hip-hip Hooora...almost there! As each day draws nearer to November 19th, we’re more excited and reflective about being in the newspaper business for a decade. Some of the ladies featured in the maiden issues in 2001 for the Beauty of the Month are now mothers pushing on becoming grand mother status. O how time flies when you’re having fun! The spotlights on numerous young professionals back then reminds us how much we’ve grown and very much like these seasoned adults in the community, how far we have come. The New Ghanaian newspaper was launched at the Ghana Embassy, Washington DC, in November 2001 with the purpose of serving, uplifting and inspiring Ghanaians abroad. Since its inception, the paper has expanded to reach Ghanaians in the Washington Metro area and beyond. Joseph “Sonny” Vanderpuye, the publisher since its inception till now, has numerous stories to share about the challenges, pitfalls and eventual triumphs of being in the newspaper business. Partnerships, business transactions and commitments that elevated the paper and some that proved to be an obstacles in themselves all lead to the refining growth and prosperity of The New Ghanaian. Rev. Kwesi Gyimah of the Church of The Living God gave the opening prayer in November 2001 and we’re blessed in looking forward to his presence on November 19th, 2010 at the Springfield Hilton for the banquet and awards night. We’ve began plans in earnest for the joyous occasion but it is also a time to reflect, dust ourselves off and plough forward with stronger conviction and determination that our God who has been faithful will see us through to even more prosperous years ahead. The New Ghanaian has grown from a monthly newspaper to a media house that also produces content for Sunlight Radio America and we look to expand and eventually be information sharers regardless of the medium; through print, through radio online, through the world wide web (www.mytngonline.com) and through community activism partnerships across the board. We want you to not only join us the night of November 19th, but we are collecting feedback on comments, favorite memories or articles you enjoyed reading in The New Ghanaian newspaper over the course of the past 10 years. And we entreat you to challenges us to serve you better. Your continued support and readership has been the motivating factor in keeping this outfit alive, regardless of the harsh economic climate and the diminishing returns in print media in the United Sates. Kindly email tngeditor@gmail.com with the headline TNG @ 10 and we’ll be more than happy to publish your contributions in the editorial space of next month’s issue!

The issue put up for analysis yesterday was on a DAILY GUIDE story which credited another newspaper, Al-Hajj, over reports that there was a frosty relationship between Jerry Rawlings and President Atta Mills and so the former was contemplating fraternizing with the NPP. On the show, Sammy Awuku, who represented the NPP, said the report was credible and added that he had reliable reports that President Mills had neither called nor even had any meeting with Rawlings after the NDC Sunyani Congress. According to Mr Awuku, it would be in the NDC’s interest to stop demonizing Rawlings and rather make peace with him. When it was Kobby’s turn to comment on the story, he said DAILY GUIDE’s report could not have been credible because the paper quoted another media house. He then went straight for the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of drugrelated charges. Shamima Muslim’s attempt to get Kobby to stick to the issue on the table, was what angered him and sent him running riot on the live show.

both parties to continue their good works and most, not to hesitate to contact the Embassy for assistance when the need arises. His Excellency, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, also spoke on numerous issues but stressed on cultural diversity, which must be important to every Ghanaian living in the diaspora, in maintaining our cultures in our homes and be good cultural ambassadors for our nation, Ghana. He told delegates about how the government back home is trying hard to use the new discoveries of the oil and natural gas to better the lives of the people of Ghana. There was an open discussion forum in which delegates had the opportunity to ask questions and others raised concerns to the Ambassador at the end of length deliberations. Mrs. Emelia Marfo Sarbeng, on behalf of both associations

thanked the Ambassador and his staff for hosting them and presented a plaque to H. E. inflicted. What the doctors are refusing to acknowledge is that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is made up of astute professionals well versed in Salary administration. It is pathetic the way the health sector is divided as to who takes what as far as levels on the Single Spine are pegged. A house divided against itself, our elders say cannot stand. This reminds us of the Akan totem which depicts two crocodiles with a stomach yet each struggling to go its way to fend for itself. If two elephants fight it is surely the grass that suffers. How does the Ghana Medical Association expect the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to immediately migrate health sector employees onto the Single Spine when the Association has rejected the formula for computing the market. Premium Nurses and Physician assistants complement the effort of

doctors in catering for the sick. Can we imagine what the hospitals would be like for doctors to work without nurses and vice versa? Indeed the two professional bodies, doctors and nurses are important in the health delivery chain and it will be suicidal for one to look down on the other. It is unfortunate the way doctors take advantage of the sensitive nature of their jobs to hold the nation to ransom at the least provocation. This time round we believe they have not been provoked but only want to be diabolical. Flexing of muscles will definitely take the GMA nowhere. Government must be proactive this time and go to court to stop the GMA in its track, after all, they have not gone through processes required to declare a strike. Fair Wages Commission must go ahead and give the Nurses and Physician Assistant group what in their right frame Cont’d on page 23

