UTAWALA BORA September 2015

Issue # 9

Karibuni It has been a busy September month at MS TCDC. Some of the activities involved ActionAid training in Local Governance Budget Advocacy, the new intake of students for the BA in Governance and Development, and the finishing of the Diploma in Media and Land Governance. On their last night at MS TCDC, attendees of a UJOSS (Union of Journalist of South Sudanese) workshop gave a presentation and had a discussion with centre participants on the current political, economic, and media situation in South Sudan. An IOGT—NTO Movement partners meeting was held at Pan-Africa with 52 participants from many different organisations in Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi. The centre had a visit from the new Hon. Ambassador of Denmark for Tanzania. We also hosted an important 100 Resilient Cities conference for Arusha City, held by Dalberg - Global Development Advisors that included government officials and other important figures from Arusha. We look forward to an exciting month in October, which includes a visit from the General Secretary (Frans Mikael Jansen) and International Director (Jakob Kirekemann) of MS ActionAid Denmark for a joint

Towards Tanzania’s Election The 2015 General Election in Tanzania is different from any past general elections. The main difference is the incomparable citizen participation in politics both emotionally and physically. No other general election has seen multitudes of people turning up at election campaign rallies as has been seen this year. Whether this turn up will be reflected on the voting day, 25/10/2015 is yet to be known. Presidential campaigns particularly have become everybody’s talk in the country. Parliamentary and Ward Councilors campaigns are receiving less attention compared to previous elections. This might point to the fact that the constitution plac-

es much power on the President of the Republic of Tanzania in the general running of the national affairs. Presidential candidates have run out of words and promises to the people, each in an attempt to win as many votes as possible.Whether the promises are viable and can be fulfilled is yet to be known. Citizen’s expectation from whoever wins the presidency is beyond imagination. The best thing in this general election is that citizens, both young and old are actively engaged, and will therefore, fully own the outcome. LONG LIVE TANZANIA…! LONG LIVE AFRICA..! Tea break allowed staff, students, as well as visiting workshop and conference partic-

ipants to engage in an informal chat with the Ambassador on such topics as development, Denmark’s criteria for giving aid and the upcoming general election. Though there has been some concern on the elections, several ‘visitors’ to Tanzania commented on the peaceful nature of the pre-election period and the Tanzanian people in general. MS TCDC's principal, Suma Kaare, thanked the Ambassador for his time, and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with and support from the Danish government. The visit finished off with a walk around the premises before the Ambassador continued on to his flight at Kilimanjaro Airport.
