Editor’s Note Dear Readers, this edition of The New Ghanaian is dedicated to the memory of our late President John Atta Mills. We have a lot of never seen pictures of his three day funeral galore in Ghana and tributes. Enjoy reading The New Ghanaian.
SPEECH BY NANA EWUSI KWANSAH XIII OF OTUAM ON THE OCCASION OF THE INTERNMENT OF PROF. JOHN EVANS ATTA MILLS, THE 3RD PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA Your Excellency, President John Mahama, Your Excellency Vice President, Kwesi Amissah Arthur, Members of Council of State, Honorable Members of Parliament, Ministers of State Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Nananum, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, All Protocols observed. It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart I stand here on behalf of the Otuam Traditional Council, the family, the good people of Otuam and on my own behalf, to pay tribute to our departed son, who was our pride and treasure. With our eyes blurred by tears and our senses frayed by grief, we will forever reminiscence and cherish the immense stride God in His sovereignty, enabled our son to take in life; for which we are grateful. Eulogy after eulogy speaks volumes of this humble yet illustrious man, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills. As a teacher, he taught with a good conscience and a sincere heart; and as a statesman, he served like a selfless servant, extremely kind to a fault. Confident in his heart he was working up to God and not to man, Prof worked hard till his last breath, loyal to his oath of service to Ghana. Any time we see success anywhere we must be quick to reckon there has been a sacrifice. This is the credentials of our late President, a great son of Otuam; a man of wisdom and compassion determined to make a positive difference in all he found himself doing, the best of Statesmen a nation can ever wish for; alas, today he is no more, yet he lives in our hearts. Your Excellencies, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, We want to revere him as a tangible image of peace and forbearance in this nation and the continent of Africa. As the Good Book states, there is hope for a tree even when it is cut off and the roots remain deep in the soil, it will sprout again if the roots scent water,( Job 14:7). The roots of our son will never die off; for Otuam with the help of God will water them to factor into the youth of all ages. We will forever celebrate his contribution to our nation by a lasting memorial in his name. To this end, I Nana Ewusi Kwansah XIII on behalf of the Oman of Otuam and the family hereby pledge to bless Otuam with its first ever High School which is to be named after our beloved son, Prof. Atta Mills. This is our memorial in his honor for posterity and a promise of sound education and scholarly future for the youth of Otuam. “The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interned with their bones”, this is a statement by the renowned writer, William Shakespeare. This saying when used as a gauge on several departed lives seems so true. Nonetheless it is not the same with Professor Atta Mills; for his good deeds overshadows all else in his life. Your Excellencies, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, His service to God and this generation epitomized selflessness and integrityqualities which cannot be interned with his mortal remains nor equated with many of this generation. He will live on in our memories and in our lives; for he has impacted this present age. Prof, it is not into our ears you whispered words of love, but into our hearts. It was not our bodies you touched and kissed with acts of affection, but our souls; indeed, you have touched the heart of God. You will forever go down in the history of Ghana and the world as a man worthy of emulation. On behalf of the Otuam Traditional Council, the family, the good people of Otuam and on my own behalf, Ye ma wo Due! Oman Panyin pa, Due! Due! Damirifa Due! May your soul rest peacefully in the Arms of God, your maker.
Ghanaians Didn’t Understand President Mills – Sarkodie BET Awards 2 012 “Best International Act” winner Sarkodie has stated that late President of Ghana, Prof. Atta Mills was using a technique that had never been used
in gover nance in our political history to rule Ghana, so he was criticized because Ghanaians didn’t understand his style. S a r k o d i e r eve a l e d this in his first live radio interview in Ghana, after he won the BET Award with Chairman General Kwami Sefa Kayi, on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show. The “Baby” rapper,
who was paying tribute to the late President, said he was on tour in Toronto Canada when news of President Mills’ death broke, and it was a very big blow to him. Even though he said he doesn’t follow politics in Ghana, he thinks Ghanaians did not understand Atta Mills and what he wanted to do as he Sarkodie watched from afar.