Responding to God’s Call

‘For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. 2After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage,* he sent them into his vineyard. 3When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place; 4and he said to them, “You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.” So they went. 5When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. 6And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, “Why are you standing here idle all day?” 7They said to him, “Because no one has hired us.” He said to them, “You also go into the vineyard.” 8When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, “Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.” 9When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.* 10Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage.* 11And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12saying, “These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.” 13But he replied to one of them, “Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?* 14Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?”* 16So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” [Matthew 20:1-16]* In today’s lesson from Matthew, Jesus shifts the focus, from the order in which one will inherit the kingdom of heaven, and challenges us to have the courage to hear and respond to God’s call to come into the kingdom. In the parable, God [the landowner], calls each and every one of us, into God’s world [the vineyard]. God calls us, not to be passive observers or bystanders, but rather as active agents of transformation in a world which so desperately needs to hear the transforming nature of God’s amazing grace. God’s grace as we hear in today’s gospel lesson, is one which confronts and even offends our consciences. To the common observer, either the landowner is an awful businessman, or he doesn’t seem to understand the concept of equal wages for equal work. C a n yo u i m a g i n e s u c h principle working in our world? Surely all of us would want to sleep in late and show up for work a couple of hours before closing, if we knew we would be paid for the entire day. The landowner’s action upsets the whole arrangement of society, and so the early laborers grumble justifiably at the owner’s unconventional

generosity to those who showed up later in the day. But divine grace, my friends, does not rest on the merit system. Without a doubt, those who consider themselves insiders; the “good” followers of Jesus, are bound to grumble. We begin to wonder if grace doesn’t undermine the whole system for being good, observing standards and following all the rules. Perhaps if the late comers had been delayed for a legitimate reason such as; their truck broke down, we would be more sympathetic. But the landowner’s action isn’t just a generous gesture to an unfortunate few. Rather it forces us to look at God in an entirely different light. Our perspective on God’s radical love and abundant grace is gravely altered by his treatment of the latecomers. In this parable, Jesus is admonishing his disciples to get their priorities straight. As those who see themselves as the privileged few who enjoyed that special place with Jesus, they are reminded that they may have to make way for those who come to know Jesus and receive the gospel at a later time. This will surely raise a jealous passion within them, for even these

“latecomers” will be “made equal” to them. There is a story about a man named Nyamekye, a wealthy local farmer in a small village in Central Ghana. He was known in the entire village for his notorious wickedness. He was so bad that people would have nothing to do with him; except those who, due to necessity, would come to borrow money from him. Shortly after his eightieth birthday, Nyamekye fell ill and was taken to the hospital. At the hospital, he was told that he was dying of a terminal illness and had only one month to live. He requested to be discharged from the hospital, to his own bed in his own home. When he arrived home, he sent his youngest son to go and call all the villagers he had offended, whether intentionally or unintentionally, including even those, unawares to him, who had any claim against him. He also asked for all his debtors. Over a period of three weeks, Nyamekye apologized to all the people he had offended or who had grievances against him, and asked for their forgiveness. He also forgave the debts of all those who had borrowed large amounts of money from him, and only asked from them that

whenever any of his children and grandchildren were in need, they will be taken care of. He then called his ten children who came and stood by his bedside, and asked those among them who were quarreling to bury their differences and forgive each other. They did. Then he asked them to forgive him for all the times he had been a bad parent or had failed to show them love; they did. Lastly, he sent for the local priest to come and intercede with God on his behalf and to administer the final rites. He died shortly afterwards. We will never know if Nyamekye made it to heaven. But the entire village was certain that if there was a forgiving God, this wretched soul might make it to the gates of heaven. Amazing grace! One neighbor was noted to remark under his breath (during the funeral) that life is just not fair! It seemed to him that this man should not have a chance in heaven for his previous offenses in life. My friends, Jesus stretched out his arms of love on the cross, that ALL might come within the reach of his saving embrace. And today’s lesson from Matthew is another reminder that the invitation to come into God’s

Reverend Father C. John Thompson-Quartey

kingdom still remains open to all those who will hear and respond to God’s call. The truth is, we have both the freedom and the responsibility to choose whether to work in the vineyard, or not. We may choose to hear and respond early to the call, or we may choose to hang around, just idling in the local square, but the call has been made. The invitation is before you and me. It is an open-ended call; the vineyard is always open for work, for it is this same Jesus who said the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. The truth is, in God’s kingdom, there are no firsts and there are no lasts. God, who created you and me, knows our potential more than we know ourselves. The gates to the vineyard have been flung wide open. In the vineyard, there are no firsts, and there are no lasts. All that matters is that you show up, and work. The reward is God’s to give. So come in and live up to your fullest potential. That is the least action that God expects from us. Join the laborers in the vineyard, and your life will never be the same again!

The Chainbreaker To say to the captives come out! And to those in darkness be free! As Christians, we sometimes tend to believe that we are immune to some of the challenges that others face due to our close relationship with God. Unfortunately life is such that whether we draw closer or not, are saved or unsaved, young or old we go through challenges that either bring salvation to us, make us stronger in our faith, or become vessels of influence to others through Christ Jesus. Let us visit the book of Acts chapter12 versus 1-19: this passage is about the miraculous release of Peter after his arrest by Herod. The Christians in

the early church were going through their own challenges. James the brother of John had been beheaded. The two disciples (James and John), sons of Zebedee popularly known as the “sons of thunder”, were known for their boldness; they had great zeal. The beheading of James had shaken the entire Christian community, he was the first apostle to die in the faith. Peter too had been arrested. They did not know what was to happen next. Peter had been confined in prison waiting to be presented to the people for trial. Unlike James, Peter’s trial had delayed due to the celebration of the Feast of Unleavened Bread - a seven day

observance. During this feast, leavened bread was not eaten or allowed in their territory for seven days. Leaven is symbolic of sin. Herod’s approval rating was high because of his decision to behead James and King Herod had gotten power drunk. He had to be strategic. The feast of passover was not a good time execute his plans, he did not need all that drama with all the crowds of pilgrims in town for the celebration; it had to be a peaceful Passover without hindrances. His support on this was with the Jews, and after the Passover he would gain their full attention - the timing would be politically right for him. When we find ourselves in a

place of delay it does not mean God has denied us. He is working things together to deliver or restore us at the right time. His timing is always perfect. Whatever the enemy means for evil God will turn it round for the good of his glory! Peter was under heavy security. There is nothing more frustrating than being chained in a place of confinement. Some of us have our mind, spirit, and body already in chains. Limitations have been placed on us, we carry heavy burdens. We have been bound in chains of depression, poverty, sickness, emotional challenges Cont’d on page 13