Tribute to John Atta Mills By President Jonathan, Nigeria Late President John Evans Atta Mills was a true leader of his people and a most worthy son of Africa. The people of Nigeria and I received the news of his death with shock and sadness. He was my very good friend and colleague. He was also a friend to many Nigerians who knew him personally and enjoyed the privilege of interacting with him. His death is a huge loss to the good people of Ghana whom he served diligently and wholeheartedly and to whose good causes he was faithfully devoted in every situation in which he found himself. Nigerians and all Africans share your feeling of immense loss. Late President Mills was a great friend of our country and a firm believer in the shared heritage and common destiny of all Africans. President Mills and I shared a vision of peace and political stability as well as regional and continental economic integration in pursuit of progress and development, in our individual countries, within the sub-region and in Africa as a whole. He was a dependable l e a d e r, a n a f f a b l e gentleman, soft-spoken but firm, a self-assured man of honour, and of intellect, who loved his country, his continent, his race, and who served humanity with all his heart. John was the definition of tenacity and charity. He displayed tenacity by running for the Presidency of Ghana on three occasions and even when he was defeated in 2000 and 2004, he was not broken and tried again. The virtue of charity was evident in his life in that despite his defeat at the polls he never harboured bitterness against his victorious opponents. Instead of getting bitter, he got better and this led to his victory at the polls in 2008. Yet he was magnanimous in victory and resisted the temptation to settle scores and had a big enough heart to accommodate everyone in his administration. There is a lesson here for all politicians. His death touched me, but I am aware that the
Nigerian people especially those domiciled in Ghana and their relations here in Nigeria remember the late president fondly for his positive intervention in the case of Nigerian investors in Ghana whose interests were accommodated after policies on expatriate i n v e s t m e n t s p r ov e d challenging for many of our countrymen. This intervention saved the businesses and livelihood of many Nigerians domiciled in Ghana and strengthened the bonds of brotherhood between our two nations. It was for me, a great pleasure, privilege and honour to have had the opportunity of working and collaborating with this good man at bilateral, regional and continental levels in furtherance of the positive aspirations of our governments and people. John and I had many things in common. He was for 25 years a teacher, as I had been, before my foray into politics. He had also been a vice-president before his ascension to the presidency as was I. But perhaps the most important thing we had in common was a strong belief in God and in the great potential of our nations. Let me paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, the famous playwright by saying that Ghana and Nigeria are two countries divided by a common language. When you mourn in Ghana, we mourn with you in Nigeria. It is not just Ghana that
has lost something with the passing of President Atta Mills. Indeed all of West Africa has lost a voice of reason. During the 2008 presidential election in Ghana, Atta Mills ran under the slogan "A Better Man for a Better Ghana". Though he did not live to see the end of his tenure, the late Atta Mills lived up to those words and bequeathed to Ghana a growing economy which looks set to grow even further and faster as a result of the increase in oil production activities which began under his tenure and is one of his legacies to Ghana. As we mourn and pay our last respects to him, we all can take solace in the knowledge that he served his country well with his God-given abilities, and in passing on, he leaves behind a worthy legacy for his family, and his compatriots. One visible and significant le gacy of late President Atta Mills and other leaders of the current political dispensation in Ghana is the stable and enduring democratic institutions of gover nance which have been established and nurtured since 1992. The stability and strength of these institutions were unmistakably apparent in the smooth and prompt transfer of presidential Cont’d on page 23

power to President John Dramani Mahama, following the death of President Atta-Mills. We applaud and recommend the exemplary efforts of President Atta Mills and his worthy predecessors, in promoting the essence of democratic leadership, to other emerging democracies on our continent. In Nigeria, we have also experienced the pain of losing a great leader while he was in office. Many of you may recall that my friend and leader, my partner in nation building, the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, died in office and I had to step up to steer the ship of state. It was a difficult period for Nigeria but with God's help and the help of people like the late President Atta Mills, Nigeria navigated the storms that arose from that loss. Coming Cont’d from 7
“ Pe r s o n a l l y f r o m afar, what I could see is that may be Ghanaians didn’t understand him and what he wanted to do, but I couldn’t speak for him. I think Mr. Mills was trying to start from scratch because a lot of things had happened and I think there are pot-holes somewhere we need to fix in our governance system. I saw that he wanted to start everything with a good heart and in the best way, and that is through God.”