Installation and Ordination of the Aboagyes

On Sunday, September 25, 2011, Pastor Bennet and Pastor Gina Aboagye were installed and ordained by Bishop Leslie Patterson, Jr., Senior Pastor of First Baptist of Sterling, VA. at the Ferlazzo Building in Woodbridge, VA. BENNET ABOAGYE is the General Overseer of Renew Life Worship Center located in Woodbridge, Virginia. and spiritual death but I have good news for you, this is the day of liberation for the truth is being unleashed to you today. When every other gate is shut or locked the gate of heaven is wide open- Jesus is the chain breaker! We need to have assurance in God like Peter did. Peter slept well during his ordeal. Even though he was physically bound in chains he was not perplexed, neither was he moved. He knew the Chainbreaker! We need to know and trust the Lord especially in difficult times. Fretting, arguing our case, self pity or playing the blame game will certainly not help us. In the midst of all this confusion, the church pulled themselves together and prayed. Bible quotes ‘the church prayed without ceasing’ which I believe would mean all night prayer. The key used to activate the move of the Chainbreaker is prayer. Any time saints pray in unison there is confusion in hell. Whatever we loose on earth we loose in heaven. Whilst effective prayers were being said by the saints, the heavens literally opened and the an angel was dispatched to break the chains off Peter’s hands! The difference between what happened in James’ death and Peter’s liberation was prayer. This is what I call the mighty power of intercession. May God break of the shackles that have locked you up in every area of your life. Peter thought he had seen a vision, but when Peter came to himself he was standing out of the prison yard. Psalms 126v1 “When the Lord made a change in Zion’s fate we were like men in a dream’. When the Chainbreaker suddenly comes to your rescue and break the chains off, it would be like a dream for you. But before that happens we need to be like Peter and rise up from that sleep. ‘The rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the righteous’. We need to rise and take a stand in prayer and allow the Holy Spirit to take charge of the situation. If you do not consume the situation you find yourself in, the situation will consume you. Don’t just sit there somebody, rise up, stand up and do something, pray! Or better still get prayer support. “Awake sleeper, rise from the dead and Christ will shine upon you” Ephesians 5:4. When this miracle happened even the praying saints could not believe what God had done. Effectual prayer with little faith even as small as a mustard seed can yield great accomplishments. Do you remember Jesus and the demon possessed man? In Mark chapter 5, The spiritually bound would break off chains tied to him and inflict himself with stones,he was totally out of control, he was literally freaking out. Before the Chainbreaker liberates him, he asks the man his name and he answers Legion. Did Jesus not know his name? Of course he did. He is omnipotent, he is all knowing yet he needed the man himself to make a confession. Legion meant this man was infested with a group of demons. These demons were exceedingly fierce . He confessed and he was loosed. Regardless of whom we are, Peter or the demon possessed man God can deliver us from bondage. For if you are spiritually bound, even those chains will fall of in His presence for in His presence there is liberation. Sometimes we find it difficult that such divine interventions not only happen in the Book of Acts, but it is still happening in this dispensation. I have heard Christians question the gifts of healing being exercised today, sadly enough they do not believe. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever. He chooses to heal and deliver whom he chooses to heal and deliver. I recently read about a man named Sundar Singh, born in Rampur, India preached the gospel in Nepal in 1914 a country strong in Buddhism. He was sentenced to death three times by the Lama for spreading “false” religion, and was dropped in a well where he found the skeletons of his predecessors. But a few days later, a man crept by the well at night and unlocked the lid of the well, threw a rope down and pulled Sundar out. When Sundar got out he found no one. He went back stood at the same spot and proclaimed the gospel. For the second time, Sundar was arrested and thrown back into the well. The strange man went back and let him out and once again disappeared. Sundar went back Cont’d on page 20

Cedi Notes Carry Bacteria Source: Daily Graphic

Ghana

A study conducted by two Ghanaian scientists has revealed that 98.6 per cent of Ghanaian cedi notes are contaminated with bacteria. According to the study, which was conducted between November 2008 and February 2009, some of the cedi notes were contaminated with pathogenic micro-organisms which could spread diseases. The study established that one-cedi notes were the most contaminated, followed by the five-cedi notes and the 10-cedi notes. The study was conducted by Mr Patrick Feglo and Mr Michael Nkansah of the Department of Clinical Microbiology of the School of Medical Sciences and the Department of Medical Laboratory Technology of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, respectively, both of the College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Their findings are published in the African Jour nal of Microbiology Research Vol. 4(22) pp. 2375-2380, November 18, 2010 and can be accessed online at http://www.academicjournals. org/ajmr The study revealed that some of the bacteria had the potency to cause tuberculosis, leprosy and buruli ulcer, as well as food poisoning, minor skin infections and severe life-threatening infections, depending on the mycobacterium species. “ Pat h o ge n i c m i c r o organisms that may survive on the Ghanaian currency notes

may serve as a potential source of enteropathogens causing food poisoning because in Ghana food vendors serve food with the hands and at the same time handle currency notes as they sell,” it noted. After the laboratory analyses of 70 cedi notes of various denominations, 112 different bacteria were isolated from 69 currency notes, representing a contamination percentage of 98.57. “One of the currency notes wh i c h ap p e a r e d n e w a n d ‘seemingly clean’ did not grow any bacterium,” the study revealed. The staggering revelations of the study mean that people who handle cedi notes but do not have the habit of washing their hands before eating stand a high risk of getting infected with various kinds of diseases. Many Ghanaians do not have the habit of washing their hands before eating, a practice that has moved health authorities to embark on an annual hand-washing campaign and awareness creation of the essence of washing hands before eating and after visiting the wash room.