from that, Nigeria can empathise with what Ghana is going through and the issues that must be going through President Mahama's mind. I say to Ghana and to President Mahama that this too will pass and Ghana will emerge stronger. Atta Mills did his very best as a leader and servant of his people. He was committed to community development, national progress, and stability. We honour him today as a great teacher, administrator and political leader who dedicated his entire life to the service of his country, Africa and humanity. T he people of the Fe d e r a l Re p u bl i c o f Nigeria join you in praying that God Almighty will grant him eternal rest from his earthly labours. We pray also that God should comfor t his family and all the people of Ghana, and g rant
his successor, President Mahama, the wisdom and courage to continue in the footsteps of his worthy predecessor and ensure that Ghana remains an exemplary beacon of good gover nance, sustained development and progress in Africa. I want to assure President Mahama and the people of Ghana of Nigeria's continued brotherly solidarity and friendship. Our two countries are linked not just by blood or region, but by culture, heritage, and traditions. We must continue to work together in the best interest of our people. May late President Atta Mills' honourable and gentle soul rest in peace. The Asomdwehene is gone, but Ghana lives! Long live the Republic of Ghana. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Long live Africa.
He said a lot of leaders do not take God serious when they get power but Atta Mills put God first in everything he did, and the only thing he needed was time. Sarkodie emphasized that President Mills was trying to make Ghanaians understand that this is the only way we can move forward. The reigning Ghana Music Awards “Artiste of the year” said, he had an ambition of standing for the high office as President of Ghana in the near future, but he has resented his dream due
to the way late President Atta Mills was criticized, mocked and lambasted in the media, while he was alive as President. “I wanted to stand for the position of a President in Ghana for people to vote for me but as I look at the pressure, I have changed my mind. I think it is hectic”. He said the pressure was too much for President Mills because being a public figure he (Sarkodie) can put himself in Mills’ shoes and imagine what he was going through. “When Cont’d on page 26

I watched the President and how his name was mentioned several times in the media I thought it hurts, with my little experience as a public person. For me, I never had the chance to meet him but from afar I didn’t see him as a President, I saw him as my father”. “Obidiponbidi” as some of his friends call him confessed that he was worried about some lyrics he used about Atta Mills in two of his songs; the Political song he released after the 2008 election and a new single titled “Issues”, in which he made certain funny comments on Atta Mills. Asked why he has not composed any song of tribute for our late President, Sarkodie said his inspiration for creating a song is very personal and it takes time. “If I rush to the studio now to do a song for Mills because everybody is doing it, I might say things I don’t really mean and just put some rhymes together. But I want to do it from my heart, and it can even take a year. If I take my time the song I release will last forever rather than do a disposable song which will only be played today and forgotten tomorrow”. He said that was why he had to round up everything he was doing outside the country to come back to Ghana and personally pay tribute to him. “That is why I came myself to
pay tribute. I am speaking to Ghanaians that this is coming from me”. Commenting on why his award was not presented to him on stage, Sarkodie stressed that he was very surprised why people were talking about that instead of celebrating something that has never happened in the history of Ghana. “I don’t think it was that much of a point for people to pay attention to that because I am the third or fourth person to win this from Africa, and nobody has been on stage so I don’t see why mine is something different”. He said he respects the organiz ers for doing that, because they are trying to educate us in Africa to cherish our own stars and put them above stars from other countries. “There is no way America will give you that space, but there have been similar situations in Ghana where I was billed to perform, but I couldn’t even get a chair to sit on at back stage, and yet somebody from outside gets that space in Ghana”. The fastest rapper said America is America because they don’t allow people into it just like that. So any little change they give any foreign star, they feel they are doing you a favour. Sarkodie won the “Best International Act-Africa” at the 2012 BET award as a shared award winner with Nigerian sensation Wizkid.