The researchers observed that Ghanaian currency notes were handled by all manner of people, including food vendors who served food and handled currency notes at the same time, making the notes dirty and cross-contaminated. The study, therefore, sought to determine bacterial species and the level of contamination of the cedi notes in circulation. In that regard, the researchers collected cedi notes at random from food vendors in Kumasi for the scientific investigation. It involved the collection of cedi notes at random from ready-to-eat food sellers on the KNUST campus. It was an observational cross-sectional study involving 70 currency notes collected at random. The currency notes studied were 30 one-cedi notes, 30 five-cedi notes and 10 of the 10-cedi notes. Each currency note was collected directly into a sterile plastic bag and transported to the Diagnostic Laboratory of the Department of Microbiology, KNUST, soon after collection and examined for bacterial contamination.

Ghana And Uk To Exchange Prisoners Mr Damain Green, United Kingdom (UK) Minister for Immigration, on Wednesday announced that his Government would transfer 80 Ghanaians who have finished serving their jail terms in that country to Ghana as part of a prisonerswap arrangement. T h e U K M i n i s t e r, accompanied by Mr Peter Jones, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, said he had already had discussions on the issue with the Ghanaian Interior Minister on how to implement the programme. Mr Green made the announcement when he paid a courtesy call on Mr Ebo Barton Odro, Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General in Accra. The meeting discussion centered on issues of mutual benefits and co-operation between Ghana and the UK. Mr Green said the UK

government was pursuing a similar arrangement with other countries in Africa including Nigeria and that the exchange programme would be beneficial in the sense that former prisoners would be able to integrate successful into the society. Mr Peter Jones, however, called for some amendment in the Prison Act of 2007 to allow for the exchange of the prisoners. He urged the Ghanaian authorities to continue to pursue the case involving five cocaine suspects, who were recently discharged by the Circuit Court for want of prosecution. He said the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) of the UK was still working on the matter to ensure that justice was done to the suspects, who were arrested in the UK, as well as their counterparts in Ghana. Mr Jones also solicited for

the support of the Ghanaian government to help to track the killers of a British national, one John Welsh, who was murdered sometime ago. He assured Ghana of the UK Government’s support in terms of logistics and personnel to ensure that the prisoner exchange programme and other requests from them were carried out successfully. Mrs Merley Wood, Acting Director of Prosecution, Ministry of Justice and Attorney General gave the assurance that her outfit would work to ensure that the prisoner-swap and the other tasks were implemented for the mutual benefit of the two nations. Mr Ebo Barton Odro, Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General commended the UK government for its continuous support to the Ministry over Cont’d on page 30

Ivory Coast Launches Reconciliation Process by THE ASSOCIATED PRESS YAMOUSSOUKRO, Ivory Coast (AP) — Ivory Coast's new government and dignitaries from the West Africa region on Wednesday launched a South African-style Truth and Reconciliation Commission that aims to find peace after months of postelection violence rocked the country. The 11-member commission is headed by former Prime Minister Charles Konan Banny and includes the nation's favorite son, Chelsea soccer star Didier Drogba, as well as religious leaders from throughout the West African nation. At least 3,000 people were killed from December to April, when United Nations airstrikes finally forced the country's entrenched r uler Laurent Gbagbo to cede power to President Alassane Ouattara. The commission, styled after the effort in South Africa which helped repair the wounds of apartheid, is expected to hear grievances from the families of people killed by Gbagbo's military. Rights groups have u r ge d t h e gove r n m e n t t o ensure that it will equally hear testimony about those killed by the rebel fighters Ouattara enlisted to help him take power.

It remains unclear how the commission will be involved in the judicial process. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who headed that countr y's Tr uth and Reconciliation Commission after the end of apartheid, said Tuesday that reconciliation and justice are intertwined, and that "victor's justice" would "greatly undermine the reconciliation process." "We encourage President Ouattara to demonstrate to his people and the world that the judicial process he has started is both fair and completely impartial," Tutu said. Since Gbagbo's arrest in April, dozens of his supporters have been charged with crimes, but no Ouattara supporters have faced charges. However, both sides are accused of carrying out gross human rights violations during the crisis. "We have the impression right now that there is victor's justice," said law student Frank Kouassi, 26, who said he didn't vote in the last elections. "It was a war. It wasn't just one side that pulled the trigger." Kouassi said he doesn't think the commission's role is to say who should be prosecuted.

He said "there is a fracture in so ciety," a nd that the commission may help if they "go door to door, talk with people," and teach them to be tolerant of different beliefs. Ivory Coast, once one of the most prosperous nations in Africa, was brought to its knees by a decade of conflict which started with a 1999 coup, followed by the flawed 2000 election which first brought Gbagbo to power. He failed to hold elections five years later. Then when another five years was up last November, he refused to accept his electoral defeat, setting off a five-month-long crisis that turned the once-chic commercial capital of Abidjan into a war zone. For the first four months of the standoff, the victims were overwhelmingly Ouattara supporters, whose neighborhoods were shelled by the pro-Gbagbo ar my. That changed in March when Ouattara finally accepted the help of a former rebel group. The fighters swept across the country, torching pro-Gbagbo villages, gang raping their women and executing suspected supporters of the former president.

US to guard oil shipments around Ghana, other countries as pirate attacks on West African coastlines surge As more oil discoveries are being made in the West African sub-region, activities of pirates are said to be springing up in the region from its usual area, the Red Sea of the coast of Somalia. The coastlines of West Africa have for some time now been seeing attacks from pirates on ships and vessels carrying oil as well as goods. I n Au g u s t t h i s y e a r, the International Maritime B u r e a u ( I M B ) l i s t e d f ive African countries’ sea-shore as piracy prone areas in its latest Piracy Prone Areas and Warnings report. The countries are Nigeria, Benin, Guinea, Cameroon and Somalia. The IMB said the areas are risky for the movement of vessels and ships including oil and chemical tankers due to attacks from pirates who are using weapons and rocket propelled grenade launchers. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) in an article titled “West Africa: Another target for piracy?” published on its website and culled by ghanabusinessnews.

com September 27, 2011 says with massive reserves of oil, cocoa and metals needed to supply hungry world markets, the Gulf of Guinea – a stretch of West Africa’s coast spanning more than a dozen countries – is witnessing early signs that pirates may be keen to pounce on new and lucrative opportunities. “Piracy, drug smuggling and political uncertainty have made the Gulf of Guinea a challenging environment for investors seeking to benefit from natural resources.” However, the US government has pledged its full support in helping to fight piracy along the coast lines in the region. A s s i s t a n t S e c r e t a r y, Bureau of African Affairs, US De par tment of State, Ambassador Johnnie Carson told ghanabusinessnews.com that the Obama administration is working with ECOWAS to fight these pirates. M r. C a r s o n , w h o w a s answering questions from some selected media in the world on September 28, 2011 via a live video streaming said the US

government has noticed the situation and “we have regular navy ships and boats visit West and East of Africa.” The media interaction was on the outcome of the 66th UN General Assembly and US Africa Policy. Ghanabusinessnews.com, the Daily Graphic and Net 2 TV took part at the US Embassy in Accra. “We are also working with some West African countries to provide them with boats to strengthen their coastal guides,” said Mr. Carson when ghanabusinessnews.com asked him about the issue of piracy in West Africa particularly Ghana since it has started oil production and is exporting using similar coastal routes where pirate activities are said to be increasing. Already a US Navy vessel, the HSV Swift, visited Ghana in August to train 30 Ghanaian Naval officers to strengthen the maritime capabilities of the Naval Forces towards enhancing maritime security. of mind they believe will appropriately compensate the various groups for their labour because as the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission makes us believe, the various grade structures were intensively discussed with the management of the health sector to clear any perceived distortions. Government has pampered the doctors, for far too long and it is about time it put its foot on the ground to be

decisive. We are aware most doctors do other jobs beside their official schedules to boost their income. Some of them even go to the extent of referring patients to their private hospitals yet how many nurses do we see doing that. It is about time we called a spade a spade. Since the Single Spine pay policy started in July last year the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has established its competence and acted above reproach. So far about 45 organizations representing

79 percent of Public Service employees have been successfully migrated onto the Single Spine without much problem. It is imperative that the GMA lowers it ego and dialogues with the Fair Wages Commission instead of resorting to threats of strikes for life is more precious than money. It is not good for the GMA to try to short change colleague health sector workers. Fair Wages evaluates workers based on the job they do and not their professional image. Refusal by

the Ghana Medical Association to sit at the negotiating table with other health sector workers has cost them dearly. They must therefore not blame anybody but themselves for the situation they find themselves in now. Ghanaians are tired of the unprovoked strikes and their attendant loss of lives. The GMA must therefore conform before it becomes irrelevant. BY: JUSTICE MINGLE