Mills saved Ghana from Chaos – Rev. Boamah Reverend Yaw Boamah, President of the Legon Interdenominational Church on Wednesday described late President John Evans Atta Mills as a courageous and peaceful man. He said the late president Mills saved the nation from chaos by conceding to former president Mr. J. A. Kufuor in the 2000 elections even against opposition from his own party. Rev. Boamah said this is one thing many people seem to forget about late President Mills when they reflect on his life and achievement for the country. He made the call when he delivered a sermon at a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of the late President Mills at the Legon Interdenominational Church. The service, which was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Heads of Departments, University of Ghana Alumni Association, University of Ghana Teachers Association (UTAG) and the clergy was to honour the late President Mills. Rev. Boamah also said late President Mills was a generous man who contributed his all for the spread of the gospel even as the Vice President of the Country.
He took his sermon from the book of Psalms and said “man is transient and life is short and only the Almighty God is eternal.” Rev. Boamah said inherent in the principle of mortality is also the law of accountability which the late President Mills was committed to. He said late President Mills was also devoted to the word of God and prayers which he observed fervently. T h e V i c e C h a n c e l l o r, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, in a tribute to late President Mills said hardworking and versatility effectively combined his work as a lecturer and sportsman. He said his love for sports and the high pedestal to which he lifted sports at the University of Ghana greatly contributed to transforming the Sports Unit into a full-fledged Directorate. He said as an academic, his expertise went beyond the classroom and is evidenced by the various examiner positions he held with finance related institutions in Ghana, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Bankers and the Ghana Tax Review Commission. Professor Aryeetey also said the University of Ghana owed a debt of gratitude to late President Mills for making the University proud as the President of Ghana and the immeasurable support he gave to the school.
He said the late President Mills will always be remembered by his students and colleagues.
Rawlings tribute to late President Mills Former President Jerry John Rawlings on Friday paid tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills as follows: “My earliest memory of John Evans Atta Mills was as a sportsman at Achimota School. “Though Prof, as I preferred to call him, served in several institutional capacities during my tenure as Head of State, close contact was renewed when he was nominated and subsequently confirmed as VicePresident when the NDC won the December 1996 Presidential elections. “Professor Mills was an outstanding Vice-President, gifted with an excellent retentive memory and served his role with full merit. “He had an excellent sense of punctuality, which can best be described as non-Ghanaian. “Having won my respect and admiration, there was no hesitation when I had to nominate him as Presidential candidate for the NDC. “Prof had often presided over cabinet, as Vice-President, so I sought the opinions of the ministers to confirm if they thought he was good enough Cont’d on page 30

to be President and the response was overwhelming. “Against strong opposition, some from within the party, I stood by the Prof and gave him full support after the electoral misfortunes of 2000 and 2004 because I was convinced he had the capacity to be an excellent President, having excelled as Vice-President. “Prof, you came into office with your dignity and integrity intact. “I do recall some of the night briefings you used to give me, especially after cabinet meetings and how I insisted you stand your ground when a few errant appointees attempted to test your integrity. “A lot of water has passed under the
bridge since the hard fought electoral victory of 2008. While many may perceive my criticism of the Prof as ill conceived, I was not going to look away while a man with such great potential was led astray from the ideals that we fought for; from the ideals that the NDC stood for. “We waged a stout political campaign in 2008 and those who really cared for the Prof deserved to speak the truth to help him succeed as President. “My final meeting with Prof before he passed away was on Thursday July 5 at the Castle. "During our meeting we expressed our mutual respect for each other as was always the case and news of his departure on July 24 came with cold pain. "Fare thee well Prof. Damirifa Due.”