He said it felt good to be back on the scene after observing the industry from the lecture room. “It’s been all fun,” he said. “During our time, you know it wasn’t commercializ ed. We were doing it for the love and education of it. But now it is a different ball game. Now it is business and I find it very challenging. But it is ok for me and I am ready now,” he added. “I have been a lecturer at the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana and acting is my passion and therefore when I am given a script, I have to do analysis and interpret the role so that I come out convincingly. Not that I want to show my handsome face, no and therefore you find some…there are a lot of talents in the industry now. No doubt about that but they need some training so that they can get their acts right. You go on set and then they do some many retakes because the other partner is not

giving it to you. Those are the challenges I am talking about,” he emphasized. William Addo, who has appeared in a number of Ghanaian movies, started acting from stage. He studied at the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts where he was retained as a teaching assistant at the school after he graduated. Subsequently, he had a scholarship to do his masters abroad and came back as a lecturer in charge of acting at the university. Later on, he was released to the National Theatre where he handled concer t par ty productions and managed to elevate the image and name of concert party. From National Theatre, he was transferred to the Volta Region as the regional director, Centre for National Culture. The 61-year-old did a lot of stage production alongside movies but he can’t remember the titles of most of his movies. He said the industry had come a long way, wishing that besides commercializing the industry, players would also not forget the educational values of the movies.

FASHION Blankets, scarf ’s, jac kets and everything else that is a warmer should be out and in the closet. The fall season is here live and in living color, LOL. It is always hard to tear away from your favorite summer attire when the weather starts to turn crisp. Thankfully designers agree that a warm-weather wardrobe stunner shouldn’t be confined to one season anymore. There's no need to sacrifice on style especially in these down economic times. Incorporating summer pieces into this fall’s wardrobe should be exciting and creative since the approach is about mixing those between-season pieces. Peplum coats, jackets and vests are hot this fall. Some of fall’s prettiest sweaters, puffer jackets and blazers come with whittled-in-at-the-waist silhouettes— which means you can flaunt your ladylike

aren’t afraid to change up tradition, so if you are one then don’t listen to those old style rules that tell you not to wear white after Labor Day. This season, white outfits are trendy. Slip dresses, not my favorite though, are also on the trend list, and of course you can also make the slip dress work for daytime too if you're interested in this sort of truly effortless dressing. A few frock options as well as short and long hemlines have made waves on the runways.

FASHION KOTI My ladies, I know you are definitely going to cover up outside in public because the weather is cold. Can you afford not to anyway, ha ha ha ha, but my goodness can you be polite and decent enough to wear something not as revealing when you take off the jacket with slip dresses trending right now. Don’t make the mistake to think you are in the confines of your house because you will be the subject of “Onipa en se whe” gossip! Reporting for duty! Eddie Ekuban

silhouette even if you’re wearing lots of layers. The Slit-up-to-There skirt is a hot ticket item if you like to stay covered up while you dress up. Fall’s sexiest new party outfit involves a long-sleeve top, a neckline of your choosing and a long skirt—with a sexy slit up the front so you can walk easily and flaunt your sexy legs. Wild prints and patterns is on the fashion radar and its one of those that speaks to your personal style so ladies have fun with the ensembles only don’t be an Erika Kitt aka‘the cat lady’, LOL. Ladies don’t shy away from out-ofthe-ordinary colors. Bright hues take some of the seriousness out of these vintage-inspired outfits and as such can give you an edgier look. Fashionistas

the US military cooperation programme called Africa Partnership Station. The US has also become increasingly reliant on oil and gas exports from West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea itself. According to an 80-page report, published by the Washington-based Atlantic Council and cited by the Inter Press Service (IPS) Africa publication in December 2010, 18% of US oil imports

and 14% of its natural gas (LNG) imports currently originate in West Africa. That percentage, the publication said is expected to rise to 25% by 2015. Mr. Carson notes that these pirates are now around the Niger Delta, Togo and Benin and further to the Red Sea of the coast of Somalia. Meanwhile, ECOWAS has called for action against piracy after governments along the length of the West African coastline have expressed concern about a surge in the number of attacks on cargo
